View Full Version : WHY IS IT CALLED TMHT IN ENGLAND?

PWDESAI

That is so gay (no offense to any gay people), why would they call the ninja turtles hero turtles? It makes no sense... I can't stand it, on there toys it would be called that too, when it really should be tmnt not tmht. Why do they call it hero turtles? Are they afraid of ninjas over there?

If you mean no offense to gay people, then please don't associate the word "gay" with something you feel is absurd. People might get offended anyway.

As for the "hero turtles," I believe that the execs (or whoever was in charge with bringing the TMNT over) thought the word "ninja" was too violent to use. They also censored a lot of scenes with Mikey and his nunchucks.

Kingkapong

ya. they carried some of the TMHT in Canada. i thought it was stupid (well, most tmnt fans did) so they changed it back to tmnt in Canada (American influences!!)

While sex is pretty open in England, violence is a lot more censored. So they cut out scenes where TMNT used their weapons (the first movie was just butchered), and changed the name from Ninja to Turtle. Pretty dumb if you ask me.

... bearing in mind it was the BBC censors that did it... Not the UK public...

Most people over here think it's pretty stupid too. Especially as a year or two previously we had Panthro in Thundercats who wasn't censored, and we could also buy these plastic ninja kits in the mini markets with plastic shuriken etc in them.

They edited the turtles in the UK? how the hell did that happen?! the movies were only rated PG, for goodness sake! it's fun for the whole family! (except for my sister, my brother and my parents. so i guess it's fun for... well... me.)

Kali

*shrugs* Different countries have different standards. That's obvious when I watch imported shows like Whose Line (comparing the UK and US versions), Absolutely Fabulous, and Red Dwarf.

*squeals* Oh, Kali!!!! You watch Red Dwarf too?!? I LOVE that show! (but I haven't gotten to watch it in a while -- it was coming on every night on PBS, but i guess they didn't get enough funding the last time 'round... *sai*)

Tinselcat
06-13-2002, 10:01 AM
i heard that red dwarf was really cool, but i've never seen it.

Kali
06-13-2002, 10:22 AM
It's a great comedy sci-fi show. Unfortunately I don't get to watch it that often. I keep forgetting it's on!

Loolaa
06-13-2002, 11:42 AM
What's the American version of Red Dwarf like compared to the UK version?

... I didn't know you had your own version of Absolutely Fabulous either...! Wierd!

Kali
06-13-2002, 11:47 AM
Actually, they're the same shows. Sorry if I confused you. Only Whose Line has a real American "version", with a new host and all, like they did with Who Wants to be a Millionaire and Weakest Link. Red Dwarf and Ab Fab are imported as is. And I prefer it that way!

Loolaa
06-13-2002, 11:51 AM
Oh. There's me getting all confused again..
I heard somewhere that the US has it's own version of Red Dwarf though.

Kali
06-13-2002, 12:12 PM
Hmm, maybe, but if it does, I've never seen it.

SeaThreePeeO

Well, If we are all going to be picky about things, then please explain to me why it is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone over here in the UK. Yet the USA deemed fit to change the name to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Now if you were to get a dictionary and look the two words up, you'd find that they both have two completely different meanings.

Loolaa
06-13-2002, 01:35 PM
I've often wondered about that myself.

Kali
06-13-2002, 01:44 PM
I think I heard about that. It should be the Philosopher's Stone, since that's the stone from legend that turns base metals to gold and creates the Elixir of Life. I think they may have changed it because "Philosopher" has another definition on it's own, and they didn't want to confuse it.

Parents were in an uproar about Harry Potter because they thought it would teach kids "magic", and turn them anti-Christian.

Samantha
06-13-2002, 01:46 PM
Very good question. :???:

Skeletoncrew
06-13-2002, 01:49 PM
They figured that americans were too stupid to know what the Philosopher's Stone is. At least, that's my theory.

Loolaa
06-13-2002, 01:51 PM
But it was the American publishers that chose to call it the Sorcerers Stone.... :???:

Kali
06-13-2002, 01:52 PM
They didn't want kids to think Philosophers practiced magic, or something like that.

Skeletoncrew
06-13-2002, 01:57 PM
Hmmmm...now that you mention it, I wonder why the alchemists called it the Philosopher's stone?

