Edit: Disclaimer: Don't take this seriously. Also, 4 levels of fans, just as we have 4 turtles.
There seems to be these levels:
1. Causal fan: Fan of the turtles. Remembers the 1980s cartoon and maybe the 2003 cartoon. Has not really thought about the turtles in awhile. Looks forward to the movie, because hey it is a new turtles movie!
2. Passionate turtle fan: All things turtles are just cool. A little nervous about the new movie. Has fond memories of the old movies and cartoons. Watches the new Nickelodeon series. Collects a few or many of the action figures.
3. Borderline turtle-path: Thinks about the turtles almost all the time. Really disappointed with what has been read about the new movie.
4. Full-on turtle rage: Oh my gosh, what the *$#%!? Alien turtles with lips?! And what is Megan Fox doing in MY turtle movie?! For real?! Oh man, Ninja Turtles, excuse me, it is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is a way of life, and I'm going to be a real %^&$ head to anyone who holds a different opinion than me, and take things way too seriously to the point that it is no longer being a fan, it is having a mental disorder and an obsession.
I'm in #3, Borderline turtle-path. I think about the turtles a lot and look forward to the movie, but I am concerned it will possibly be like Transformers, a movie I do NOT like!

IM pretty much in-between 2 and 3 while i have to say there are tones of things going through my mind turtle happens to be one but i cant say i think about then all the time in the past this was the case and i have always loved the turtles in every version for what they were, DO i like other more then some yes. For the longest time i love tmnt 3 Because i love Medieval Japan so seeing samurai and stuff like that was just awesome looking back people are right the costumes aren't as good but i still hold that movie close to my heart. Same goes for the Out of their shells I have so much nostalgia for that, back when i was a kid it was that that convinced be the turtles were real i believed it with all of my being. But i hold just about anything turtles with a bit of respect.
I find it so funny all the since of entitlement Fans hold these days, I guess i just remember times when you could complain and miss the movie or just shut up and watch the movie based on the thing you loved even if it wasn't what you had originally hope. All the distaste and anger over things isn't good for people, chill out relax and just go with it. If its terrible you're really not effected by it. Do terrible movies really effect there franchises NO, just let it go and chill.

Some interesting replies. Thanks for entertaining the thoughts on this topic, or something like that. :tcool: I have been a turtles fan since the late 1980s. I have followed the cartoons, movies, and the toy lines. The only turtles related incarnations that I haven't followed are the comic books, live action Next Mutation series, and those concert type events. My favorite turtles is the 2003 era cartoon, followed by the 1980s cartoon as my second favorite. All are great though.

2007 was irrelevant.
Did better than expected first week. Opened in a few more theaters for the second and dropped immediately.
Basically showed that the franchise is marketable, but unrealistically able to perform with an average film budget.

Just an example. Add to that, that this could be a great movie and if it is all the more better.

I don't think I'm any of these levels. I love the Turtles in general (Raphael is my favorite fictional character of all time) but there are some incarnations I love and others that were meh to me. And, there is this situation, while 2k3 is probably my favorite of the toons, I still hated Fast Forward. I'm not a particular fan of the original comics (but I do respect the stories) but I can get lost for hours in a well written fanfiction.

This makes no sense, I thought we were talking about what appeals to the casuals and what not, and casual movie goers are not going to give a sh!t about if it's closely adapted to the comic book or not. It's a bit of a double edged sword. A movie can come out and be as faithful to the comic book as possible, but if the GA don't care for it, then the near theatrical future dies right there. But then, there is the time when the movie strays far from the adapted material (like Transformers, Man of Steel, even the Dark Knight to an extent) and the GA love it to death (much to the dismay of the hardcore comic fans who now have to suffer through movies not meant for them, but those who shell out the big bucks to fund these expensive movie projects). The movies that actually are faithful adaptations and loved by the GA are kind of rare. Heck, next to the Turtles, another story I love is the LOTR saga, but to be honest, I loved with what Peter Jackson has done with Legolas, even though he has strayed far from the source material.

If they're not going to give a ****, why NOT adapt it faithfully from source materials?
Why change things for the sake of changing them if the general audience isn't going to give a ****?

