View Full Version : What will TMNT 2014 be rated?

Well they are trying to go for a darker route and the Transformers and GI Joe movies have gotten the PG-13 rating so I think this movie could get a PG-13, which would be awesome IMO. I may sound like a violent freak but I wanna see Leo stab someone in the chest and Raph shove his sai in someone's stomach.

PG-13 is pretty much a guarantee. It's the new target rating for the biggest box office demographic draw. Doubtful you'll see outright stabbing bloody violence of too graphic a nature, but Leo may indeed be able to finally use his weapons for a change.

At this point, a potential PG-13 rating and the level of violence possible under such is literally the only thing this movie has going for it. A TMNT movie first.
Unfortunately... all action is going to be vs. Foot Soldiers without any ninja weapons. And a Megatron Shredder. And maybe some Dimension X monsters.

Yeah, maybe we'll hear them say Damn again. A PG-13 movie can get one F-Bomb. Maybe we'll hear Raph shout "I'm gonna F*** you up!" To someone one. It'd be funny to hear Mikey shout "I f****ing love pizza!" That'd be hilarious.

I doubt we'll hear an F bomb (the parents would absolutely freak if that happened) but hey, if Wolverine can get away with in X-Men First Class, why not let Raph shout one out.

If they keep any kind of tone from the original script its very possible, as they droped the f bomb more than once, used the father less word, S.O.B, poop in its curse word form and a** as well. As a matter of fact after reading that script it makes me wonder what rating they were going for cuz the language seemed excessive for a pg-13 rating

you'd probably be more hard pressed to find a pg movie, given that's a bit of an exaggeration. Most movies now are pg-13.

PG movies nowadays are Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks for kids, basically what used to be for companies associated with the "G" rating. And PG-13 still works for older children since its still acceptable with parental guidance, and I'm sure any parents of children who grew up with the original TMNT are sure to allow their older children too see it. PG-13 for most action movies like Robocop and the Marvels tend to rate it for high fantasy violence with just a side of cursing, while non-action PG-13 movies tend to earn it through cursing and some moderate sexual situations with a side of non-gory violence. Many recent Oscar winners have been R-rated since they can be more explicit in order to pursue the Guild/Academy to acclaim its cinematic accomplishments, and obviously this project isn't geared toward this. The Nick toon is rated a Y7-FV, which basically translates to a PG rating, and that show has just mild language and just moderate animated violence. Of course the movie will be a bit grittier to appeal, so a PG-13 rating looks like a 90% chance of being applied to this.

If this does get a PG-13 I'm sure a lot of kids will still go see it. I saw Iron Man when I was 8 years old, and there were a couple kids in Robocop 2014. It's funny because when I was younger I went to a Catholic school and I was really into Friday The 13th. I told kids I watched those movies, they told their parents, and my parents were getting angry phone calls. Seriously! Since then I left that wacko school and turned into an atheist.

the Jason movies right not the series? I loved the series, but a lot of those Jason movies I couldn't stand. like the first 4 really. 5 had no point and manhattan was terrible but 6, and 7 were freaking fantastic. ratings don't really matter anymore, if somebody wants to see a movie they're gonna see it somehow.

I wanna see Raph crush Shredder/Sach's head with his huge hands (after believing Splinter to be dead) in a bout of pure rage, only for this to reveal that Shredder was a robot and forces the Utrom to pop out of his mid section.

When it comes to language in PG-13 films, it all really depends on it's usage. One of my favorite PG-13 films I watched when I was a kid was Adventures in Babysitting, and they had the F word in it twice. I just don't think they can use it in a strong sexual manner, for example " I want to "F" him so hard" is probably not allowed.

I don't know what to expect with the violence. I would guess some of the most hard core violence in a PG-13 film would probably be the LOTR movies, so expect something like that to a degree.

Lol....I used to love that movie. I think mostly for elizabeth shue at the time....anyway with your example being correct I think thegeneral rule of thumb is a pg-13 movie is allowed to drop the f bomb twice before they haveto up the rating to r. And theres stipulations on others as well just not sure about the rest.

I'm fairly certain Gravity says "the f-word" twice. The second time, I'm not 100% sure. But it's the only time I've noticed two in a PG-13 movie.
But none of us should be expecting that word in a wide-audience superhero movie. Studios know parents and 5-year-olds are in the audience. And it's all 'bout dem toys, knaamean?

Well, I've seen kids in R-Rated flicks as well, if there is something in it as an attraction. One of the movies I can remember that had just as many kids in it as adults was Terminator 2. Another one I remembered, was for some strange reason, Gamer, but my friend said it was probably because of the main kid in the movie.

