View Full Version : Least Favorite Turtle?

A lot of people express their favorite turtle on this forum, they'll post pics of them in their avatar and signature, or have their usernames named after them. But who is your least favorite?

For me it's Raphael. He seems to me like a whiny little b**** (pardon my French) And as Leo states in TMNT his anger always jeopardizes their missions. He can never get along with Leo, and in the Nick show he torments Mikey sometimes, and Mikey is my favorite turtle in every incarnation, so seeing Mikey getting picked on sucks. But I actually liked Raph in TMNT. Even though his anger did jeopardize what they were doing, I like how while Donnie and Mikey didn't do much, Raph took up being the Nightwatcher, and it was cool to see him stand up to Leo.

But who is your least favorite turtle? (I have a feeling I'm about to get a rain of hate and "MIKEY SUCKS" messages from Raph fans)

For me, it teeters between Leonardo and Michaelangelo. Leo was my least favorite in the OT due to his 1 dimensional personality, but I love him in the 2012 series. In the 2012 series, Mikey is my least favorite considering how much they dumbed him down.

I can't really make a fair assessment for the 2k3 series since I haven't watched enough of it.

truly the hardest question i have ever had to think about. if i absolutely had to choose, i would say Leo. There is no real reason why, but even as a kid i was never pretending to be him. maybe its because he's the leader and the whole responsibility thing sucks.

I am a Raphael Fangirl and yes I think Mikey sucks (but only in the 2k3 series)

My choice would also be Leo, because I think he is too obsessed to be a
great leader. No ones perfect and everyone makes mistakes.

For me it's a toss up between Leo and Mikey. I've nevr cared for characters that play the 'leader' of a group. Don't know why, I just don't like them. As for Mikey, well, being the comic relief kind of hinders him.

I find him funny, sometimes, but if he isn't funny he's annoying and one-dimensional. He needs to become more then 'the funny one.'

How dare you ask me such a question!:P

My least favorite Turtle...

I have to say Leonardo to be honest. I never really liked him in the OT, and i didn't really like him in the movies, whereas the other turtles were brilliant.

So, yeah, Leo.

I still really like Leo, just not as much as the others.

Never liked Leo's (german) voice in the OT. He lisped, and otherwise he was not very cool. My perception in childhood. Today ?? Hmm ...

For me, it's usually been Raphael just because I found his temper tantrums annoying but I love him in the Nick series. It alternates, though, just like my favorite turtle does. Actually, though, I guess it alternates between Raph, Donnie, and Leo. I've never had Mikey as my least favorite turtle (or my most favorite!) but I just love him (maybe he is my favorite and I don't know it?!).

This is a really hard question, though. They all have great points.

Toss up between Raph & Mikey. Raph can be a bit too one-dimensional in certain versions, & Mikey can be over the top in some. Not a fan of when Raph is 24/7 angry or Mikey is hyperhyperhyper.

For me it yo-yos back and forth between Leo and Raph. I've never cared much for the leader/hot-head dynamic, since it just seems so overdone and unnecessary. Okay, we get it- Raph has issues feeling like second-fiddle to the "perfect" son. And Leo is just plain boring most of the time- at least in most of the earlier versions. I actually like him better in Nick than I did in the OT or 2K3 toons. The movie version was okay, but also bland, IMHO.

In the 90's movies and 2k3, Raph was kind of one-note to me, due to his anger management issues being such a huge part of his character. I liked him much better in the OT series. (where he was my second fave to Mikey.) He was pretty much the same in the CG movie, although I have to admit that I LOVED his scene in the diner getting his butt stomped by that little monster! Leo would have SOO never let him live that one down.... For that matter, neither would Mikey, knowing his sense of humor. :trazz:

I'm going Donetello. I love them all but if I had to pick its Donny. A lot of it cause I don't really like the color purple, he is the most needed of all the turtles but he is often times the most under developed. They all have such strong personalities but his tends to stick out the least. You know who he is but he is probably the hardest to connect with.

