View Full Version : Will the CG in this show stand the test of time and look good 10 years from now?

For example good CG is timeless. The original Toy Story came out in 1995, and yet the CG in that movie still looks good to this very day. If a movie that came out in the ancient year of 1995 like Toy Story can still look visually impressive to this day, do you think the Nick TMNT show will be the same?
Or 10 years from now will we all look back at the CG and say, "Man I never noticed how primitive this show looked." or "The CG is really dated now."
What do you think?
I'd say the first 7 or 8 episodes of the series already look a bit "dated", some of the spots looked a bit blocky and choppy compared to the current episodes.
The second half of Season 1 and Season 2 visually already look more stunning and fluid to the beginning of the show.
As for the show in general for the current bit, that's a wait and see to me.

The render they use is rather low keep, but the models themselves on the main characters I think will stand time.

I think if CGI shows can use more models and backgrounds in future cartoons 10 years from now, the cheap re-use of backgrounds and robo-Bradfords and the like will seriously date this show. "look, this was back in the day when they had small budgets and had to reuse backgrounds and background characters".

Yeah but it's no different to reusing backgrounds in hand drawn animation. And really, we only notice it because we're adults. Kids don't.
It'll look dated in a few years, extremely dated in twenty but that will add to the history and appeal of the show. You get fond of them no matter how crappy they look.
Certain scenes will probably stand out and do so forever. The same ones everyone always mention:
Mutagen cannisters slow mo dropping into the city
Parasitica slow mo on the Shellraise garbage cannon
The water in Showdown
A lot of the Leo vs Fungus shots
And several of the action scenes are very cinematic. Film makers would chop off limbs to get real life shots like that.
So yes Cubed, they will age for the most part but it won't really matter.

I'm not fond of the show because of the attroticious writing and unlikeable characters never mind the p*ss-poor animation that doesnt even hold up after five minutes of looking at it
And really, we only notice it because we're adults. Kids don't.
People seriously need to stop playing this card. It's complete bulls*it. Kids are people too and can pick up on things just as easily as we can. Even as a kid, I noticed all the repetition in a Filmation show.

Anyways, I think the CGI in the first few episodes will age a little, but Aslong as the animation keeps improving, I don't think the entire show will look dated.

Wait... whoa? We talking about the same thing here? There's a difference between reusing backgrounds because that's where the main characters live, hang out, etc. But I've never seen a hand-drawn animated cartoon where the characters are in some room that looks exactly like a completely different room in a whole other location in a past episode, and all the characters act like they've never been there before. Today's garage scene stood out, as do all the kraang hideouts that looks exactly the same same.

the only scene so far in its 1 and 1/2 seasons that looked awkwardly animated to me was the turtle temper rooftop scene. raph just looked unfinished, like they didnt put finishing touches on him.
and yeah, the cg will look older over time, but this show is increasing its animation each episode. the start of season 2, with the fight in the kraang ship, you could tell was better than it was season 1. and i think it will continue to get better.
i honestly think the cg will be good long past this shows running, however many seasons there are.

calm down. really. this has nothing to do with your opinions of writing or the characters. if you dont like the animation, thats fine, some of us love it. what i think they were saying was that if you enjoy the show now, you wont mind if it doesnt match up to future looks. like the OT animation versus todays cartoon. the OT still has appeal to some
and so what if kids notice it. it doesnt ruin the show. in fact, i think it makes it better, like reusing certain buildings and alleys and parks, because instead of each episode feeling like its an entirely new city, it looks like the city is an actual city, that you become familiar with.
llike they re-used the set in todays episode, that was obviously from a season one episode. they did change a few things in it so it wasnt identical, and there can be more then one car repair place in new york that may or may not look similar?

IDK....I still like how Jimmy Neutron looks...and that's pretty old XD
So I'm sure TMNT will do just fine~ I always thought it looked awesome for CGI!
Shows like Max Steel don't really grab my attention like TMNT's animation.

I think it'll do just fine honestly. Ten years from now really isn't THAT long. Now forty, fifty years from now, I'm sure it'll look dated, but ten years, nah, I doubt it. And Toy Story is going to be hitting twenty years (!!).
I think it's really great animation and some of the shots are fantastic and it gets better and betters.

Honestly, I don't think most cgi stands the test of time. We are very avid Disneyworld fans and we go a couple of times a year at least and a few years ago I was talking to an actual Disney animator at Hollywood Studios. I told him I was really irritated that Disney had moved from their hand drawn roots and asked him what he thought about cgi. I told him I just didn't personally feel like it holds up nearly as well as hand drawn. He said he had really had to search his heart on that issue and came to the conclusion that it did, in his words, have a "sort of expiration quality". He also said though that he feels like that since Walt was such an innovator and visionary that had he lived deeper in to the technology age that he would have already found something even better than cgi. With all that being said I will say that as a general rule I don't like cgi but I think for this show it just "fits" perfectly. Hand drawn takes MUCH more time and I really think that cgi allows the show to focus more on production quality as far as the writers are conerned because maybe they don't have to staff so many animators. As far as how will it hold up in 10 years, I honestly think the stories on this show are so good that we won't mind the cgi.

