View Full Version : The designs of the Turtles is proof to never trust Kevin Eastman

I love Eastman as a person and some of his contributions to the franchise are great, but man, he does not know "quality control" for anything.
I know he has no control over the franchise anymore, but the fact that he's so excited about bizarre designs for the turtles with nostrils and human clothing, white Eric Sachs shredder, and everything else is just sad.
I wouldn't be surprised at this point if Venus shows up at the very end of the movie to set up a sequel.

Just wait until we see it or some actual pictures...

Firstly, maybe Kevin Eastman's opinion is just different to yours . Remember, history has shown that he's generally quite open and accepting of new ideas and new takes on the TMNT.
Second, even if he isn't thrilled with the new designs he's currently a paid employee of Viacom, working on the IDW comics and consulting on the Nick series and the new movie (though we don't know how much real input he gets in the last two), he can't come out and say "they look terrible" in public even if he's saying it behind closed doors.

Why is Kevin Eastman the guy to "not trust" when we're discussing a MOVIE that an ENTIRE TEAM OF PEOPLE WORKING ON are the ones responsible for what will hit the screen?
And Eastman is just a consultant who had a day or two to shoot a cameo. Do you think he was on-set and "Ok"ing the sculpts and everything like Bryan Lee O'Malley being on set, everyday and working along side Edgar Wright on Scott Pilgrim?
Do you think Stan Lee is the guy the Marvel Cinematic teams go to for changes to the costumes and so on?

Just watch the series and ignore the films than like those Transformers fans did, imagine how much they hated those films they had to deal with? Ironically enough, Megan Fox was the female lead of that series, she's sure making herself well known with big time fandom's, so far not in a good way but yah know

I think the designs are amazing and completely trust in Kevin Eastman! They were exactly exactly what I expected when he said they're looking to Rise of the Planet of the Apes for inspiration and it has a whole 'Avengers' feel to it. :)
Someone needs to teach the difference between facts and opinions to CyberCubed so we won't have pointless threads like this one in the future.

Sound advice, at least there is the (awesome) Nick show that I wouldn't mind betting will end up being more popular than this movie anyway so hopefully not everything TMNT becomes BAYTURTLES like TF's :P

So long as the Nick cartoon and IDW comics don't get forced to add hints of things from this new movie unlike the Transformers franchise has slowly been degrading into looking more and more like the movie appearances as time has moved on.

I prefer Eastman's approach to Laird's approach. Laird's view is narrow and keeping it close to the Mriage comics while I grew up with the '87 cartoon and that is what I see as the Ninja Turtles to this day. Without the willness to expand the view and explore the franchise we would not be here today. Just a few comic book readers that found it in the back issues bins of a few comics shops and liked the random pick up. Granted I much rather ignore Next Mutation and Image as opposite ends of distaste, we would be given great avenues and great characters and concepts we would not othersie have. With Kevin we get Krang and Dimension X AND Triceratons and Fugtioid. With Laird's selling the intellectual rights to Viacom it was bittersweet. The bitter part is I like the careful nurturing of the characters while the sweet is the characters not original under him alone or Mirage based are ignored while a significant number of great characters are overlooked and affect quality and potential. Kevin's view may run into a brick wall i.e. the almost simultaneous crap shots called Next Mutation and Image it still has opened the door to much more good than bad. I am glad that once Peter stepped out Kevin stepped back in. Not nearly as Peter but it does give me a sesne of comfort that someone is carefully sheparding the franchise.

I thought I could live with the designs from the maquettes, but the mock poster has me a bit worried. I don't like how the color on some of the turtles faces becomes beige around the mouth area. OOTS had something like that, which really annoyed me. Leo is the only one who is spared from this... but from that small picture of the maquettes, Raph and Mikey (unlike the poster) seem to be more green around the face...

Would you openly say a project you were involved in was crap if you trying to sell the product? If you are no longer involved in it and had nothing to lose you might speak more openly but not out right blast it. Kevin is being diplomatic. His job is to sell his and Viacom's product. Just@because he says its great does not mean much one way or another in quality. What it does show is his continued love of his product after his interest was devoted elsewhere for so long.

Cause this move has soooo much to do with the nick series right?(sarcasm) It was only a matter of time before someone brought it up. This is about Eastman. And it's not really a matter of opinion, it's just using this as an example f things he raves about and supports but doesn't really care about as long as a new tmnt thing is out there.

Meh, I reckon that when he sold his shares of TMNT to Laird in 2000 would be when his 'heart wasn't in it'. Looks to me like it got rekindled a bit with the IDW issues that he's been working on, and that he seems to have fallen back in love with his characters...
As for never trusting Eastman? Bit extreme, maybe he does really like the designs?

I don't doubt that at all. I didn't say I never trusted him, I just take his opinions now with a grain of salt. Because he is on boar with EVERYTHING. He gushed about anything turtles related. So you can't expect things to be good just cause he says he's all for it.

Yeah, just because Kevin is on board with the movie in some form doesn't necessarily mean he had anything to do with the Ninja Turtles designs. Remember We Wish You A Turtle Christmas, Turtle Tunes, and the Coming Out Of Our Shells tour were all produced when Eastman and Laird owned the property, meaning they had to okay the production of these things. I doubt they were involved much more than giving the companies producing these works the rights to do so.

