View Full Version : What if April stays as a teenager

How would you guys feel if April became a teenager permanently in future media such as comic books, cartoons, TV shows, movies, etc.?

This is already not happening. April is an adult in the movie and in IDW she's in College.

I'd like it. In other versions it works because the turtles were adult-like, but think about it: four teens hanging out in the sewer with a full grown woman. I find that odd. Just my opinion, however.

It depends, if there's no meaning to it, I'd say no.

In the Nick version, it makes sense cause since the Kraang were trying to find her since she was born and looking for her for 15+ years, plus the fact that she is indirectly the reason the turtles and Splinter became mutated in the first place, it adds something to the story that she is around the same age as the Turtles, and where they were mutated the same time she was born.

If she was in her 30s in the Nick show, that wouldn't have had nearly as much meaning. But the Turtles and Splinter being mutated as the first cause and effect of The Kraang showing up in New York to find April, that has significant meaning.

That was the main reason she was made a teen in the first place. The love triangle thing is an add on, but the former of what's stated above is the main reason. People that don't think that, whatever, but just put two and two together and it's pretty clearly written out as such.

So if there's reason, sure they can do. But if it's doing it just to do it, I prefer them not.

Nick's April is my favorite to date. I'm not sure if her being a teen has anything to do with it but if the sum of her character requires a younger age, then it's fine.

if it's done right...sure.

but after watching Nick April......I think I rather April remain a young adult.

or at least 18.

I feel they only made April a teen in Nick so she could be a love interest....

No, just now. Hate how they are doing her in the Nick show, she's probably my least favorite incarnation. (Megan Fox doesn't count) feel's like they have changed her only so Donatello can slob all over her. April has a purpose, she's turtles connection to the human world, as a teenager she doesn't work that great...

Whatever, as I stated two and three posts before respectively, think that if you want. It's not a bit accurate, but think that if you want.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm the only one that notices things or looks closely at how a story is being done. :ohwell:

like I said I don't mind a teen April, if done right. I was so excited for teen April actually.

but looking at her now....the love triangle seems to be taking over her character...which causes me to believe that's one of the main reasons they turned her into a teen in the first place.

but it's not just the love stuff I have a problem with....it's her whole story.
I hate the fact she has powers....I hate the fact she's the "key" I hate the fact she's fast learner, and I hate the fact she's not good friends with the other 3 turtles(even if she wasn't a teen and was like this I'd still hate it)

there are some great scenes that happened because she is a teen...but just not nearly as many as I thought she would..or should have.....

Nick April has so much potential....

I understand you like Nick April, but that doesn't mean you have to disregard any criticism for her. This April has flaws.

I love Nick Mikey...but even I know he has major flaws that need tweaking.

I'm not saying she has no flaws, I don't like the fact she has powers either, I'm very bugged by that.

I'm saying don't say things you know aren't true, because if you or anyone honestly thinks the only or even main reason she was made a teen was for a love interest, then I'm sorry but you're not paying attention to the story if you truly think that.

You must be blind. She's aged down so she can grow up with the Turtles and have a reason to hang with them.

A 30 year old woman hanging with Nick's TMNT would make no sense.

I'm pretty sure 2003 April was just 23 also.

Makes sense to me, I never saw April as much older than 25 in that show, and it never seemed "weird" to me that she was friends with teenagers. I'm 24, and I love hanging out with the teens in my tae kwon do class (and the students much older than me, in their 40s, are also fun to be around), and that's how it always felt with April. It's not really like she called them up to chat about nothing or dropped on by for a whatever hang-out day like high school buddies do. But she let them stay at her place when they were in danger, and they did the same for her, or she would drop by for holidays and the like, and given that they have saved her life on numerous occasion I don't see why she would find the fact that she's a few years older than them a good reason NOT to be friends with them. Amusingly, even though older April hypothetically spent less time with the turtles, her friendship with them feels way more real than teen April's does.

I feel like a college student April would totally just hang with the turtles....I don't see how that would be a problem. She'd be that older sister that'd just chill with the turtles.

when I was a teen I hanged out with college students sometimes.

They made the right decision for making her a teen in the Nick series, it would be weird to have her as an adult and wouldn't feel right.

"but she's always been an adult before!"

Well, the turtles have never acted like actual teenagers before. Now that they do, them hanging out with a woman in her 20's would be really weird.

what? why would that be weird? a 20 year old hanging out with teens is not weird at all. 20 year olds are still immature! have you seen how college students act :D

20 year olds still like to have fun.

