View Full Version : Are the 2014 designs good or bad?
chrisdude

I don't wish to add yet another thread in which to debate the 2014 movie character designs. So, sorry if it turns into that. That may be unavoidable...
But I just think it would be nice to see the Technodrome's opinion, definitively, in plain numbers. Everyone's heard. No riding the fence.
Good or bad?

Poll needs a "Meh..." option.

Maybe use a looser scale to give more options rather than a binary choice.
Needs a “some good, some bad” option.

Nah, guys. That's part of the point. Too much "meh' around here.
Jester
02-01-2014, 06:25 PM
Yep, that's what the flame wars between people who like the designs and those who don't makes me think. That there's too much "meh.." and not enough polarity in opinions...
You serious?

I guess I could throw myself in the "meh" category. The only turtle's look that I'm actually gravitating towards is Leo.

It's really not a black & white issue, I think almost everyone agrees that some design elements are really cool, while others are terrible. So here's another guy for "meh".
But I guess to force myself... there's more bad than good in the latest poster, as far as I'm concerned, so I'll go with "bad".

In all seriousness I do think they're quite bad.
1. Those horrible nostril designs are awful. There's a reason all previous incarnations never had those nostrils. That damn game and now this movie makes them look like freaks.
2. They look too "Hulk-ish." Why are they so muscle bound? They look like huge monsters instead of teenagers.
3. They look nothing like the characters should. It's amazing how the original movies in the 90's captured the look of the Turtles so well in live-action. How CG can be so messed up in comparison is ridiculous.
4. The designs feel like Next Mutation on steroids.
5. Kids watching the Nick show will cry.
RaphAndDonnie
02-01-2014, 06:48 PM
I'm leaning towards meh as well. Really the only design I like is Leo's and I don't mind Raph's all that much. Mikey and Don's are the only ones I don't like. :ohwell:

Bad all the way. I'm surprised by the results. Most of the tweeners probably went with good. There has been a significant amount of new people who came here just to talk up the new movie so it's not completely wrong too assume good is mainly made up by them.:

To be fair, they're called "casuals" around here. They're people who pay no attention to the TMNT franchise but when a movie or new iteration comes out they act like experts about the franchise even though they know nothing about it.

Life-long turtler here who has a life outside of the internet and I voted "good." While I'm more on the 70%ish good, I feel that given the options...well, I like to go with the positive. I think that, given what they could have been, the designs are pretty decent. Not to mention that, as an artist, I'm open to seeing other people's interpretations. Blame it on years of RPGing Donnie as gay, or Raph as a crack head, but I love seeing that cannon characters looked at from a different angle, even if it's just on the physical.

I like the design of the Turtles. I don't like the clothing/accessories. The poster for some reason looks very different from the scale models of the Turtles. The poster made me worry. Hopefully the movie cg looks a lot more upscaled.

I went with bad. I mean, sure, Leo looks somewhat decent (And I do like some aspects of Donnie's design), but other than that, these have to be my least favorite TMNT designs by far. I don't like the fact that Raph is wearing both his regular mask and a do-rag, it looks like a mess. A simple one piece mask would have looked better. And I'm especially disappointed with Mikey's look, it just looks creepy to me.
And those darn Turtle lips...Ugh.:trolleye:

You're preaching to the choir on that one, sister! And I, too, have been a life-long fan (with hiatuses off and on over the years due to- y'know, having a life) who only discovered this site about a year ago. Some people just aren't aware of EVERY aspect of the franchise because they have other things to spend their time on besides just TMNT.
In fact, my own love of all things Turtles was only rekindled a few months before I officially joined up here. And that was mainly due to an internet buddy suggesting I dust off an old tale I'd written back when I was a kid, and I decided to dive back into the TMNT head-first for "research"! And found so much more to love than the few incarnations that were around when I was a kid. Like the 2K3 series (which is now my fave, along with IDW and the OT) which I had mostly missed the first time around due to my work schedule back when it was airing. So ther ya' go.
And for the record, I voted "good". I'm not COMPLETELY sold on the designs, but there are things I like about them, and the more I see them, the more it grows on me.