But I get what you're saying, the X-Men franchise was always more geared towards the teenage crowd than the little kiddies, unlike our fab four.
I wonder, would have the Turtles been just as successful if it had been portrayed right out of the gate more like the 2k3 toon than the light hearted toon we first got.

Eh, doubt that as well, if anyone is going to be dealing the death blow to Shredder, it's more than likely going to be Leonardo. (But then again, it is the movies, and Raphael tends to take center stage in the movie verse, so it makes up for all of the time he gets the shaft in the cartoons)
However, while I have my doubts of him being any kind of a contender for Shredder, I'd love to see him go berserk on one of them foot soldiers, kind of like what Wolverine did to that dude in the kitchen in X2.

The first and second movie had toys ( movie Nightcrawler got the same ugly pants as his movie counterpart), and some characters from Last Stand was integrated into one of the marvel legends sets, I got the hilariously looking Juggernaut and Phoenix, who looks more like a Scarlet Witch then Phoenix
X-Men Origins got a toy-line as well, but that was a 3 1/4" line like GI Joes, instead of 6", it also featured comics based figures, such as comic Gambit instead of his movie looks and a comic costume Wolverine and comic Deadpool for those who didn't care for The movie version, which looked terrible even in toy form.
First Class though, I think there might be some Hot Toys or of similar type of figures, but not a toy-line for kids.

There were a couple of Marvel Universe 2-packs featuring some comic-based First Class figures, that's about it. They weren't even a direct tie-in, just regular MU figures put out around the same time.
Wolverine got a few unarticulated 3.75" figures and a comic-based Marvel Legends wave, and I believe there's a comic-based line due to coincided with "Days Of Future Past" too...

But I feel as if if that show, a Star Wars show, can show people getting killed, why can't Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have the word "kill"? Swearing is a natural part of the language and vocabulary, as long as it's written naturally like any other dialogue should be in a movie there wouldn't be any problem for a character to cuss. Prudes will always take offense anyway, be it language, sex or violence.
But, I am amazed that swearing and nudity can sway the ratings more then violence and death. I find that hilarious

Why would there be a sex scene in a TMNT movie? What purpose does it serve for the story? Please insert some logic before thinking about "possible" scenarios before posting. We didn't see a sex scene in Avengers, or Winter Soldier, or Amazing Spider-Man, or Thor, or Incredible Hulk.

There won't be a sex scene, but one of the turtles will walk in on April while she is taking a shower, no doubt. :twink:

Well, I won't be surprised if they take a note from Nick toon, just reverse the roles with the Turtles, where maybe April bends down and Raph is mesmerized and Donnie snaps him out of it by telling him it won't work.
But then again, maybe it is April that is being the friskie one.

No, but we did see kissing, and I wouldn't be surprised to see some awkward lip locking in this. Why else give the Turtles human looking lips?
To allow the actors expressions and emotions to come through and enhance the overall performance; that's my guess...
...but I do remember from the original movie, Mikey kissing the television screen professing he was in love. The Turtles having romantic feelings for April was always so strange to me...even more so in the Nick cartoon, but that's another thread entirely.

PG-13. I would bet money (and I don't bet) that it'll be PG-13.

I hate when movies add curse word for the sake of having them i think its idiotic. I think t should just be natural.
but i think its definitely safe to say pg-13 would be a legitimate rating.
Not sure if someone can find it but during that behind the scenes show, there was a ad with a kid that turned his bike into the assault van from the movie. And it was hyping products and at the end it had the movie logo and it was rated PG-13.

will never happen...and i am not saying this to be mean, but as long as TMNT has marketing value it will always be aimed at Kids...sure we may get a TMNT movie with some adultish tones but its main audience will always be kids
its the same thing the power rangers crowd keeps forgeting

:( But why!?!? why can't we ever have a more serious TMNT movie? i'm tired of people looking at TMNT like it was only made for kids! well at least this movie is rated PG-13 so we'll get some adultish themes, but i really love the Original Mirage comics.

