View Full Version : Do you like all 3 TMNT cartoons, 2 of the 3, one, or none of them?

I enjoy all 3 of the TMNT cartoons because they all offer a drastically different view of the TMNT franchise and I enjoy the characters and episodes of each. While I obviously don't like every single episode (each show has had their share of poor episodes), I can say overall I liked each.

Vote on the poll.

I like 4Kids and the OT, mostly-apathetic towards Nicktoons (and I've seen almost all the current episodes, too).

4Kids I prefer over the OT, though, since 4Kids was better at what it was trying to be than the OT was, and I prefer more serious material overall.

The 4kids series is my favorite. I grew up with it and it still 90% still holds up today.

I am really liking the Nick series so far. There are bad points (like all animated series), but it is my second favorite.

I respect the 1987 series, but it isn't my kind of series. I have no problem with people liking it, but it isn't for me

I'm not really sure which to vote. I don't particularly care for the Nick cartoon at all, but I wouldn't say I dislike ALL of it as there are a few gems here and there sprinkled throughout that capture my fancy. Same goes for the 80's toon, I don't really like it that much, but I respect it for being the first TMNT animated series and I know there are a few hidden elements that will appeal to me. But I do greatly enjoy the 2k3 series and I'm easily able to look over the aspects that annoyed me.

I pretty much love all of them except the Nick show. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate it, but it's just really whatever to me. Personally, there's only a few moments in 2k12 that make it enjoyable for me. Next Mutation lacked substance, but I still love it just for the nostalgic fan-boy feelings.

OT and Nick. 4kids is dull for the most part imo.

- Utrom Shredder (Ew, lame, gross and un-intimidating)
- Casey Jones (this Casey was like a brainless cliche jock as opposed to the loveable psychopath in OT. Even Nick Casey is better)
- Hun
- excessive magic (hate it)
- laser guns, aliens/planetary travel in general (ditto)
- Fast Forward (*groans*)
- disgraceful treatment of OT turtles in Turtles Forever

Have to vote my love to all three. I teeter between the OT and 4Kids as to which is my favorite, but I'd probably say 4Kids. Oddly, while I was initially on the fence with Nick, it has grown on me, and I now eagerly wait for each new episode. And of course, the OT will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart. So, yeah- all three (almost) equally!

2k3 series is the best, I could watch it over and over again. I grew up with the OT but I don't like it as much now but it can still be enjoyable at times. The Nick series has it's moments too but I find myself hating it at times. Don't like the way they turned some of the characters into teenagers, the turtle's personality at times make them unlikeable to me, the Kraang are annoying when they talk and not a fan of CGI either.

The people that don't like 4 kids, is it cause of the more serious tone? Essentially these are all kids shows, but 4kids seemed to be more aimed at teens and possibly adults as well, and got away from the constant jokes and such unlike the two counterparts.

i like the original toon and 4kids toon. i cant stand how they look on the nick series and if i dont like how something looks, it makes it really hard to like the show. they are by far the scrawniest turtles we've ever seen and their faces just look flat out weird the eyes are too round and they really didnt need colored pupils or gaps in their teeth, and i dont like their overall designs those huge wraps around the forearms etc and the way mikey acts and talks like he's 5 years old.

on a happier note, nick mikey is extremely cute and adorable :P
but thats part of the reason i think im too old for the nick series, its just too childish. they look like baby turtles :trazz:

Like I've always said, the Nick TMNT show isn't the "real" Turtles to me, but it's an entertaining, funny show to watch with my daughter. And it's well made.

The Fred Wolf show is unwatchable save for in small amounts when I'm drunk enough and waxing nostalgic. The 4Kids show isn't even that, unless I'm just in the mood to Clockwork Orange punish myself in a chair by watching its horrible Playmates-ized bastardizations of stories I love from the Mirage comics.

Fair enough. While I enjoyed seeing some of these stories from Mirage issues, some were severely watered down.

Real talk? I don't buy that for a second.

While I think Andrew's being a little hard on the 4Kids series -- The creative team obviously had a ton of love for the material, and much of the original content is pretty top-notch, both animation-wise and for a kids' show in general -- there are a lot of irritating elements, in particular much of the Playmates toy placement or watering down of Mirage stories that chafe against the (often overly) serious nature of the show. The older I get, the more I find large portions of it grating. On the other hand, there are a few episodes that, tweaked slightly to get rid of some of the kids' TV-isms, could have come straight out of the comics (I'm thinking of DNA is Thicker Than Water and Milk Run in particular).

I second the Nickelodeon show being the most well-done, though obviously it can't exist in a vacuum from the Fred-Wolf show, which it takes so many cues from.