I was 17 for my freshmen year in college....and I had to hang with college students and they acted like teens.....:ohwell:

and besides that...isn't nick Casey 18? that's technically an adult. (at least in the US it is)

I can't believe I even have to say this...

Who in cripe's name cares if this show or any show based on "fantasy" feels more realistic based on what we as people experience in real life? Whether it's based on who people hang out with, who they talk to, how friendly they are with everybody, or how much they communicate with one another. It's "fantasy", as in not real, and meant to be real. It's a show about mutated turtles that are obsessed with pizza, that are ninjas trained by a rat master trying to stop a bunch of aliens from another dimension. I think the realism aspect was thrown out the window a long time ago. If the show had "realism" to it, April wouldn't even be around the Turtles, because there would be no mutated turtles, and even if so, she be running for her life from them, as well as everyone else in New York.

I keep seeing people on multiple websites saying "I have in my life and I *yadda yadda*." so they should *blah blah blah* in this show too to make it feel more real because..."

Why?

"April should be older because..."

Who cares?

It's fantasy and I can't stand the "they should make it feel more real" ranting and raving. It doesn't matter.

Nothing about this show or franchise needs to feel or be real, because it isn't real. Any issue involving conversation is nothing but nitpicking, and people treat it like it's a travesty and an abomination of television. It's ridiculous.

Uh...yeah. Because it doesn't matter.

I'm saying something doesn't need to be made more real because it's happened to "Us real life people", which is what I'm seeing people whine about, and that makes no sense at all.

People seriously need to stop saying that a cartoon needs to feel more real.

That would be like me watching the Toy Story movies, and then calling up Disney and saying "Yeah, you shouldn't make the toys talk because that would make it feel more real."

I mean seriously, I don't think that's ridiculous to believe that is it?

I think Casey and April are two characters who work at any age, but whose ages have to work with, and can drastically affect, the type and tone of the story.

Teen April works wonderfully in Nick. April and Casey being older/adults is really important for a number of beats in Mirage, the original movie, etc.

For examples where I don't think they've necessarily taken the best approach, see the 4Kids series, where little was made of Casey and April's adult lives, or IDW, where I think things actually could have been immensely simplified by aging them up, and would have better fit the often dire tone.

I do prefer to see the big sister vibe from April rather than the teenage one, as the only constant female influence in their lives I think it works better that she's a little older, a little wiser. I agree with Cipher that it can radically affect the tone, those vulnerable moments where we remember the T in TMNT are often amplified by the adults surrounding them.

I like T in The Tmnt But NM comes first. I guess it's all to one's preferences I like when turtles are vigilantes, most of the time people forget they are a horrible crime against nature. And there's people who take it to far and Make the T give a D to A.

Angel has a completely different attitude than April and one that I imagine would grow grating very quickly if she was used too much. Don't get me wrong, I really like Angel and prefer her more as a teenager than a kid, and I prefer the way she's handled in the IDW comics. Her tough as nails persona is still there, but she's not a constant character like April is. Still, she's included enough to show that she's got a bit more depth to her as well as contribute to the team in her own way. I feel like Angel's got a bit more baggage than April, which is what would make her a little irritating if she was used as the main female protagonist. Her problems would quickly overshadow the Turtle's, which is what I feel like my main beef is with the current, teenage April on Nick.

I kind of prefer her older, in the "big sis" role she usually plays in most versions. I's almost a mother-figure vibe she often has, and I like that, because it's an influence I think works well for the TMNT. They have spent their entire lives not only with no mother, but no female influences at all. April provides a little of both- except in Nick. While I like her well enough, it just doesn't seem as interesting to me.

I'm surprised that some fans don't even like April period, which is surprising given the various versions of her and there has to be one that is at least semi-appealing, even if some aren't as great as others, and that's pretty much the case for the Nick April mostly due to her being a bit more annoying, though I'll have to cope with that being teen instead of adult. This thread seems more appropriate for the Nick section since the IDW/2014 Aprils are clearly not teenaged, and they continue the trend (especially 2014) of having somewhat tied but fresh versions of April. I always see April immune of the "Comic Book Time" figure who matures naturally as the series progresses, and maturing can in turn help not just her life but the Turtles' relations with her.

What if April stays as a teenager

I would hate that so much.

I'd be so happy if Angel turned up in Nick! *_*

but I wanna like April more first....

Maybe Angel is Casey's little sister....

Ok, anyway... April as a teen was proposed in the show that almost got made before 2k3 and probably factored into her design. I love 2k3 but I did find it awkward that April was dressed like Kim Possible under her labcoat.