It's usually either Donnie or Mikey. But really, it's not so much I love them the least, I just love Raph and Leo more

But, Leo, I have this love hate relationship with this guy. I love how he is dependable, cool headed, the go to guy in tough situations, but he is often written so cocky and at the expense of my favorite, Raphael, so I just love the few times we see Raphael have enough of his ego and kick his shell for it! Bring him back to earth.

Wow this is a hard question but it depends on which incarnation.

OT toon - Leo
first 3 movies - dunno, have to watch them again
Next Mutation - (not including Venis) dunno have to watch it again
2k3 toon - A tie between Leo and Mikey
IDW comic - Donnie
07 movie - Leo
2k12 toon - Can't say in this one, It's too hard.

Really difficult to answer...I definitely love Don and Raph the most, but that's not to say I actively DISlike Leo and Mike. I suppose if I absolutely had to choose it would be Leo, since for whatever reason I just don't really care when things happen to him. I'm not sure why, he's really difficult for me to watch or read (like in the comics) about his story arcs and really be super invested unless I'm likewise watching the effect it has on his brothers.

However, as a fanfic writer, Leo tends to be one of my favorites to write about. It's kind of weird, but when I write him it's so much easier to understand him, and discover and appreciate the complexities of his character that I just can't get into otherwise.

Leonardo...ESPECIALLY in the 2007 film. I have never hated a turtle as much as Leo in the 2007 movie. Because he was such a Hypocritical D*ckhead.

Leo could go into a jungle, be gone for a lot longer than he first said he was, make his family think he was dead because he didn't even 'Keep in Contact' with them, comes back and gets a special Medal from Splinter? And Donnie/Mikey are just absolutely fine with it?

Then he makes Raph seem like he was the bad guy because "you went out and fought crime like a vigilante. that is wrong"...while Leo did THE SAME DAMN THING in the jungle. Did Leo forget he was the "Ghost of the Jungle"? Fighting crime Like a Vigilante?

(and please don't give me 'but there are cops who can do it in the city.' Cops can do it anytime but that doesn't stop the Turtles from fighting crime all of those other times. Like Raph said, Crime doesn't take a break. And Raph was fighting the same way Leo was in the jungle. Just Leo being a huge hypocrite.)

In other words, doing the Same Thing Raph Was Doing, and yet "Leo is Right" while "Raph is Wrong"? How does that logic work?

And Yet Leo wants to make it out that Raph was the bad guy...even though Leo disappeared for longer than he should, didn't let his family know that he was okay, gets a pat on the ass and a Medal from Splinter as well as Praise when he gets back...and then that Stupid Line:

"I'm Better Than You."

I absolutely HATED Leo in the 2007 film. I seriously wanted to Deck him in the Face. Hard!

Funny, with Leo, while he gets some serious screen time, I find him to be short changed in the fleshing out his character. He's not the most verbal character except in just pointing out what others are doing, or what they should do, but we're not given any insight to what he's feeling about situations himself.

Yeah, he really rubbed me the wrong way in that one, too. That line most of all. That was such a slap in the face to Raph, who really didn't deserve that. Leo just acted like everything was Raph's fault, and took no real responsibility for anything that happened- in spite of the fact that he was put in charge of the rest. Then he got pissy when Splinter called him on it. Though Splinter DID go overboard saying Leo was responsible for everything when none of them listened to him. He can't FORCE them to do what he says, and Splinter should know that....

I'd have to say Don because I just can't relate to him. I do like him in the Nick series though as that Donatello has more depth than just being "the smart one." Plus, I sometimes find him difficult to write, though I'm doing my best to work on that.

He does? I don't know about you, but I have seen plenty of times when Raph has kicked Leo's ass, and even called out on him when he does do stupid things (like follow around Karai like a dumbass, or trust The Shredder when they first met) Leaders need that second voice, it keeps their heads down and clear, because they do not always make the right choices.

For me, it used to be Leonardo, until I saw the original series episode “Take Me to Your Leader”. After learning just how much pressure Leo is always under and the amount of responsibility he has, I found a new appreciation for his character.

