My favorite is Mirage, he is the better character. Although with his short stay in the comics I do also enjoy IDW and Nickelodeon.
Least would be Ch'rell and his cyber counterpart, just too one dimensional and despite his background and seemingly competent action, he is still very useless against the turtles.

TMNT 2 Shredder (NES Video Game)

This one will forever be my favorite Shredder. He looks so badass and lethal, and was SO HARD to beat when I was very young. He kidnapped April, smashed through an office window and plummeted down Manhattan street, gloated in front of the turtles and has a kick-ass theme music. A good villain is always intimidating and tough, so he gets a lot of respect from me early on. :D
OT Shredder
http://i.imgur.com/0P75jyU.png
Second one will be OT Shredder due to the physical resemblance to the video game Shredder. And his voice is great - evil, sarcastic and humorous at times. I love his origin story with Hamato Yoshi, how he framed Yoshi for a attempted murder crime resulting Yoshi's banishment from the clan. I grew with OT so yeah, it resonates well with my childhood.

1987 cartoon version. No contest! The most layered and underrated version there will ever be. I loved everything about him from the voice to the personality to his relationship with fellow villains to his rivalry with Splinter and the TMNT. I hope we will get a proper intreptation of him in the upcoming Nick episode in a cameo if he shows up.

Absolutely! This is the one I grew up with, and as incompetent as he could be at times, his voice, humor, bickering with Krang, his cruel treatment of his minions, everything about him was great. I always wanted to know what made him so evil, when it was clear that the Foot was honorable and noble before he took over. I also wondered why he hated Yoshi so much in the OT. I wish we'd gotten to see more of their background together in that series. But it was Avery's portrayal of him that made him so great to me.
Second would be the movie version, possibly tied with Ch'rell from 2K3. I liked both equally, though the movie will always have a special place in my heart as my FIRST intro to the TMNT.

It's amazing how those voice actors do it. They just look at the picture and think up the voice themselves

I didn't grow up with the comics.
So... my fav Shredders in the 30 years of my life would be (in no order):
The OT Shredder
The 1st Movie Shredder
And whichever version kidnapped baby Miwa, raised her as Karai and trained her to kill Splinter and the Turtles. I never read this character but it's SO twisted!
Maybe I like the concept more than which Shredder it was.

OT Shredder and 1st Movie Shredder.
With OT Shredder, as others above had said before he was layered with his feud with Splinter, having a brother as a police officer, the humor in arguing with Krang, Bebop, and Rocksteady, and an icy alliance with Krang that developed into a much more willing collaborative one.
Even though the action scenes had to be water-downed and comedy had to be interjected to avoid the heat already from overprotective parents, he still was threatening and competent. Yes, there were food fights and slips on banana peels but when it came to whatever was being used as a weapon he used it effectively, and the slips/falls were more circumstantial rather than some innate clumsiness as compared to Rocksteady and Bebop.
By season 7 and 8, cartoons in general were becoming darker, and we saw him transition back into the ominous super villain from the first season.
With 1st movie Shredder, the acting and writing was able to effectively make Shredder and his brutality believable, especially with the scene when he taunts the Turtles in saying he killed the "old rat" and not even calling Splinter by his name in that scene.

I've answered this before, though since it was before Nick/IDW had gotten far along, I'll have to say the current Nickelodeon Shredder. He appears enough to be a threat and doesn't clown around over the top at times like OT Shredder does, and we've seen a couple good battles with him so far. Plus Kevin Michael Richardson is a great voice actor that provides a unique take on the character. OT Shredder comes in second place due to the sillyness, but of course has the great insults and occassionally can be competent such as in Ninja Sword of Nowhere and in the Eye of Sarnath Arc. 4kids is good and comes in third on my preferences, but I felt 4kids tried a bit too hard with Shredder, and it showed with the multiple mantles and of course Ch'rell, but it was still interesting to watch that can still haunt me on a rewatch. Mirage Shredder is next since each appearance of him really feels special, though he's a bit too weak to be a good superthreat. IDW I don't care about since he hasn't contributed too much at this point, plus the idea of going against Krang will make his impact against the Turtles delayed until they can get themselves together; at least Nickelodeon seems destined for a Kraang/Shredder alliance like in the OT. TNM of course is the weakest, being a pet joke early on.

What's weird is that my favorite Shredder is probably the 4Kids Utrom Shredder, and I'm not even a fan of him being an utrom. He was just that great of a Shredder/Oroku Saki that it trumps the fact that he's an utrom.

Well, just for the record, I don't think the Utrom factor needed to be transcended. Ch'rell was just another part of the 4Kids series' merging of separate parts of the Mirage universe, and I had no attachment to The Shredder as a character, so I'm fine with him not being human.

Im really liking the IDW Shredder. For the longest time it was Mirage Shredder, and that was mostly the look of him because he wasn't in the series that much. The IDW Shredder is a rad interpretation of the character IMHO. He's a douche, coupled with the mystical aspects of the character, make for a solid Shredder. Granted I'm about to read City Fall arc so my opinion may change.

Me too. I think Kevin Michael Richardson delivers a menacing performance. Although the OT Shredder ties with Nick Shredder for me. I should have added an 's there because now it sounds like 2012 Shredder has this horribly unintimidating first name. Nah I'll just leave it as is.

