View Full Version : Can the TMNT brand survive a "bad" Turtles movie?

As we all know, bad movies can potentially damage a brand to the point where it bombs the franchise for a few years until it reboots. Common examples are:
- Batman and Robin damn near killed the entire Batman movie franchise for years. Its not only considered the worst comic book movie of all time (that's well known anyway), but it completely soured Batman, Robin, Mr. Freeze, and Bane especially in the eyes of the general public
- Superman IV bombed the Superman franchise in theaters for nearly 20 years. Even Superman Returns was poorly received, which kept the franchise out of theaters for another couple of years until Man of Steel.
- The Green Lantern movie bombed, completely killed the franchises chances of taking off in the mainstream
- Spiderman 3 ruined the original Spiderman trilogy, eventually leading to the films to be rebooted.
- X-men the Third stand almost ruined the X-men movie franchise entirely, but its now going through a second wind.
etc.
While the Turtles franchises has had some less than stellar movies before, they either came at already the waning days of the franchise (TMNT III), or nobody was even aware the movie existed outside of hardcore fans in the first place (TMNT 4 in 2007).
However thanks to Nick the TMNT franchise is probably at the most popular its ever been since around 1992, and this new movie is already well known to the masses thanks to the controversy of the following:
1. Rumors of alien Turtles
2. Michael Bay
3. Megan Fox
4. White Eric Sachs Shredder
5. The leaked script which was horrible
Do you think if this movie bombs with terrible reviews in theaters, that it could potentially damage the TMNT brand? What possible impact could it have on the rest of the franchise?

I think there'll be small damage but nothing too large. The Nick toon, IDW comics and toys will continue while the movie (if unsuccessful) will flounder and just be another Michael Bay flick.

Yes the brand will survive, heck. A bad movie can still reel in the big dough, case in point the live action Transformers movies.

The TMNT brand has survived many bad Turtles movies. They'll be alright.
Now, their credibility after this movie? Not so much, but 63 million can buy a lot of things... even that.

If Spider-Man 3 is considered a 'bad' movie that killed the brand according to you, then I think we'll be just fine in terms of Turtles....

I think it depends on what we are defining as "bad", and what degree of survival we are talking about.
If it's a box office success, but a critical failure, the mainstream would still regard the franchise as geared for children/pre-teens and it would be more difficult to convince the adult mainstream that the premise can be enjoyed at a more mature level (if we considering they are not comic book readers or don't have a nostalgic tie to the franchise from their childhood), and as Andrew NDB seems to suggest in terms of credibility. The possibilities of reaching "Turtlemania" success would be postponed at best.
If it's both a critical and a financial failure, it would be a big step back if Nickelodeon/Viacom was hoping for this movie to initiate a period of "Turtlemania" enthusiasm.
As for some using TMNT III, Turtle Tunes, Turtle Christmas, and The Next Mutation as examples of the franchise "surviving", clearly TMNT survived within the underground/hardcore fandom community, but I don't think those films/shows can be used as proper examples for surviving the mainstream because all of those were released after Turtlemania (the years after 1989-1992). They were released when the franchise was declining, and they were riding the final waves of momentum created by the OT and first two movies to extract any profitability left... even if it was at the expense of quality. If the 1990 movie was horrendous, it would be a more appropriate example because it and the 2014 movie are both released when the franchise was rising in popularity.

What fans think is bad and the general public think is bad is totally different though. We are on Transformers 4 and I couldn't even make it through the first one, but those movies are hugely popular. I think a "bad" turtles movie might be just what the people want. I know people who think the vehicle looks awesome for instance.
In conclusion, a bad movie might make big $ and that will mean plenty of more bad movies to come. Then they can ruin Casey Jones!

Sadly TMNT is too popular for a movie bombing to go unnoticed.
The 2007 movie got away with being a "Meh" movie because nobody seemed to know it existed outside of the Ninja Turtle fandom. It couldn't do any damage because the mainstream had no clue about it.

