I think that this warrants a thread.I watched the trailer again and i noticed one thing, there's only one name in the whole trailer "FROM THE PRODUCER MICHAEL BAY" isn't it weird that there's no name of the director or any of the cast members? It's even cut like a transformers movie trailer. It has almost the same Michael Bay Over saturated color. This says something about the movie, i think they are making this for Transformers crowd. It will be exact same movie as Transformers only with Ninja Turtles. anyone who says that Michael Bay has nothing to do with this is wrong.

Makes sense to me. I feared this would happen. I used to defend Bay's involvement to "haters" online a lot, months back. They made it out to see as if he had minimal involvement, and was just one of many creative consultants or investors, so I tried to re-assure people... But now it seems abundantly clear now that his stamp is all over it. That'll benefit the visuals, it will be quite the sight as far as blockbusters are concerned, but just about EVERYTHING else has suffered as a result of the involvement of him & his team. The fact alone he cast his buddy & go-to eye candy prove that, plus all the military fan-service.

As soon as I finished the teaser it was painfully obvious this was a Michael Bay movie, specifically very nearly IDENTICAL to the Transformers movies.

His style is telegraphed a mile away.

Transformers has been very successful for Paramount so it makes sense that they would use the same formula for Ninja Turtles.

i have no issue with this whatsoever, if it means a huge box office numbers then im all for that, that means more turtle adventures for all of us, there actually relevant now since 2012 man i love it, at the end of the day as long as this movie is better than turtles 3 i really dont give two craps..

are u guys actually gonna complain if the next 3 turtles movies are better than the 3rd perhaps better than the second ?? u think thats a bad thing in any way whatsoever???

cause if u do then youre a damn fool.. my expectations are quite realistic and i think were gonna get a passable movie here, look at all the junk that todays youth idiots love as it is, this almost guarantees the turtles to be even bigger..

Wow, you've got some pretty high expectation's there, Of course it's gonna be better than the Turtles III, I've made better movie than that this morning.
If this movie is as horrible as it looks it will be but is just a little better than Turtles III will you still want it to make a lot of money? I think you don't know what you are talking about.

I don't even think its about reaching out to the TRANSFORMERS crowd, but to put a well-known name behind the movie. The two names you know from transformers franchise, which is a huge success in mainstream media are Michael Bay and Megan Fox.
Michael Bay has become infamous with the success of the transformers movies

Batman and robin has 2 Villains from the comic's, it's funny (in all the wrong's ways) it has lot of ****** action scenes, it has Robin and it has Batgirl, turtles III has nothing, absolutely nothing. It's just a blank screen, it's that bad, way worse than Batman and Robin. So you want this movie on the level of Batman and Robin? That made some money.

You are correct Bay was involved in this movie. Read the interview in the source link for more.

"Q: What sort of influence does Michael Bay have on the overall style of the film?
Nemec: Michael has been an influence on the movie and he's certainly been giving his notes and paying attention to the movie as we go through. There are Michael Bay aesthetics. He has a very good sense of action. He has a very good sense of entertainment. I think that, on those influences, you'll feel Michael Bay's hand."

A race to the bottom.

I actually don't think it looks crappy, based solely on the trailer. I think a lot of us have been waaaay too harsh and critical of the movie up to this point (myself included).

Visually, it may not be exactly as we expected or preferred, but it certainly doesn't look "crappy". The effects are done really well and a lot of time and money has been spent on it....it's obvious.

The plot and what they do with the origin of all the characters will make or break it for me.

Defending the new TMNT by comparing it two franchise killing movies. I'm sure that's the buzz Paramount was looking for.

Also, I'll play along -- at least Batman and Robin had decent actors and production value. TMNT 3 is unwatchable. The whole thing looks cheap -- especially the turtles themselves. Batman and Robin was a huge failure but there was an attempt by Schumacher to do something with it. TMNT 3 was basically "how much more money can we squeeze out of this before the core audience grows out of it."

You know, the exact same thing could be said for Transformers 2.

Sure, it can....the visuals weren't crappy in that movie either. My point is that the movie doesn't "look crappy" based on the trailer. Again - what they end up doing with the story, how it's told / unfolds, what the origin of the characters are, etc. will ultimately determine whether this ends up being a craptastic $hitfest, or something well done.

Every single person I know that watched the trailer today (all non-hardcore fans like us) thought it looked "not bad" to "really good". Even the poll in the other thread has something like an 80/20 split in favor of the trailer making the movie look good. The trailer on youtube has 27K thumbs up compared to 5K thumbs down.

We're being too harsh.

This movie's story will in no way be like transformers. I don't get that complaint. I really don't. Will there be a teenage boy who befriends a bunch of 18ft tall alien robots who transform into cars, with evil counterparts all fighting for the allspark? All because Bay is involved and there will be a lot of action? It's SUPPOSED to be full of action. We've already been told countless times that the main thing carried over in this story from other TMNT versions is a strong story about family, brotherhood, etc. Sounds like a lot of super fanboy crying without a ton of facts or merit to back it up. It's getting a bit ridiculous at this point.

Yeah nobody's saying that.