Just out of curiosity, we heard about Kevin Eastman talking well about the 2014 movie's direction, did Laird ever get a chance to look over it as well? If not, why not? ;) ...Now that would be interesting since Laird has a more strict preference of how he envisions the Turtles. I mean their opinions contrast greatly with each other if we consider The Next Mutation.
Personally for me, the Turtles (especially with their clothes) just scream an ostentatious display of how "cool" or "tough" they are, and yeah I understand they are teenagers, but as I mentioned in another thread, it's visual stereotyping to an absurd extreme.
For example... take a look at Leonardo's armor:
http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=6283&d=1390959830
They're going to make Leonardo wear some form of ancient Japanese armor (as seen in the pictures of the models), yet Shredder is going to wear a futuristic style form of blade armor (rivaling close to a Transformers costume)? Where's the practicality in that? For all of Leo's tactical wisdom, wearing ancient armor isn't necessarily logical then, but visually I guess they have to tell the audience he's the "traditional" one. Okay... as if his personality couldn't have expressed that in the film...
Yet ultimately as "cool" as their designs may be for some, it's all going to boil down to the quality of the storywriting (plot and characters) which of course is the most uncertain aspect of this entire film.

My thoughts exactly, another great example that hits pretty close to home is when Megan Fox decided to bad mouth a movie she was promoting, and Bay took offense (Rightfully so) and canned her (only to bring her back).
These people are hired to sell a product, and yes Kevin may actually think they look really good. There decent at best, and when you consider where Kevin is standing in all of this seeing something he made for a good laugh between him and buddy this has to be to cool for words to see how this has grown and transformed in front of him.

Now that we've seen the designs, I have no trouble believing Kevin Eastman digs this. Maybe he really dug aspects of TNM. Why shouldn't he? The dude has seen the franchise go every which way, like we have. We all like different things. Some of us love this. Why wouldn't he? Does he have to be Kevin Eastman: Super-Purist #1, just because he co-created the series? Now everything different has to be worse, in his eyes? At least he's not butthurt all day, every day, like some of the people here.

Its this kind of thing that wrong with fans today there so entitled feel that they should and forever always have the last say in anything to do with there fandoms but the thing is every one has a different opinions one fans love is another hate But un like know they just had to have faith the let the creators do what they do. what bugs me now is that creators will go against what they truly feel is right to appease fans ans most times this can lead to a less then positive turnout

I'm not sure why we need to "trust" Eastman one way or the other.
The guy seems genuinely thrilled any time the Turtles get attention and just isn't dogmatic about the franchise in anyway. Which, I think, is a fair stance when your goofy indie comic becomes a high-earning, evergreen phenomenon. It's as fair a position as Laird's serious-handed approach. He also doesn't have any control over the franchise at this point -- He still enjoys working with it, though, so why sh*t on it?
Certain elements aside (Donatello's glasses are the mother of all red flags), I like the designs. Had they been used in a different movie, I'd probably feel even better about them.

This right here. I agree.
The Turtles have proven they can work in any multitude of "genre". Where they fail is in the execution of the product. Generally TNM is a sore on the franchise and for the fans. It was meant as a kids show, like Power Rangers, and it has that look and feel. That would have been decent enough. But it's faults lays in the mary-sue and the inability to execute a quality product. Eastman MAY HAVE BEEN behind this IDEA but he had no control over the show or what the people working on the show were doing.
It's the same with this movie.
To get the go-ahead in Hollywood, a film needs to be pitched for funding and all of that. Sometimes this happens before casting has been done. Sometimes the writers/etc find actors interested and they use that to pitch it (Sam Jackson being on-board with Snakes on a Plane from the start. To pitch this you have a big name actor on board with a product, this makes it easier to sell in a pitch).
Movies and TV shows almost always start in one way but come out the other end totally different.
Lets look outside the franchise: The X-Files had a great run on TV. Then the spinoff came out for The Lone Gunman. This should have been really damn good based off the tone of The X-Files, the Lone Gunmen themselves being show-stealing characters, and the writing and quality. Instead, I was unable to watch the entire series due to poor characterizations, stupid exclusive characters (Jimmy Bond or whatever that idiots name was), and eventually potty and body fluid humor (puke, poop, etc).
Turning back on The X-Files and the later seasons were not living up to the quality standard in characters or writing as the previous sessions as well.
Star Wars in its original draft was called "The Star Wars". It was drastically different in characters and events than what we all know as. In it's subsequent edits, the original theater versions have a much different tone than the most recent re-edit. The most obvious being Han shooting Greedo first in cold blood. Edits after show Greedo shooting first thus Han's shot comes off as defensive.
Even in its sequels, there are parts that were written that got altered from previous drafts (Luke's father not being Vader) to being filmed and cut entirely, changing the tone of the film or characters (Yoda revealing that he had Obi-Wan withhold information from Luke thus altering character dynamics between these three characters).
The original 3 movies can be compered extensively from what could have been in the original drafts and edits, to what became in the theater releases, and what they have since become with all the additional edits, add-ons and various tweaks.
Even in a movie like 3000 Miles To Graceland, there exists two versions of the movie: one that's more dramatic and action orientated and the other plays more as a comedy. The 2 cuts exist because there were different views on how the film should be. In the end, the more "action" version was released. I'm not even sure the other cut has ever been released.
Or sometimes a studio will force a director and his team to alter the film from it's original intended version to something they feel would fit better.
See films like Blade Runner's original theater cut vs. "The Final Cut" or the updated Total Recall theater version vs Director's Cut. These two movies, off the top of my head, show drastic differences between what was intended and what the studio wanted of the film.
Again, Eastman may have LOVED the pitch, ideas and look of the film.
Question comes down to: Will the final product be the same movie he was so thrilled about at the start?
Will the film be edited smoothly so it's a fun, seamless ride or will it have odd cuts, things that should have been shortened or removed, excessive plot holes, or areas that dont make sense because something was cut in an edit.
How will the next few months of production and post production change the movie?
What will the studio want of the team to alter so it's closer to other similar films being released at the same time?

I agree about just not being content to have "new" TMNT. At Heroescon last year I asked an artist what he thought of the new Star Wars and told him I was HIGHLY skeptical of it and he said "man it's new Star Wars and that alone makes it awesome" but I don't feel that way at all. I see no need for a "dark" or "edgy" TMNT just for the sake of there being one. I would much rather have a film that is more in line with the original, which I feel like struck a perfect tone, that just tells a great story and captures the essence of the characters that we all love. I think it's possible to make a film that pleases the fans and still "appeals" to people that just want to watch a good action film. There's no need to alienate either side.