Nothing against you personally, but I think this attitude is a small part of why the poll leans the way it does. People are just glad the turtles are around and don't want to be ungrateful for their resurgence.

Totally off topic here, but I have to say I have a massive crush on the 2K3 series and am currently working my way through the entire thing thanks to YouTube. 2K3 came out on my 18th birthday, so in between musicals that year, senior year of high school, and leaving home to go to college in the fall...well, it kind of got lost in the shuffle. By the time I saw a season three ep. Shredder was an alien and everything was crazy. It was a bit confusing. Hah.

You'd rather there be a crap movie or product out there than the franchise you supposedly love keep its long lasting fan base and respectable image? That doesn't sound like much of a fan to me. I'm not one to question fandom and I'm not neccisarly questioning yours but I don't get what you would want just anything out there for the sake of something being out there.!:trolleye:

Check out tmntuploader dude has all the episodes and has like some of the end episodes that go together like the 3-5 parters into "movies" so you don't have to worry about the theme song and credits and stuff.

I was surprised at first then thought about the number of people who joined just to talk up this movie, then was like makes sense. There's gonna have to be another one of these after the trailer or movie. Some people are voting good just cause they "haven't seen them in action yet" which doesn't make much sense because the design is the same either way just one is in motion.

Maybe I'm the only one, but it's not the clothes that bother me, it's the character design itself. The facial structure, their stature, their color, the very subtle sea turtle influence, all feel disparate and incongruous. None of the elements work in concert with each other, almost as though it was design by committee.
Many comments have suggested that the film has gone a more realistic route.
I don't get that from these designs, at all.
They also don't look appealing. "hey, screw the realism, let's just have them look like the comics/cartoon..." because that would be awesome, but we're clearly NOT getting that either.
They also do not look original, or cool, but like a hodge-poge of planet of the apes and the Henson TV show dinosaurs from the 90's.
So, what's to celebrate? How could ANY fan say they look good?
If they weren't holding their respective weapons, and wearing bandanas, you'd never suspect they were meant to be ninja turtles.

Had I seen them in deviant art or something, I might have thought it was an interesting interpretation for fan art.
I can't take it seriously as a legit undertaking for the future of the franchise. The more that's revealed, the more I'm convinced the team behind it simply doesn't understand the property.
I'm not one to jump on board just because it has a turtle's face on it. There has been way too much in terms of quality between Nick and IDW for me to be excited just because it's a turtles movie. Give me quality, or give me re-runs.

I myself can say I'm not bashing it because of the people involved. Is it a bad thing Michael Bay keeps having a hand in everything popular lately? No, though it is annoying to see that people think stuff like the Transformers movies are practically works of art when it's mostly jumbled messes of robot parts that make it difficult to know who is fighting who, and a kid running around screaming 'No, no, no, no, no!' or 'Bumblebee!' every time you see him almost.
The bad thing is that these designs don't scream TEENAGE Mutant Ninja Turtles. They scream Next Mutation mixed with all the things that were wrong with superheroes in the early to mid 1990s. Insanely huge muscles, stereotypical getups that are unnecessary for each turtle... EXTREME!!!
That kind of thing. The turtles have personalities that should be easy to put out without stuff like Donatello being all decked out in tech and wearing nerdy glasses, or Raphael being the Hulk in a turtle shell. They did it well in the original movies. Heck, even the 2007 movie did it well to where you knew who was who, what was what, and so on.
If maybe they set this not as an origin story (again an origins story... Why do we constantly need these in superhero reboots?), but as something that takes place after the events of the previous movies or something, it'd be an easier pill to swallow. As it is, it's just another 'meh' movie trying to cash in on the popularity of something while its hot.