I love all the Turtles, I could never say I have a least favorite…unless were talking about 2003/4Kids Michelangelo.

My least favourite was Donatello because during the 2k3 and Volume 4 years, Peter Laird was in charge of everything and made Don pretty annoying...

Raph has gone from being an emotional prick to a downright bully / abuser... he's my least favourite now.

Good point, and it probably is a big reason why I just can't warm up to him too much when it comes to watching him. But when I write him I can really get inside his head and I often find I sympathize with him quite a bit. Yet I find he's often given the royal treatment in the shows and comics, given a lot of the important storylines and intense scenes, and I grow really bored of it, like 'Oh, another Leo plot :ohwell:'

Only ones I outright disliked:

In 2k3, Mike because he had copious forced un funny humor which was real awkward.
In 2k7, Leo because he's a pretentious, self righteous douche.
I just pick one for each carnation:

OT - Leo (1 dimensional predictable hero character)
2k3 - Don (just overall boring and dull personality. So passive and too soft)
2k12- Mikey (when he has his very dumb moments like Mutation Situation - lame cheese monster joke (wtf?!), speaking without thinking of April's feelings, treating her father like a zoo animal, etc)

But overall I like them all.

Technogeek29

It various from version to version and I couldn't really say least favorite as I have first favorite and 2nd while the other two fall into 3rd place.

OT: Leonardo being a little bland outside of episodes he wasn't the focus or wasn't learning a lesson.

2k3: Raphael was always angry for little to no reason. He had his moments sure but they are few and far inbetween. And his voice is more of what imagine a very much older Raphael to sound like.

Nick: Raphael again who despite being less angry than most Raphael's is somehow more whiney, where the majority of his centric episodes are him screaming "They just don't get it" season 2 alone he's said this 9 times.

He can't FORCE them to do what he says, and Splinter should know that....

Y'know, I really liked that argument with them. Everything Leo said was applicable to Raph and I loved that stinger "I'm better than you" but.....

You're right, in the placement of the film is just didn't make sense. They didn't set up the story to lead up to that confrontation. Peter Laird even had problems with the Leo vs Nightwatcher angle, including the fight didn't really fit and hating that Leo (and Mike/Don for that matter) didn't know the Nightwatcher was Raph.

I think there was a lot of potential because Leo and Raph are parallels of one another in a lot of ways, but it just didn't get put together right in the film.

He does? I don't know about you, but I have seen plenty of times when Raph has kicked Leo's ass,

Agreed, which also kind of bugs me. Leo seems to get beat by Raph most of the time unless it's dojo sparring. I've always been irked that they portray brute force and wrecklessness as able to just outmuscle and overpower disciplined training in a series that's got martial arts at its heart.

Not to say Raph has no martial arts skill, he's a ninja same as the others, but it always seems like when he and Leo throw down they portray it with Raph's brute strength winning out.

But on topic, probably Donatello is my least favorite overall. Not that I dislike him, he's just bottom of my order of how much I like them.

Leo's my favorite and always has been. Can't entirely place why since I'm not usually favoring the leadership character.
Raph's second favorite, but probably largely due to Leo/Raph dynamic being amusing to watch.
Mike is next but I do like the comic relief (and because he's just fun loving, not an idiot, making him the best kind of comic relief).
So that leaves Don to bring in the last spot. To be fair, outside of Nick, I don't feel like Don has gotten the attention he deserves.

Outside of Leo being my favorite, don't ask me to pick an order for IDW. They're all being given facets of their personalities that I really like how well rounded they're becoming.

like I said I love them all, so I only picked Donnie because of his crush on April, which I personally don't care for at all and seeing as that's a part of his character now....it annoys me a little.

also......I relate the least to Donnie......it used to be Donnie and Leo, but since Nick made Leo so dorky and entertaining he actually bumped up to my 2nd fav turtle ^_^

again love Donnie~ whenever his crush goes away he'll be back to where he was before. (or if he keeps the crush...then Nick Donnie will simply be my least favorite Donnie and I'll just move on) no biggie.