In a way, though, the original movie was "dark and edgy".
It was true to the comic book source... which was a bit more "underground". People knew the turtles as lighter characters thanks to the silly cartoon.
The movie was a tribute to the comic, not the cartoon and as a result, upset parents. This is why the tone was shifted for TMNT2.

Upset SOME parents. Mine thought it was an affirmation that things for kids don't have to be JUST for kids. They liked the cartoon as a "ha ha, kids like goofy sh*t and this isn't bad" kind of thing, but enjoyed the film as a genuinely good movie. I've even screened it for people in their 50s and 60s who never knew about the cartoon, or heard of it but never saw it, mostly parents whose kids were into other stuff, and the movie plays well to them, too.
Only a small, but vocal group of parents really complained about the first movie's violence or tone. And they were the type who'd complain about skirts going above the ankle. Sadly, they tend to write letters while sane people just go "eh".

Small groups of parents making complaints are likely to make executives buckle. Back in 1997, 19 parents complained about an episode of ReBoot being 'Too Dark and Violent' to the UK broadcasting authority. As a result of that, the network airing the show stopped airing it about halfway through the third season with about 7 or so episodes left to air. Ever since then, they appear to get cold feet about shows that they're airing in case that they get parents complaining again (this same network aired the 2003 TMNT show over here as well, and apparently they didn't finish airing the third season of that show, and then went straight into the fourth season).
But yeah, I can kinda see now from other posts in this thread why things such as Turtle Christmas and Turtle Tunes were produced. They probably wanted to expand the brand a bit and see what would happen. However, they probably had no idea that they would be so awfully made.

Not true! He's been working hard on the new IDW comic (which kicks ass, btw). He drew the annual, which is the first Turtle's book he's every handled all of the art chores on. He draws variant covers for all of issues, consults on the book, draws fill-in issues and provides art for side projects.
He's very much involved with all of the new Turtles output lately, and everything that has surfaced so far has been AMAZING. If the movie sucks, it won't be his fault, so give him some slack. Who knows, maybe this new flick will be awesome.

It's lame, those parents were such "joy kills" why did they let their kids watch it if was such a big deal. All they did is make the second movie weaker with pointless moaning. When the turtles used their weapons, they didn't exactly cut the foot to a bloody mess.

Just read through the letters in the Archie comics to see the mentality they were up against back then, people are calling them Satanists for showing the turtles meditating FFS.
How amusing it is that back in 1990 they managed to give us what ended up being the best TMNT film against all the adversity and now when you can do whatever on film and are theoretically in the best place ever to make the be all and end all of Turtle movies and this movie is what we are going to get.
NO, I haven't seen it yet-but it is going to suck.

Yeah that's the way it happens. I really hope it doesn't succeed though. If I do see it I'll go on like a bargain day and early in the day so it's cheap. But I don't know anymore. True. But the turtles aren't horribly re-designed. It's such an over reaction by pessimistic, over nostalgic fan boys.
The new turtles look mean as hell, only this time they gave them even more physically defining characteristics, clothes, and accessories. That isn't like a horrendous mutation of how they should look.
They look bad ass. Who knows if the movie itself will be as good as the 1990 original, but so far in terms of aesthetics it looks great. Shredder too.
Anyone complaining, did you honestly expect them to re-hash the same look from the previous franchise? That's honestly what you wanted ... AGAIN? What's fresh or exciting about that?
Well, one can at least expect them to look like turtles, which the designs on the poster don't.
ObiWanFan4life
02-01-2014, 01:08 PM
No, they clearly look like turtles. Shells, turtle faces, ninja bandanas / weapons / samurai armor. How does the look not scream ninja turtles? They don't look more or less like turtles than ANY other incarnation in the franchise's history. Please. How pessimistic can one be to even try to act like they don't look like turtles. What do they look like then? Are you going to say frogs?
Now this is just me but, they look like battletoads. Or the aborted offspring of Shrek and The Hulk. Now the individual leonardo design is what I think of for a ninja turtle.

It is just you. Or anyone who already had their mind made up regarding it.
If you showed any of these concept art, models, action figures from this film to ANYONE and asked them to tell you what they're looking at ... EVERY single one of them will tell you ninja turtles.
Why? Because they're clearly ninja turtles. Just say you don't like the design and move on. Because they're very obviously ninja turtles. They don't look like anything else.
I have to respectfully disagree with EVERYONE unanimously recognizing them as Ninja Turtles, but I still respect your opinion.

My g/f never watched ninja turtles growing up. Isn't particularly into it, or even comics. She acts like she's interested on occasion because she knows along with Batman it's what I grew up obsessing about.
Last night while she's bartending I sent her pics of just the small, somewhat grainy picture from the on set models.
Immediately she replied with ... "those the ninja turtles from the new movie? they look really cool." She was impressed with the look, new instantly what they were, and she's not even a fan. Or even a casual ninja turtle fan. But yes, continue with your hating agenda.

What's so bad about the poster? Look at the previous pic I just posted of Leo. Tell me that doesn't look bad ass ...
I don't know if the film will be good. I'll wait to judge it on it's merits when I see it. But I'm not going to sit here and complaining about the looks of the turtles while hearing people say they don't even look like turtles.
It's taking things way too far with their hate, or predetermined disdain for a movie they haven't even seen. How on earth do they not look like recognizable ninja turtles. All they have is extra gear, and clothes.
I think it takes a big man to just say hey, I'll judge this thing definitively after I see it. I don't get why you have such high expectations anyway, apart from the 1990 film. Which was awesome, and still holds up well. TMNT II, TMNT III, Next Mutation, TMNT 2007 ... they all sucked. I doubt it could be worse than any of those ninja turtle films.
You're a TMNT fan, right? That's why you're on Technodrome? Don't you WANT it to be good?
I do, but with every announcement I hear about it, I slowly start to lose some hope for it. I want it to at least be entertaining like the Transformers movies. I feel like they're trying to "Batmanize" TMNT. By that I mean taking a property that isn't batman into batman by trying to make it dark and realistic. Plus movie 2 was at least entertaining.
ObiWanFan4life

TMNT can be dark. It can be gritty, or plausible reality. That's what made the first film work.
Which is why the first one is decent. It was like the original comic book (loosely) . I mean, this one looke like it might be fun and entertaining, but I'm skeptical because of the people working on it.

