View Full Version : Pet Peeves

Ooooh...I ran into one of my pet peeves today and now I want to know what other people's pet peeves are!

I was in the drive through at Burgerville getting some fish and chips plus a Mocha perk milkshake when I saw a sign they had put up for the day: "Turky Tuseday $2.00"

Errr...at least they spelled $2.00 right. Seriously though, this is a place of business, this is one of their advertisements. AUGH! Can we say unprofessional?

So I hate mispellings in advertising, what annoys everyone else?

How about when people refer to Turtles as amphibians?

Try being in the middle of writing a chapter and have someone call you to get something for them that is less than 2 feet away.

oooh, when one of my bosses gives us lectures about talking while we're working, then goes and does the exact same thing!! *grumbles* she's got a damn stick up her... er... nose

My mother often lectures me about being responsible. She once did this while her cigarette fell from the ashtray and burnt a hole in the carpet. Yeah, great role model I have.

Oh yes, Enigma! Hubby does that to me all the time! (or he hovers over me, knowing that I'm goofing off on the PC) and nearly pushes me away so he can have his turn. Number one reason why I can't get on at night! "Well, you sit in front of a computer all day, so I think you had enough!" he says.

Hrm... another pet peeve of mine I noticed the other day, is when the clothing stores say they have a sale. So you go there all excited, only to see that the sale prices are not really cheap. Or if it is a sweet deal, they don't have your size or color. ..rrrr...

But then, if hubby goes with me, he finds all kinds of cheap goodies for himself. In fact, even the regular priced stuff on the guys side is cheaper than the girls.

Like, take a simple T-shirt. The girls is just a bit of fabric, with a little bit of print on the front, and they want $12. Then the guys, it's a big, baggy T made with heavyweight cotton, with print on the front AND back, and it's only $9!

And then hubby asks me why I can't find any good deals. :flaming:

My main peeve is people who CAN'T SHUT UP in cinemas. It makes me homocidal.
I can just about cope with rustling and chewing and munching... but talking over the movie.... Or kids acting like @%*!!!
*begins to get agitated* Grahhhhhh!

Another peeve is crisps (Or do you call them chips over there....?) Whoever invented such a noisy food should be stomped on....

Minor peeve: ... people sucking their fingers loudly after using them to eat with....
I do it too, though..... :goofygri:

Speaking of movie theatres, how about when people bring a baby in with them? Then, when the baby starts fussing, do they take it out into the lobby? NOOOO...

Ohhh, there's a work related pet peeve. Parents who let their kids chew on merchandise and then don't buy it. I learned early on to be REALLY careful picking up keychains off the floor.

Ah a last a thread I can really get my teeth into.

People who park their cars on the pavement so you have to walk in the road.

Buses that never turn up.

Taxis drivers that try to kill you on the way to your destination.

Stangers who think they are better qualified to bring up your children.

People who ask you stoopid questions.

When you buy a second hand video and find someone has taped over it.

Being asked for ID when buying an 18 cert DvD.

People who don't pick up after their dogs and allow them to mess on my garden.

Ah, now this is my kinda thread...

People who let their kids run amuck in restaurants *shakes head*

Trying to find dress pants that fit me

People who have to be as noisy as possible while outside after midnight *grumbles*

Customers who say it's nice & cool in the bank where I work when I'm freezing my butt off

Dressing for work (I am *not* a fan of anything but jeans & a t-shirt)

Radio stations that play the same new songs 4 times a day

DJs that don't tell you the title or artist of a new song *grr*

Videos that used to work fine, but now have a picture that jumps (I have several of those)

Running out of room on a blank audio tape when recording a favorite song (same with video)

Oh, there's so many more...

Bill Gates!

How all the websites are cutting back on webspace, then making you pay for more.

How the free email services are doing the same thing.

Pop-up ads! (especially those on FF.net and EZboards)

How a 56K modem only connects at 40k.