Oh I forgot about True Shredder! Need to dig out my Ninja Tribunal DVD again. I liked Utrom Shredder as well. Mean little sucker, but he does have a special place in my heart all the same. I guess Karai was an ok Shredder although she couldn't really get the Shredder laugh right and her,"Watch out for Shredder," just didn't do it for me in the season 4 intro. I always imagined utrom Shredder coaching her at some point before he was banished by the other utroms.
"Oh no, sweetheart. Say it with more malicious intent and work on that fear inspiring laugh a little. And be sure to call Splinter rat. Just rat. Rodent'll also do in a pinch." Say what you will about utrom Shredder. He may not appeal to some fans, but he was great with kids. Well there was that bit with him going crazy and attempting to destroy all of existence in Turtles Forever but surely we can overlook that. He might have seen the future and discovered that such villains as Tripple Threat and Jammerhead would take center stage. I mean, wouldn't you wanna destroy all of existence if you knew morons like those were going to show up and go all Saturday morning cartoony?

Movie 1 Shredder tied with Mirage Shredder.
Mirage Shredder because of the fact that he was the TMNT's first real villain, and even after he was defeated it really didn't solve anything, and it just made things more complicated for everyone the Turtles ever befriended.
Movie 1 Shredder was a slightly watered down version of Mirage Shredder. He was ruthless and menacing, without any of the gray area that Mirage gave him.
2nd-2012 Shredder- Easily the most intimidating and downright scary Shredder.
3rd 4kids- Ch'rell was awesome because we got to see the dichotomy of him being Saki (a respected business man) and the Shredder (an underworld crime boss/intergalactic criminal). Sure he became crazy and wanted to destroy everything but whatever. Plus his outfit was boss.
4th-OT Shredder because he's such a goofball but had his badass moments as well. The relationship between him and Krang was great because it's so ridiculous and refreshing.
5th-IDW Shredder- The most Ninja-esque of all the Shredders he is a cold calculating specter of the past that feels it's his birthright to rule "A City of Lights" and isn't past alienating even his family to get what he wants. His plans tend to blow up in his face though.
6th-Movie 2 Shredder- Pretty much a live action Fred Wolfe Shredder.
7th-Next Mutation- Dude looked like a Power Ranger villain and fell off hard. I imagine the other Shredders sitting at a bar laughing at him as he wallows in the corner pleading that he didn't get a chance to shine "I was gonna make a comeback in season 2 damnit..."

1984 (Comics) -He was barely in the comics, but he was menacing and developed.
1987 - This was the most fun and entertaining iteration of the character to watch.
1990 (Movie) - Shredder was intimidating amd well acted, that was until he went full on psycho in the sequel.
1997 (Next Mutation) - Easily my lesst favorite iteration of the character. He was too hammy, too over-the-top, and got defeated in an unsatisfying, undignifying way.
2003 - Easily my favorite version of the character. He's menacing, Had a somewhat interesting back story, and at time was kinda humorous.
Idw Comics - I like him, he's a decent villain, but I like 2003 more.
2012 - I kinda like him, my only problem is that he's a bit on the bland side. I mean, he's the main villain, and he's barely appeared in the show at all. He barely does anything except for berating his henchmen and exchanging empty threats which he almost never follows through with.

Yeah, I wish 2012 Shredder did more in the show. That's one thing I've noticed since the show began, barely any screen time at all. I think he's menacing and all, but would love to get to know him a little better as a character. More fight scenes with him would be nice.
Don't much care for Next Mutation Shredder either. Never really found him all that believable. The voice certainly wasn't menacing at all. Love how he was portrayed in 2k3. I liked movie Shredder better in the first film. He wasn't bad in the sequel but there was just something about the way he was portrayed in the first.

You see I completely disagree with everything you've said here. He doesn't have to do much to be a menacing badass. I don't want him to have 10 different fights with the Turtles, since he almost killed em all in one fell swoop. Why should he get his hands dirty if he got his goons to do his bidding? That makes him all the more menacing, he doesn't need to do much to scare the crap out of not only the turtles, but his own men.
Hell even in the movie his line "There will be no mistake. This time I go myself..."
Let's you know he's done playing and is gonna get $h*t done.
Besides, to me, the one 2012 fight was the most memorable TMNT vs Shredder fights I've ever seen(excluding tmnt#1 Vol1). Better than any of the 2k3 TMNT vs Shredder fights combined (and they were good!). Sometimes less is more. It'll make their eventual re-match all the more special.

Movie Shredder gets an honorable mention from me, but it has to be the Utrom Shredder. Ignoring the fact that he was a foot tall alien, his design, voice, and characterization as Oroku Saki/Shredder was just so kick ass and menacing. Especially the Lex Luthor vibe he was getting around season 3, it really added another dimension to his character.

I would have to go with Shredder from the first movie because he has realistic goals. He doesn't want to take over the world, he just wants corrupt the wayward youth of New York and accumulate wealth and power. He is also quite imposing both while fighting the turtles as well as when interacting with the foot/gang. I dunno though, it is quite possibly because I watched this movie non stop as a kid, and he is imprinted on me as Shredder.

IDW Shredder
Movie Shredder
Original Toon Shredder
Nick Toon Shredder
Mirage Shredder
4Kids Toon Shredder
I think thats the way I would have to rank them. In regards to the original toon shredder being the deepest of the characters... Duh he had the most time to develop. Mirage Shredder was offed before he had a chance to develop more character 4Kids version seemed very one dimensional, Movies had to focus on the Turtles obviously.
IDW so far has spent a significant amount of time exploring the Shredder, how he got where he is and why his ambitions are what they are. He is also that physically imposing monster we saw in 4kids. Anyone is lucky to scratch him in combat let alone best him. So far he is definitely my favorite iteration.

Easily the IDW version. He seems to be the strongest of all the incarnations. He also has the best background history for me.