I guess I'm somewhere between a 2 and 3. There was a long stretch when I barely thought about them at all, but it was mostly due to being an adult and RL taking precedence over things like cartoons and other childhood loves. That, and for several years I was working on Saturdays and had no idea there even WAS a "new" cartoon- until it got to FF and I rediscovered it- only to be utterly confused and disappointed by the lackluster animation and characterization. I was indifferent, missed the TMNT CG movie completely, and it was only recently (within the last two years) that I rekindled my TMNT-mania. Now I'm back to hunting down everything I can reasonably get my hands on, and loving every bit of it!
But as a kid, I was borderline obsessed and tried to catch everything I could- even the newspaper comic strips! At least on Sundays when we actually GOT the paper they were in. I guess it was the movies and OT that I was really in love with back then, and what with one thing and another, I just lost track after high school. But now that I've returned to the fandom in general, and my former near-obsessive love, I ain't leaving any time soon! Whether the movie is good or not, I know I still have everything else to enjoy, especially the IDW and Nick stuff. Good or bad, the movie will not affect me other than to be disappointed if it doesn't ring true to the core of what I came to love about them in the first place.

It doesn't have to be the same thing over and over again. It can be a different story, but still keep... now hold on to your senses here, this might blow your mind.... the turtles looking like they've always had, foot ninjas that ARE foot ninjas, and a kick-ass shredder that doesn't need some kind of super suit to fight.
I admit Shredder does look awesome, and I know we're gonna completely forget about lame-ass Fitchner the moment he puts it on.... but that all goes out the window if he says something like 'ACTIVATE S.H.R.E.D.D.E.R BATTLE MODE' and we hear humming and all that.
Super kills it if he explains that he can't fight worth crap but with the 'S.H.R.E.D.D.E.R. battle exoskeleton' he can defeat any ninja master.

By the time BTTS came about things were slowing down for tmnt. With the movie coming out they probably wanted to focus on those figures instead.
Its different then what we have know the show is still going strong. So the attention of the franchise is greater then it was back during BTTS.

a bad movie never really has a negative effect on a brand. people who didn't care about it before just go right on not caring about it while the people who did keep right on reading the comics and watching the shows.its the movie being successful that makes the difference. like you said its the movie that gets the attention of people unaware of a franchise. if they like it they check out more if they don't they write it off. if the movie sucks the only thing lost will be a chance to pick up new fans. what we should be concerned about is the movie sucking for fans but being a hit with the general audience. if that happens crappy ideas from the movie can start to show up everywhere else to cater to people who liked it
But we already got that back in 1990. Aren't you tired of rehashing the same damn thing over and over and over again? I have seen the Raph Meets Casey Jones now in 4 different incarnations, and they are almost exactly the same damn way. being faithful to the source material doesn't necessarily have to mean do it the exact same way as before and making changes doesn't mean you need to reinvent the wheel. I think the most important thing when making an adaption especially with something that's been around for decades is realizing that its still around for a reason. sometimes its just as simple as looking at what worked and making sure it remains while making the necessary changes. 90% of batman begins came out of the comics with the rest being altered so it could fit in a 2 hour time frame. or for a more close to home example idw's tmnt comics are a faithful reinvention that managed to put their own spin on things while taking cues from 30 years of turtle history.

Crap is crap, for example if my favourite band puts out a crap album I'll say it's crap- craptastic even.
I'm not going to automatically like any old you know what just cause it has the TMNT or whatever on it...

Most of us aren't saying that. We're just saying to judge a CD, and in order to consider it craptastic, you have to at least have listened to the songs on the CD right? Same can be said for a movie. you cant judge it based of of blurry leaked photo, and expect to fully understand out they will act as Characters on the screen, and know how the story will play out?
I mean you can say you dont like the designs, or the toys, or what you've seen. That's your choice and freedom.
But judging the full film based off of just that it judging a cd based on Song titles and the cover on the jewel case.

I also don't think parents would want to take their kids to see this as its nothing like the Nick cartoon.