I voted good...honesty, not as "meh" or just for the sake of support.
Ive loved the turtles since the OT series and as someone who hates most humanoid fan art and the Out the Shadows designs Im very pleased with how these look. Not too human and not too monster-y. They do like mutated turtles.
Raph doesn't come off as a Hulk to me. He's not drastically larger than his brothers. He's just more muscular and bulky which fits him well.
Clothes make sense if even just to keep warm.
Nostrils are fine. People who complain about nostrils want them to be void of a nose I guess. Doesn't make sense.
Bay's involvement or not I think people just like complaining something is too new. Again, regardless of Bay, I see alot of the same kind of complaining as when the Transformers designs were revealed then everyone was fine with them. For the most part. Now its just that the movies are not taken seriously.

The idea of a few articles of clothing for each Turtle based on personality, to me, is more or less fine.
I don't think a lot of people are complaining about that though.
Personally, I don't like the way they look here because it's going overboard. It's just too much. Over complicated and unnecessary.
The Turtles wear their personalities on their sleeves(or shells, ah thank you). Stick someone who's never seen a single frame of Turtle media in front of the original movie or the 2003 cartoon or even the new cartoon and they'd be able to pick each one out based on personality in a heartbeat. And those Turtles wear nothing but masks and elbow/knee pads pretty much.
These new designs just serve to beat their personalities over our heads.
Now, again, I'm not adverse to clothes/accessories. Give Mikey an I<3NY sticker on his shell, an iPod Donny gave him, and some old converse he found with the souls cut off and I think that'd work awesome. It speaks to his personality without shoving it in our face. Subtle, subtle, subtle.
Leo? Sure, he can wear some traditional samurai/ninja stuff. But pair it waaaay back from what it is currently. The chest thing is unnecessary, but the shoes and the other bits are fine.
Donny should have a bit of tech on him here and there. Give him a brown leather utility belt around the waist and along his plastron with some pouches and a bunch of small multi-tools and electronic gizmos. Let them all have tphones that Donny built(but he made a way better one just for him). Attaching **** to his shell and giving him nerd glasses is just blah.
And then Raph. To me, Raph's accessories should be the scars and cuts and shell gouges he's earned in fights with the Foot/etc and sparring with his brothers. The athletic bandages are also a good idea. The leather loincloth, not so much. Also, get rid of the dumb bandana. I don't like that look on any Turtle in any adaptation.
But as far as the faces go, TONE THEM DOWN. Lose the pouty human lips, keep the nostrils if you want but don't make them so pronounced.
And the bodies. The bodies are pretty much all great. Except for Raph. Scale him down a bit in the shoulders a couple notches. But other than that their bodies all look good. Good texture, coloring, good shells, decent plastrons, three fingers and two toes(I'm not a super stickler for this, just counting it among the good).
Glad they've all kept their weapons(not sure about Donny's metal bo staff though).
But those are my thoughts laid out on the table. I don't think any of that is "whiny nostalgic butthurt fanboy" but hey, what do I know?

They're over-designed. That's the only real off-putting thing to me. i don't see it that way... To me it just seems that someone was trying to express more personally in their appearances.
Things to separate them, make them unique with personalities that define their characters. You can tell what kind of"people" they are without any dialogue because of the way they present themselves...and i think that's realistic.
Take it from a twin who just happens to have 2 big brothers who are also twins... We don't want to grow looking the same.. We want to define ourselves as individuals.
If they go every universe looking identical or somewhat close to it... well this way at least people who don't really know about them will be able to tell who they are

yeah, after I made one comment and people derided me for what I would like to see in terms of Batman costume, I avoid that part of the board and hang around other sections(Spider-Man, Misc TV, DC comics, Superman and Ninja Turtles).
As for the designs while I'm not crazy about some of the elements based solely on the figures instead of the poster, they look pretty good for the most part. I'm not happy with some choices and felt like they weren't needed whatsoever but it's looks pretty decent to me.