Telemarketers and junk/spam mail. I kid you not.. it''s really getting scary. Most of this stuff does go to my Junk Folder, but I can't believe they think Rape and Animal Sex is the latest rage!

And the really cold A/C at work! I agree with a Riph, that's the pits I have to still dress up like it's fall there just to stay warm (or become attached to a sweater).

How the NBC morning news shows obsess over missing children or other missing people ALL the time. The other channels are a little more balanced....

I can totally agree with you there on the webspace thing. Email isn't so much a huge issue with me *yet* (This coming from a person who has over 10 different email address, which only 2 that she actually checks regulary) But pet peeves? Hrm....

Club sleazes

Bullies

Racists

People who talk slow (hey I'm takin' a while to adjust to country ppl k?)

Drunk Drivers

Bad reception on a cool TV show night

People drinking out of the milk carton/Coke bottle

People who lie for no reason

Woman Beaters

The 'teamo supremo' ads *grinds teeth cringing*

That bloody Shakira song!!

Britney Spears

People who say that suicide is cowardly and the people are gutless and have a choice. Those people say that because they have *never* known what it feels like and act like they know.

Really bright and flashy backgrounds behind simulary coloured text on a website.

Power Rangers ('nuff said)

Peas :dead: (*double shudder*)

People who like to push their religions onto me

People behind a desk who are yakking on the phone while I'm waiting to be served and in a hurry

People who talk about you behind your back

Men who are so gutless that they won't fight a girl unless they have at least 10 friends

People who try and change you

Manipulative internet guys

Last minute assignments

Breaking my nails

Rapists

Halfway through a huge download, someone calls and disconnects me :flaming: grrrr!!!

Ignorance

Arrogant ppl

People who nag me >_<

Two certain ppl who poke me to get my attention (I have a bloody name!)

*takes in a deep breath* Well that was about a months rantage pented up that needed to get out. Thanks guys I needed that

Heh heh heh. You think this thread is bad, you should have tried talking to me yesterday. I was Ms. Bundle of Anger. Might be today too. I'm totally stressed out about my work situation.

Here's another peeve:

People who don't answer when I walk up to them and say "May I help you?" No nod, no shake of the head, nothing but ignoring me.

HorseTechie
06-20-2002, 09:43 AM
Hee... tit-for tat, I guess. We all should be more considerate (since, uh, I'm not one who likes to be bothered much by sales floor people if I am 'just looking for something cheap').

Skeletoncrew
06-20-2002, 09:46 AM
Hey, I hate being bothered by sales people too, so I don't like doing it...but I actually got coached recently for not "practicing the 10 foot rule". So now I walk up to everyone who stops by the jewelry counter and spends any time looking. I'll leave people alone immediately if they don't have any questions...but don't leave me standing there! Grrrr...

Loolaa
06-20-2002, 09:59 AM
When I worked in a shop we had to do the 'Can I help you?' thing. I hated it, the customers hated it, so I stopped doing it.

Then I got pulled up shouted at and threatened with the sack. So I had to keep doing it.
*shrugs* One of the reasons I no longer work in retail.

Kali
06-20-2002, 10:03 AM
I would hate doing that. I never want to work in retail, but my friends keep saying that's what I'll have to do. They're retail people, I'm not, how hard is that to understand?!?

Another pet peeve, people who think they know you better than you do, when in fact, they have no clue what you're really like.

enigma-1
06-20-2002, 11:02 AM
Been there, done that.

People are rude even over the phone. I have to takes messages for my parents' business a lot and half the time, I have to resist the urge to hang up on the customer for being rude to me.

HorseTechie
06-20-2002, 02:24 PM
Heh.. yeah, I'm usualy terse with my "No thankyou" when I turn down the floor clerks... but yeah, at least I do say something.

Hubby, he works retail now and he's actually very good with handling the 10 foot rule. Acts all polite and such, even if they seem rude (he also works on the side of town where the African American community is). Then he'll turn away and curse under his breath about the rude ones.