1987 - I guess Donatello because he just didn't seem that much interesting in this version. Even so, I still like him.
First film - Donatello because he was nothing like he is suppose to be. He was just Mikey's duplicate.
Next Mutation - Everyone, especially Venus!:x
2003 - No one really.
2007 - While I wasn't a fan of how they portrayed Leo and Raph, they weren't too bad. Don and Mike, despite the lack of screen time, still acted in character. Once again, no one.
2012 - Raphael. I know this is Raph but even for him, being a bully was never part of his character. In the past incarnations, I always viewed him as the "Wolverine" of the group where if you leave him alone, he'll leave you alone. I don't mind him being sarcastic but the way he treats his brothers is just wrong.

For all of the others, I really don't have a least favorite because I either like or dislike the equally. Depends on the incarnation.

False, common misconception.

He actually is very much the most intelligent, verbose, articulate, and nerdy turtle of the group. It just doesn't get to ridiculous levels of inventions. It's a more grounded take on him. He still portrayed the intelligence necessary of the character. Just because he got along with Mikey the most given the alienating battles between Leo and Raph doesn't mean he was a carbon copy of Mikey.

In the first movie? I disagree with that. The only close bit would be him helping fix a truck with Casey (which even Raph could do that). Nothing else in the original 1990 film showed that Donny was "intelligent or nerdy."

Because he knows the word 'homophobic'? I agree with the other guy. They just made him "Mikey part 2" in the first film.

To me, the Donny in the 2nd film did that much better (both voice-wise as well as character wise) by showing the intelligent/articulate/nerdy side.

Plus, for me, Corey Feldman could never cut it as the voice of Donatello (and I like Feldman...he even impressed me as the voice of Slash...but just not as Donny.)

Don't you mean claustrophobic?

And either way, your phrase (even Raphael could help Casey fix the truck) in the comics, wasn't it Raphael that actually had talent in the mechanical department and did indeed help Casey fix the truck.

I wonder why the cartoon never elude to that side of Raphael, showing that he is pretty smart, never on the level of Donnie, but he knows his way around an engine.

Oh, they held him back to make Leo look superior. I don't know why they do that, it's supposed to be a team effort, and Leo is supposed to guide his team to victory, not have this "in order for things to be done right I have to do them myself"

I just counted and notice Leo seems to be the least liked of the guys. Hmmm, maybe because he's too much of a stiff?

That's tough. I generally enjoy the Turtles equally. Their personalities compliment one another. And each of their strengths make up for another's weakness.

I suppose I never really like Leo in 2k3 and in the 2007 movie. I understand he is the leader, but I hate when he is head and shoulders better than his brothers. It undersells the idea of them being a team, and needing one another in battle.

Leonardo since he tends to be the least dynamic of all the Turtles. Why like Leo when all he does is learn off of Splinter and basically just comes up with plans and key attacks? That said, I still like them all, but without the numerous variety of mental emotions that Raphael goes through, the geekyness of Donatello (though he can be boring in some incarnations and would be my second least favorite), and the coolness of Michelangelo, Leonardo may not be as entertaining as the others.

While Leo's always been my favorite (I think it was originally the weapons), I can't really argue with you on his less dynamic development in different incarnations.

That's kind of why I like IDW's Leo so much. He's got more layers of personality. He has the standard Leo parts, but there's a little bit of a vengeful side he's shown against the Foot in battle ("no one escapes" in his micro-series entry) and....sometimes he can just kind of be a dick, and not in the "follow my lead" way. I mean, isn't that common for the "oldest" brother to sometimes be kind of a turd to his siblings? ;)

I think those different aspects to the others and the lack of them in Leo is really a reflection on writers not exploring him more, though and putting him in scenarios to explore those different aspects to the character. One of the reasons I've said on a few threads I was hoping to see him and Alopex develop a friendship. Leo is usually lacking on relationships of any sort outside the family. Guy needs to make some friends...

