View Full Version : Your opinion on Megan Fox being cast as April?

So as the title says how do you all feel about Megan being April?
From what I've seen on other Websites it has caused a lot of controversy.
At this point I honestly have no real opinion on her yet. Though I do have to question, WHY exactly she got picked for the role....?
I have nothing against her but she just doesn't really scream "April O' Neil" to me for some reason.....
Is it just me?

She got picked because of Michael Bay tbh.
I wish all the best to her. :)

Totally miscast, she looks nothing like how April should.
Also I just don't think Megan Fox is that attractive anymore, she's not really the sex symbol she was a couple years ago.

well it's a good thing April isn't known as a sex symbol :)

As in previous thread, I'm not glad that Megan Fox is cast as April. I find her acting abilities extremely lacking in what I've seen her in, but I could be pleasantly surprised.
Doesn't really bother me.

I said this:
And the internet shouted a collective, "CALLED IT!"
Seriously, how many people half joked that having Michael Bay even attached to a Turtles movie would mean Megan "Don't mind me, I'm just hear to run in slo-mo and lean sexily over motorcycles" Fox was a shoe-in to play April.
I'm not sure if I should go ahead and see this opening day to see how much of a train wreck it'll be, or say, "Screw it, mine would just be one more ticket to help green light a sequel to this garbage!"

Honestly, at first it Pissed me off, but now after thinking about it, I can't say I'm surprised. It's Michael Bay After all.
Totally miscast, she looks nothing like how April should.May I ask how "should" April look? Seeing how there have been so many different incarnations of her.

She can play the "whore" like no other but I don't think she has that type of acting needed to play April or play a different range of character I believe. Plus all the other live action Aprils ACTUALLY LOOKED LIKE APRIL. She's just her usual self. The one good thin is will arenett looks almost exactly like Vernon. Although I don't like his new brave persona I can deal with it.

I guess it depends what the role calls for her doing. If her role is more-or-less limited to retreading the character of Fred Wolf April; known mostly for being self-important, getting captured, and having big boobs, she should be fine. Yet that's not what I hope April is limited to; I'd like her at least to have the emotional depth of the first movie's April, and prefer to have her learn to fight at least a bit--and I'm not convinced Fox can pull it off.
So it's to be or not to be; whether tis worse to play a lame role perfectly or a good role badly.

Your use of "scare quotes" does not change the fact that you cannot provide proof that Megan Fox has played a sex worker, and as such has never been a whore/prostitute. Your reliance on that word leads me to believe you are partaking in the act of slut shaming, and that is offensive. Please stop.

Yes Jennifer's body is what I was referring to, I'm not 'slut bashing' I have just yet to see her range as an actress. From the beginning of Jennifer's body she would talk about all the guys she slept with and she seduced every guy the hole movie, given it was to kill them it's still that role. Even in transformers she was still that sex symbol, everyone wanted to get with. The bad chick, yeah she was on the good side but she was the perverbial "bad chick". She played an escort in this is 40 which IS a prostitute. I haven't seen any work of hers where she isn't a slut or a whore. I'm not bashing anything. We'll see in this movie if she can actually act.

Wait...I have to be constructive?
I'm not the one dismissing her performances as "sluts and whores".
She "acted good" in "Jennifer's Body" where she played two very distinct characters. One of which was a demon. I maintain that her performance was fantastic in this movie through a combination of her "acting good" and working with a director that viewed her character as three dimensional, and not as T&A. Not to mention the script was clever.
Neither of those things could be said about Bayformers.
That right there? Is constructive.
You, dismissing her acting because you're focused on how bad it is that a female character likes sex, is not.