It's not a hater agenda. It's hardcore fans disagreeing with the direction they are taking with the franchise. It's not the same thing we've came to love. Say you take a beer, then add 2 gallons of water. Is it still a beer? Yeah I guess so but it's gonna taste like crap and won't get you drunk. That's essentially what they are doing here. And anyone who knows anything about tmnt could tell these were the turtles especially if they have knowledge of the new movie coming out nobody say they couldn't tell, like what else would they be? Long time fans will eventually need to discover that in order to stay fresh, some experimentation must take place. What's wrong with the ancient ninja-inspired designs? It tells that Splinter really knows his traditions and these Turtles bow to them. The futuristic Shredder? It reeks of a possible Technodrome and using it to try to have technology beat good ninja fighting just like the OT and Fast Forward. Just take this project for what it is; as long as it isn't technically flawed is what matters. A so-so score will be fine with me since it does show that they care about some of what they are doing. But obviously to draw an audience by following certain trends (think what today's kids/tweens/teens enjoy, such as short attention fans and more abstract, tech-friendly arts) in order to appeal them, and technology is part of the draw. I'm sure if this is a blockbuster, there are still plenty of loyal fans like us that prefer to use classic styles once in awhile, and it would perhaps open new possibilities.

I learned to not trust Kevin Eastman a long time ago. He's just too liberal with the property. I'm glad he can enjoy almost any incarnation of the Turtles, but it's a bit dumb of him to tell the die-hards at comic conventions that this movie is going to be amazing and that they're going to love it. It'd be like Chris Claremont swearing to everyone that they were going to love X-Men 3.

True, but from what I'm seeing from the on set pictures, to me it just looks like the Michael Bay version of the Fred Wolf cartoon.
Personally, I'm of the camp that's most likely not going to see this movie and will try my best to ignore it. Yes, I'm a Turtles fan, but I'm not going to go and put money in Michael Bay's pocket and see this film just because the Ninja Turtles happen to be in the movie.

Lets say you enjoy eating chicken.
Someone has just prepared for you a chicken that was near death in age, whose life was taken by semi-truck and left to rot in the Arizona sun for 3 days. Then it was microwaved until fully cooked and served to you.
Now you know you've always loved chicken in the past, and you're open to new things as it's a versatile meat, but this just looks absolutely disgusting, and you know that the means of making it made little sense, were off-putting, and have rarely yielded positive results prior.
You gonna sit there and say "I need to taste this before I can have any reasonable suspicion that it may be horrendous"? Do you need to eat it to know that it at the very least looks bad? Ultimately, even if by some rare chance it's delicious, it's one ugly and haphazardly prepared meal that nobody would be in the wrong to complain about.

I like this. Sums it up pretty well.
As for me personally, there are 3, literally 3, things I like from what we've seen so far.
The Turtle Van(even though it looks a little too professional), The Turtle lair, and some aspects of the Turtles' designs.
And out of all the stuff we've seen and heard, that isn't much.
Yes I'm well aware we can't have the same old, same old over and over again.
But there's sure as hell a difference between adapting something faithfully while still making it for new audiences, and changing stuff just for the sake of changing stuff.
This movie seems to be changing stuff just for the sake of changing stuff.

Well, when I say it's not perfect, the movie really isn't the turtles' story. It's Splinter's and kind of Casey Jones'. Sure the turtles are the main characters, but when Splinter is captured by The Shredder, he's rescued....by Casey Jones. At the end, there's a fight with The Foot Clan and Shredder gets defeated (in a anticlimactic duel)...but by Splinter and Casey Jones. Casey also loses some sympathy points from me at least when he casually murders the Shredder.

I love it when people pull the well there's a lot of new people joining up or "you're in the minority" card when people express an opinion different from theirs. I've been a turtles fan since I was 8 years old and stayed a fan I remember searching for turtles sites in that dead period before volume 4 of TMNT and the 2003 show and all these sites had were fan fiction or rumors.
With that being said while I prefer the traditional look the turtles have I'm not going on the whining path some have taken with the turtles since the movie images got leaked either. I viewed it as this they're suppose be real-life turtles getting mutated into humanoid form and real turtles aren't that cute or cuddly. Donnie, Mike and Leo look fine, Raph hmm I hope they touch him up before launching a trailer.
As for clothes it will be weird seeing them wearing pants and foot wear or in Raph's case a do-rag style mask and loin cloth. Since people are calling out fans because folks happen to like the design I have to take those who want this movie to bomb to task. I'm all about keeping the turtles relevant for long as possible. So yeah I want this movie to do well it adds to the success the show and the comic book series are enjoying. And if this movie sucks, it's not like Paramount is going to rush out to do a more traditional "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" flick next year. It's going be a long while before they touch a turtles movie again.
Lastly this whole debate remains me of the DmC debate last year old Dante fans were complaining about the look and the game went on and got good reviews and the only game in the Devil May Cry series that did better than the reboot was the first game.