I love both the Fred Wolf and 4Kids and I could frankly do without the Nick series. The Original I feel is a product of its time it hasn't age well at all and most of my love is just because its my childhood I grew up with it. I have to admit I do love some of the Fred Wolf characters created for the cartoon and toys as well as the designs. Its the main reason the Archie comic and the Konami series of videogames are so beloved and work well They took all the cool stuff and made it kickass. The 2K3 is my favorite of all the Turtle series it was dark it was serious and had some great animation that still holds up today hell to me its a better looking series then the Nick toon. It also wasn't to afraid to do its own thing sometimes it worked out sometimes it didn't (Like the over use of Superheros)

The Nick show I dont hate it but if it wasn't for brand loyalty and the fact that it and Korra are the only action cartoons on tv today I wouldn't bother with it. I cant stand Beast Boy and April damn near ruins the show for me. Not really a fan of the main big threats like Shredder and Kraang. Although this show has made the two best animated versions of Rat King and Slash ever made

CyberCubed

I'm surprised so many people don't like Nick's April? I think she works well in the show and is able to get involved in the Turtles adventures.

Even her personality is more assertive and sarcastic than the others.

I think the Nickelodeon show is technically the most well-made out of the three, but I generally enjoy all 3... even if [in the case of the 80s show] it's because of being so corny. XD

04-02-2014, 09:37 PM
I still like them all, but I find it sad that the popularity of the original is gradually decreasing as time goes on, though that's life as new stuff marches in. I like how each version has its own feel, and before you know it the 4kids and even Nick will get that "product of its time" feeling. OT is nostalgia, funny, episodic, fun, and has that campy old school charm; 4kids is serious, fast-paced, cohesive, raw, and both inspiring and weak; Nick is CGI, a nice blend of past elements, surprising, and still yet to confirm its real meaning. And speaking of Nick April, its a decent trade-off of immaturity for exploration and emotion.

Which is exactly why some of us don't like her. Her wit isn't handled well and a majority of the time she comes off as an ungrateful, know-it-all bitch. And since when has April not been assertive in her other versions?

OT got me into the Turtles, abut now I can hardly tolerate it... I find it really boring, and the animation quality . I really just watch it for Mike and Raph if at all.

2k3 was sometimes lame, and I agree that its episodes that were meant to adapt actual Mirage issues usually fell flat. However many of its original episodes were fantastic. I'm thinking of the Big Brawl and much of season 3, when Hun, Shredder and Karai got really badass, and some of season 4. I think it has great rewatch value, goof character development, and some amazing fight scenes.

Nick is nice to look at, funny and entertaining, but the plots do not seem carefully thought out the way 2k3 was... and I don't like its takes on the characters.

Enjoyed the original as a kid and can get some enjoyment out of it still but lots of the episodes repeat and get old.

Very much enjoyed the 4kids series with exception to season 5 the Ninja Tribunal, some of the Fast forward stuff was fun and didn't mind it although I didn't like it as much as originally same with BTTS was alright had a few good episodes.

I have watched some of the new show cant really get into it has a few episodes I have liked other things I just haven't liked like some of the character desgin for the enemies. I have almost picked up some dvds on occasion but I think I'd rather get a blu ray compilation.

Refractive Reflections

I enjoy the OT the most, I appreciate how the cartoon is humble enough to realize how outlandish the original TMNT concept is by breaking the fourth wall, thus removing a lot or all of any assumed pretentiousness with such a concept, and afterward it builds up its unique charm from there. All of the Turtles' characters are actually enjoyable to be around unlike how Raphael and Michelangelo are depicted in 2K3 and Nick where their personalities are taken to obnoxious/grating levels. The cartoon was able to transition through the light and dark tones rather seamlessly, but of course not every episode was good, yet for the most part the transitions were gradual. The comedy in the middle seasons was excessive at times, but at least with that comedy and lighter tone, the camaraderie atmosphere was more obvious between the Turtles rather than the more distant/aloof or melodrama interactions in some of the other series.

With 2K3, the storywriting and arcs were solid, but the melodrama kills the enjoyment of the series time and time again for me where these scenes become unintentionally laughable. In addition, it seemed to be heading toward excessive and unnecessary darker and darker storywriting, and I just didn't care for the whole Ninja Tribunal season. FF and BTTS were just too jolting of a change and they were "Meh..."

With Nick, well... I enjoy the tone of how they are able to balance the light and dark subjects well, but the show's selective amnesia with its plotlines undermine the growth of many characters over and over again. There's a lot of potential in a few of their episodes (Baxter's Gambit, Follow The Leader, Slash and Destroy, The Gauntlet), but they never really follow through on those opportunities, and therefore I can only enjoy it on a very superficial level, as with their lukewarm loud humor (i.e. the caricature depiction of Nick Mikey). In addition, it still has yet to establish its own unique identity (after 40+ episodes) within the TMNT franchise after peeling away the numerous tributes of the OT, the 80s, other sci-fi/fantasy franchises, etc.; it's leaning too much on nostalgia.

4Kids is my favorite and I enjoy the Nick series as well. As for the original cartoon, I only liked about 10% of the episodes I've seen. I haven't watched the Red Sky seasons (maybe the one before that as well), but consensus seems to be that they're worse than the rest. I might try to continue it at some point, but I think I'd end up abandoning the OT again after too many uninteresting or repetitive episodes in a row.

Grew up with the OT, so I'll always have a special place for it.
I like the Nickelodeon cartoon just a little bit more than 4kids (seasons 6 and 7. ick.), and, while Shredder and Krang bickering all the time and Bebop and Rocksteady always being unpredictable, that isn't enough to hold up a whole show, so I like the other two way more than the OT.