Her two "distinct roles" were slutty demon and slutty human. I'm not sexist, I don't care what role a girl plays or what role a guy plays. She was good in that movie but its a product of her typecast role as the girl everyone gets with, and as a sex symbol. I asked you to name some work of hers where she wasn't in that type of role and still acted well, you could not. At least not off the top of Your head. My opinion on Fox, as I mentioned before in some other thread discussing the movie and/or her...
There are better actresses out there and nothing about her in particular strikes me as the April O'Neil type.
That being said, since this movie is within Bay's stable of films, I have always felt she'll be the useless maiden as she maintained in the Transformers movies (before she got replaced by a surprisingly weaker actress). She got in trouble a lot in the original cartoon, and looking at the cast list for this Summer 2014 film already would indicate that this is the April we will get despite Bay not being the director of this film. She'll probably be the one that will "stir the pot" and get in trouble doing so.
I have yet to see a Bay film, directed or produced, where the female is strong AND good looking.

Well to be fair, her job as an escort is only a passing line that explains why she has all the nice things she has despite working in retail, and not because she was stealing from the boutique. She's actually pretty charming in the movie.
My issue with her casting is that she's almost always cast as characters that exist to be eye candym I don't want a TMNT film where April's whole purpose is to be eye candy for the viewer.

That your reliance on a sexist slur to describe the performance of a female actor is problematic? No no, I assure you I can handle that.
I'm disappointed by it, certainly, but I can handle it.
It's not as if it's the first time I've seen a fanboy dismiss, and debase a female character this way. Chances are good it won't be the last.
Our media has a problem with female characters and their sexual agency. That Fox is considered "merely a sex symbol" and nothing else says little about Fox, and more about the industry. As a whole. Responses like Cyber's are rampant. "Past her prime" because she's not deemed "young and attractive enough," without any mention of her ability to act. Hollywood sees no problem casting older and older leading men, but once a woman passes a certain age the roles are few and far between. And that's for the women who are lucky enough to be within the acceptable standards for attractive appearance.
Again, while I'm cool with seeing her play April, I'm disappointed that she's aligning herself with Bay, who seems to deal in little else than sexist and racist stereotypes.
If I had any reassurance that the script would be good, and the director would be competent, I'd feel better about it. I just don't trust Platinum Dunes to capable of creating a three dimensional female character, and it's about time April was treated right.

I didn't call her herself slutty nor her performance, I called her role that. Because that's what it is! That's the role she always plays! You still haven't given me a role where she isn't a sex symbol and acted well. And it sounds to me you have a problem with the industry and not the 'fanboys' which I'm not. Yes I'm a fan, yes I'm an adult male, but fan boy? Really? I don't feed into your sexist agenda or hierarchy that anyone who has a negative opinion about a female actress or not is automatically sexiest. We have amendments in the states, equal rights, you fought for that remember? And in most court systems and many things they actually favor women. I merley stated that her range as an actress is yet to be shown. I hope she is a great April and blows me away I really do but up to this point she is a one trick pony. And there are tons of old actresses, Susan serandon is still acting and she's ugly as sin. No offense double S. The mother from everybody loves Raymond, Bette Middler, Sarah Jessica Parker, the woman from boys don't cry, Hilary swank I believe, there's lots.

Jennifer's Body was terrible in every aspect, but it's not enough for me to judge Megan Fox as an actress. I think she has the unfortunate luck of ending up in terrible movies, and yes, that goes for the Transformers movies as well. From what I've seen, she doesn't look bad as April. How old was Judith Hoag or Paige Turco when they were shooting in the movies?

April O has looked so different over the years. There is some comic art where April looks like a black woman or whatever that means.
Fox has a teeny thing about her. Judith Hoag was pretty young when she played the character but still
Maybe its because of the kinds of roles she had in the past? I think Megan Fox is actually older playing this April than Judith Hoag was when she played April.
The Nick Cartoon has April as a teen. I'm glad that she's an adult in the movie.

Ah. In Jennifer's body she actually hadn't ever had sex with anyone before she became a "monster". She was a virgin that's why she was able to be sacrificed and revived as a succubus.