(I thought they just figured we wouldn't know what a philosopher is! )

Loolaa
06-13-2002, 02:00 PM
*looks around and whispers cautiously*

Who's 'they'...?

Kali
06-13-2002, 02:07 PM
A philosopher is, literally, a "lover of knowledge". (And I thought those Latin root lessons were pointless.) They were early scientists and alchemists. They claimed they could make the stone (although it was never proved they could) so it was named the "Philosopher's stone".

And that ends the lesson for today.

Loolaa
06-13-2002, 02:13 PM
No! I know what a philosopher is!! I just wondered who the "they" was you and SC were referring to!

Kali
06-13-2002, 02:19 PM
I know, I was answering whoever asked WHY they called it the Philosopher's stone!

As for "they", I'm not sure exactly. Some stick-up-the-butt group we have censoring things over here.

Samantha
06-13-2002, 02:30 PM
Down with "they"!

SeaThreePeeO
06-13-2002, 02:32 PM
Hmm Maybe it is the same stick-up-the-butt group that likes to censor things over here.

Now there's a plan for world domination!

Kingkapong
06-13-2002, 03:25 PM
down with censorship!! Other eurpean countrie's standards are much lower than in north america. for instance, italy has lower standards. i hate censorship cause (well, in Canada, censorship sort of follow's U.K's) they censored blood from most of the anime shows (dbz, gundam)and we have this stupid age rating thing implanted in all tvs. they are quite leanient on some stuff, depending on the time.

Samantha
06-13-2002, 05:55 PM
What I really hate in this country is when they put on a obviously R rated movie at 11:30 PM (something tells me not many three year olds will be watching) and then censor out the curse words and violence!!

PWDESAI
06-13-2002, 08:32 PM
yeah that is pretty stupid, but maybe it depends on the channel you're watching. Otherwise, who knows who cares...
Paul

Kingkapong
06-14-2002, 06:11 AM
ya. sometimes, the stupid V-chip (rating chip) had a rating for children 8 and up on some shows on at 12. it had a lot of violence, blood and stuff like that.

PWDESAI
06-14-2002, 09:53 PM
you know what would rock? An R rated tmnt movie. They could actually slice the foot soldiers, and could have killed shredder, and could swear all time...wait who needs R it already happened at PG!
JK
Paul
I wish they would have done more foot bashing in the cartoon though

Samantha
06-15-2002, 01:06 AM
If only they could do something like that. Sadly we'll be very lucky if we get a movie like TMNT 1. *sad sai*

HorseTechie

Or. *smack*smack* Have a TMNT movie with REAL wicked martial arts action that you have to put into slo-mo to follow it all.

SeaThreePeeO

Speaking of real wicked martial arts moves you have to slow mo. I like the gravity defying stunts in most of Jet Li's movies.

The ones where you know that they are not possible, but you have to have a second look anyway

Tinselcat
06-15-2002, 03:13 PM
i've never seen any of jet li's movies, but i'm a huuuuuuge fan of jackie chan! i think, if he were to go up against jean claude van damme, or stephen segal, he could whup both their asses and they'd just be reddish smears on the wall... *has devilish thoughts about jackie chan beating up the self-absorbed wannabes*

Kingkapong
06-15-2002, 05:53 PM
ya. jakie chan is awesome but he his not really a martial artist. he's more of a stunt person

Tinselcat
06-15-2002, 06:30 PM
not... really... a martial... artist... i gotta leave before i start sputtering in indgination... *sputters in indignation*

Kali
06-15-2002, 06:42 PM
Jackie Chan IS a martial artist. Just because he does a lot of movie stunt work (a lot of which is martial arts) doesn't take away from that.

Tinselcat
06-16-2002, 07:10 AM
AMEN, SISTER!

HorseTechie
06-17-2002, 10:22 AM
True... *steps up as a martial artist purest* but Jet Li uses more martial arts action in his movies. Jackie Chan is more like a slap-stick style and not very serious.

Jet Li is starring in more movies like that too though (or just ones with special effects and piano wires).

But Li's earlier Chinese flicks were to die for. All 100 percent martial arts, no effects or stunt doubles. Same for Cho Yun Fat's style too. Mmmm...

They tried to make one a long time ago, but it didn't survive. And it was really wierd, anyway -- I think the Cat was a woman!
