View Full Version : Could the Turtles actually start out as humans?

It started as an uneasy feeling, a eerie hunch, when the actors were cast as Turtles and all looked their parts.
I remember posting about it and being relieved I wasn't the only one thinking it...
Then again- some thought we were insane.

I must admit I'd totally forgotten about it.
Until I saw the teaser today. And the dormant fear returned...

The fact that "heroes are created", The ooze-fueled Super Soldier machine,
and worst of all, how unsettlingly human the 'Turtles' look... The nostrils, the lips instead of beaks...

The more I think aboout it the more I think it's not just a paranoid imagination...

Also, let's be honest... knowing Michael Bay and his modern action movie henchmen, with the photomodel lead actresses and the humongous antennae falling from skyscrapers for the umptieth time...knowing what we know now after seeing the teaser and how realistic everything looks... I can't honestly imagine that -with the movie's 'creation of heroes' plot- they'd actually consider using baby turtles as guinea pigs to spawn the saviours of the city.

Seriously- I sure hope I'm wrong. I hope they didn't dare and that I'm imagining things...

Could be. The Turtles could have been teenaged Foot Soldier recruits, and Splinter could have been Hamato Yoshi, the guy training the Foot Soldier recruits who has a change of heart.

Instead, you make it worse with a very likely sounding explanation...

It's probably even the more likely scenario. Only question is if they bumbled onto the ooze and got accidentally exposed or if it was an intentional dosage/they were forcibly exposed.

I'd bet the former. I can just imagine some lame scene with their version of Dude Mikey, as a human, bumping into some canister, knocking it all over his brothers and Yoshi.

Anyway... Sorry to freak you out, buddy...

Just thought of another reason the Bay suits could've concocted this wacky idea...
If the Turtles truly start out as humans,- the lil' youngsters can go "Gee, that means I could be a Turtle too"...

Dear lord that would suck. Especially since they wouldn't be Teenagers anymore, we would have to call them Adult Mutant Ninja Turtles, or AMNT

Why would that mean they'd be non-teenagers? And if they're 18 or 19 they're still adults and teenagers.

Why not, they seemingly overhauled pretty much everything about Shredder.

It is believable that they start out as humans but I really hope that is not the case! In the movie, Splinter is played by a little person and I imagine that he is created the same way as the turtles. If they started out as humans, that would probably mean that Splinter would be the same size as the turtles. So maybe there is hope that they don't start out as humans.

We, Splinter as a human could still suffer from Dwarfism, like Trask does in X-Men Future Past.

This is one possible alteration I would object to. The adversity and isolation they faced from the start of their lives had a hand in shaping their personalities and their perceptions of the world around them. They wouldn't be the same if they were just four boys who knew ninjitsu and had similar personalities to the turtles we know.

Candy Kappa

Well, Shredder isn't the same, so why not the Turtles. It's a brave new world, stupider, but brave.

Let me start by saying that I'm not defending the movie. Unless the final product changes my mind I'm still not a fan of the redesigns of the turtles or the whitewashing of splinter/shredder.

But I don't think the turtles are going to start out as human. I'm also taking shredders voiceover in the trailer with a grain of salt. Teasers are montages cut together with dialogue in order to give a feeling of momentum, more than give an idea of plot like a full trailer does. Often the dialogue used has nothing to do with the visuals being represented. I wouldn't be surprised if Eric Sachs (ugh) was either A. talking about something completely different than the turtles (perhaps how the mutagen was created/discovered/researched as some super soldier serum) and/or B. he is lying to April about how the mutagen came to be. He is the Villain after all.

Again, not saying we'll like the final product..just that I highly doubt this movie will show children being turned into hideous turtle monsters. It is being marketed to children after all.

Also if mikey is so naive about his looks and thinks his bandana is really a sufficient disguise, then i doubt they were human before. if its really a joke and he means it as a joke, i still doubt that they were human before.

TurtleTitan97

Though if it's anything like the IDW origin, I could live with it.

Well in the first movie, Raph thought that a trench coat and fedora was a sufficient disguise to go to the movies lol. I think it was meant as a joke. Obviously he knows that she is freaked out because he is a giant mutated turtle with lips.