I've only seen her in Jennifer's body and in Transformers 1 and 2. Granted those movies aren't fantastic and I wasn't a huge fan of anyone in those movies it's hard for me to really judge.

I've only seen her in Jennifer's body and in Transformers 1 and 2. Granted those movies aren't fantastic and I wasn't a huge fan of anyone in those movies it's hard for me to really judge.
Hell I hated Shia LeBouf as an actor until I saw Lawless. It just depends on the movie I suppose.
He's such a raw natural actor. Has terrific range, really takes pride and works hard for what he does. He dropped acid just to get the character right in Charlie countrymen!!

That's my opinion and I'm stickin by it. Most of the BS in Transformers 2 was made up for by having her run around in those tight white pants. Besides, not like we need an oscar winner to play someone as generic as April. I'm sure she'll do fine in the actual acting department.

TBH, after having no consistent April character in recent TMNT adaptations, I don't really have a strong concept of April like I do the turtles. They've changed her personality, occupation, and age so much that I don't mind Megan Fox.This.
April's been done so many different ways, we don't even know what this April is going to be like. So, how can we say Fox is wrong for the job. Heck, when asked what actress should play April, fans will name each and every actress who's ever been captured on film with red hair. That, alone, shows that darned near anyone could play the role.
While they could've found someone better than Megan Fox, I don't think she's that bad. We could've definitely done worse.

A legacy of amazing films and flawless acting yes. He actually became every role he was placed in. He puts so much time and effort into his trade and it shows. You have to respect what he does. He came up from Disney where he had a few quality films also he was just that wacky kid of even Stevens and now he's in block buster films and you can see he has terrific range. It's not like a Ryan Reynolds where he is only good in comedy but still tries to do serious stuff.

 I somehow missed it until now. Guess I confused it with the 80 other Megan Fox threads.
Here's the thing, guys... there's a reason Fox as April was the first announcement they made about the movie. Furthermore, there's good reason why people should be happy. Ready? Here it is:
Without Megan Fox, they probably were not going to make the movie. To the studio, all that matters is having a "Star" to draw even the most casual fans into the theater. Everything else is secondary. The VERY first thing they do, before they even commission a script, in most cases, is look for a name and a face to put on the poster, someone everyone around the world knows and will pay money to see. Did you know that at one point in 1975, Mohammed Ali was seriously being considered to play Superman? No, he wasn't the studio's first choice, but they had nothing else yet! No Brando, no Hackman, Reeve wasn't even a possibility... the WB execs simply would NOT put up any money for the movie unless they had A STAR. And if you think nobody noticed Cassius Clay doesn't look much like Superman, believe me, that wasn't a concern. Their concern was, "the whole world knows who this guy is, and if he's in our movie, it will make money." Add Arnold, Stallone, Redford and even Christopher Walken as guys WB wanted to see play Superman. We only got Chris Reeve because they got Marlon Brando to play Jor-El, so the studio calmed the f*ck down and let Richard Donner pick who he wanted to play Superman.
It's a business. In this case, no Megan Fox = No TMNT Movie. Period. And whether that's good or bad in this specific case is irrelevant. Another studio and another director may very well have cast Megan Fox as April for the exact $ame rea$on$. Or we'd get Will Ferrell as Vernon, or Ashton Kutcher as Michelangelo, or something else like that. It's Hollywood. You aren't going to get what you want.
Fox is the biggest female star in the world and that's all that matters. SOMEone you hate would have been the first announced cast member, regardless, because casting the star comes first. And mark my words, there will be a lot more wrong with this movie than her. I pretty much expect her to be a highlight of the movie, if for no other reason than her looks. Save the posturing, guys, most (all) of us would crawl over broken glass to even rub against a girl like that. Even if that's her only appeal, it's enough to sell tickets.
I'm no apologist. I think she kind of sucks. But she's the entire reason they're making a movie at all, and there's no proof another studio/director would have cast anyone different. So get over it, already. Sam Raimi or someone could be directing it, and you'd still get Megan Fox. Stop expecting a corporation that makes every decision based on dollars and cents to care if you like this actress over that one. Butts in seats. It ain't her fault.

