View Full Version : The Guardians of The Galaxy Effect on Ninja Turtles Success?

The Guardians of The Galaxy release date is one week before the Ninja Turtles film will be released now on August 8th. I am curious if the move to attempt to make more profit or atleast against itself will be problematic as Ninja Turtles even if the more notable property will be ignored because of the Marvel label of GoTG. Captain Phillips did well with $215 million after debuting just one week after Gravity with its notably much larger 676 million haul. Obiviously one is a lesser hit but still just as buzz worthy. Will Ninja Turtles have that kind of steam or will it be able to go up against a Marvel label even if a lesser property and still have finacial success? Has any word on the proposed budget been made public at this point? That might just be key to profit. Thoughts?

Perhaps if the turtle film has good Word of Mouth (which both Gravity and Captain Phillips had), then it won't be too much of an effect.

And to be honest, I would think Ninja Turtles is a brand people are more familiar with than Guardians of the Galaxy.

Hellboy 2 opened one week before The Dark Knight. It got totally overshadowed and to this day still remains a really underrated film that under performed and never made it's budget back.

Edit: P.S. Del Toro would be the perfect director for a TMNT movie. Just watch Hellboy 2 and tell me I'm wrong.

I always wanted Spike Jonze to direct a turtles movie. I feel like he would have completely nailed it.

That was the golden army one right? That movie was bada** ! But yeah I think TMNT is actually the bigger name in this one. I don't think it'll have a big effect at all. Movies are always released close to each other. The people that want to see it will.

I would say that, from a marketing standpoint, TMNT has more going for it. It will probably take the number one spot away from GOTG.

TMNT won't do that well. Kids watching the Nick show will find the movie unrecognizable and older fans like us hate everything we hear about it.

TMNT took #1 from 300 in its second week but 300 went on to make 211 to TMNT making 96 million. I think the budget might be key to its success. Some movies can't be predicted. Some don't. Or make only a few million whie others make milions more than expected. It might be wise for us to promote it amongst people we know whether it turns out to be a bust or surprisingly good. Its atleast got Shredder which has a benefit that Ninja Turtles III and TMNT did not have.

Guardians of the Galaxy could have an effect on the sucess of TMNT depending on well its received, and how much it makes at the boxoffice on its first weekend.

If by any chance Guadians of the Galaxy remains #1 on its 2nd week which would be TMNT's first week, TMNT will do fine at the #2 spot.

Honestly, Those two are my most anticipated movies this year.

I'm really curious to see how GotG does at the box office. We'll see how strong the Marvel brand is without a superhero or actor that the masses are familiar with.

I also don't think it'll hurt TMNT's box office at all. TMNT is a widely known franchise while GotG isn't. TMNT's box office will be fine it's opening week. You've got a new group of fans that will see it because of the Nick franchise. You've got hardcore Mirage fans that will see it despite the controversy simply because it's TMNT on the big screen. You've got fans of the OT that will see it. You've got fans that will see it just based on the nostalgic factor alone. You'll even have people see it because Michael Bay's name is attached as a producer ( these people don't know the difference between a director/producer).

Long term success will depend on the quality if the film obviously but it'll make money it's first week.

I've always thought the same! His use of pratical affects and love for creatures, I would love to see him do TMNT.

On the GOTG issue the box office is often unpredictable but based on the buzz surrounding each movie ill say GOTG is gonna have the upper hand. Ive heard nothing but positive feedback from people about GOTG production, and the exact opposite from TMNT, but im super stoked to see both and be there at opening day for both.

Another thing that TMNT has going for it, despite being a very successful and well-known brand with a big fanbase to boot, is that this will be the first live-action TMNT film in twenty years. I think people will go and check it out come opening weekend. Even if GOTG is the better film, TMNT has a lot more going for it.

The two biggest stars are voicing a tree and a raccoon. Will fans go see them do voice work?

Zoe Saldana isn't going to sell tickets.

I love Chris Pratt and think he'll be a big star after GotG and Jurassic World but he's not a big box office draw yet.