From what I've seen, I like them. Are they fantastic all around? No. There are certainly things I would choose to change if I had any say in the matter. But I don't. So I'll be happy with the 75% of the design that I DO like. Some elements of their clothing is annoying, but their clothes are not the ACTUAL turtles themselves. Clothes can be taken off and changed around. It's not as huge a deal as some people are making it out to be. Their mouths are probably the feature I dislike the most, but the problem seems most prevalent with Leo and Mike...and yet in one picture of Leo it didn't look that bad at all, so really, it's hard to base judgement on the few photos we have. And for what it's worth, I like their nostrils and I'm glad they have them.

I'm voting bad.I just don't care for them and not because I can't handle change but because it just screams unnecessary excess which makes me wonder if that might not the attitude of the whole production. I don't really have a problem with the turtles themselves (well except raph who looks more like a primate in the face then a reptile to me and might be a little too bulky for an agile stealthy ninja )but the gear. its like they went out of their way to make them look "cool" with the sunglasses and the tattoos and the armor.:trolleye: I wouldn’t even call it imaginative since its basically just lets have the characters wear their personalities. Plus it all seems to be samurai influenced for some reason even though they’re NINJA turtles.
Or it could be were just happy that were getting a movie and that this franchise keeps going and doesn't die.
nothing against you but I think that might be the most dangerous attitude a fan can have. as people who spend our hard earned money to support something we love I think we deserve a level of care, quality, and genuine effort in what's put out for us. being willing to take any half baked crap being thrown at you as long as it keeps the franchise around just sends the message that you'll buy anything so why bother trying to make anything good.

Sure they're different and perhaps that's why I like them.
I saw a pic of what the toys that the public can buy of them look like and they are nowhere near as good looking as those leaked images of the movie set figures. I always expected as much. Hopefully better quality figures will be available for those who want them to look more like the tmnts in the movie with better details and quality.
Overall I'm really liking the designs and am really looking forward to seeing them in action.

Absolutley LOOVE the new looks. I hate the turtle van though. It looks like some well polished Miami Customs job. Vehicle wise I think they should have done to the turtle van what Nolan did to the tumbler-batmobile. My favorite look by far is Donatello. He has this homemade techy-tinkering look about him where all his gadgets are always breaking down and sparking out on him. My second fave is Raphael. He looks like an unleased, ground and pound somoan warrior. Third Fave is Leonardo. He has the calmness and focus set deep into his eyes that I've never seen so prominently before on the character. My least favorite is Mikey. IDK maybe its the whole halloween costume image. That picture is trully forever burned into my mind with utter disgust. I dont know what to think of him yet.. The production maquette had him in a cool stance but for him I really need to see more before I can say how I feel. I know hell be the comic relief character but I can already see writing on the wall with Jar Jar Binks and Mikey memes for years to come now.
Cant wait to see more but check me off for a very loud and definte YES on the new designs.

I could handle the faces and bodies - although Raph is way too "Hulked-Out" and they all look fat on the poster - but those ridiculous outfits have to go. Entirely unnecessary and entirely overdone. I will not be shocked if Donatello begins blasting at Foot soldiers with a wrist-mounted laser cannon at some point in the film. I know some people would love that. But that ain't what I'm hoping for, sorry.
It's all such a cluttered mess. Did you know that movie studios who make licensed films like TMNT almost always design their characters by doing focus groups where they show concept art for toys to 6-10 year olds? Because they absolutely do. And if you don't want to simply take my word for it... well, the Turtles' designs are about as solid evidence as I could ever hope to display.
And it completely looks like it. They all entirely look like something an 8-year-old boy would come up with if given the instructions, "Draw a Ninja Turtle, but cooler!"
unlundun
02-02-2014, 03:09 AM
They're not perfect but I voted good. That leo close up shot of the maquette is a thing of beauty. I believe the maquettes are a closer representation, I have a feeling that the poster is old as sin and they will have been edited since. nothing looks great when all the colours have been over saturated to stand out on a poster
Those toys are a bit crappy because they are cheap sculpts/casts for kids, and are not a good source of judgement. You can tell the paint apps are lazy, they are unfinished, and although the finals won't be much better, its still not a great representation. who knows, if the film is a success we may get high end "collector" versions.
Nostrils make sense, it may not be what you want, but not only are noses a great source of expression we really have no idea how these things will look when in motion. Taking a stylised cartoon and making a "real world" analog is impossible, especially when the current ninja turtle cartoon is very stylised. If you set a film in our reality, it makes sense to try and create something that could exist. So yeah, I am behind the designs.
I say give the film a chance. don't waste hours of your life being angry about this stuff, you can sh11t all over it when you've seen it.