Not as big a draw. Simple as that. They cast a STAR first. She's the biggest female Star in Hollywood and the whole world knows her face... among other body parts.

Globally? I doubt it.
Don't forget, it's about a name and a face on a poster that the whole world recognizes and will pay to see perform. That's what they choose based on, first and foremost. Transformers is a HUGE global entity at this point, those first two movies were a juggernaut.
I'm not saying I like her. I'm saying, to an objective person, she was an entirely logical choice.

From a business standpoint, absolutely. As far as creative choices are concerned, it's a miss. But that's my personal opinion, of course. Just the same, this is a different vision, maybe April isn't going to be having the same sort of emotional connection with the characters as say Judith Hoag, which would require less acting chops.
Leo656
01-27-2014, 12:25 AM
Hollywood and "creative" don't even belong in the same sentence.
Not that good actors don't exist, or can't be a studio's first choice for a movie role, but in the case of a movie like this their main priority is locking in a star, who may or may not be a good actor, but is recognizable enough for the studio to feel confident they'll make their investment back. Once that's in place, they have more leeway to cast people in other roles who are less well known, more talented actors, etc.
Sure, Fox isn't at her peak right now, but as far as the studio is concerned, neither is the franchise. Their logic is simply, "Fox = $$$". I mean, I'm kind of sure just about all her movies made more money than any of the TMNT movies (feel free to correct me, though) and that is and will always be their only concern.
It's bizness.
Coola Yagami
01-27-2014, 12:41 AM
I guess that explains why so many movies would rather have some big star ruin the role rather than some unknown that actually looks and can play the part. I assume Hugh Hackman got his big break as Wolverine since they have already signed Halle Berry and Patrick Stewart into the movie back in the day.
Leo656

Back in the mid-90s they apparently really, really wanted Glenn Danzig for Wolverine but he wanted nothing to do with it.
That's one of those persistent rumors, anyway; like how they wanted DiCaprio for Spider-Man during the same era.
Danzig would've been interesting. He's at least the proper height, and far more jacked than Jackman, size-wise at least.

It's the fact that Megan doesn't move a muscle on her face when she does it. You need more then to roll your eyes to faint, also it's unrealistic, when you see a giant monster in front of you your first reaction wouldn't be to lie down and get eaten, you would run like the wind...

Well, Vernon had some fainting moments, or near fainting moments. And he was pretty weak/effeminate all played for laughs.
Women fainting stems from the Victorian ages when women would wear tight laced corsets, literally suffering for beauty as it would hamper their air income and blood flow to the brain. Later it was deemed feminine to faint.
Hence why women faint in movies, and if a man faints it's funny cause that's what women do. The humor lies in that it's uncharacteristic of a man to faint when facing danger/stress, especially if the guy is a buff action dude.
Of course fainting or syncope can be caused by any things, but seeing something and then faint is pretty far out there. It's all about presentation.
And having fainted a couple of times when being sick, it's no laughing matter when you wake up on the floor, not knowing what happens and your full of blood cause you didn't soften the fall.

I have truly the worst response to something when it scares the hell out of me. I freeze! I FREAKING FREEZE! I don't scream or yelp or run, I just stand perfectly still, and I have noticed I stop breathing. Not too sure why. The one time I was truly terrified, that response helped me (I was wading in the water when I noticed everyone running towards the beach, and that's why I saw the sharks. I could not move a muscle) thankfully, they ignored me and kept on going.
So, if I was to be face to face with a large mutated animal, I'd probably do the same thing, just freeze.