You moron, leo is superior to all of the other turtles you idiot!! Why do you think he is the leader? He's beat the shreddar alone more than once. He has got the focus, the heart and the patience and most of all the talent. Which is something raphael will never have. so please try to be smart.

Besides Patience Raph has all that stuff. The series hammers it until your skull that his anger holds him back. Leo is a perfectionist and a book smart boyscout his limited imagination holds him back.

Does Venus or Kirby count? out of the four main ones, don't have one. All four of them make one complete personality, or that's just how i see it...

I never really had a least favorite till now, 2012 Mikey sadly :(

When he has forced jokes or acts really stupid it makes me just :ohwell:

Chill out, Jett... you don't have to get vicious. Everyone's got a favorite turtle, you don't have to get nasty to those who don't agree with you.

least favorite turtle...I suppose it is Raphael, but seriously who can dislike any of the turtles all that much?

Generally, I would have to say Leo. His character is just not as interesting as the others and there is not that much depth to his character. I will say that I have not seen the majority of the 2k3 series or read the comics so maybe he is more interesting in those. I still like Leo though.

I was almost going to go with Michelangelo because as I have gotten older he sort of annoys me. In Nick TMNT he is really annoying and he is even a little annoying in the OT. He was alright in the TMNT movies. I still didn't choose Michelangelo as my least favorite because I like that he has a fun loving personality, he weapon is cool and you gotta love that orange bandana.

They all serve their purpose pretty well. As a kid everyone I knew loved Mikey but I found him annoying. Ironically as I've gotten older I find him more endearing. Leonardo is a relatively boring character but an absolutely essential one, similar to cyclops in x-men. Toss up between those two but I'd probably say Mikey although the new show is my favourite version of him

Well, it depends on the incarnation, obviously but I guess my vote goes for Michelangelo. They turned him into an annoying idiot in the past decade.

Raphael's anger can be pretty annoying as well now that I'm no longer a teenager, but at least his 87 incarnation saves him.

Michelangelo in all incarnations except in the 4kids series.
But when i play a TMNT videogame for exemple i choose everytime Mikey, 'cause he is MY turtle since the original series.
Maybe if i was begin to watch the 4kids series or Nick series, my favorite was Donnie, Raph' or Leo i don't know.

This is a hard one, but I'll go with Don. If for no other reason than I didn't want to dress up as him when I was a kid.

Least Favorite Turtle?

It's difficult because I enjoy all four of them almost equally if they are depicted well (i.e. OT and the 1st movie), but when they decide to make caricatures or extreme forms of their personalities, then that's when they become grating. The most irritating are 2K3 Raph (he seems to constantly throw petulant baby tantrums over almost anything that doesn't go his way), 2K3 Mikey (his cockiness and idiocy makes it a loathsome combination), and to a degree Nick Mikey (mostly with how the writers are treating him by using his optimistic personality as a default for making him dumb for the show's comic relief; he doesn't sink into aversion like 2K3 Mikey because at least his heartfelt personality is more visible.)

This is a tough question to me but only because I can't decide between two of the four brothers. Back when I was a kid, I liked Donatello the least since his bandanna was purple (a color I've never liked), his weapon was a bo staff (or stick I used to call it in a flippant way....hey, I was little), and he was the "smart one" who built machines which I was not keen on at a young age.

However, being a Raph fan, I generally dislike Leonardo. He comes off usually very vanilla overall and he was arguably the "leader" in the original cartoon that I grew up with (without Donnie they might not have won a lot of their battles).

As an older dude now I respect Donnie as a smart guy because I think that is a good trait to have and tend to dislike Leo more now than I did when I was a kid. So I guess the real answer is Donnie from my childhood and Leo now.

Pretty hard to choose.......*thinking of every incarnation so far*....

I will go with Mikey.
OT Mikey was okay but every kind after that was over the Top and 2k3 Mikey is too (how could I put it gently?) bothersome.

Oh this is a tough question.