I can't think of a long-running comic franchise that hasn't had at least one truly awful movie connected to it. The Turtles already have several. We'll be fine.

Well it depends on the movie. If it's good then yeah it will add fuel to the ninja turtle hype.
If it's bad like we fear it will be...odds are those outside the fandom or just getting into the fandom would be turned off by it. But everyone else will just shrug their shoulders and say "That's not Ninja Turtles."
Spiderman 3 ruined the original Spiderman trilogy, eventually leading to the films to be rebooted.Critics disliking Spider-Man 3 had nothing to do with the films being rebooted. It was because Sam Rami couldn't meet the deadline for a fourth.

You can blame Sony for that, They wanted another Spider-Man movie as soon as possible, They have to continue making those movies in order to still have the rights.

TMNT isn't taken very seriously by mainstream media and the audience in general compared to the likes of Spider-Man and Batman, I'm afraid. So maybe it can survive a terrible movie? Who knows.

II and III. Arguably more.So now we're counting Secret of the Ooze as a bad movie? Yeah right...its more lighthearted but its not bad.
TMNT was not a bad movie either...just wasn't that grand of a theatrical release. Seems like it would of fit better as direct-to-video or a TV special.
Part 3 was the only bad movie. NM, Turtle Tunes and such don't count. They were not movies.

You're not alone.
Anyway, in regards to the question, yes. If this franchise can make it past stuff like TMNT 3, it can make it past another. Plus other franchises have made it past bad movies. (Transformers, Avatar, Dragon Ball, etc.)

Given the number of years between Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie 3 and TMNT the CGI movie. It would have been better if the CGI movie had been a reboot and not a supposed continuation of the original film Trilogy.
The one really bad thing about that it expected the people who came to see it to be familiar with the TMNT mythos. Anyone one else who went to see it in theaters because it was a CGI film wouldn't have any idea who these characters were or why they were mutant turtles who lived with a mutant rat.

It really confused me when I found out they were keeping it in the series canon. I get that they didn't want another Shredder film, so it was easier to put them in a universe where he was already gone, but it was a weird choice.

I don't think TMNT is taken seriously enough by the mainstream to be really hurt by a bad movie.
I just don't think beyond the fans and children, that people every really thought that any of the movies were anything beyond, a silly fun children's cartoon brought to the big screen.
You show them TMNT, TMNT Secret of the Ooze, TMNT III and they see products of similar quality.
I also think people...sometimes tend to blow the effect of some bad movies and its effect on franchises out of proportion...just sometimes.

Are you comparing the TMNT movies to, "real" movies? Compared to other comic book movies, none of the Turtle movies have much depth, but they're good for what they are.
But I realize my opinion is bias as a TMNT fan, but I still wouldn't compare them to the best DC or Marvel films.
A movie can rarely kill a franchise. Batman was well and alive after Batman and Robin, we got plenty of Batman stuff, the only thing the movie killed was future movies, and it was for the best, since we got the awesome BBegins instead of more wacky villains or more of Burton's take. Superman is more of a change in times and hard having him relate to the current generation, not so much that the fourth movie killed the franchise. X-Men was well and alive after X3, in fact the only reason the movie franchise even took a very small break was because X3 was an ending to the film franchise similar to The Dark Knight Rises. Green Lantern is a special case because he's never been a mainstream superhero that people really know, the movies job was supposed to get people into GL in a similar way that Iron Man, no one outside of fans knew who IM was and now he's one of Marvels biggest heroes alongside Spider-Man and Wolverine. So yeah the movie did kill any chances of GL becoming big but it didn't kill the franchise, he's doing what he was doing before the movie. Spider-Man 4 was going to happen but it had to do more with differences between the director and the studio, but SM3 didn't kill the franchise, though it did hurt the chances of continuing that continuity after the director left.
So the answer is no, it cannot kill the franchise at all. But the bigger question is, can it kill the TMNT movie franchise? And we all know that's a yes. TMNT III killed the chances of more movies, which is why IV was stuck in development hell, they needed something new which is why we got all the crazy ideas of the fourth turtle or extra mutations, they didn't want another bomb but the fad dying at the same time didn't help. The 2007 movie didn't go as unnoticed as people thought but people just weren't interested since it was CG and people saw it for "kid" only and kids didn't care for the turtles. Of course it actually did decently but not enough to get a sure sequel, in fact it only killed the chances of another CG movie but laird was still selling the idea of another movie and we probably would've gotten a new movie by now with actors had the franchise not been sold. Now if this movie is bad it'll kill any chance of movies for a few years, but it'll be revisited eventually and have no effect on current TMNT stuff.
Many of the examples in the OP are movies considered bad by the internet but not necessarily by the average casual fan and all the "bad" movies that made a lot of money continued the franchises like X-Men, spider-Man etc. Just look at Transformers, who doesn't hate and piss on the movie franchise and yet we're on the fourth movie going strong. TMNT can be a bad movie and make a lot of money and the movie franchise will continue.