That is trippy. The first and only time I've fainted while not being actually sick, it was really late night, almost starting to become morning. I couldn't sleep so I was watching videos from YouTube to get sleepier.
After watching a series of videos, I felt I was tired enough to try to sleep. Suddenly I'm no longer in my chain but on my floor with parts of the armrest from the chair under me, and for a brief moment when I realized I was on the floor I couldn't move properly for a moment.
I think, when it comes to movies, at least these days, we should have it a bit more elaborated then the old Victorian faint, unless they actually are wearing a corset of yore, like Elizabeth in the first Pirate of the Caribbean movie.
Like Nick Casey, he have some serious issues with rats. A friend of mine suffers from a severe cause of arachnophobia, it is so bad that he freezes up seeing spiders in video games. He knows the giant spiders in (every) fantasy games are fake, but just seeing a spider he needs a moment to re-collect himself. So it wouldn't be far off that someone with a severe case of musophopia would get dizzy and could faint.

Which could mean Megan is just having a fun time, and we might get a closer performance to Jennifer's Body then TF, TF2 and Jonah Hex.

Not at all who I would pick.
100% understand why she was picked.
Surprisingly, I think she'll be among the high points of the film. Not gonna lie, not even gonna front, she's not the hottest chick ever, but the stuff I'd do to that girl's body if given the chance would get a dude arrested... in Mexico. And that's the main reason she's there, because no matter what anyone here says, MOST adult straight males would Tap Dat Azz. Period. April O'Neil isn't exactly Lady MacBeth. Any breathing female could play the part. Sorry.
So, there's two ways it could go. 1. Fox turns in a better-than-expected performance, and wins over the fans. 2. Even if she sucks, and even if the entire movie is a popcorn fart, we STILL get to see her in those yoga pants, providing viewers at least SOME comfort for the remainder of the movie.
I'm not at all mad about the yoga pants. I'll gladly take as much April Cheesecake as any version wants to serve. But, in all seriousness, I think she's gonna surprise some people in a good way. I wasn't happy they picked her, but a lot of what I've seen and heard since then has been way more offensive than her.
Not even blaming her for that goofy fainting face. I can completely hear the director, take after take, yelling "BIGGER! MORE GOOFY! We're making a CARTOON!" People give certain actors so much heat for this or that performance or take, when in reality, what you see on screen is only the director's favorite take. I bet she did a dozen takes that weren't half as dumb, and they chose that one on purpose BECAUSE it was so bad.
I'unno, I'm not rooting for her but I do think people went overboard on the hate for her a long time ago. It's not like she's Kristen Stewart, or Kreuk, or anyone awful like that.

Well it's not like we needed Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry or Charlize Theron to play April. If anything, a more accomplished actress would not have suited the role. April needed to be someone with some credibility, not a nobody, and that's why I think Megan is the more perfect choice here.
Leo656

Yeah, they needed a "Name" to even get the financing for the film, that's how it works. They skated by with the old TMNT movies because the first one was an indie and became a surprise hit. Things are way too corporate nowadays to make a comic or cartoon-based movie without a name. Studios won't even put up the money until you have that, and she's the It Girl right now. It was perfectly logical, no matter how badly people gnash their teeth.
Leaving acting credentials out of it, and focusing 100% on what exactly is required to green-light a movie like this one, I can't think of anyone else they could or would have picked. Almost every alternative name anyone's thrown out has been "Who is she and why is she going sell a billion dollars' worth of tickets?"
MAYBE you get the chick from Hunger Games, and even then, she looks kinda too young even though she's not. Other than that, I'unno.
i dont approve of it. there were probably hundreds of better choices for the role of april. basically our only exposure to megan fox was through 2 transformers movies, and the wretched but happily forgettable jennifer's body. i dont think her acting skills are the greatest. but her name does have promotional value, and her looks (which ive seen better) will bring in big $$$, and hey, in the end thats all that matters right?
i really dont see her as april tho...