The funniest thing to me on the "negative" side, is the fuss about the nostrils.
Really? Donnie has a proton pack and taped-up Buddy Holly specs, but the little nose slits bug you more? Raphael kind of looks like a shrunken Godzilla 1998 wearing a doo-rag, but the nostrils are the biggest design flaw?
It's an interesting obsession is what I'm getting at. There's so much more that's actually worth whining about.

Although, both Raph and Mikey have full on primate-like noses and not nose slits like Leo and Don as turtles do have.
I hope that's toned down in final product, but seeing the 12 inch Raph and Mikey action figures, I think they are staying.

Don't most actors have a face time requirement in their contract, like so many superhero movies the hero loses his mask so we can see the actors face. Maybe it's something like that, although. I see very little of the actors in the turtles faces.

No, I'm trashing them because I genuinely hate the design. I do seriously question whether the people at the helm have the slightest shred (no pun intended) of a clue about the turtles, but I'm not a fan of the designs because I'm not a fan of the designs.
That said, I know Kevin Eastman played at least a slight role. I'd be interested to know how much he was involved. He certainly seems to be more interested in taking creative risks than Peter Laird was. I hope, in the end, the risk pays off. Personally, I'm not feeling this movie at all.

Yep, that's how I'm looking at the movie: a totally different turtle-verse. I think that, in order to go into it with an open mind, that's really the only way you can do it. Much like how I treated the Spider-Man movies (hated with a passion), X-Men (liked the first two, not a big fan of the rest), Transformers (I liked Beast Wars as a kid, so I guess I can't have much of an opinion there), and Planet of the Apes (REALLY had to look at that as another artist's take, but it was delicious!).
Ya'll can laugh at me if you want, but I feel the different 'verses need to be treated the same way as if we ran into ourselves from a different 'verse: with compassion and understanding that different events bring about different traits in the same being.

Have you seen that vid someone posted on here pertaining to a first look at the movie. I think the voicework was alright. I just gotta get used to the boys wearing clothes. The kids will probably flock to see this thing. It's Turtles, and the franchise is extremely popular among that particular demographic so I imagine it'll have a reasonably successful run. Wish they'd open it earlier than August 8th. It's sort of depressing to think about this thing being a back to school to prove to daddy that one isn't a fool movie. Apologies for the Billy Madison reference, but that's what August always reminds me of. haha

On a side note, I do think the designs are all we could have expected. The designer, while having possibly one of the more coveted design jobs at the moment (given the opportunity to re-imagine the TMNT, a job loads of artists wanted), I think did a good job of bridging all expectations. I can't imagine it was easy, or even fun, to have the responsibility of pleasing so many different people in one go.
I'll stand by my earlier statement, that it does look like a hodgepodge, and design by committee, but with Nick sales doing 500 mil in it's first year, the franchise having 25 years of variations, the film being a summer tentpole, with two years of bad press...
I think, while it's really not my cup of tea, the fact that even here, there are more good than bad votes is an accomplishment.

