if images of the actual characters are going to look better than this, they need to release them. Because that looks terrible. I have been so anxious to see what they look like, this seems like an unfair first look… I'm still hopeful, but that head looks bad

also just noticed, it looks like mikey has some sort of design/tattoo on his arm. That would be kind of strange. I don't know why, but I perceive that as far more strange than clothes.

This movie needs to burn in the fiery pits of hell! All our worst fears are becoming true!

First of all, I'm not digging his design.

Secondly, I don't think it'll be THAT bad in the finished product. Kid's Halloween costumes aren't exactly the most high-quality representations of the characters they're depicting. Now, if this were a figure from Hot Toys or something, then I'd say what we see is what we're getting. But just to give you some perspective...

The humanoid faces were obviously done so the real-life actors could still be seen through the Turtles.

How disgusting. Why would I want to see Turtles with human faces? Are one of them going to have a sex scene with Megan Fox?

The clothing and chain don't bother me...the sunglasses are a little weird to see, but whatever. What really bothers me is the tattoo and the skin, which is way too lizard like in my opinion. Way too many scales! I don't want to judge his face, because let's face it...it's a mask! It's obviously going to need to be a little "human like" to fit a human child's face! I mean, it looks like he has a human nose, but that could be just for the mask. The lips and chin, however, I'm not so sure about. It's by no means a great/perfect design, but I don't think it's downright horrible...I mean, at least it's not as bad as this:

Be afraid if you're a fan of the 2012 cartoon and the IDW comics if this movie is a hit...they'll start mandating that the characters have to start looking more and more like this new live action movie's versions of the turtles.

They did for the 80s toon towards the end in a sense, they did for the final season of the 2003 toon.

Transformers had it happen in their recent cartoon as well where the designs were heavily movie inspired.

Vicky82
01-22-2014, 01:18 PM
I don't mind the design of the costume/body but it's the face/mask I don't like.

Thinking about it the mask doesn't match the costume as they are both different shades of green it doesn't seem to match. Maybe they used a fake mask to throw us off.

I doubt it, the Nick show is too recognizable to kids now for them to change the designs.

And IDW's Turtles already look different everytime the artist changes.

It's real because its similar to previous reports of the Turtles wearing human clothes and having humanoid faces.

There are too many coincidences to ignore.

I've never seen that, although I'm sure someone can correct me.

But, I think the Soul's Winter version of the turtles have some tribal markings, either paint or maybe tattoo.

It's a children's costume for probably a cheap penny, the mask will of course be of low quality compared to the printing of the body suit.

Exactly it an almost perfect to the very vague disruption and nothing more the skin and mask are two totally different textures the line clearly looked photo shopped and anyone with basic photoshopping skills and the description could make this. Seriously

turtlefanforever
01-22-2014, 01:26 PM
But it seems very likely based on description. Bay said they would have human eyes and humanoid features. And the only report this costume goes against is the one from the user "Donnie" about the pants.

Donatello19
01-22-2014, 01:28 PM
Out of all things to see the design on, this has to be the worst. It's a children's costume...it's just a cheap body suit with printing on it, and a rubber mask. They're obviously not going to get this to be 100% accurate, especially the mask and body proportions. Now, if we had, say, an action figure or something to look at, then we could have a more accurate representation. The only thing this costume really confirms/shows us is the clothing, accessories, tattoo, and body/skin texture.

Candy Kappa
01-22-2014, 01:30 PM
Even the skin texture could be all wrong, it loos way too unorganized and unnatural... Too fake.

Halloween Costumes aren't always movie accurate, you gotta take that with a grain of salt. Besides, usually the mask has to be made to fit the head of any human being. So I though that is the final design.

Candy Kappa

Not trying to judge but . Look at the photo closely, the textures run off the edges and the pose looks just like the one they used for at older Michelangelo custom with this hubbub thrown on top. The mask looks nothing like the rest, costumes aren't prefect but they're better then this

It's a cheap Halloween costume, they always look terrible. Seriously, even simple costumes like Superman look bad. All this tells us is that the figure descriptions were legit and the TMNT are going to have unique looks/wear some clothing.