Yeah, this is going way too far. If they are changing this much, then why bother with making the TMNT to begin with, might as well just invent something themselves, like the Dinosaur Warriors of NYC!

It would certainly save time having to explain how 4 pet turtles learnt how to fight.

Suppose they could have been ex-ninjas??

Its a possibility.

This is pretty much my thought process, I honestly don't think he seemed to mean that as a joke, I think he just has a limited understanding of humans and what causes their fear.

As far as the mention of Raphael using trenchcoat/fedora as a disguise from the original movie, that is a disguise going back a long ways, I mean Ben Grimm did the same when he tried to pass unnoticed in the Fantastic Four comics, as did the turtles in the original cartoon. Believable? No...hence the cab driver playing up the absurdity, but Raphael never intended that as a joke, to him it was a legitimate disguise...

Well his outfit is kind of ridiculous, and he hoped that it made him seem more human...

Either that, or to his mind, he believes that humans are a bit more understanding to physical differences, and believes that he'll be viewed in better terms...kind of like 2012 Mikey when he tried to give the human his cat back, not believing that he would be feared...

In order for this to be true and for them to be Teenaged TCRI would need to test the mutagen on human babies. I don't think that happens.

Weeeeell, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they did turn out to be humans. Just Hollywood putting their spin on things, I guess. I think I'd be unhappy with that origin. Maybe I'd get used to it in this incarnation after a while though. Wow, testing mutagen on babies? Now I'm picturingsome little six-legged kid running around TCRI. (Utrom scientist/prisoner)"Oh boy, some tot activated the transmatt again. Sent an utrom to the president's desk in the White House wearing nothing but a birthday suit and scared him half to death. Lucky Bo decided not to eat him." Well, if this movie is indeed as dark and gritty as promised, they might just be experimenting on human babies and imprisoning utroms. The mutating babies bit might be pushing the dark gritty factor too far, but that's Hollywood for ya. Not gonna quote the babies bit from SOTO. Really gonna resist here.

Hoping the TMNT keep their cute little pre-mutated turtle origins, but ya never know how this thing's going to turn out. I'd say the turtles having human origins is a pretty strong possibility, however. They want to put a new spin on the turtles, and we all got infuriated over the aliens thing. Maybe the writers were like,"Hey, let's make em humans! We can still be original!" They did that in IDW already though, writer guys. Sorry. They'd probably respond with,"Nuh uh, that was reincarnation! Our thing is different! Why, it's gonna blow your minds!" It really makes allot of sense from the whole NEW SPIN point of view. I think they're going to do it. Hoping not, but who knows? So will everyone go nuts over the whole human origin bit if it becomes a reality, I wonder? Is it going to be like the alien origins debacle all over again? I like my mutants formerly known as pre-mutated turtles, thanks. That's just my opinion though. I'll give the human origin a shot if that's the way things end up.

That little computer monitor showing turtle to human further seems to indicate that the project was specifically trying to create humanoid animals.

So....Eric's intention was to create humanoid animal heroes..... Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles? ;)

If they were intentionally created as they are, I'm more confused than ever how they're going to establish a reason to pit Shredder vs Turtles and how Hamato Yoshi could be remotely involved.

Which makes me also wonder how a rat becomes their mentor to teach them ninjutsu....or why the heck they would need to become ninja in the first place.

So many questions!

I agree with Fox. More answers would be nice. But as one of my favorite decepticons has been known to say,"I can wait." Well, I think I can wait. Uh, maybe.

Could be. The Turtles could have been teenaged Foot Soldier recruits, and Splinter could have been Hamato Yoshi, the guy training the Foot Soldier recruits who has a change of heart.

that actually sounds pretty plausible. and not a bad turn of events. not my first choice, as I prefer the creation of the Turtles as accidental, but not a terrible way to go. I mean the writer did say they don't want to tell the same story.

If they don't start out turtles, turtle would have been an odd idea to mutate them to make "Heroes".

Wolf or something more hardcore would have been more aggressive.

Not really, turtles have shells. Mammals don't.

Probably safe to say the Johnny Knoxville casting squashes this idea, unless human Pete Ploszek transforms into a Leo with Knoxville's voice, or they reshoot with a human Knoxville...