But if he in turn gets treated rudely by a clerk, he'll go straight to the manager and complain. Typical Leo/Raph type for ya there.

Skeletoncrew
06-20-2002, 03:05 PM
I've GOT to get out of retail. Its driving me insane. Well, I must go to work now. Wish me luck.

Own list of pet peeves:

Tourists

Traffic

Movies that make endless sequals just to make more money.

Low brow humor like toilet jokes.

People who think animated movies are always just for kids.

School days that end at 3:29 rather than 3:20.

Really loud bells you hear when the period ends.

Running late for class and then realizing midway your on the wrong staircase.

Having to run up from the first to sixth floor in five minutes.

Having gym class right after lunch. WHY?

My phone ringing on weekends before noon (or any other thing happening to wake me up before noon)

Especially if the person on the other end is just trying to sell me something.

Even more if they hang up whe I finally pick up the phone.

Commercals that go on for too long.

Resterants that get your order wrong, especially if you order a rare hamburger and they serve you one that's burnt.

People who try to force their religion on you (I think someone said that, woops)

People who refuse to express their opinions and will never explain themselves. (Ex: I believe in the death penilty...because)

Those who repeat themselves.

Those who lack a sense of humor.

Those who cannot be serious.

The mere fact that our president has not yet mastered reading.

Trying to pronouce French. (I'm pretty sure it's close to impossable)

Shirley Temple

The very idea that schools around me are installing dress codes.

My computer freezing on me.

Riph Raph
06-21-2002, 07:56 AM
Gah... gym right after lunch? Yuck! Guess I was fortunte since my high school had two lunches & if you had gym & it would've been right after lunch, you went to gym first & took the second lunch. Middle & elementary school I don't remember.

Ahh... sales people. Nothing against them personally. So, it's nothing personal when I do my very best to hide from them.

Another pet peeve:

the telephone. I hate the phone. I'd rather speak like this--typing--or face to face

Tinselcat
06-21-2002, 08:20 AM
i hate it when people are snotty on the phone! you'd think in a nice, small town with a nice, small library they'd have the decency to be civil, but noooooooo...

Kali
06-21-2002, 08:43 AM
I never answer the phone without knowing who it is. We have an answering machine, and screen our calls. The last time I picked up the phone I was almost talked into joining the Army.

There's another pet peeve. Armed Forces recruiters (if been called by every branch) who won't take NO as an answer. (Nothing against military people, it's just not for me.)

Tinselcat
06-21-2002, 08:56 AM
oooooh, but telemarketers are sooo much fun to play with! i got one at school and one of my suitemates just started screaming her head off, and then i started swearing and told the guy i had to go. it was really fun! we got another telemarketer from the same place later that night, and did the same thing! *sighs* ah, what joyful memories...

Oh yeah.. I agree with Riph about the phones. They bug me at times too. I avoided it when I used to work as a pizza delivery. Then I once covered for a Receptionist during her lunch break, and it took me forever to get used to that. It's like I ususally forget the person's name by the time they explain their problem, and lots of times I had to deal with irate customers. I really can't deal with irate customers on the phone, especially if I'm brand spanking new to the company and I don't know squat! (Thank god I moved up to a better position.)

Ahhh...my turn. *cracks knuckles*

People who crack thier knuckles *snicker*

Stupid Drivers

College recruiters

Devry Recruiters who keep interrupting your classes to tell you things you don't give a rat's a-- about, and who keep sending you flyer after packet after brochure.

Military recruiters who do the same thing.

Telemarketers

Answering machines (I hang up unless it's REALLY important)

People who complain when an animated movie has swear words or other kid innappropriate stuff in it when the d--- thing is rated PG or PG13!

People who talk or unwrap candy in movie theaters.

People who kick the back of your chair in theaters, school, etc.

People who don't know how to shut up.