Honestly, I can live with the clothing, it's the nostrils I hate, but like others have said that could just be a health and safety thing (it's kinda important kids can breath wearing the costume after all). I'll reserve judgement for the trailer which should hopefully be soon.

This is true. With UK Toyfair now and NY Toyfair in a few weeks they had to know something like this would probably slip out, they've been so secretive for so long (worrying really, most major films have a teaser a year or more before release) an official image should have been released before UK Toyfair (before Christmas really) to both start the publicity build up and make sure Paramount got to do the reveal rather than a merchandise leak.

Why isn't anybody questioning the source of this information? (Yet I do recognize people are suspicious of the costume design.) Uh... and how come the link has nothing but asterisks? It's hard to take that costume with any degree of seriousness if there's no official link of a store (i.e. Halloween USA) claiming an "officially licensed" 2014 costume. Or unless some can post a legit site including it to support this image.

...But the reactions in this thread sure are hilarious.

Okay everyone. Here it is, now it's a halloween costume, so don't take it as the be all end all of the design. bUT I'm so excited seeing this start to come to fruition. I spent 7 months of my life working on TMNT the movie. I'm such a huge fan and it was a dream come true to work on. I promise that the designs are cool and that movie is going to be a lot of fun. I'll be posting more as it develops! Here's the LINK to the article [Thanks to ******************************]

Here's a blog entry and a tweet from Jared Krichevsky, credited on IMDB as "creature designer" for the film.

Are we good, now?

"The coolest thing about this new Turtles look is that Paramount really seems to be taking a more authentic Samurai Warrior/ Japanese culture approach toward the Turtles and we think that is a pretty cool thing. It would certainly be consistent in regards to original vision of Turtles creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, wouldn’t it?"

I saw this on FB and thought I'd check out the storm it caused on the boards. Wasn't disappointed. I've tried really hard to stay positive about the film, and I'm going to keep trying. It's a kid costume, not final look. Who knows when we see it fully rendered it might look passible.

...But I honestly don't know what to think about the facial appearance of Turtles now. Yet it's odd that something like this leaks so early, but yet the plot details are still relatively guarded. Any of you think the staff behind the movie are testing the public's reaction instead, to see if they need to make last minute post-production changes?

I have to say though, I never liked the Turtles having big diameter craniums/skulls like humans do. It always made them look more "humanoid" or alien-like rather than looking like a turtle.

Okay so I checked the article and reread it again, the teenagemutantninjaturtles(dot)com article is merely claiming that "Someone has unveiled a first glimpse" and was mistakenly sent to a costume company.

I don't think the design of the head reflect on what the Turtles look like in the new movie, Humans have round shaped heads most of the time and the Turtles usually don't. Given that the actors had cameras pointed at there faces to capture facial expressions, I don't think they are using the shape of there head to render the Turtle's faces, But rather, To render there mouth movements.

Alright, so according to what they said, the images were sent out to costume companies by mistake. With this logic, the other three turtles are out there somewhere.

They say directly "We’re unveiling the Michelangelo image today, but don’t worry Turtles fans, we’ll be revealing the other Turtles shortly."

To my other point regarding this statement:
"The coolest thing about this new Turtles look is that Paramount really seems to be taking a more authentic Samurai Warrior/ Japanese culture approach toward the Turtles and we think that is a pretty cool thing. It would certainly be consistent in regards to original vision of Turtles creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, wouldn’t it?"

Not only do I highly disagree that the leaked image looks ANYTHING like Eastman/Laird's original vision - I'm not picking up ANY "Samurai Warrior/ Japanese culture" vibe or look from the picture, so not sure WTF they are talking about here. Perhaps they are referencing Leo (as it's been rumored he wears samurai-esk gear)?

Regardless, unnecessary clothing aside, the head designs are just freaking awful....everything from the shape of the head to the protruding nose (let alone nostrils) to the friggin' human type lips.

It's about as terrible as I think it could ever get.

Hope real images come out soon and prove me wrong.

Because in the particular example you used, it didn't back up your statement. That's actually the best looking and most faithful adaptations (for a costume) I've ever seen to the source material that was being used/referenced.

If that was the case then we'd have seen rough designs and concept art by now which is not uncommon. In fact wasn't Optimus Prime from the Transformers movies slightly redesigned after fans reacted badly to designs they put out early.