What they ARE saying, and not without merit, is that it's looking like the characters that should be the MAIN characters, the Turtles, will probably be pushed into being the side characters to the April O'Neil character. Who SHOULD be a side character.

Just like Transformers. The more interesting titular characters got shoved into the background for the completely UNinteresting human characters.

You could say April was THE main character in the original movie, which to me is my favorite version of the TMNT. Hell, she even narrates 1/3 of it (when the go to the farmhouse).

That movie is pretty much universally (or close to it) loved.

So, sorry - that argument doesn't hold much water because we've already had a movie do just that, and be really good. Not to mention, we have NO idea how much April will be the focus and how much the turtles will be "shoved to the background". It's all complete speculation at this point. Even if that ends up being the case, it doesn't guarantee a crappy movie.

She's the POV character for the audience. It's still very much the Turtle's movie.

That's your take on it. I can argue she is since the whole story revolves around her and she is in most parts of the movie.

Regardless, how do you know that isn't the case for this movie as well?

All I'm saying is that it probably makes sense to save a bit of the hate until we have more information, and quite honestly, until we've seen the movie for ourselves and know for sure how we REALLY feel about it.

Trust me - I'll be the first to bitch and moan if it sucks. These are my all time favorite characters - I want them to be handled correctly and with care.

I was also defending bay in the beginning. I had hopes that the film would be something more, but in a cool, more realistic way.

With TF, they designed the bots from actual car parts modeled in cg, to sell the realism.

Some suffered from the designs, some of the bots benefited, and overtime, I accepted the change.

I'd hoped they would have taken the same approach with this film.

They have some of the best of the best VFX artists working on this film.
But they went with the designer of GRIMM, and had a monkey pick the cast.

I'm now anti-Bay.

So no - I AM one of those who was happy that Bay had control, and I liked TF. I'll bet many other fans of TF are looking at this and shaking their heads.
Hardly anyone will want to watch this for two hours when their faces make you queasy.

That's what I thought too ever since the on set pictures were revealed. It just looked like a Michael Bay movie. The trailer just reinforces everything. Especially giving that Michael Bay's name comes up before Jonathan Liebsman's (his name actually appears at the very end).

It's not just TF fans they're selling this to. They're trying to sell it to the fans who they believe will see the film because it's got the Ninja Turtles in, the casual fans of the FW Turtles who watched the show when they were younger and see the movie out of nostalgia, the fans of the Nick show to sell them more action figures, and of course the horny teenage boys who will see the movie just for Megan Fox.

Also, would it surprise anyone if Michelangelo had a speech comparing Turtles to Onions?

Being from the tmnt crowd I was never bothered having the transformers sold to me and I'm sure the transformers crowd feels likewise. As for selling this to the tmnt crowd I'm pretty sure it is sold, whether one likes it or not will be another thing. What I mean is that even if one hates what they've seen they are still most likely going to see it, hence sold. As for liking it, we'll see when it comes out. I for one am loving all that I've seen so far and am glad I am an adult this time around to ride the wave of tmntmania.

There were parts of TF2 I actually liked. I liked every second that was Giant Robots Punching Each Other In The Face While Sh*t Explodes. That's the movie I PAID to see. I got a solid 3 or 4 minutes of it, for sure. Every second that wasn't that, though, was agony. Every second.

As far as TMNT III vs. Batman and Robin, I don't know, man. I think B&R is truly offensively bad. The worst thing I can summon about Turtles III, is that nothing happens for really long stretches and it's really just boring overall. Dated early-90s humor aside ("Schwing!" hadn't even been funny for a loooong time by then), there's nothing "bad" about it. Just sucked for lack of trying to be anything more than, "Here, it exists".

Bland Vs. Bad isn't quite a fair argument.

I noticed the text was similar to Transformers but like mentioned its just because he's a more familiar name.

I know Im in the minority but I liked Batman and Robin. Its not great but it knew what it wanted to be and did it...be a flashy over the top Batman movie. Its entertaining in that regard.

Turtles 3 is just a generic fighting movie with the them thrown in. Makes no effort to even seem like its in the same universe.

I'm confused by how "It" willed itself into existence as something so awful. They weren't exactly *trying* to make that movie into what it became, after all.

The cast and director had no interest in making that movie as it turned out to be. Every single one of them, even Schumacher, has said that making that movie was a nightmare, that everything he did want to do was overruled by studio executives, literally screaming at him, "It's a toy commercial, not a movie!"

I think it's less a case of, "It knew what it wanted to be" when the people actively doing the work on it didn't have any intention of it being... that. More like, "it aimed low, it hit the mark it aimed for, and hey, at least nobody died." Except Jeep Swenson/Bane, but, y'know. Steroids.

Yeah, i wouldn't mind a movie from April's point of view, but you are forgetting one thing, it's Megan Fox. She has a personality of a plank and acting ability of a dead fish.

I'll politely disagree about the second part, but the first part is fair. I only pull the, "You don't get it, it works this way" card when I know I got the history/facts right. Otherwise, I'd just be a generic douche. I've read an unfortunate amount of these Hollywood Clusterf*ck stories in agonizing detail, especially the ones about movies based on comics and cartoons. I love these properties, and I love finding out how they get turned into movies and shows... at first. Then after I find out, I'm usually just sad. :ohwell: We give these people way more credit than they deserve, generally. That's a sad fact.