OT: Raphael

First Movie: Michelangelo

Second Movie: Michelangelo

Third Movie: Leonardo

Next Mutation: Does Venus count as an answer? If not, Michelangelo

2K3 Series: Michelangelo

2K12 Series: Donatello (only because Aprilello)

False, common misconception.

He actually is very much the most intelligent, verbose, articulate, and nerdy turtle of the group. It just doesn't get to ridiculous levels of inventions. It's a more grounded take on him. He still portrayed the intelligence necessary of the character. Just because he got along with Mikey the most given the alienating battles between Leo and Raph doesn't mean he was a carbon copy of Mikey.

Very true. Donnie in the movie(s) was calm and laid-back, but he was very much a thinker. We see it at the very beginning of the movie, in fact, during his conversation with Mikey while they wait for the pizza delivery guy. He is FAR from being "Mikey part Duex" there, or even later on. He is often a board for Mikey to bounce his jokes off of, but his own humor is more eclectic and off-beat. Most of the time, the others don't even seem to "get" his humor! :twink:

That's hardly the only example, though. Not only did he help fix the truck, but he also was playing with some piece of broken electronics when Danny mentioned the pizza he'd had in the lair, he answered a question correctly (without even thinking about it, so he must be well-read) while he and the others (minus Leo) were playing Trivial Pursuit, and he also used a number of "big words" throughout the first film. How many people even know what "bossa nova" means? :twink:

Donnie was more of the focus in the second movie, so it makes sense that his intelligence and ability with science and his "nerdiness" would be shown more, but he was the same character (voice-acting notwithstanding), just a bit more developed. Still had the same humor and intelligence, but it was in the spotlight more. And unlike many others here, I LOVED Corey doing Donnie's voice! I've known a couple of "nerds" who sounded like that- not weak or whiney, not stuffy or even obnoxiously snooty about their smarts- just laid-back, quiet, and down-to-earth. His voice is a little rough, but that's what made it so good; he didn't sound like the stereotypical "nerd".

Ditto about the claustrophobic comment!

They both do, actually. Raph seems to have a natural ability with mechanical things, but Donnie does too, and adds to it with his techie skills. We see them both working on various vehicles in the 4Kids/2K3 series, and Raph has been shown working on his bike or the van almost as much as Don does. Raph also seemed to be the best driver of the four in the OT, oddly enough, especially in the "Raphael Drives 'Em Wild" when his mind gets switched with a cabbie's. Maybe he should be a race car driver.... :trazz::tlol:

I can't remember what episode it was, but the scene where the van almost crashes next to a wall, and Mikey is like totally terrified, and Raph says to him "why so worried, you had like 3 whole inches to spare!" still cracks me up to this day.:tlol:

This is difficult, because I like each of the archetypes they're based on. In general, I guess Leo would be my least favorite or maybe Mikey, but that's mostly because I'm a sucker for Donnie and Raph. But I love drawing Leo (he's just so dramatic and heroic) and writing about Mikey (I have more ideas related to him), so I dunno. I guess, by incarnation:

Mirage--can't choose, love them all
OT--Leo. He was just kinda meh.
Movies--Leo
Image--Cyborg Don. Because no. Not like that, anyway.
2K3--Mikey or Raph, depending on the episode. There were times when Raph was just too predictably macho and angry. Mikey could be arrogant or obnoxious (Battle Nexus. ..ugh!)
2007--Leo or Mikey. Leo was being kind of a jerkface, but Mikey was dumb in a way that irritated me
2012--??? Leo or Raph...If I have to?? Leo is getting some interesting character development, so it'd be hard for me to throw him under the bus here. He's interesting, because he's still developing his leadership skills and his fighting abilities in the series. He's more disciplined than his brothers, but isn't the perfect student. He makes mistakes and is still building confidence, so we're seeing him at an earlier stage in his development.

Raph is sarcastic and plays tough, but looks out for his brothers. That's how I like him. He's grumpy and cocky, but not in a grating way. I just want to see way more of him. I'm looking forward to seeing him and Casey get into trouble! *fingers crossed*