People who won't quit trying to be buddy-buddy with you no matter how hard you try to get rid of them nicely untill you finally blow up at them, only to have them make your life hell later on...

Librarians who don't set computer time limits but kick you off after half an hour anyway.

Little kids in the "why" stage.

Little kids in the "no" stage.

Little kids in the "potty training" stage.

Work.

School.

Having one of your favorite tv shows pre-empted for ANYTHING...

Long president speeches that make you miss your favorite shows.

Missing the last ten minutes of a movie you've just invested an hour and 50 minutes in because the phone rings or your parents come in and turn it off without even asking.

My cd player's headphones staticking and suddenly stopping working...

The radio in my car not working.

Rude customers.

People who come to the cashier/hostess's desk to ask for a straw/drink/fork/napkin/anything else the waitress is responsible for.

People who change thier food orders after ordering and paying with a CREDIT CARD so that you not only have to get your manager, but he/she has to void out the WHOLE order and then go back and refund to the credit card, which takes FOREVER, meanwhile the lobby is filling up with other customers that you can't get to because your register is tied up with the dumba-- that can't make up his MIND!!! *pants for breath*

And putting football/tennis (bloody Wimbledon)/rugby/snooker on tv and cancelling Buffy/The Simpsons or any other programme I love so the sports fans can watch their stupid snooker, or whatever. (Who watches Snooker, anyway?!?!)

Also... my favourite comic books being cancelled that's happened to at least with 7 titles I can think of.

Hehe... I crack my knuckles..... *krack*

People who don't believe in personal hygiene.

Grossly overweight people who use the electric carts our store has for the disabled and elderly.

People who ask me "Do you work here?" when I'm wearing my namebadge, and doing something behind the counter. (I am SO tempted to say "No" and continue working next time that happens.)

HorseTechie
06-25-2002, 11:30 AM
*decides to edge away from Kameko before she snaps*

Another "at work" peeve: having five or so different clients come up to me with an "oh so very important" copy job, that is asking for 400, or 150, or 4 thousand of something that will clearly take a long time to do, and they wanted it by the next day.

So the latter of them is going to end up having to wait, cause I can ONLY print ONE huge ass job at a time!!

Then I find out ther hard way why one shouldn't upload other software on company computers, becuase it ends up messing up the specially designed software on there. So I have to put up with the analysis teasing me and warning me to not mess with the computer again (and so I suffer at work with nothing to do since I can't upload PS 6 and Illus 9 on that PC now).

I thought of another:

Getting a huge a$$ deposit (or two or three) at the drive up 10 minutes before it closes, thendo said deposit *&* count my cash *&* add all my other crap.

When the computers go down in the bank & you have to hold everything to put it in later, then end up with twice as much stuff to do, *then* finding out your checks don't add up right *grr*

I've had two very long days. Our computers went down yesterday at about 10:30am & came up at about the same time today, so for most of the rest of the day we had to do all of yesterday's work *&* today's all at the same time, while doing both the drawer & the tube of the drive up...

*comes in with a new thorn in her side*

... this is no personal attack on anyone, just my own personl opinion on the matter.

But why now, are they making a big deal over the fact there was "under God" in the US pledge of alligence! Damn... like, doesn't the government have better things to concern themselves with than try to make small details "more constitutional".

But no... like hearing/reading those two words in the pledge of the alligence, or the words "In God We Trust" on our currency, is forcing everyone who is not religious to be religious.

Sorry.. but that feels like another attack on the church. Stupid state n church law... well, as long as us religious folks aren't dragged to the lions den for believing in God... I guess I shouldn't complain too much.

But if they really want to change some sayings around, how about "God Bless America"? If you really think about it, that saying is so 'stuck-up'. As my Korean husband pointed out, it feels like us Americans want God to bless us, and ONLY us, out of all the other countries in the world who really need the blessing more. No wonder half the world hates the US. *sai*

Possibly. I have no problem with it. I don't say The Pledge, and haven't for several years. You have a choice whether you say it or not, they don't force you. I just think it doesn't need to be said in school though, they don't need it there.

