View Full Version : Old Instagram photo reveals info about The Foot

I found an old behind the scenes Instagram photo from a Foot Soldier actor. The photo is unremarkable, but what he says in the comments reveals a little bit about this version of the Foot Clan, and maybe Shredder. I would consider it a minor spoiler.

tommywalker24
This is me in a Foot Soldier/Marine style costume, ultimately not used for my character, but still pretty bad ass!

rachelallend
What are you playing in the movie!!

tommywalker24
Hey Rachel! Actually in the movie I play a ninja foot soldier who has to kill himself in front of the Shredder. in a traditional gi, not this military gear ultimately

If this actually happens in the movie and isn't cut completely, it'll probably be off-screen.

Keep it at the PG/PG-13 rating.

I really get tired of all the paramilitary crap that is being used in films today. However, some of it does look nice. Im not someone who expects that ninjas will still dress traditionally when they go out and do what they do, but another PMC style thing! At least they could have gotten rid of the bandanna thingy(i forget the name of them, so do forgive me), it really cheapens the effect.
All in all though this is an interesting insight, and the idea of traditional ritual suicide is very intriguing.

chrisdude

PG13 is the biggest audience, save a few "classic" family films. All the superhero movies are PG13. I can't imagine them landing anywhere else, if this movie has any kind of serious budget.

It's not a Michael Bay movie until he's able to jizz over the very concept of the military.

You should see the Foot Ninjas in their full movie costumes.

Ridiculous.

Oh I expect either a PG movie with some "intense" scenes or a PG-13 with your usual Transformers type fair.

Big, over the top action and humor only 13 year olds would find funny.

Peeing robots, racial stereotype jokes, and giant robot testicles. Similar to that.

PG13 (or 12 in the UK) is now the standard. It’s the rating that studios actually want for their big budget tentpoles nowadays. PG rated big budget films (100 million dollars or more) are a dying breed. I expect TMNT will be given a PG13/12 rating.

Paramilitary, or mercenaries are a very zeitgeist caliber subplot. What with fears over companies like Blackwater, etc. I get why it's in a lot of movies.

For example how under Bane's rule his version of the LOS was more mercenary with sharp shooting military types than it was ninja assassins like it was under Ra's Al Ghul.

Sounds like they're ninja foot, but they also have mercenary soldiers as well under the Shredder's control. That's actually pretty damn cool in my book. Look forward to hearing more.

The '87 cartoon were ninja robots. Not soldier robots. So it had that going for it at least.

Where did you get that we're getting two different sets of Foot Clan members?

If this IS true, and it IS in the movie, and Fichtner aka Eric Sachs does order it and it's done in front of him...

We're actually going to have a weeaboo Shredder in a TMNT movie.

I wonder how this all works. Fitchner makes it sound like Eric Sachs changes into Shredder. That had me believing that Karai was in charge of The Foot before that happened. But this actor makes it sound like Shredder really is the leader of The Foot. Fitchner has also said this Shredder is unlike any other telling. (Not that I expect him to know all tellings of Shredder.) So, at this point, I'm starting to wonder if this really will end up a reincarnation deal like IDW. Or, as some suspected, Eric is adopted...

If that scene was recorded it at least sounds like the movie might not be as void in the actual ninja department as we think.

Of course even if it was there was a scene like that filmed it's no guarantee it will make it in. A similar scene with Shredder beating two Foot Ninja that had been arrested and had to be bailed was cut and the Tatsu killing one of them for failing was altered in the edit to show the guy was still alove.

I wonder how this all works. Fitchner makes it sound like Eric Sachs changes into Shredder. That had me believing that Karai was in charge of The Foot before that happened. Given all this talk of decoys ala Batman Begins and Iron Man 3 it's possible Sachs is the brains behind the Foot but has a decoy that wears the Shredder armor to be the "face" of the Foot until something happens to gives Sachs the ability and the means to step up and take on the mantle himself.

God I'm getting sick of that twist.

Gave it a pass in Begins because Liam Neeson made a fantastic Al Ghul.

But after seeing Ben Kingsley's Mandarin and being BLOWN AWAY by it, all for The Mandarin to actually be a rich white guy with douchey dragon tattoos really pissed me off.

It's not clever, it's not groundbreaking or shocking. It's hackneyed.

But isn't the reincarnation of Oroku Saki in the IDW series a Japanese man in modern day? I'm not reading it currently because I can't afford comics right now.

IDW Shredder was reincarnated back in the feudal period, he was put in a sleep and woke up in modern days, so therefore he still have his Oroku Saki body in modern times while the turtles and splinter do not have their human bodies.

Agreed. One key to remember is you can get away with a lot more in a PG-13 movie now than you used to.

The Wolverine is PG-13 and yet Logan stabs people, has their blood on his claws, gets shot, stabbed, etc.

The 1990 TMNT was rated PG and the thing that has always irked me about it most was that Leo was never able to actually use his weapons directly.