No.
Most of us are just not going to delude ourselves into saying anything about this movie looks good save for one or two things.
I'll give you an example from my point of view:
I love Godzilla. I've been a Godzilla fan for a long time. When I found out they were making a new american Godzilla movie, I was skeptical. But I waited for more info.
Found out who was directing. Liked the choice.
Found out some casting, mostly liked the choices(Cranston and Watanabe excite me more than the other two, but I don't hate the other two).
Saw some images, the amazing Godzilla encounter at SDCC, the awesome viral marketing. The amazing concept trailer with the dark tone and then the fantastic actual trailer.
95% of what I've seen of the new Godzilla movie has me incredibly excited to see it and all signs point to it being a very good movie.
This Turtles movie has given me the complete opposite experience.
I've loved the Turtles literally all my life.
First I found out who was involved. Michael Bay and then Jonathan Liebesman. Neither of them very good.
Then I found out the Turtles were going to be aliens from another dimension. That rightfully pissed everybody off, and, hopefully, they changed it back to what it should be.
Then the casting started rolling in. Megan Fox as April. Terrible. Will Arnett as Vernon, which meant Vernon was getting a lot of screen time. Bummer. Less time to focus on the TITLE CHARACTERS.
Then Danny Woodburn as Splinter and William Fichtner as white, possibly military related Shredder. Even worse than Megan Fox as April.
Rumors of the Turtles' and Shredder's designs started sparking, and they didn't sound good. Not a single official thing released from the movie, and now it's only 6 months away. Again, not good.
Then the Turtles' designs leaked, more and more. They were lackluster. Then Shredder leaked and it was terrible.
And here we are.
It's the complete opposite of the Godzilla movie experience for me. I love them both, and want things related to them TO SUCCEED and BE GOOD. But I'm not going to delude myself if they just plain aren't.

I felt the same way about the whole thing except not much of a Godzilla fan, yet that movie looks bad ass based on the trailer. It certainly seems rushed and like he just grabbed a bunch of his buddies together and was like hey let's go shoot this thing. Ya know? That's the vibe I get. And also like he is trying to get as many name actors as possible

I'm not in the business of changing people's minds if you don't want to see the movie fine I prefer to see things for myself before passing judgement. And again using The Devil May Cry reboot as the latest example of fan boy outrage gone wrong, from the first image of Dante being leaked the one he's taking a mug shot to the first trailer all fans did was bitch and complained. Game came out and those very vocal classic Dante loyalists got quite because what they said didn't match what the end product turned out what they claimed.
It seems the real hipster thing on the internet is trash Megan Fox, because she's the only bad actress in Hollywood, and for Danny Woodburn Master Splinter has always been voiced by a Japanese men just ask Kevin Clash and James Murray. If we're going by directors while Steve Barron directed the first turtles movie and tons of great music videos he also directed "Coneheads"just saying. And an Ninja never fought paramilitary guys expect for Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 and Ninja Gaiden 3.or American Ninja, Ninja Assassin(the scene post Raizo getting arrested and the last action sequence) and that sequel to Ninja on Netflix.
We still haven't seen one trailer with these guys in action yet but **** it the movie is doom, it's the "Plan 9 from Outer Space" of comic book movies. Just saying have an open mind and if you're right then you're right take your victory lap or if this movie turns out alright then every fan wins, and isn't that more important?

It seems the real hipster thing on the internet is trash Megan Fox, because she's the only bad actress in Hollywood
No, she's clearly not the only bad actress in Hollywood. But she IS a bad actress in the new Ninja Turtles movie, which is why a lot of people including myself are upset. I myself would have cast, say, Anna Kendrick. Good actress and wouldn't stick out nearly as much as Megan Fox does and will.
and for Danny Woodburn Master Splinter has always been voiced by a Japanese men just ask Kevin Clash and James Murray.
So just because Splinter has sometimes not been voiced by a Japanese man he shouldn't EVER be voiced by a Japanese man ever? This would have been a GREAT time to actually get a good Japanese actor for the role. I would have went with Hiroyuki Sanada. Good actor and when I hear him speak I can definitely hear wise Japanese martial arts master, which is what Splinter is and has been for quite some time. Know who I don't hear in my head when I think of Splinter? Danny ****ing Woodburn. I also would have cast, just off the top of my head, Ken Watanabe as Shredder. Fantastic actor, very intimidating presence, and, bonus, Japanese man.
If we're going by directors while Steve Barron directed the first turtles movie and tons of great music videos he also directed "Coneheads"just saying.
Yeah? And? So? What? I guess Barron got lucky? Okay? What matters is it was a good movie. He got the Turtles right. Liebesman has not directed a single good movie in his entire career. I highly doubt, given what we've seen, he's going to start now.
I don't even know what the **** this is supposed to mean. So, because some Ninjas is some media in the past didn't fight other Ninjas, it doesn't matter that the Foot Clan aren't Ninjas? Even though, as far as I'm aware, they've been portrayed as Ninjas every time they've been adapted for their entire existence. Again, as far as I'm aware. And yes, even in the '87 cartoon. Even the most BASIC Foot Ninja look we've gotten in the past is better than what we'll be getting in TMNT2014. And yes, we know exactly what they'll look like in the movie.
Well that was fun.

Don't be a fool. 19/20 people on this site are here because they never stopped being an active fan, so nostalgia is not a factor in the slightest. If the majority feel the same way, it's not really fair to call it an 'over-reaction'.
Truth!
Best. Analogy. EVER.
Well done mate!
Hah it's so true!
I wonder how the movie would have ended had Casey not backed the truck up into the fire escape...?
It's interesting to point out though. I like that the Turtles don't get the final "hit" on Shredder. He totally overpowers them. I like that the movie comes down to the revenge/old rivalry. Plus, after being kidnapped and beaten, it's good that Splinter bested Shredder in his rage.
And Casey, being who he is, can get away with "killing" (or the intent to kill) since he's Casey. Had any other character pulled the lever, I could see people having a problem with that haha
(Just ranting...)
And really, the turtles only got involved in that whole mess because Raph went after his sai.
That's some "the most important characters in Star Wars are the guys who didn't shoot R2 and 3PO in the escape pod at the beginning of A New Hope" right there