It doesn't really suprise me that we're seeing merchendise first, surely that's the main concern with this movie. The plot - such as it will be is probably a turn off anyway so best to keep it under wraps rather than let this movie's stigma grow even more - hasn't Kevin Eastman been as good as saying that?

And let's not forget this is Michelangelo, we're looking at.

Considering that the justifcation for the turtles wearing clothes is so they are more ninja-esque but that falls by the wayside if some of them are not wearing actual martial arts gear.

A better spin - and one that fans have made is that it's supposed to better highlight the turtles individual personalities but that's not what the powers that be are claiming (so far) and even then has it ever been necessary before? It also doesn't make it any less fugly.

I've been looking forward to the complete meltdown of this place once an official-ish image hit. You guys do not disappoint.

there is definitely something fishy about this. i am now feeling like i wouldn't be shocked if this turns out to be fake

if someone who actually worked on the movie was releasing this image, how would it not be taken down by now? there is ZERO chance that anyone behind the movie actually wants this to be the first look, the reveal of the turtles that have been kept SO secret until very recently, and even then we've only been given some descriptions. no images.

and it is true, after looking closer at this photo, it looks completely fake. yes, it lines up with leaked details of the toys, but that info has been available now for a week or so? Plenty of time for someone to shop this according to those details.

According to the article, images of the costumes were sent out to costume websites early, by accident of course. They listed Mikey, and now since the link is no where to be found, Paramount obviously made them take it down, along with the other turtles. HOWEVER, the article writers claim they have the pictures of the other turtles and will be releasing them shortly. The whole thing is very confusing, I'm not sure if I quite understand it myself..

Seriously. What aspect of Raph's personality is being expressed by the purported loin cloth?

It's just pointless.

EDIT: Also, I really have no idea what the point of the sweater wrapped around his waist is. Usually when people do that, they were wearing it at some point and will be wearing it again.

I doubt he'd be able to wear it, given his shell. It'd look hilariously awkward, in the not good way. So it's just...for show? How odd.

I'm curious why, at the end of Jan, stores are getting pictures of Halloween costumes for a movie that wont be released until Aug.

Costumes are sold all year.

I want so badly to not hate this but I just cannot stand the protruding nostrils or the lipped look. Sure nostrils could work (if they're subtle) and if it was just that I'd prob get used to it but humanised lips are all kinds of weird to imagine.
The clothing I'm ok with, it could add some interesting movement during a fight scene.
Tattoo again, yeah, I liked that on Zulli's so could be good but it won't make a human>turtle okay over a turtle>human.
I'm still stupidly clinging on to the hope though that I see the film, love it, and have to eat my words but it ain't looking likely.

Apparently not hahaha. Besides, it's really not difficult to find crappy photoshop work from professionals. You could probably Google that exact phrase and get hundreds if not thousands of examples.

Hey, so, you guys?

The Turtles might have something resembling lips because you absolutely need those muscles to make any sounds remotely resembling English phonemes.

In cartoons, you can get away with lip-sync because it doesn't need to look realistic. The Nicktoons models can be flat-faced and lipless all day long because, at the end of the day, as long as their mouth makes a vaguely convincing shape that corresponds to the correct sound, you'll buy that it's what they're saying.

In a "realistic" movie, that doesn't quite fly. You need those muscles there because, if we're to accept that these mutant, humanoid Turtles created through alien science are capable of speaking our language, they need them. And we've never had anything close to resembling an actual attempt at lip-sync in a live-action Turtle film before.

So, yeah, sorry. Lips. Pick another horse to beat. And I'm all aboard the "beak-faced, Zulli-esque monstrosity" train for any future incarnation that wants to ride it. It's just that, not only is this not a bad alternative, it actually makes more sense.

Also, he has nostrils so he can breathe? I'm not even sure why that's an issue.

It is absolutely crazy-pants that, if nothing in regards to the actual approach or content of this movie thus far had put you off (which would be fair), this design would.

But you'll see it opening night either way.