They can make a solid film at PG-13 as far as tone and content goes that's faithful to the original comics but still light enough for parents who grew up with the turtles to take their kiddos.

I'm not saying what i said is fact I'm making an educated guess based on reality and frankly my theories are just as if not more plausible then your theories which are based on being overly bias against anything this movie mighty be regardless of what it might offer or could possibly be. Nick furry was commonly known by the general public as a white guy until Sam Jackson now he is commonly known as an African American. It shouldn't matter race if the actor can portray the character correctly. And William hasn't disproven himself as an actor thus could be the best version of shredder we have ever seen but i will judge whether or not this is true by seeing his performance not judging him based of his race regardless of what racer the character is normally depicted as.

It doesn't matter that Marvel is portraying Nick Fury as black because there's no shortage of white characters for white actors to play in big budget movies.

It DOES matter that a character that has been traditionally Japanese in nearly if not all media has now been racebent and is being played by a white guy.

So what if his portrayal of shredder is the best we have ever seen. That's what most are worried about. Regardless of race. Its that they want the best version he can be. And while part of his character is race that's not the most important part. It how he acts and his relationship to the turtles. If he happens to have a back story about being adopted or his patents had a love affair, then fine but that's not the only part of his character and what if they cast an Asian in the role as schradder would it mater he was Asian? No

I just think to say the actor sucks only based on the color of his skin is just as racist as "white washing" for any race. ho is to say they didn't try casting for people of Asian descent but in turn didn't find anyone maybe does to scheduling conflicts or any number of reason truth is we don't know but I'm not going to condemn him till i see his performance

That maybe so, but why did they have to go with him as Shredder? Shredder has, is, and always should be Oroku Saki, not "Eric Sachs". To change both his race and name is just pointless. We do not know whether or not he doesn't use Oroku Saki. There are rumors about him being adopted and having his brother which he had in the comics and there is no evidence that it's fake. tr.v. bas·tard·ized, bas·tard·iz·ing, bas·tard·iz·es
1. To lower in quality or character; debase. And You KNOW for a FACT this "Lowers" the quality of this movie with out even seeing it im glade to know your physic.

Making Shredder, Japanese man whose real name is Oroku Saki, into a white guy named Eric Sachs is a bastardization of Shredder. You dont even know if Eric Sachs is just an Alias. this has not been proven. Fichtner has even said shredder goes through changes Maybe he grows up as a child of a Japanese family or maybe he is reincarnated as an American. we just DO NOT KNOW.

Is William Fichtner related to you or something? Like, your cousin or your uncle? Because dear god, I can't think of any other reason why you'd be so perturbed by anything I have to say regarding him, even though I've LITERALLY NEVER SAID HE'S A WASHED UP HAS BEEN.

If you're going to start just making **** up, I can't really see what the point of even bothering with you is.

I'm not related to Him i just think your accusation of him being terrible Being old and being fat,
has–been
noun \ˈhaz-ˌbin, -ˌben, chiefly British -ˌbēn\

: a person who is no longer popular or successful
Which you may not have said but you've implied it.
also not being worthy of the character (DISREGARDING race) is what upsets me.

This could be a little too much, but based on what they've said I feel like there is gonna be the real Shredder (Oroku Saki) in Japan leading an American version of the foot with this Eric Sachs version as his American head. Which could explain black ops esq foot soldiers. And possibly the sequels could build upon the turtles facing up against Shredder at some point in the trilogy. I've seen that Minae Noji who is Asian is playing Karai in the film. Maybe Oroku Saki sends her to clean up the mess at one point in the film, revealing a bigger threat..
William Fichtner did say something along the lines of "anyone can become or accept the role of the Shredder"

Just a thought, I just really want this story to be good, and something like this I would be down with for sure and I've been playing the scenario of this in my head.

This is my first post on here, much love to fellow Turtle Fans! :tgrin:

I'd agree Chris, if Fichtner wasn't already contracted for the entire trilogy himself...

They aren't going to confuse the audience like that.

Race is not how characters are built.

The Shredder is a Japanese man, born & raised in Japan, who based his lifestyle on that of both the Samurai & Ninja simultaneously, adorning armor reminiscent of the Edo period, being a part of a clan, honoring death before dishonor, etc.

Totally not built around his race, though.

Just give up already. You aren't going to convince anyone to align themselves with your way of thinking. This is obvious, is it not?

The Nick Fury comparison is completely ******** on two accounts.

1. There is no shortage of white roles, making a white character into POC is inclusive and more diverse. Also gives POC actors a. Fair shake, since most characters either in movies or comics are usually male white by default.