I'm going to wait and see how it turns out before raging all over the place like some are. I would have liked an unknown but I'm more than wiling to give her a chance. I remember the rage when Hugh jackman was cast as wolverine.....turned out OK. Give her a chance

I like Fox, I don't think that she is as bad as people make her out to be in the acting department. To be honest, I would be perfectly okay with her giving a passable performance. I like how she fainted in the trailer.
I would have chosen Ariana Grande. She is such a cutie.:trazz::trazz:Megan has too much of a plastic face for the role.

Personally I'm ok with Megan Fox being cast in the role, and don't everyone say it was Michael Bay who picked her, he's just the producer, he's not the director of this, Sure the director on it isn't the best, but I like his movies more then most of Bay's.
Plus the women in his aren't sex symbols like in Bay's. So judging by the fact that April in this is fully dressed she won't be either. lol
Like Plastron said, Megan Fox can act good when given something good to work in, and like I said, while this director isn't the best, he's much better at full female characters then Bay. I mean, Wrath of the Titans Andromeda was much better then Clash of the Titans Andromeda.

I'm willing to give Ms. Fox a chance (definitely not hating on the yoga pants)...I hate to digress..slightly, but I had no idea Judith Hoag was only 21 when they filmed the first Turtles movie.:tlol:

Well the makeup and the hair didn't really do her justice. Always thought she was very pretty. I coulda sworn she was at least 24. But she is still a avery stunning woman at 45.

Perfect choice TBH. Shame she doesn't look naturally pretty as she did in the first 2x Transformer flicks. She's had way too much plastic surgery. But even then, still hot. She's not even that bad of an actress. April O'Neil doesn't require a lot of chops, anyhow. The film's protagonists are giant mutated ninja turtles.

She gets hate because she's associated w/ Bay, and all the insecure people who rag on his flicks for no quality reasons. It's the popular thing to do. But I can actually formulate my own opinions, thankfully. Her absence, likability, and even acting abilities were sorely missed in TF Dark of the Moon.

I didnt think I would miss her, but her replacement was so one-dimensional. At least Megan Fox's character has history with Sam, given some depth to their relationship...
...back to turtles.
So far all we've seen are reaction shots, but considering that she will be the main human protagonist, I'm sure she'll have her chance to shine.

Strange, since she was kinda okay in Jennifer's and horrendous in Jonah Hex, both not Bay movies as far as I know
But, if she have improved since that, she might do fine. Time will tell.

I mentioned my reaction elsewhere, can't remember, but I'm happy to hear that Liebsman isn't going the easy route and just making her eye candy, but is instead giving her a purpose akin to a strong character.

I really really hope, that that scene is for us the audience seeing that April is sick of getting "girl's" jobs at the news station, maybe she will be complaining about the yoga trampoline gig, but Woopie-Thompson says no and won't give April a proper news reporter job. And that's why she starts doing a investigation report on her own or something.

not just eye candy...by the looks of the set photos, she is being used for fluff pieces (working out in public), and she vents her frustration to Vernon, and ultimately to Bern(adette). She's told to prove herself, and hence starts her quest to find something worth investigating....
...or something to that effect.

But it IS far off from what she was doing in the FIRST movie.
A respected journalist/reporter, covering a huge silent crime wave and stepping on even the chief of police's toes to do it.
I don't want to see the cliched to all hell "I want to be a respected journalist waaah!" crap.
All they had to do was write her as one from the beginning.
But nah, can't pass up a chance to have Megan Fox in yoga pants jumping up and down on a trampoline. Gotta bring in those 13 year old boys and 20 something year old guys with the same mindset as 13 year old boys.
Give me a f*cking break.

Having April start out as a reporter for crap just to give us the tired and boring and cliched as hell "But I want to be a respected journalist!" storyline that we all know how it's going to end up before we even see the thing sucks.
Literally all they had to do was write her as already BEING a respected journalist. And then take the story from there. But now we have to waste time on the subplot of Megan Fox not being taken seriously as a journalist because. Just because.
It's hackneyed, sh*t writing.