Secret of the Ooze was more lighthearted like I said and had a more OT feel but that didnt mean it was bad. They just changed the tone.
My only complaint is the way Super Shredder died. Doesn't make sense and it was a missed opportunity for a more memorable ending.

Maybe its been a while since I've seen TMNT3 and I agree it wasn't great or on par with the other turtles movies but was it really that bad? Honestly?
Sure it had time traveling and made Casey Jones a glorified baby sitter, but I don't remember anything that would make me consider it to be a "bad" movie.
Anyway, back to topic. I think if it bombs the franchise will be as it was before but it will kill any chance of another movie for the next five years or so. Which sucks, however I don't know whether I want it to be a hit or not. If it is a hit but its a terrible representation of what the turtles really are then the next movies will be more of the same. If it fails that means we won't get another movie for a long, long, time. But when they finally do make one there is a chance it could be much closer to the source material. Hopefully I'm wrong.
I dunno does that make any sense?

People mostly rag on III for the costumes being inferior to the first two movies. Aside from that and a few lame jokes, the movie wasn't bad at all.

It is a bad movie. If you think it is anything other than a bad movie, it is because of nostalgic attachment.
Solid voice work on the characters, wonderful animatronic FX, decent musical score, acting that wasn't that bad at all (Ernie Reyes Jr. and company weren't That bad), no 'shaky cam' in fight scenes (or scenes in general, which hurts most action movies in today's age), capable fight choreography, some lines that make you laugh ("A little Too Raph"), and some actual (small, but appreciated) moments of the characters acting like an actual family (goofing with each other, etc).
And yes, of course that's just my opinion.
So yeah, I like the film. And no, it's not just for 'nostalgic attachment'.

Thank you both! Glad to know I'm not the only one. I actually liked it BETTER than SotO, for the time-travel aspect, the deeper story, (yes, it WAS, with much more to it than a simple "stop Shredder" plot) and the acting being generally better. I also liked the tone better. It struck more of a balance between the seriousness of the first and the goofiness of #2. Raph's moments of bonding with Yoshi, Mikey's crush on Mitsu- it was all subtle but effective. Much more so than Shredder trying to get revenge by making his own mutants. And that "Super Shredder" ending- ugh.... I almost lost all suspension of disbelief there. Keno and Prof. Perry were the best things about #2, IMHO.