Sure, the entire business model of Hollywood is to make changes for a whole host of reasons, primarily to do with copyright and trademark law, and claims to ownership. It was for these reasons that MOS was changed to have no red underwear, and the s shield was changed etc etc...
It's ownership over parts of the character that were held up in court as WB battled the Shuster/Siegel estates claim to the character.

that's how I'm coming at as well. just one of the many different worlds that make up the turtleverse. even though right now it doesn't appeal to me I've got no problem with it as its own alternate universe as long as that's what it stays. the problem is that if franchise movies make a good return corporate execs tend to mandate that other versions of the franchise copy from it to try to pull in the general audience who saw the movie. that's what i'm afraid of. as long as idw and the nick show get to keep doing their own thing i'm good
Probably the best, most sensible and intelligent post in this thread. Someone who is a hardcore fan, but is sensible enough to the overall essence of the franchise. Understanding re-invention, adaptation for a property to remain relevant or fresh.
These guys had to separate their vision from what came before, at least aesthetically. As a brand it makes sense. And the changes anyway aren't ridiculous enough to warrant such hate.
All the turtles have now is more defining physical characteristics, as well as personalized accessories or clothes. Big deal. Why are rivers being cried over this?
"They look like frogs"
"They look like 1998 Godzilla"
"OMG teh nostrils"
"He looks like Gollum"
All this bitching or moaning for no reason. Even if you'd consider them over designed, they're clearly 2014 version of Teenage MUTANT Ninja Turtles. did really HAVE to. was this really necessary to grab peoples attention. its not like the franchise was dead and they're trying to resurrect it. the animated series is already popular. I work in retail and the turtle action figures sold out incredibly fast this Christmas. faster than any other action figure. that says a lot toward already having kids attention. the on going comic series is also doing great. so that's 2 separate versions with more or less "traditional" designs succeeding at the same time. why is there such a need to reinvent what's working right now
They'd look like giant mutant turtles. Just without the ninja part. Which any version would look like without their weapons or bandanas. Make sense dude ...
By 2014 version, I meant the propensity for re-invention for long time properties to modernize them, or in some cases over design them to get a point across. A lack of subtlety or nuance. Which is the only things these designs could be considered guilty of honestly.
They are clearly, identifiably ninja turtles. That's not excuse making, that's just the blatantly obvious. Insinuating otherwise is overcompensation for a personal disdain for the overdesigned, contemporary twists to these designs.
they look like mutant turtles I give you that but I don't see much ninja. hell if the gear they had was more like the dark leo suit from idw I think I might be onboard with this. you know just them having pouches and pockets for ninja stars and smoke bombs. dark colors to help them blend into the shadows armor that would actually protect them from attacks that kind of stuff. a lot of people call this a modernized take but I don't see it. what they did to mikey throws that out the window on its own. the guylooks more 90's than a saved by the bell episode. he reminds me of an action figure I had of a rapper version of him minus the four fingered ring and clock chain. :tlol:

No, there is a purpose for the change. You didn't pick up what I was saying.
As a brand, or re-boot of the same old story but in a new franchise package it makes total sense to distinguish the looks between the live action franchise of the 90's and the one for 2014. It makes sense from a business or marketing perspective.
Why didn't the Nolan Dark Knight trilogy just use the '89 suit because it worked so well on screen? It should've used it because if it isn't broke, don't fix it right?
What they did made perfect sense.
Brandon Routh's Superman, as well as that entire movie was a cluster fukk disaster that didn't know what it wanted to be. It was a loose sequel to the Donner movies, same continuity, but different look aesthetically. It's why audiences were so polarized about it. A sequel to movie that came out in '81, in 2006 for a contemporary audience? Dumb.
Man of Steel however? Total re-invention, changes for re-branding to fit a new adapted vision but still identifiably Superman. Changes to the X-Men? Their comic costumes from the comics would look cheesy as hell in live action.
As an example, see the literal translation of Captain America's costume in Avengers. Looked like a cheap Halloween costume.
in these cases though change was either needed or very minor. the 89 batsuit
and all the ones up the begins really were broke in way as it was heavy rubber that prevented the actor from even turning his head. so updating that to make it more comfortable was more than necessary.
problems with the concept of superman returns aside the only real change in the costume was the material used the and the S belt buckle.
same thing with man of steel. it's the traditional suit with out the red trunks and yellow belt. its not reinventing the wheel supes just doesn't wear his underwear on the outside anymore.
I didn't have much of a problem with the xmen wearing black not because their usual costumes would look cheesy but because it makes sense with the being a team. everybody wearing different colors with different designs and varying styles would probably look weird when standing next to each other. which kind of reminds me of something now that I think about it:twink:

Count me in the "meh" group.....def things that are pretty good and horrible at the same time.