Marvel has been able to lean on well known properties (Hulk, Thor, Capt America) without having to use big stars to sell tickets. We'll see if they've developed enough cred as a studio when GotG and Ant-Man come out.

Not sure it will affect things at all. Do people not see movies they want to see because of another movie they also want to see being released at the same time? That's what I call a double feature.

But, cyber cubed is right on.

I disagree. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) did just fine and holds up. As a preschooler I could tell a difference in Hamato Yoshi's pet rat avenging him as Splinter opposed to Hamato Yoshi being Splinter itself and it did not keep me away as the human foot over robotic and no Technodrome gang with Shredder. That being said as long as a healthy marriage of takes is presented it will left up to the acting and audience interest.

There may be no way of telling.Captain Philips did well but got the much lesser gross to Gravity. Just this weekend Ride Along shocked studio anaylists with just edging out the January opening ewcord while Jack Ryan failed to make 20 million,a notable franchise restarting with respectable actors(something Ninja Turtles lacks for the most part).

But, cyber cubed is right on.Sometimes, I don't see every movie I want to see. I wanted to see Captain Philips, but I REALLY wanted to see Gravity. And I never got around to seeing Captain Philips. But a lot of tickets aren't sold to people who want to see that certain movie. A lot of times people just decide to go see a movie on their day off, or for a date, or just something to do with their friends, and they choose one.

Guardians of the Galaxy is something I don't particularly care about and I really am curious how it will do in the box office. Other than Thor 2 alluding to it, and having word-of-mouth say it's related to the whole Marbel Movie Universe thing so therefore you MUTS watch it, and the possibility of Thaos as the bad guys... don't really think the average joe is gonna be all that excited about it.

Don't be so sure. Word of mouth I've heard and seen has been good, and a lot of fans of other Marvel movies are curious to see it, either because they've seen the hints about it in Thor 2, heard about Thanos being in it- from Avengers- or they are Marvel fans who are already familiar with the characters. Personally, I fall under the first two categories, and aprtly in the third in that I'm a fan of ALL Marvel films, and most of their characters in general. There are plenty of people who will see it simply for the novelty, as well- how many superhero movies feature a talking raccoon? Yeah, that's got me curious, too.... :twink:

Fixed that for you. Kids love movies like that. It will bank on THAT, if nothing else! And for the record, it is a superhero movie in space, which makes it BOTH. These are the COSMIC heroes, the ones culled from other worlds besides just Earth. Technically, Thor is one of those, too!

Many may be operating under a certain bias since this is a TMNT forum, I can't say which movie will take off or which one will fail since I seen absolutely nothing from one movie, and only a little of the other. I will say that GOTG has a better cast in my opinion, and just because its fan base isn't as big as turtles doesn't mean that it wont be a hit. Personally I hope both movies do well because I'm a huge Marvel fan and huge TMNT fan.

This movie is going to bomb so badly. They're already obscure characters from the comics, so making a film about them is ridiculous.

Even most Marvel fans see them as third-tier characters compared to Spiderman, X-men and the Avengers.

I second this..... The argument of them being lesser known characters doesn't hold up either. Big superheroes like Fantastic Four,Daredevil, and Green Lantern have bombed and those are A to B level characters. It all comes down to direction and marketing. I thought the first Captain America was awful but it had good marketing, and a good opening.

Doesn't look like there are any other GotG fans here. As a fan of both GotG and TMNT, I am definitely more excited for GotG for a couple of reasons.

1. Better Director

Jonathon Liebsman has more films under his belt, but none of those films are really that noteworthy and some are just awful. Put Michael Bay as producer on top of that and it just reeks of disaster.

James Gunn, on the other hand, is very passionate about GotG, having written the script himself. He's also a big comic book fan who has expressed interest in doing a Thunderbolts film. He's only directed two other films but their much better than Liebsman's. Slither and Super are both great films and I know the fun and goofy aspects of those movies will be included.

2. Better Cast

TMNT does not have a good cast.
-Megan Fox is not a good actress and was chosen to pull in the Transformers crowd.
-William Fichtner is a fine actor, but a horrible fit for Shredder. Changing him to Eric Sachs is also a horrible mistake.
-The turtles are mostly no names and while I have nothing against them, I'm not excited for them at all.