Kameko
06-27-2002, 04:03 PM
That's another one:

When people who are completely incapable of public speaking try to come over the intercom, interrupting your favorite class, to make you say the pledge, while somehow managing to stumble over every other word and dragging it on for an eternity, and then having you teacher snap at you to finish your work when you just started right before dumba$$ came over the intercom, when he's the one who said "stand up, we have to say the pledge" in the first place.

And there's another one: Announcements being made over the intercom in a high school. HELLO? Who came up with that one? No teenagers ever shut up long enough to here the bloody announcements anyway, and naturally they don't post the d-mn things in the hallway or anywhere where you can find them, so you end up not finding out about important things your senior year until it's too bloody late! Argh!!!

*pants for breath* I'm ok, now, really.

Loolaa

Oh yes.. have I mentioned before how much my Leo streak comes out when it's the sucky time of the month? Everything that seems much too liberal really peeves me off.

Oh.. but then hubby bought this used DVD last night called New Port South. It's a weird thriller where the high school students start rebelling against their school, cause they think it's becoming way too institutionalized (like a prison or something). Kinda like the Faculty, with a more realistic twist to it.

Samantha
06-28-2002, 04:09 PM
Personally I think they should take out the "under God" line in the pledge. *shuffles feet as everyone in the thread glares at her* I remember when I was in Kindergarden in this private school where they DID force you to say the pledge and at the time I was an athiest. I always felt very uncomfortable when it came to that line. Today I do believe in God, but I can still easily imagine how athiest's must feel. It IS just like saying "under Zeus" or "under some other God" (in my opinion).

Reason #122 why high school sucks. You are technically supposed to say the pledge. Of course if you just stay seated you don't really get in trouble, but my global studies teacher (whom I sadly had year round) gave all the seated kids nasty looks. Sorta makes things a bit, aggrivating.

Skeletoncrew

Samantha, I agree with you completely. I was also an atheist when I was younger. I REALLY resented being forced to say "under God", and I usually didn't. Religion isn't something that should be shoved down the throats of the young. Of course, I also think this whole issue is a non-issue. It just doesn't deserve all the effort and attention its getting. (In the grand scheme of things, the Pledge of Allegience just isn't that important.)

I've never been religious, being brought up by athiest parents (though I was christened...!) so I can imagine some kids feeling uncomfortable. I felt uncomfortable having to say prayers in assembley and lunchtime.

I think the keyword is 'choice'. If you're religious you should be able to say it, if you're not, you shouldn't have to.

Well... now i got something that tops off all things ******.

*doesn't know whether to tear apart Murphy's Law, or punk ass, vandalizing kids*

Hubby called me this morning, with the news that his car had been broken into and his Kenwood CD playing radio was stolen! It was like during the night, right here in the aprtment complex. Is no place sacred to us anymore?

Damn... but that's not the endof it. Since I'm the one with the snazzy car and the accident prone tendancies, I have full coverage on the auto insurance. But just drives an ol Ford Taurus and considers himself a good driver, so he decided to go with the basic plan... with no comprehensive.

Sooooo.... he's gotta pay for the busted window and live with the lost of his stereo! Gah! O course, he called the cops, but I mean.,.. it's a stolen radio. Big deal... compared to grand theft auto, drug dealers and homicidal maniacs. Rrr.....

Like I said... I reeeeeeeeeally hate Murphy's Law. :flaming:

Um, I must agree with HT. This political correctness thing that The US has gotten into is getting WAY out of hand.

The United States of America was founded during a time when religion was very important to the people. They were so worried that this blooming country would collapse, so they asked for God's blessings. All countries do that, no matter if their God is Zeus, Allah, Buddah, Mother Earth or Gaia (I think those are right...)