If you're not fond of it, why do you watch it and why are you in this section of the forum?
I don't go into the 2003 section and start going on about how I don't like the voice actors because that would be stupid and irrelevant. Not to mention it would just annoy all the other forumers.

I don't really like the animation in this show NOW. I think it might be one of the things that's keeping me from really enjoying this series. It looks like claymation.

Erm... claymation? Where the hell did that argument come through?
For people complaining about CG (I'm not talking about years from now at this point), TMNT really has the best animation out of any other fully-CGI series out there. Seriously, have you ever seen any of the other shows out there? The reason Pixar movies look so good are because of two things:
1. They're on a bigger budget.
2. They don't have to create episode after episode. Just a little over a 90 minute movie.
CGI costs MONEY. Lots and lots of it at that. That's why a lot of the CG animated shows don't look "as good as the movies". So, getting back to my point from earlier. TMNT has WAAAY better-looking CG than any other fully-animated CGI show (although GL:TAS could be a close second).

I certainly think it already looks very dated as it is. Personally, I don't really understand this current trend of so many new shows being CG animated, since as we've already established it is very expensive to produce and lots of corners need to be cut. Why is hand drawn animation so out of style nowadays? It can look polished and well done, and doesn't have limitations on backgrounds and extra characters that are so needed to flesh out a realistic world. The only show I've seen that has truly blown me out of the water with it's use of CG is How to Tame your Dragon, which leaves TMNT looking rather sad in its shadow.

I don't know...I think TMNT makes it up with their expressions.
the turtles seem to have so much life and emotion in TMNT.
I mean in this one scene theres so much expression going on in their faces

I'm glad for the CG honestly, I like it, I enjoy it; I wasn't sure at first since I've never been a huge CG fan (obvious exception was Toy Story-- Antz, maybe A Bug's Life). But mostly I've just never been a fan of it. However, I am really enjoying the animation here. Looks spiffy and great to me! And I LOVE the expressions that they use for the characters, especially the turtles. I can easily see myself watching this in the twenties. :D

No, seriously, claymation. I remember when I watched the series premiere thinking to myself "Is this claymation? I can't tell."
You wanna see good animation, look at Transformers: Prime. This show could learn a thing or two from that show. Not just the animation, but stories/writing as well.

I'm not sure you know what claymation actually is. Watch a video on YouTube of a claymation show and compare it to TMNT. It's nothing alike.

Apart from season 2 of TFP. Which was just collecting relics basically.
And Wallace and Gromit is claymation, this is not. Nothing like it.

well, personally I think TMNT have better CG models (for the main cast some backgroud characters looks a bit off) and I find the animation better, especially with TMNT's combat sequences.
However, I do think Prime got better textures and a better render. But, they also need a better render with all that shiny metal parts have to look good. Most metal bits in TMNT are not as shiny or polished look like compared to some of the robots. the Kraang are pretty shiny textured, but Metalhead is mostly dull/brushed metal instead of polish shininess of a new cleaned car.
But, higher quality textures and more advanced render can make things go slower when chugging out animation scenes. Just look at Kung Fu Panda series vs. the movies, same models more or less, but fur is removed and a simpler render job.

I'm no expert but here's what I think.
If we compare OT and disney animated films, the difference is big because OT has that grainy quality and lower quality coloring scheme. Not to mention some of the OT hand drawn animation looks awkward.
Now if we compare Nick tmnt and current cgi films, like Frozen or The Incredibles, the difference is not that big. The movements/frame rate seems pretty same, only difference is the smoothness and depthness of textures and varieties of models used and lighting.
So I think it'll indeed stand the test of time since the gap is not that big. :tcool:

I can sorta-kinda see where you're coming from. A couple of times very early on in the show, sometimes characters would be talking, and their faces would look like they're quickly "mushing" and then coming back to their original form. While that is true, it still doesn't look a thing like claymation. It certainly has Transformers: Prime-esque animation, if not, better.
Claymation is all over YouTube. Look it up. Looks nothing like it.

This was exactly what I was thinking. I also saw someone mentioning how Toy Story has held up, and while, yeah, it's not bad, have you seen the dog in that movie lately? XD So even movies fall prey to this, I think.
Also, just thought I'd mention that my dad calls this TMNT "that claymation one". I'm a little surprised to hear he's not the only one.

IMO the 4kids series feels the most dated out of the three, since it was made as a 2D series but via computer animation, and outside of shows today like The Simpsons, feels in that awkward adolescence between hand-drawn and 3D CGI animation. That said, I've seen people compare this series to N64/PS1-era animation, and video games from that generation today feel more dated than the 16-bit generation beforehand since it simply enhanced the 8-bit generation and still has that classic fun today. You could say the same thing about the OT, since hand-drawn animation basically evolved from the classic 1930s Disney school, with some tricks along the way to have some datedness such as some limited animation, but the backgrounds remain classic in many scenes and feel more varied than what the Nick show currently offers. If the Nick series can improve its animation as the series goes on, it will help out more since while it will show that it can stay current and feel more "grown up" as time passes. Right now with the way technology is improving, I'd say if the show ended after Season 3, I'd say this show will be dated and most will prefer the earlier series.