My whole, oft-repeated, "they only care about the toys" belief comes from their own collective mouths, not just what I infer by looking at the products they make. :P In B&R's case, they quite literally designed the characters, costumes, vehicles, etc., by showing kids concept art for toys. They did all of that way, way before they had anything even close to a script. That's basic, standard policy when making these kinds of movies. Call it a cynical hunch, I'm 99.9% sure the TMNT movie was done the exact same way. It's *more* a toys-first property than, say, Batman, after all. And it would explain a lot of the aesthetic choices for the entire movie that we've seen thus far.

I mean, I fully cop to being a cynic sometimes, but I kind of don't trust a company that's making a movie based on Happy Meal potential to give me the TMNT movie I want. One I can not hate? Grudgingly accept? They might pull that off, still. We'll see. :)

Apparently they had to cut some scenes out because they felt they were too dark (such as Two Face's escape from Arkham).

I wouldn't say that the suit was the best. I mean, this was where the bat nipples/bat bulges started.

except the nipples ofcourse. I saw those scenes, escape from Arkham is nothing special but there are scenes, important scenes which explain why batman is doing what he is doing that where cut. and that's so bizarre.

It's hard to read this and not interject.
To say this movie isn't about money, or rather cashing in on the potential of a proven property, is madness.

Viacom seccured the property for 60 mil.
Last year they turned a profit of 500 (rounded) mil.

The CEO paid himself 80 mil, while he cut staff on other shows.
The staff, were artists.

As soon as the viacom deal was done , Brad Fuller sought out the option to produce, way back in 2009.

He did this because he has a formula. If you don't believe me, he's on YouTube talking about it, where he specifically talks about the w5's of Platinum Dunes, and why they buy old popular films, instead of creating from scratch. He's big on brand recognition.

The reason the trailer "feels" like a bunch of movies sewn together, is because that's just what it is. That is how you pitch a film! You make a 2minute sizzler, which is made up of pieces of other movies, to illustrate the film you want to make. You go to your backers, be it studio or who ever, and you sell them on it. The new film will have all the thrills of other high profile films, but different enough to be new and exciting, which are just buzz words for "profitable". this movie will have an evil scientist, because the last movie that had said scientist grossed 600 million. This is how it's done. For real.

Hollywod is a machine. People rely on the work to feed their families. This is why the oscars had protesters marching outside, because productions are moving out of Hollywood, for tax incentives.

Sounds artistic so far right?

The tent poles, like Turtles, are there to bank role the art films that won't turn much profit. In the last few years, the number of low budget studio films has dropped to almost nil, because why bother, when you can just pocket that money, or roll it into my little pony the live action movie, etc.

There's no profit in an artistic Turtles film, but theres money in a 30 something nostagic property for everyone to "like", and possibly take their kids to.

However, They aren't really making the movie for kids. They are making it because they know adults 18-35 will pay to see it, and bring their kids.

They don't care if you like it. That's gravy. If you do great. Now you'll buy the peripherals. If you love it you'll go nuts and buy everything more than once.

They want kids, but they're betting the parents will indoctrinate the kids, buy them toys as an excuse to buy them for themselves. Even better, the parent and child both buy toys! And their are 4 turtles! So the turtles need to be drastically different so that they buy all 4., but now they've purchased 8 turtles, not 4, and the number multiplies depending on family members, and the households collective nerdiness. Won't be the norm, but it will happen.

It's the art of business, and the business of film, but not an artistic film.

And to counter the other craziness, Star Wars wasn't built this way in the 70's.
78 superman wasn't either. I could rattle of countless films that were not sausage films.

The block buster wasn't a formula until Top Gun. And it's a process.

You show up at 8am, work very hard, and get little sleep. They push you to do overtime regularly. They don't care about you, just how quickly you can get what they need done.

It's not a cynical stance, it's a fact. Yes, if you're a designer you do get to draw all day, which is great, but, when that becomes day after day, night after night, get home at 3, get up at 6...weekends too...
Yeah...after a while it's just work.

But the art? Feel free to point it out, when you find it.

i dont know if that counts as "selling tmnt to transformers fans though" since its more seeing one guys editing style vs other trailer editors

GA could care less about the production studio, and the TMNT is probably a bigger behemoth than the horror flicks PD produced.

Not to mention, when looking at their filmography, PD has not had a flop yet, and TMNT is the biggest budget film they have ever been involved in.

Only in the case of the Bay/Liebesman duo.

There's not a producer on the planet that could fire Chris Nolan or Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese.

THOSE guys are in charge of their movies, not the producer. Producer has input, but nowhere near as much as Bay has on this Turtles movies.

The thread for this movie is over 200 pages on TFW 2005, so apparently many Bayformers are looking forward to this. I'm more worried about selling it to the crowd who last heard of TMNT with the 2007 movie or the '90s movies who missed the 2007 movie, since they could be in for quite a shock, and that the media will need to lend a hand to get those fans to see it like they did with the 2007 movie.