I don't think it's even debatable that TMNT III is a stronger film than TMNT II.
Ramboraph4life aka Matt
01-18-2014, 04:39 PM
I do think TMNT II is much stronger than part 3, so I'd disagree with that. But to each their own.
Part II had a consistent tone, while part 3's tone fell hard on its' face. The 'seriousness' that part 3 tried to have just failed miserably, and the goofiness in part 3 was both annoying and unfunny (at least, to me, there were some actual fun moments in part 2).
The 'Mikey having a crush on Mitsu' was so pointless, tiny, and inconsequential that it might as well not have been in the flick.
The 'Raph dealing with Yoshi' seemed more like a plot point so that the kid could show Raph the scepter. And it didn't make a lick of sense considering it was Mikey who saved him from the fire, and Leo who gave him mouth to mouth. And yet the kid becomes friends with Raph?
Part 3 had the weakest villains (aside from the 2007 film), lamest jokes, worst costumes, complete waste of Casey Jones (even the Keno character had more to do with the plot in part 2, than Casey in part 3), Splinter looks like he was dunked in a vat of grease at KFC, and the Turtles looked like they have not only buck teeth but moles all over their bodies (they looked ready to belong to a Leper Colony).
And the voice work of Splinter, Raph, and Donnie in part 3 were pretty bad (yes, I do think Corey Feldman is a bad voice for Donatello and just does not fit the character at all...and I think he actually did the voice of Slash very well on the 2k12 cartoon series, so I give him credit for that).
Voice work was much better in part 2. And there were fun, little 'family moments' in part 2 that were nowhere to be found in part 3.
But that's just a couple things, and it's just my own opinion on the flick. Didn't mean to put this thread off track. Just wanted to defend part 2, at least a little bit. But I know I'm in the minority on that.

I don't think it's even debatable that TMNT III is a stronger film than TMNT II.
Are you saying II was better? In what way? It had a much more simple plot consisting mainly of Shredder wanting revenge, and not much else outside of Don questioning their origins. It went too far into the "goofy" range at times, and what seriousness there might have been got lost as a result.

I'll agree about the costumes, and Casey could have had more of a role (though it was never about him so much as his "possible ancestor" Whit) but I disagree with most of the rest. The score was so much better, and fit the overall theme and tone of the movie. (Yoshi's Theme in particular is beautiful). And say what you will about Feldman as Don, to me he IS the voice of the movie Donnie, and always will be. There is nothing wrong with Donnie having a deeper and rougher voice, it actually makes him stand out better from his brothers. His voice was just fine, especially when he's muttering to himself while studying the scepter at the beginning, or later when he's trying to figure out how to build a replacement. Feldman's voice made it sound more like someone who spends a lot of time talking to himself and probably doesn't sleep much due to always working on projects. He's got the "sleepless workaholic rasp" that I'd expect Donnie to have. And it works well with the easy-going delivery he gives. Everyone else's voices were the same, so I don't understand why there would be any problems there.
As for the villains, I liked them. They were more a threat due to their conflict with the villagers, rather than threatening the Turtles directly. Both were after the scepter, which made them a threat to the Turtles getting home, as well. It wasn't "we want to kill them" kind of threat, it was a "if they get it back first, we're stuck here for good" threat- which almost becomes a moot point later on when two of them decide they don't want to leave after all! But that still left the rebellion to deal with, and they did understand that the scepter would have to be found and Kenshen returned in order to end the war. The villains weren't even really "bad" except for Walker, they just had opposing goals. Norinaga was trying to put down a rebellion, and Walker was simply supplying the weapons- and apparently had some motives of his own for keeping it going.
Mikey's crush was subtle, but it was actually pretty important, both in terms of Mitsu's worry for Kenshen, and in his wanting to stay behind at the end. He's the turtle who most wants to be accepted and belong somewhere, and the fact that the villagers were willing to welcome them made him question why they were going back at all. His budding interest in her underscored the larger issue of wanting to be able to live in the open- and it was just the most obvious sign of his deeper need. The argument at the end over whether to return never would have happened without him and Raph wanting to remain there with Mitsu and Yoshi.
Speaking of Yoshi, although Mikey and Leo saved him, they really had very little to do with him afterward. It was Raph who was the first one to actually TALK to him. Yoshi was Raph's talk with Splinter from the first movie coming full circle. He saw himself in the boy, and that clearly made an impression on him. And being the protective sort he is, he wanted to make sure Yoshi got to enjoy being a kid as long as possible. He was showing his softer side there, and that was one of the major reasons for the decision later about possibly staying in the past.
Also, there WERE plenty of "family" moments, like when they are talking about splitting up and April reminds them that they are brothers, or when they are by the stream and Raph goes into his little commentary about nature and how much cleaner the water is, etc. or at the beginning when they are trying to cheer him up just before April arrives with the scepter.

