Would be nice if there some kind of origin story that explain Donnie's interest?

This thread is wierd , but I think that he got interested for doing machines by reading books, and by seen things on tv, or even by himself, and than just thought " Hey, I can do this as well, maybe if put a rocket launcher on this toy, it will be able to destroy mikey's comic book colection" or anything like that.

Because Raphael is cool, but crude.

This thread is very casual.

It doesn't get much more complicated than the group needing a smart character who can build things and explain all the weird sci-fi stuff going on in the TMNT universe.

Every franchise has a "smart" character.

You're a parody of yourself, I swear.

I like this theory.

Do you think it might have started when he start asking questions on what he is and when he couldn't get answers he wanted, he try to find the answers through science?

Things like this are why I've often said the OT should get a revival series, be it animated or as a spinoff comic via IDW. There's lots of fun stuff that could be made sense of, delved into deeper, etc.

Because Don doesn't want to be alone.

Not sure what being alone has to do with his interest in science and machinery, but.... Maybe he is planning to build himself the "perfect girlfriend"? (A la "My Science Project", LOL!!)

Oh yes, of course, almost forgot. ALSO, Leonardo leads, so I guess there's just nothing else left for Donatello to do.

I guess living your life in a sewer would get pretty boring and lonely so taking up mechanics prob, Dons way of keeping himself occupied.

Because somebody has to. They cannot hire anyone else; they spend all their funds on pizza.

I feel the color purple kinda reflect intellect and knowledge.

It's actually a fun question. I sometimes wonder if Eastman and Laird ever meant for Don to be the token "smart one ". Our first look into Donnie's smarts is in issue 2 of the original comics. April is scrambling to shut down the attacking mousers, and using Stockman's computer system to do so. Don volunteers to help, stating he's "good with computers." And things got progressively more complex for him from there.

I'm good with computers too, but That doesn't make me a crazy smart scientist. So, I wonder if Pete and Kev used the line, because someone needed to help April, and from there thought, "hmm, this could work for Donatello..."

He started as "good with computers," evolved into to the one who "does machines" and now he's trying to figure out how to de-mutate Timothy. He's gone a long way, our Donnie-boy.

It's a joke, Duckie. Donatello "does" machines as in having sexual relations with them. At first that's what I thought the OP meant in a joking way.

Because the TMNT are a team, based on different characters with different personalities. Think it begun when he fixes the shower in an early Mirage issue (the one with Kirby's strange crystal).

Why is a mechanic good with cars? It's just what he does. There's no big mystery behind it. It just is what it is.

Not to mention that the first time we see Don in #2 he's soldering a circuit board. In fact, that opening splash gives us a good idea of each turtle rather well - Don's working on something techy, Leo's reading "Dune" whilst chastising his brothers, Raph's agressively attacking Mike, who in turn is just... kinda there (he was the least fleshed-out of the 4 in those early issues, at least until his micro-series).

It's also quite handy to have an engineer and IT guy around when you're living in a sewer which initially had no clean water or electricity supply and you're cut off from the goings on of the outside world.

Kind of surprising the tales comic never did a story on how their personalities developed