:( But why!?!?
Money
you only market at adults then you lose all that extra product that is aimed at kids..no food tie ins, no back to school, no video games, no themed clothes, no toys
we wouldnt be seeing any of this extra stuff...sure some of it is nods to older fans but a good chuck of it is for kids
think about all the "Adult" movies and think about the market based on them, think about the products attached to them and where
its the same thing many tell the Power Ranger fans..we see stuff on the shelf because it has the Child Market, but take the away and we lose it all..even "Collector" items would be gone as they in the end are technically toys..without a market to sell to besides the movie itself there is no merchandise

Okay i understand. but it doesn't have to be R, it could just be really dark and grim, like The Dark Knight, and that was a critical and commercial success, so it could be like TDK in tone. and still be PG-13.

dark and grim,
ever since dark night came out i have grown to hate this term, every movie now has to be dark and grim these days because of batman
people seem to forget, that's how Batman is in his world, what as a visual style is now a crutch that guarantees seats be cause "It Looks Like Batman"...even Superman the lighter of the 2 was washed in the Grimdark waters because it was the only way they knew to sell him
sure TMNTS roots have a darker feel, but the world knows them as light hearted goofy brothers

I feel the same way. Wish they just went the straight action movie route. I'm still pumped for the new flick but just wish that people took the turtles more seriously.

Well i understand why TDK had such a big impact on CBMs, and i loved MOS, i did feel like they made it too dark though, i mean that's not what Superman is, and didn't some of the same writers that wrote the Nolan Batman series, write MOS?
Most people don't take TMNT seriously, but just because the world knows them as goofy and Pizza obsessed, doesn't mean they can't make them more like their Mirage roots, a more serious TMNT movie would help people to take TMNT seriosly

Yeah, PG-13 is the right rating for this movie, If you seen all the footage of the action, Its pretty intense and over the top.

No as it's PG13 in the US it be 12A in the UK unless they get scared and make it a 15 (probably would have been if this movie was out over 10 years ago because over the nunchucks and the word Ninja in the title) or they could cut stuff out of it to make it PG.

Blame the OT for setting the trend, because now so many entitled parents EXPECT everything TMNT to be 'for kids.' If any exec tried to make a 'grown up' TMNT movie, she'd/he'd be drawn and quartered, so they don't have the pair to even try. The reason for this is because so many entitled parents think that they have to have their lives revolve almost entirely around their kids, and get upset when others' lives don't do the same. (Thus why no grown-up TMNT movie 'allowed.') These are very often the same people who would drag their kids even to an R-rated TMNT movie, because these people won't say no to their spoiled kids because then they will see widdle Jonny cry. Then they'll complain when the movie has intense scenes and heavy violence, because TMNT is 'supposed' to be for kids.

U - Suitable for all
PG - Parental Guidence
12A - Have to be 12 years or over if you are under 12 you have to be with an adult (It used to be just 12 until the very 1st Spiderman film come out which was a 12 at that time and parents got angry about it as there kids couldn't see it so they changed the rating to 12A a few weeks later)
15 - Have to be over 15 years
18 - Have to be over 18 years

If more people (and non-entitled parents) stood up to them, then this group would lose it's sway.

Well, Technically I didn't downloaded it, I have a capture card and I plugged the Tivo using the Component cables, Then using software to capture the video in 3 parts, So when it goes to commercial, I stop the recording to save it, Then record another after I fast forward through the commercials.

Sooooo, I am curious now. What took so long to get the rating?
Was it, because they originally wanted a PG movie, and no matter how much they cut, it still wasn't good enough for the MPAA, so they were like, fuk it, let's just roll with it.
Or, could they have wanted a PG-13 movie the whole time, and there was either too much R-Rated content, so they had to cut it/change it (damn, I hope to see a directors cut if this is the case) or maybe it did get a PG, but they were afraid that it might chase off the older crowd so they amped up the crude humor/violence to get that PG-13 rating.
I wonder if we will get an f bomb, just so that there is rage from the soccer moms!:D

Well PG 13 is where the money is so they made the right choice. The 80s & 90s Are Over. Hollywood needs to stop approaching TMNT as an exclusively child/family friendly property and start approaching it as a potential blockbuster sci fi/action movie franchise that'll attract the teen/young adult demographic if they want long term success.

Yep. We've been saying that for years. TDK, Avengers, Captain America 2 were all PG-13 flicks, dealt with adult themes and yet, I saw kids flocking to those movies like crazy.
Yep, PG-13 for Sci-Fi Action Violence.
Something tells me more will be included. PG-13 for sci/fi violence, mild language, crude humor and sexual innuendos. Judging by the trailers anyways.

Just because the US rates a film PG13 that means the UK can't give it their own PG rating? Yeah, cos that makes sense.
10 years ago the 2K3 series was out, which wasn't censored in any way in the UK. So we certainly wouldn't have rated it a 15. Not unless Raph was dropping F-bombs. :P
I wouldn't be surprised if we did rate it 12A though. We use that when we can't decide to rate a film either a PG or a full 12.
I think the MPAA's Facebook page confirms a PG13 rating.