Cyber, I have to you credit you do make some really good points. The only way this movie hurts the franchise if its as bad as "Avatar the Last Airbender" That pretty much all, but killed the franchise.....
I wish they would just do a movie trilogy based on the original Mirage continuity.
Something like Movie 1 would be like issue 1 or 1 and 2.
Movie 2 would be Leonardo Micro and return of the shredder issues maybe have it end with the turtles getting to North Hampton.
Movie 3 would be of course Return to NY.
Then if you all that would go over well the next obvious movie would be about City at War of course.
But, I feel this would definitely make the turtles a mainstream success.
Maybe aim for a pg-13 rating..

People are too quick to bash. Hold onto one thing and keep repeating it. What ugh said I'd spot on. I still support the second movie as well though.:tgrin:

Kinda like you with regards to the Nick series.
Everyone, I present to you the king of hypocrites. Crown him accordingly.

I have tons of reasons to hate the "show". Not just one and they're valid. You're just butt hurt.

Just like others have tons of reasons to hate TMNT III. Doesn't make them right or wrong. It just means they don't like the movie.
It's no different than your opinion of the Nick show. You not liking the show doesn't make it a bad show. It just means you don't like it. Opinions don't equal facts. Your 'valid' reasons are only your opinions.

Are you saying II was better? In what way? It had a much more simple plot consisting mainly of Shredder wanting revenge, and not much else outside of Don questioning their origins. It went too far into the "goofy" range at times, and what seriousness there might have been got lost as a result. .
No, I'm saying III was better. Re-read my post.
II was nonsense. Though I loved it as a 10 year old.

II was silly but I still felt like it had some cool moments, such as the junkyard scene where Raph...thought he saw a ghost. The costumes were well done. It also seemed like the family dysfunction/drama was still sort of an element.
When I think back to III I'm not really sure what to think of it. It's an awkward and slightly pointless memory that I have of the third film. What did it have going that II didn't?

The Turtles actually use their weapons.
Time travel, including a use of the Time Scepter from the comics.
The implication, if you wanna read into it a little, that Norinaga is Shredder's ancestor and that Mitsu is Yoshi's.
A better general story.

I think everyone just needs to chill out. Its like the star trek reboot and the DC renumbering, even if this version of the turtles is terrible we still have the original iterations and the new cartoon and IDW comics to fall back on as before. They've been around this long they're not going anywhere.

Does anyone know if there is a way to add this to my DVD? It's a pain keeping my VCR around just for one movie..

I actually enjoy the second and third movies equally. They're both a massive step down from the first movie, but I can enjoy the highlights of both movie quite a bit.

I see. It wasn't exactly clear what you meant before. I couldn't tell if you were joking or not. It's cool, though.

Loved that commercial. When I saw that commercial I knew The movie was about to start.
But looking back at it now that I am older it is really a good commercial. Better than a good amount of today stupid commercials they have on tv.

The fanbase will always be there. Whatever else can be said about any of us, we all love us some TMNT. And people who love TMNT will always eventually end up in a position to create new movies, cartoons, toys and video games.
As history has shown, though, a poor movie can set the film franchise back about 15 years. That wouldn't shock me. But eventually someone will try again, if for no other reason than the franchise was, at one time, a big money-maker.
And II and III had some enjoyable qualities, but on a technical level, they're poorly-made films. It doesn't mean they're not enjoyable, in and of themselves, but they are "bad" movies. Script, dialog, costumes, pacing, editing, special effects, overall execution... they are supremely flawed all around.

Whats really amazing to me it how many people are assuming that this movie is going to bomb and hurt the franchise, but we basically have seen nothing. I will hopefully laugh my ass off in a few months when the same people bashing right now end up loving
well heres hoping :D

I dunna Redeemer, we know quite a little bit, and most of it isn't good. As I've said before, and to be fair it's borrowed, you can't make a delicious omelet if it's made with several rotten eggs.