GotG has some strong actors.
-Chris Pratt is a fantastic fit for a goofy Star Lord. (Giffen's Star Lord was more edgy and broody, while Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's was more goofy and fun yet serious. They obviously went with the DnA version)
-Bradley Cooper has a great talent with his voice (watch his celebrity impressions on youtube) and I'm excited to hear how they make Rocket Raccoon sound.
-Vin Diesel voicing Groot is fantastic given that he voiced The Iron Giant a long time ago. He's working with the same sound engineer that he worked with during The Iron Giant as well. He will only say "I am Groot!" but I believe that Diesel can give that simple phrase more emotion than most actors they could have chosen.
-Zoe Saldana as Gamora should be just fine. Saldana is a terrific actress and she seems very passionate about the project in the couple of interviews we've seen.
-Dave Batista looks the part of Drax the Destroyer and while I haven't seen him act before, I hear he has some good charisma. He's the one I'm most worried about but it's nowhere near as bad as pretty much the entire cast of TMNT.

As for the success of either film, they each have their own goals to accomplish.

TMNT has to find a way to not turn off the masses by deviating too far. The scrapped script involving aliens was a bad sign and if it were still happening, the movie would not be very successful. Also, the turtles need to look good.

GotG has to gain exposure. They've been doing a good job by including the characters in video games and by giving Bendis the current run. This gives exposure to the audiences that definitely go to see super hero movies. Next they need exposure on a mass scale. Chris Pratt hinted at a huge marketing campaign coming up in the future, so it looks like they're ready to start spreading the word.

I personally want GotG to succeed and TMNT to fail, but only moderately as to stop any chances of a sequel. This is how I feel if my predictions about their quality is true. For all I know, the TMNT film could be fantastic, though I don't see how based on the evidence.

I've been catching up on the history of GotG over the past few months and I'm really excited for the movie. Plus I'm a big fan of James Gunn and Chris Pratt. In terms of popularity, I think Rocket Raccoon could be the next Yoda with the power of Disney behind the promotion.

I love Will Arnett. Arrested Development is one of my favorite shows of all time. That being said, I doubt he's going to be too big in the movie. He could very well be the most entertaining though. Will Arnett has done some bad movies before. He most recently starred in The Nut Job.

I wouldn't call it a traditional sci-fi flick. More like a pulp sci-fi flick. More like the old space operas that inspired Star Wars. In some ways it will be very Star Wars like, but will lack the name recognition to attract audiences. Still, it won't be a slow sci-fi like old Star Trek stuff.

I am excited to see him and Abby Elliott. Two actors I like before they were cast and were pleasant surprsies amid a negative outlook. If the latter was cast as April instead my outlook would personally change quite a bit. The only thing then is the portryal of The Shredder. We need to get a PR buzz going somehow its just the matter of how to execute it to counter the early negative response of the alien turtles angle that has since been removed.

I don't think GOTG will have much effect on the new movie. TMNT is a bigger name then GOTG, more people are aware of it and are probably more likely to see it, especially if they've been keeping up with what we've been hearing about it. Really I can just see TMNT making more box office and overshadowing GOTG, which'll just be seen as a nice cult movie.

Of course that's all just conjecture on my part, things could end up differently.

So far the only misfires by Marvel have been Punisher and Elektra as far as characters that have not made much money. War Zone is the only one of any Marvel movie not to make budget while the other two made only a little over budget as did Elektra. Its possible GotG could join those two but its unknown really until it hits theatres.

One thing to consider is Guardians features an animorphic raccoon who fights evil has several one liners while the next week animorphic turtles who fight evil and spout one liners will be released. Will families think its too similar and choose the Marvel label if not the one that comes first or would a talking raccon who fights evil and makes us laugh encourage the family audience to see four talking turtles who fight evil and make us laugh?

I am referring to Marvel characters overall Ninjapug not just those since 2008's Iron Man and under the Discney Corporation.