Yeah? And? So? What? I guess Barron got lucky? Okay? What matters is it was a good movie. He got the Turtles right. Liebesman has not directed a single good movie in his entire career. Well that was fun.He saying that just because there are "Militarized" doesn't mean they aren't Ninjas i always say i good judge of this is snake eye from Gi joe while hes a ninja he is also a commando And if you look at the images we have seen while some are holding guns others are hold swords, stun batons, and other martial arts weapons. Also if you look closely they all seem to have the knuckles bandaged like a fighter would not a military personnel seeing as it restricts movement in the finger for firing weapons. and obviously from info gather there will be a common ninja style but even while the whole Ninja look isn't in fact how actual ninja commonly looked like. Ninjas use what works best in the situation this is a fundamental rule of ninjitsu. Any weapons the best suits a situation. if ninjas thrived today would they not use guns and other means and gear.
http://www.marketplace.org/topics/world/modern-japan-being-ninja-no-way-make-living
there are also many works stating that most modern military special forces are the ninjas so its quite funny people think militarization of ninjas is odd.

It seems the real hipster thing on the internet is trash Megan Fox
Yes but Megan Fox is relevant to this discussion because her casting is such an obvious thing to happen in movie produced by Michael Bay - people were joking about her playing April as soon as we heard his company was producing it. It shows a complete lack of imagination.
Not to mention her inclusion brings to mind the other 80s property that Bay handled and Megan Fox starred in. I think it's perfectly reasonable to worry if TMNT will go the way of Bay's Transformers movies....all other indications are that it will be worse.
and for Danny Woodburn Master Splinter has always been voiced by a Japanese men just ask Kevin Clash and James Murray.
It's not a case of getting an actual Japanese voice actor although I thought Mako was great in the animated movie but rather the character who is essentially race-less has always been portrayed as a Japanese-esque wise master of martial arts. Unless Woodburn is an actor with a greater range than his previous roles have shown it seems he's likely charged to play Splinter like he's played every other role he's had.
If we're going by directors while Steve Barron directed the first turtles movie and tons of great music videos he also directed "Coneheads"just saying.
If we'd had internet culture back then Barron signing on to direct may have been met with a negative reaction but bare in mind in 1989 hardly anyone conceived that a TMNT movie could be done with even a semi-mature tone. When we all saw the movie - he proved that it could be done.
Now that we know it can then it's natural we'd look at the resumes of those making this new movie and see the odds aren't good of getting something of that quality.
The turtles have plenty of non-ninja antagonists themselves but the Foot are their primary ones and have always been a ninja clan. In fact it's very important to the TMNT's entire story.
If they wanted to do a movie were the turtles fight the military then they could have either gotten Bishop and his Black Ops guys on come up with an original military group rather than altering the most important villains the of the franchise.
I'll never understand why people advocate waiting for a trailer given that trailers are notoriously deceptive.
I've said this before but we don't need to have all the jigsaw pieces in place to figure out what the finished picture will be. In fact studios rely on that hence why they allow the people involved to give interviews, release concept art, designs and trailers. It's all to hype us up and convince us the movie is great before we've seen it.
The lack of any of the above at the last stage in the game is troubling and it's natural to think that perhaps that we don't have any of that stuff because they know that in this instance we wont care for it. Especially when you consider the information we do know about this movie is having the effect of us rolling our eyes.

I hate Megan Fox's design too. The plastic surgery she did on her face is awful.
Look at older pics of Megan from her early 20's, she was a real beauty back then and not the angry frown face she always has on now.

I never knew she'd altered her face (Megan Fox).
The movie will answer all. She looks smokin' hot to me.
Maybe we should get Eastman's opinion on how megan Fox looks, then we'll see if we can really trust him, lol.
As to never trusting Eastman... well if anyone is a fan of the turtles... and he co-created them...then you must have trusted him at some point. That's not to say one can't ever not trust him again, if one chooses to take that view.
Eastman said the new designs were cool, iho.
He has the right to say that as anyone has the right to say whever they like that is relative to one's view.
For those like CyberCubed who are obviously not liking the new designs, then yeah I wouldn't trust Eastman's opinions either.
I love the new look tmnts and trusting Eastman has nothing to do with things in my book. I can think for myself.

...are you kidding? This kind of role is what got her famous. A human caught up with a group of strange creatures fighting their enemy. That's what Transformers was.. All im saying is she is a grown adult who works for a news station IN TF she was a teenager with next to no plot point but to be there for same in TMNT there is more to it than that. It not really the same at least not in my eyes
Never mind the fact that the very first pictures we saw of her were her on a trampoline bouncing up and down
Not like there wasn't a show called the Man Show whose entire last 5 minutes was hot women bouncing on trampolines.. So what your saying is any female that works out in normal clothes fully dressed and jump up and down while working out is overly sexualized? First the man show showed women in bathing suits and skimpy outfits jumping on a large trampoline. She is there reporting for the news with many other people she happens to be wearing the same thing any normal person in that situation would if shes being "overly sexualized" in your eyes is not what i think of as overly sexualized I.E. Skimpy tops tight jean sweat, garter belts and corsets. as she has in the past.
...I love how you say this based on literally nothing but some set pictures but then a few words BEFORE say "i will wait to judge once i have enough evidence to judge." Awesome.. Batons are a martial art weapon used in many different forms. its a melee weapon similar to an escrima stick
You guys are thinking to literal ninjas to you mean dude wearing traditional gi using only swords and knives when in fact traditional ninjas used EVERYTHING as a weapons, sticks, stone. think of a collapsible baton as a modern escrima stick(which ninjas would most likely use)
That is how the baton related to MODERN ninjas
what i see when i see one foot from this movie
Wearing black, concealed identity, wrapped fists and knuckles, wear mobile clothing good protection, and carrying melee weapons while many do have guns, Guns are no more then updated blow pipes for crossbows, or sling shots or bows or any other ranged weapon. Some are carrying tofa a traditional military weapon and well as a traditional martial arts weapon