2. The Marvel Cinematic Universe Nick Fury is based off Ultimate Comics Nick Fury who had his looks directly taken from the actor Samuel Jackson. And if Samuel Jackson wants to play that character, no one is stupid enough to say o to Samuel Jackson. Personally I loathe the Ultimate Comics Nick Fury, but luckily he got a more 616 universe personality so I'm glad he isn't Ultimate. Nick in characterization

The whole idea is that Eric Saches is a play on or Americanizing the name Oroku saki, something some one might do for an alias in America if they were from Japan. Just like my name is Adam but in Japan it would be Adamu son. Simple concept many can't grasp

I'm well aware that Eric Sachs is a play on Oroku Saki, doesn't make it any less stupid and ridiculous.

Especially when the name is wrong. Eric Sachs don't fit Oroku Saki, cause Eric is a first name and Oroku is a surname. The western order of Saki's name is Saki Oroku, cause Oroku is his Surname. In other words a western play on his name, a "alias" if you will, would be a play on Saki Oroku, not Oroku Saki.

You could argue that Eric Sachs uses Oroku Saki as an alias for a Japanese bank account.

No. I know for a fact that it lowers the quality of Shredder as a character WHICH IS WHAT I ACTUALLY SAID.

JESUS.

No I didn't. Not even implied.

And yes, he's not worthy of the character.

Exactly.

THIS is the Shredder we're getting for this movie and maybe for future sequels.

Blah.

If this movie does turn out to be sh*t, seeing all the apologists do verbal somersaults is going to be the most entertaining thing about the entire project. "I only said it COULD be good!!!"

Nah, c'mon, guy, Deductive Reasoning is a thing. All evidence points to some pretty stupid sh*t hitting the screen. We're not Bad People for going by what we've been given, all of which looks like a metric ass-load of sh*t with a TMNT ribbon on it.

Apparently, those four letters, to some fans, can justify anything, just to keep the brand alive. Not true, says I. But yeah, the "Constantly Negative" crowd aren't working half as hard to "convince" people as the "Let's Try And Be Positive" crowd. And that's kind of annoying. Because in this case the Optimists are the ones doing all the persecuting, and that's not how this kind of thing is supposed to work. Stop playing against type, people.

And for what it's worth, my only problem with a lot of the New People we've gotten lately is that they often try and plead their case by means of atrocious spelling and grammar. Not all of the new members, obviously, but man, it doesn't help them make whatever point they're attempting to make. Call it "Elitist", but when you're trying to make an impression while trying to promote a POV some or many don't agree with, you shouldn't give them any ammo whatsoever. Jeeeeest sayin'.

Seriously. I guarantee you go back to before Fichtner was cast, and bring up his name in regards to him playing Shredder and you'd get flamed right off the boards.

But now that it's officially happening, we're somehow in "let's wait and see/I think he's gonna nail it!" territory.

I think it's stockholm syndrome.

I agree that we don't have anything that excites me so far but We havnt seen anything yet! Too many times have preconceived notions been made based on castings photos and trailers and the movie was the complete opposite... Heath ledger as joker... Tumbler... Met with huge negativity and were awesome... Spider-Man 3 had huge hype with it... The venom trailer got a ton of people excited for a huge letdown

I'm sorry, I'm not some eternal optimist but some stills from the set, photos of action figures and a poster that looked way too cgi to actually look that way on the screen is not enough for me to want to storm the studios... We don't know what anything will look like especially since many thing we saw will likely be cgi enhanced... Once we get a trailer we will have a better idea of how things look and the tone of the movie... It's your right to voice you displeasure of whaT we've seen but to attack people who are holding back their opinion or still have hope for the movie is just kind of silly at this point.

Maybe the "Let's be Positive" crowd forgot how the Shredder was written in the leaked script. We now know that they've reworked the script, but there are still elements present in what we know about the movie. (Snowy mountain chase scene, militaristic foot, and a Shredder who isn't Oroku Saki, etc.)

You know the real disappointing thing, I haven't seen no one post? This is made with a sequel in mind and if it doesn't break even at least. The movie will be riddled with Plot Holes and open ended story telling.

While I cannot defend their casting of Fitchner as Eric Sach's (and you truly can't because Shredder is and should be Japanese), I don't think we should be dwelling on the fact that a Caucasian man will be playing the character, and that the character (presumably depending upon his backstory) will be Caucasian.

There's no point in continuing to bitch about the fact that they are doing this because its already done. There's nothing we can do to change it. You don't have to like it, but you have to accept it and then do the logical thing. Which is just stop caring, get with your life and don't see this film.

Or, instead, we could be focusing on figuring out, speculating, and stating our opinions on how this can work, at least in its own way. And at least, still be respectful to the core of the character, and the elements BEYOND his race.

It's not and can never be perfect due to the race change, but that doesn't mean it can't be good.

At the very least, this could be a very different, yet very good, element in a new take on TMNT. And there are TONS of takes on TMNT.

Fichtner would have been perfect as a mob guy or a dirty cop/FBI agent working for Shredder. He could have been a less cartoony proportionate Hun.