I don't dislike her, but I mean, she's kinda just there. I'm indifferent.
Agreed. Despite trying hard to make a case for her in her micro-series issue, April has felt seriously underutilized in the IDW title. It actually feels like one of the least distinct versions to me, if not the single least.

Angel's well-done in that series, but she's not a regular character.

I always see April immune of the "Comic Book Time" figure who matures naturally as the series progresses, and maturing can in turn help not just her life but the Turtles' relations with her.
Personally, I don't want to see any version of the TMNT as a whole that's not immune to "comic-book time." New Animated Adventures understandably aside, we've been blessed to have all three major series avoid it (or at least seem like they will, in IDW's case, probably).

so crazy question....how would you guys feel if they got rid of April and put a new character in there with the turtles?? let's say in the next reboot (if there is one)

whether it be a new girl with a totally different attitude or a dude?

She has different personality in every incarnation so why do it?

IDK, give her a different background, maybe even change her race.

:3 or maybe have a boy?

I was just wondering how you guys would feel if they changed April radically. (or not even have April)

if they did.... what kind of person would you like to see fill April's role?

I'm not sure if I would really like that. I mean, I don't really care a whole lot what April looks like, because her purpose to me is to fill an emotional (not romantic) need for the turtles, a motherly role they don't have and to add a sense of maturity and softness to their otherwise violent and rough world. She's smart, is there to help them when they need them, and has a bit of a positive attitude and edge about her so she isn't a pushover when one of them gets overly "teenage emo" and so she can handle some of the more dangerous situations she's thrown into.

That's what April is to me and the role I feel REALLY needs to be filled for a complete, well rounded cast. If another girl was given that role, even with a different name or look, she would feel like an April substitute to me, and when April is changed so drastically from that she likewise feels like some random new girl who I don't like or care about. I don't know if a male could really fill this position as the turtles already have a father figure in Splinter, and given the nature of the TMNT universe he likely would be used as another "buddy", rather than someone mature to help steady their lives (and giving him a big brother role feels like it's encroaching on the turtles' actual brotherhood and I doubt it would go over very well).

Why change April (or not even have her)?

That's like changing to 3 turtle brothers instead of 4. It doesn't make sense.

I mean, they already have. Characters across different versions of the TMNT are rarely the same in anything other than name and maybe a few key traits. Even the Turtles change pretty radically with each new version.

If any changes were done to April it would be Race first most likely. I'd imagine black/African American since that seems to be the default race change before anything else. Not that I'm against it and I agree April and Casey's Age should represent the type of story and tone set for the universe. Only one I haven't seen is April already being a mother even before she meets the Turtles. I would like to see a Casey that starts from the top and gradually falls to the bottom, instead of either the bottom or the middle ground and falling or slightly rising.

I hate change for the sake of change...
And for a boy they have Casey...

I never saw Aprils role as much more as that 'random normal person that met the turtles for the first time'. She represents what the normal person of the real world would react to to meeting mutated turtles and getting caught in the rival ninja gang crossfire. It's after that they decide wether or not she becomes a major character or is just there.

Have then meet Angel first lol. I wonder how different it woulda been if they meet this street tough girl that was headed on the wrong path before the guys set her straight.

I hope they don't keep her a teenager. I mean Nick was assuring there would be a better dynamic of sorts with Nick April (and the other supporting characters) being teenagers, but the only thing that developed so far is the love triangle. Ugh...

As for how these Turtle teenagers can relate to an April or Casey in their 20s, these Turtles have been involved in numerous lethal (or near-lethal) fights; I'm sure the Turtles' viewpoint on life is far more profound than the sheltered, stereotypical middle class teenager who preoccupies themselves with the trivial, social aspects of high school.

And that's one of the main problems of that i have with show. There turtles are exactly that...

I think this is one of those cases where I think there should be a new series where the turtles are not portrayed as 15 year olds, all the time. I'd like to see a new incarnation where they are older, like maybe around 18 or 19. Sort of like the Next Mutation (except portrayed accurately).

I was always open to the possibility of April being in her early 30's, and she has a son, so that way, the Turtles still have April as some sort of adult figure to admire and help them, but the boy to relate to. And Casey, an adult who has a daughter. I just like the idea of kids/young teens interacting with the Turtles, because that's most likely the demographic that watches this stuff. Lone Raph and Cub from 2k3, and Leo's little tea time with the little girl are good examples of how to carry those interactions.

Why is that?

Just my preference. Teenagers are usually written into high school shenanigans and other teenage emotional things and that's fine, its just that I don't care to indulge in that. I like April as a woman in her 20's. Its fine for April to be a teen sometimes in certain versions, but I don't want for it the main representation.