1. I looked up the first Transformers movie and that movie got mostly positive reviews and I generally thought it was a decent movie as for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen you take that up with the writers. By the way Transformers G1 fans are notorious for hating on anything that's not from that era. As for April outside the first movie what was April role in the other turtles movie? In Turtles 2 she let them stay at her apartment and deliver the challenge from the Shredder. In Turtles 3 Turtles rescued her and role got cut fast and TMNT she found Leo but didn't tell the other turtles and told the Turtles who Max Winters was. BTW Sarah Michelle Gellar was in both Scooby Doo movies, just saying.
2.I forgot about "TMNT" but using your point against you the voices of the earlier Splinters one voiced Muppet and other puppet voices and the other one had four roles two in the same movie, then Splinter and recently the Darkness II(really good game by the way) the only one that had long acting resume was Mako.
3. Using the director argument against the other person: While Steve Barron had success with the first turtles flick he also got the crappy "Coneheads" movie and super ****** The Adventures of Pinocchio on his directing resume. Not bashing Steve Barron but folks using"well, well the director sucks" argument opens you up to that counterpoint. Secondly how do you know what direction the movie is going? All I got from this movie are pictures of guys in mo cap suits, Megan Fox in a yellow jacket other on set pictures and leak designs nothing about the plot or origin.
4. As for the Ninja vs military thing,I view it as once again as people trying to use as an excuse to prove their hate for this movie. Do you think it's possible these guys had ninjitsu training along with their military training, in times they have to use hand to hand combat?
5. Again you gave me another opening here, I hope the Godzilla fan isn't reading your comment about trailers, because using your logic for all you know it could be a stinker like the 1998 movie and they only selected the best parts to put in the trailer to get that fan base all jacked up. But I expect you will say well that's different.
Again if you don't want to see it fine stay home no one is begging you to go, but don't try to talk people down who might be interested. As for we what you mean 'we,' kemosabe anytime I see someone expressing some hope for this movie they're either a plant or whatever.

And just because some of the Splinters in the past weren't voiced by Japanese men, doesn't mean he shouldn't EVER be voiced by Japanese men. This was the perfect time to get a great Japanese actor to voice Splinter, but Bay and company aren't interested in quality.

You know IMDB is free right? He directed the original Turtles movie BEFORE he directed Coneheads and Pinocchio. 3 years before Coneheads and 6 years before Pinocchio. Jonathan Liebesman has yet to direct a good movie.

Which remains to be seen. But most of us here are literally only saying they look terrible and don't look at all like the Foot Clan probably should look like. And it's a shame that the Black Ops Military Bros who apparently were also trained in Ninjutsu can't even be bothered to carry any kind of ninja weapons but instead use guns and maybe sometimes tactical batons. Real shame that.

Oh yes, there's absolutely a chance the new Godzilla will be bad. But, unlike nearly everything about this new TMNT movie, everything I've personally seen so far looks very, very good. Including the trailers.
Which is the point people who are negatively reacting to this movie are trying to make. Nearly everything we've seen SO FAR does not look good.

Hey, I hated the idea of Sean Astin voicing for Raph in the new toon, so guess what, I haven't watched one show because of my disgust, I've actually been absent from this place for a couple of years now. I was brought back because of my interest in the movie. Michael Bay is my favorite director and I loved what he did with the Transformers, and I love Megan Fox too, she can't be any worse than the Aprils we already had. But, I am still skeptical and I'm just going to wait for the trailer, but I just know when I am going to like something. Kind of like when I saw just some photos of the new Captain America movie coming out, I just knew I am going to be loving this one come April.

As for the Ninja vs military thing,I view it as once again as people trying to use as an excuse to prove their hate for this movie. Do you think it's possible these guys had ninjitsu training along with their military training, in times they have to use hand to hand combat?.
Ninjutsu isn't hand-to-hand combat.

What does this have to do with Megan Fox being a bad actress? She is. She's even said she's not a good actor herself.
http://io9.com/5290263/megan-fox-transformers-is-not-a-movie-about-acting

Slow down chief It seems you're working overtime to convince people to see things your way.. Again Transformers 1 got good reviews those are the facts don't like it? Change the transformers movie wiki page. And since you brought up bad movies your choice for April was in more than one bad movie. Secondly you're the one who brought up movie directing resumes I didn't, Barron post first turtles flick he has gone on to make bad movies and wiki works too BTW.anytime you Liebesman bring up I'm going to bring up Coneheads and Pinocchio to rub your face in it.
As for the new look turtles themselves outside Raph, the other 3 turtles look fine, bulky as hell but fine. As for Splinter I guess Barron wasn't looking for quality either when they cast Kevin Clash to voice Splinter over a Japanese actor not once by two more times.. Moving along.
As for everything you seen, all they show were the actors in mo cap suits, stills of April, stills of actors in their suits being led around by foot soldiers, stills of April and Raph, a kid Halloween costume and stuff from a toy fair. As for Godzilla again you brought up the trailer so I'm going to use your logic here the stuff you seen could be made to give you the impression things are good. Because movie studios always show people the good and the bad.
For the foot soldiers it seems this is your lone point, well they got guns I notice anytime someone posted images of other weapons on them you dismissed them. Now if you refused to accept visual evidence that contradicts your biased statements then we can't have an honest discussion here.
Again What do you mean 'we,' Kemo Sabe?

um, no. Not quite the same, sure, Ninjutsu contain combat, but. Not on the same level as Martial arts schools have. To simplify since the term Martial Arts is confusing, since a lot of things can be "martial art" from bomb making to how to throw a guy over your shoulder. I'll use the term fisticuffs.
Ninjutsu is not fisticuffs, you will not find a single fisticuffs technique in any of the real Ninjutsu scrolls.