I'd definitely say I'm a 2 with little bit of 3. IDK, on one hand, I'd like to think that this film will some how overcome the criticism it's gotten, and that somehow turns out to be a good film.
But on the other hand, practically nothing from this film has given me hope it'll be good. From Fitcher being cast as Shredder, the Foot clan being turned into some kinda black ops group (With some very ugly masks they're wearing), and the Turtles designs ( I hate how Mikey turned out), the list just goes on and on.
Honestly, unless the trailer can convince me, I might just skip this and wait till it's on DVD.

Parents are going to be another story. I remember quite well, when the first Turtles movie came out, they all took their little kids to go see it and were shell shocked at how violent it was. I know I read somewhere that the parents pressured New Line to make a more kiddy friendly film and I guess due to the backlash from the parents, it's why the second movie is more corny and light hearted than the first movie was.
I'm curious in, are we going to get a PG film or a PG-13 film. With the director's and producer's track record, I'm assuming PG-13, but one can never tell.

As far as rating im sure it will be pg13 transformer was pg 13 many comic book movies are pg13. And pg 13 tend to have the broadest output

Well I grew up around them since before i could remember which was when i was at least 21/2 so up until i was in 2nd or 3rd grade i just assumed they were real Looking back I realize it was silly.
There wasn't really a earth shattering revelation, it was more an understand on how shows and thing work after a while. I remember being young and watching out of are shells and saying in my head this has to be real. I had the BTS out of are shells so it was kinda built to be believed as real, and as a kid I did. Used to dress in all green and play tmnt during recess. Classic construction paper headbands.
But any way I just kind realized they weren't.

What level of TMNT fan is the one that just plain wants the movie to be good, without needing to change most everything about the characters? I am absolutely none of the levels outlined according to those descriptions.
Sure there are levels of fandom and then there are opinions.
For example, you may the tmnts to death but hate the fast forward stuff and someone who loves the fast forward stuff also loves the turtles to death but hate the Tmnt movie.
We all know in our hearts where we lie with respect to out tmnt love. Sharing that love with other like minded fans can be fun and should like anything be respected when it comes to another's opinion regarding particular parts of the tmnt history.
As for the new movie we can all only wait and see whether we will like it. I'd absolutely laugh my arse off if people on this forum who are now admitting to never going to like the film actually fall in love with it and do a 180 degree flip on the whole hating the new movie thing. But hey that's their choice and I respect that. Being a fan isn't meant to be competitive or discriminatory otherwise it just becomes fun for the bullies. Besides there are probably more fans out there watching the new nick series than the lot of fans still following the tmnts after all these years and if so then it will be how they vote with their feet, or rather their parent's wallets, when it comes to the new movie and its' success. Whatever happens and no matter what anyone says I love my tmnts just the way i like them and everyone else can enjoy them how they wish too.

I believed wrestling was real to the point that I would actually want to fist fight people who didn't think it was. I probably realized it wasn't by the time I was maybe 12 or so. I also used to think that my favorite cartoon characters were real and that my toys would play with each other and watch out for me while I was asleep. I would say that's normal childhood thinking right? I mean don't MOST kids think their favorite shows are made of characters that actually exist? Yeah the "innocence" doesn't seem to last as long these days. We are very big Disney fans and we go a couple of times a year and there are tours about how things work and stuff like that but I don't want to take them because I feel it can diminish the "magic". I mean the fun of watching a good magician is the wonder of how he does his tricks. You know they are tricks but it's more fun to just try and guess how or just to say "well maybe he actually CAN do something impossible". But if you actually learn how it's being done you're like "meh...anyone can do that" and it's not as fun. So when my little boy meets Mickey that's really Mickey to him and when he meets Santa it's really Santa to him and I wouldn't have it any other way. The harsh realities of life will find him soon enough. I think that's why so many of us love our vintage figures is because they keep us "connected" to that more purely fun time of life.

As for the BTS. Disney is one of the best for keeping the magic Even when it comes to BTS. Like when i march at Disney land, they(Disney Employees) were adamant about no photos of stuff could me taken in the back lots because they wanted to preserve "Disney Magic" which is good. But there Probably one of the best companies, in that way.
Even their actors are so in character. Did you know if your in DL or DW and you see any of the toy story people and yell Andy's coming or Andy's mom is coming, they fall limp onto the ground like in the movie that just awesome. They stay in character really well.