Can we get real on what possesses fans to say things like this? I've never understood it. The whole, "X is different from X so I'm going to boycott it!" type of mentality. I think it's possibly to reflect the actor more than speech process. Looking back to those pics of Doc Connors the cgi, live action hash usually carries some glimmer of the human behind the role. I don't know why..maybe so the public identifies with the actor? Anyhow, Noel Fisher has fairly distinctive lips and this could be (an albeit poor) representation of them.

Sorry - don't buy it. The '90 TMNT movie was set among live actors and I bought them talking - still do. The original movie and a lot of it's affects still hold up today, which is saying a lot.....and the lip syncing was off in a lot of scenes. To say the CGI turtles in this movie HAVE to have lips to be believable is ridiculous.

So ... yes? That's exactly what I'm saying.

The '90s movies could kind of get away with it because the Turtles were practical effects. The same level of leeway in facial realism on a CGI model would look all kinds of cartoony. Those lips are, quite simply, part of the kind of facial structure the Turtles would have to have in real life were they to speak fluent English. It's something I hadn't really considered prior to this design surfacing, but it's totally true.

1984TMNT

The '90s movies could kind of get away with it because the Turtles were practical effects. The same level of leeway in facial realism on a CGI model would look all kinds of cartoony.

No, we're not on the same page. I think they could easily make the mouth move in the exact way it needs to without "puffed" out lips. Just because in reality, an animal would need full on lips to pronounce English words doesn't mean those same lips need to be shown or rendered exactly the same way.

The point is that these are mutants and don't need to look exactly like humans, even when talking. As you stated earlier, as long as their mouth moves in generaly accepted motions that coincide with certain words, it would be believable enough.

Obviously, we have different opinions on it - and it really is hard to tell without actual visuals to compare. It's a subjective call at best.

After a few hours of being in full on meltdown mode, I have calmed down.

And on that note, I must say......... this isn't that bad.

Actually, it's pretty good, and it's definitely unique.

I must applaud Jonathan Liebesman and Co. for pulling off a more humanoid, or rather, more realistic look that isn't totally creepy looking, like some of the fan art we've seen created over the years. After seeing many humanoid variations over the years, I can honestly say that this could've been much, much worst.

Honestly, if you were to take away the nose and the more noticable lips, its REALLY not that different than other designs. And huge thumbs up for the texture on the rest of his body.:thumbsup: That little detail is very nice. Hopefully its featured on the heads as well.

Now, as far as the clothing is concerned....... that's not that bad either. And like the head design, it's no where near as bad as it could have been. I, personally, like the clothes. I feel they fit nicely.

The only things about this design that I don't like, from what we can see from this costume, is the 'Next Mutation' like shell (or at least, that's what it reminds ME of) and what appears to be a tattoo on his left arm. Though, the design of the tattoo is definitely cool, so it at least has that going for it.

So for now, I'll give this design a 7.5.

Almost gave it an 8, but that godforsaken tattoo bothers me too much.

So to make it a bit clearer; if the turtles' design will look anywhere near this, above the already awful and off-putting content, then I will consider boycotting this movie.

Can we get real on what possesses fans to say things like this? I've never understood it. The whole, "X is different from X so I'm going to boycott it!" type of mentality. Not just, "Hm, I don't think I like this version," or anything more nuanced. And it's always over the smallest, least important things.

You know, I don't have a problem with them doing a new TMNT movie, not at all. But when they stay away completely from the concept, screw up the story, hire overpaid worthless actors and give us crappy designs like this one I think we have enough reasons to boycott it!

I'm certainly not going to embrace that. And why is his head so big and bulbous at the top? I seriously can not stop laughing at this.To be shaped more like a human skull, and fall in line with the other human features that you choose not to embrace?

They're disgusting human faces on green heads.

This fits right in with your mental issues. Textbook.

The only funny scenario in that for me is one where a parent comes back and kicks the guy's ass.

"I'm still not giving any candy"

Spoken through a busted lip I'm sure.

Honestly, though. I hope nobody is seriously considering doing some ish like denying children candy because they have the 'wrong' costume on. I know it
was probably a joke but I really don't even like the idea of that.

I don't see why those things should be embraced. If anything, it feels pretty unimaginative to make the Turtles' designs more "human". They're mutant animals. From a design standpoint, making them look even more humanoid just makes them look less interesting.