Transformers 1 got good reviews those are the facts...
Go look at Rotten Tomatoes, even positive reviews of Transformers aren't that positive:
It's a big, cool, dopey, noisy, non-stop action powerhouse. It's also too long by a half hour and it left my ears ringing, but it's a lot of fun. - Richard Roeper
The action sequences are so turgid it's sometimes hard to tell which 'bot is doing what, but with Bay steadily hurling fireworks you won't really pause much to think about that, or about how truly inane the story is. - David Germain
It is a teenage boy's wet dream. The girls are insanely hot, the lead is awkward/funny and the action sequences are top notch. - Jeff Bayer
The script may have rubbery legs, but the action is rock-hard. The surprise is the lightness of touch: treat as a comedy for best results. - Ian Nathan

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninjutsu
because "modern Ninjutsu" is not Ninjutsu, many "Ninjutsu" schools that claim they teach Ninjutsu really just have a collection of techniques copied from other schools.
ninjutsu is the collection of skills regarding espionage, infiltration, poison making, bomb making, water crossing, sabotage, trapping, acting, torture, con artistry, climbing, misdirection, acid study and much more of those categories.

Accepting is probably technically accurate word but not one I'd personally use.
Publicly he'll never trash any version of TMNT which suggests he likes it all but I'm guessing if you got a few drinks down he might not be so generous with his praise.
That's not to say I feel he secretly hates it all but it's easy to accept something different in the franchise if you're divorced from any aspect but your small pocket if it.
Kevin a while ago gave an interview in the UK about how the current cartoon show and comparing it to the other two, how it was a perfect blend of 2K3 shows edginess (his words) and the 87 shows humour - but as far as I know to this day Kevin has never watched any of the 4Kids show other than Turtles Forever and I don't think I've seen anything to suggest he ever watched much of the Fred Wolf show either to judge.
He says what he feels is best to sell the franchise including saying the then upcoming Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation would be dark and gritty.
I'm not condemning him for any of this but the idea that "Kevin's cool with it so it must be good" shouldn't be accepted as fact to me.

He's hardly a bumbling oaf. He's just learning how to become a leader, rather than being one off the gate. For once we're seeing them develop into their personalities. & as for that scene in the end of the first flick- They all got their asses kicked by one guy. Splinter took him out.

I know that was how the original comic had it, but I thought it made more sense that it would be Raph who was the one jumped, since he is the one most likely to go topside on his own. It was also great to see how Casey Jones got involved with the gang. The 1990 movie was an excellent combination of the FW series and the original comics.

I was hoping Raphael would have a Brooklyn accent.
He might, you don't know. The Brooklyn and cajun accents are easy to imitate.

I know that was how the original comic had it, but I thought it made more sense that it would be Raph who was the one jumped, since he is the one most likely to go topside on his own. It was also great to see how Casey Jones got involved with the gang. The 1990 movie was an excellent combination of the FW series and the original comics.
I think I would have changed it up a bit though. Have it Casey's relative's farm they went to, and I would have liked to see Leo and Raph make new sais for Raph (since he lost his on the rooftop fight)
They made the right choice there. They were so focused on that farm. Watching waiting for Raph to be better. Honing in on their skills for battle. Becoming focused. You really get the rush.

Here's hoping, but imitating and imitating well are two different things. I would rather him just use his normal voice than sound forced or strange.

He's hardly a bumbling oaf. He's just learning how to become a leader, rather than being one off the gate. For once we're seeing them develop into their personalities. & as for that scene in the end of the first flick- They all got their asses kicked by one guy. Splinter took him out.
I have seen two compilation videos on how Leo in the Nick toon is the bumbling oaf. And that was just the first year of clips. And besides, him being a natural born leader has always been his schtick.

I saw like one part of it at a friend's house, some scene where it was a couple flying through the trees, and then the main vampire tells the girl why no one can accept him or something and he starts to glitter in the sunlight. I just rolled my eyes at that, and then that was the last and only thing I saw of that crap.

That's basically all 5 movies but enough about that new subject someone...

So in other words, you've seen a bunch of stuff pieced together under the guise of convincing already biased people to be even more biased. If you think Leonardo never made mistakes in the past, you're beyond mistaken. They're just trying to give him another dimension that makes him more 'human' or relatable.

CONTEXT is also missing from these "pieced together" youtube videos.
And besides that, flaws make characters interesting.

just stating sorry didn't mean to come off as rude. Remember Captain America was once in not another teen movie as well as the human torch
Disclaimer I've read and seen all the movies as a fan of romance as well as Gothic lore(vampires and werewolves) I was intrigued I enjoyed the books movies didn't really convey properly the universe. And I can admit they're not the best books out there but still enjoyed them. but that me personally I also enjoy The halo novels based of the video Game so I have weird taste

Sorry just found it ironic you talk about context when alot of judging around here is also being done with out context. Nothing really against you i was just laughing. In a good way. Really not trying to be rude. just being weird

A lot of judging is being done purely on designs that we've already seen and don't NEED context for.
Example, the Turtles' designs. The only real context you need is their personalities and we already know that.

And I don't like it, so what? And the clips that I did see were compiled from fans of the show. One was Leo's failed attempts to be cool or some crap like that. In my mind, Leo, while he does make mistakes and jokes, was never the laughing stock of the foursome. I guess I got spoiled from 2K3 Leo.

That is so wrong, such an insult... You're obviously super biased against the Nick series.
& of course I like the 2k3 series, it's just that you make it pretty clear that you use it to draw comparison or hold standards to it... which makes you seem biased and/or not keen the idea of deviating from that particular vision.

I actually use the original comics and the 1990 movie as my comparison point. And why are you so much for the Nick show? You defend it to the point where I think maybe you work for them.
Ha wow that's just...totally incorrect.