That's really cool. I will be checking that out for sure. Does she do conventions and stuff? A few years ago at Heroescon I got to meet an artist from Beauty and the Beast and he was a really nice guy. I'm a HUGE Ducktales fan but more of the series than the comic. I like the Carl Barks stuff I've read but I don't keep up with the Ducktales comics that are coming out right now. There is a guy named Don Rosa that does all kinds of Scrooge McDuck stuff and Scrooge is my favorite fictional character of all time. Don Rosa is a great artist but he's really sorta "elitist" and looks down on people that like the show. I've got some personalized art from him but he's not exactly what I would call a nice guy I guess. He believes that Mickey Mouse is a horrible character. That's just crazy I think. Mickey is an ambassador for animation and he should recognize that.

For awhile (approximately the first year or so on this board) I was a number 4, but I have settled down to between a 2 and a 3, since while its nice being a fan, I always want to leave room for other things. IMO being a 4 is not good for you since it overwhelms anything else you try to do, including your job and your family. But I thought this would pertain just to the movie verse. That said:
Level 1: Fondly remembers the first two movies, was disappointed of the third turtles movie, and was aware of the 2007 movie but didn't really see anything more than a clip, and is borderline about whether or not to see the Paramount film. Owns just a little merchandise from the films, possibly just a home video copy or two.
Level 2: Is passionate about the first two movies, fondly remembers the third even if you didn't enjoy it, and saw the 2007 movie but is lukemarm about it, and is poised to see the upcoming film, but isn't as excited as he/she was compared to previous films. Owns a good amount of merchandise related to the earlier films, with the minimum being a home video copy of each film, one action figure from each release, and one more obscure item, such as a magazine pertraining to a film or a set of cards.
Level 3: Passionate about all four previous movies and have watched them more times than they can count, and is pretty excited about the upcoming movie, but isn't confident that it will be a hit. Owns lots of merchandise including some limited edition material, such as autographs, original scripts, the behind-the-scenes VHS of the second movie, and props, along with a complete or near-complete collection of action figures and cards from the movies.
Level 4: See Level 4 from the OP (Full-on Turtle Range).
For the movie verse, I'm probably a 2, since the cartoons/toys/video games interest me more.

I loved the first movie, Loved the Second, The third movie is a guilty pleasure, Really enjoyed the 2007 though i wish it was focused more on Karai or something thought it was pretty good. Im Anxious About the Movie I'm enjoying everything i have seen so far an hesitant on certain aspects but i also Realized there's tons of probabilities and different outcomes

Casuals are on the low-end of the spectrum, while hardcore extremists are on the other end.
Most normal fans should fall in the middle.
So....where exactly do you see yourself there, Sparky?
Hint: You're miles from a "normal fan"....

The Technodrome is such a magical place.
I would pay to watch forum members as contestants in a big brother styled reality series - turtles themed of course.
Powder Vs Cybercubed would make great television...hell - Cybercubed vs anyone would be must-see TV.
I'd love to see a technodrome forums reality show. Cybercubed would have to be paired in a cabin with Jester and Powder for a few days.

I am probably part level 3 mixed with a bit of level 2. The forth movie was alright, but I felt like they scene chomped in too many of the fight scenes, especially the last ones, and damn Raph was really angry at Leo, their fight scene was still awesome though. I felt other scenes could have gone more like this. The final foot fight just seemed very glossed over. I also needed a better bad guy for this film, not necessarily Shredder, but something other than what was in there. Mako made for a great Splinter, I remember first seeing him in that Karate Kid ripoff called Sidekicks that had Chuck Norris and the kid from the second never ending story movie.
I own lots of merchandise, figures, vehicles, playsets, cards, comics, but nothing as rare as signatures, props, or original scripts. And I don't care what anyone says I still like the third tmnt movie, never liked the fact they didn't use Henson's company, but still like the silliness and action. They probably could have tied up characters from the past and present better in the movie because "hey this is a time traveling movie".

Casuals are the normal fans. Everything over is more like a hardcore fan. Anything beyond that is downright obsession...
Making yourself marathon the series once a year..... yeah..... no.
What about once every 10 years?