Just going thru all these movie based threads I have to make an observation.
I love how the people defending these new looks for the turtles are bashing those that hate them and vice versa.
There is no 'even ground'. You either love it or hate it, but you can't be basically neutral.
However, if you love them, you're told you basically have no taste and aren't a true TMNT fan.
If you hate them, you're told you're too much of a nostalgia nerd (nicer way of saying it), or just hate Michael Bay and everything he touches.
People on both sides have presented good arguments for why they love or hate the designs and yet some seem to want to rile up the masses by claiming the same excuses mentioned above over and over again.
If someone loves the new movie looks, so be it. Same goes for those that hate it.
If you're indifferent to them, that should be fine as well.
Just some thoughts of mine.

I forgot to mention. I think part of the reason they think they could get away with this is because of the new Nick Toon designs. Remember when the new show's designs were revealed, people were up in arms over them? When the show finally debut, people loved the show, and the designs grew on them. I mean, I still hate the gap in Donny's teeth, but the quality of the show lets me overlook it for the most part.
They think their movie is so awesome that when people finally see it, they'll love it so much and ignore the bad designs. Which is probably NOT going to happen. This movie will suck the big one.

People only hated the Nick designs because we were shown early CG footage that wasn't finalized and looked like an early PS2 game at first.
Obviously that was beta footage as the designs looked much better.

That may be true, to a point TerranigmaFreak, but the re-designs for the Nick show are nowhere near as drastic as the movie's.

You forgot the finalized designs and the outcry from the general public. The leaked designs had backlash here, but the big noise was made when the finalized designs came out.

in these cases though change was either needed or very minor. the 89 batsuit
and all the ones up the begins really were broke in way as it was heavy rubber that prevented the actor from even turning his head. so updating that to make it more comfortable was more than necessary.
problems with the concept of superman returns aside the only real change in the costume was the material used the and the S belt buckle.
same thing with man of steel. it's the traditional suit with out the red trunks and yellow belt. its not reinventing the wheel supes just doesn't wear his underwear on the outside anymore.
I didn't have much of a problem with the xmen wearing black not because their usual costumes would look cheesy but because it makes sense with the being a team. everybody wearing different colors with different designs and varying styles would probably look weird when standing next to each other. which kind of reminds me of something now that I think about it:twink:
I agree with the batman and superman part. They continue to change and evolve in the comics they come from. It's been years since batman wore the yellow oval except for his short stint in batman inc before the reboot... So why would Nolan use the old outdated design? Superman also stopped wearing the red tights after the reboot so why not use it in the modern movie? At least the suit wasn't armor used like in the comics.
The turtles have always looked relatively the same in popular media. The only major change recently has been those bandage wraps they added. The movie went overboard with new designs. They're not that bad but they look better on a DA pic than in the movie. Plus mikey is the only one dressed in casual clothes had can chill in. The others just look too silly if they're gonna wear that all the tine. And if that is their 'suit up' look can someone tell mikey that surfer gear isn't exactly armor?

Casuals count too. And calling Youtubers 'scum' seem kinda too far.

I'm talking about the people who talk about how horrible the Nick Turtles look with literally the dumbest reasons I've ever seen.

People can be entitled to their opinion... besides their voices are so insignificant they can't really do anything to the show, so who cares what they think?

I personally don't care for them. Especially Mikey's weird shorts? Also their lips kinda freak me out. But all in all it could be worse.