I say, Do the pledge of allegiance, but if you want to put something in its place, no one says you have to say it out loud. Even a quiet pledge is still a good pledge....

Yay! I do not stand alone. ;)

Well... at least that little bit made me feel better for a moment. But our car robbery incident... that's actually worse that first thought. Hubby later realized the bastards also stole his tool box, his new fishing poles (he pay a pretty penny for in Korea) and fishing tackle, a couple of backpacks, his pack of cigs and lighter, and even the cup/CD holder thing you put on the hump in the front!

The good side to this... he had taken his CDs, his Oakley sunglasses, and his bag full of important papers inside that night. And they didn't steal *everything*... they left behind his Korean bible, the atlas, the junky stuff, and his broken fishing pole and the fishing 'floaters'.

*mutters* Poor guy felt like he been raped! Stealing one's fishing equipment and tools is like stealing one's sword (in ninja terms). At least they didn't go the full nine yards and steals the damn car too. *gonna call the insurance company to see ift those loses are covered under renter's insurance* And I'm gonna take my leather saddle out of my truck and insist my parents hold onto it again. (got no room for it in my apartment)

I/We never had aything stolen from us like this. :(

Loolaa
07-02-2002, 11:15 AM
Oh man. I'm really sorry... it's awful when something like that happens.

We had our car stolen about 8 months ago, and though it's a crappy thing we still needed it to get from a to b, and we couldn't afford to buy another one. (I mean that car itself was as cheap as they come, being a bargain at £125)
We got it back, but it's never been the same, and then we were totally paranoid and got security devices that cost more than the car itself... simply because we couldn't afford another. We even kept the bathroom light on at night in the hope that the light on the car would make any theives more reluctant to steal it. It's sad really.
We never had anything of value in the car to steal, fortunately, but I can imagine how gutted I'd feel if something important to me had been taken.

We're getting another car soon, and we're really fretting about it's security on the street as we don't have a garage. It's horrible, isn't it. :(

Here's one: SUMMER. Especally summer in 90 degree weather. Especially if during the course of that 90 degree day you spent it outdoors wating around for your friends to get together a barbacue. ESPECIALLY if the orignal plan involved going swimming at the pool afterwards and when you get there (dressed in a long shirt and loose long jeans over your bathing suit) find out the pool is really on the other side of the park so you'll have to sit there directly in the sun, dressed like it's October. Grrrrrr......

How about this? Stores that have "Help Wanted" signs up, but then when you go to ask, they don't have any openings. If you don't have any jobs available TAKE THE DAMN SIGNS DOWN!!!

Okay, I'm better.

I have a friend like that. She's cute, but she should learn to dress for her body type. At least she didn't wear the bikini in public. She tried to get me to buy one once, and although I seem to have the body type for it, I still wouldn't be caught dead in one.

 Yeah... I mean, no offense either, but sometimes I can't help but think the same way. My husband (being from a 'skinny' country, as he puts it) is more appalled by those he'll see on occasion at the apartment's pool right next to our porch.

My same problem, I need to tone up. My "Eating Is NOT a Hobby" diet is working well enough, but I should exercise more outside of long walks.

I do own a bikini, but I got it at a flea market and have never worn it outside of trying it on in my bedroom. It's too small. :goofygri:

My thoughts on children in stores can be summed up with a simple phrase. I was in Walmart and three rows over a kid started wailing while the mother ignored him/her/it. I turned back to pay for my stuff, and the walmart cashier looked at me, grinned and said.

"They can't make that noise underwater."

No Joke! I nearly died I laughed so hard. Try thinking that next time you get a caterwauler in the mall....

my pet peeves: annoying people, people who bugs me, heat (it's freakin' hot in toronto and we constantly get all those smog alerts and all that freakin' CO3 because of all the industries (especially from the states and all factories outside of toronto and in toronto), people who are trying to make a difference in society by taking it out of society, the perverted people who hang around in alleys and on street corners and many many more!!!
