Comic-Con Pictures

As I believe you all know by now, there was quite a bit of TMNT stuff to be seen this year. It was quite fun to see it all. I can give some more specific details later.

~That is the box in which a Limited Edition Leonardo statue resides. It's a raffle prize offered by Playmates, and the box has been signed and sketched upon by Peter Laird, Michael Dooney, Jim Lawson, A.C. Farley, Dan Berger, Eric Talbot...did I forget anyone?

The TV console next to it was set up with the new TMNT game for PS2 which my daughter played for like two hours. No one dared take the controller away from her. (FYI, that's her and I seated in the front here. http://www.splunkyard.com/gallery/Roseangelos-Pictures-2003/add)

:lol: They do, they do. Makes me wish I'd dyed my beard black and bleached my mustache when I went to meet Hulk Hogan last year. Of course, I didn't get to meet him anyway, so the whole exercise would have been for naught anyway.

It's funny cuz now my girlfriend is in a doo rag phase. She wears one constantly.

But yeah only Aunt Jemima, Kevin Eastman and Hulk Hogan actually look good wearing doo rags. :P

~Well, on the theory that it's actually easier to beg forgiveness than get permission, here is the re-posting of my 2003 SanD Comic Con Report.
(note to TerranigmaFreak- sometimes the Con is in mid- July, sometimes August)

~Hi All--
This is a "quickie" cuz I was only there for one day this year, but as brief as it was, I had a great time.
Got in late to the hotel on Friday night, with two kids in tow. We had done Disneyland the two previous days, and the "45 minute" drive from Hollywood to SanD took three hours....gasp.....
We rode the groovy open air double-decker shuttle bus down to the convention center to get our badges and I found that I couldn't get any money out of the ATM.
Panic.
I have since concluded that it was that one ATM machine, cuz the next day everything worked fine...but jeez, I spent one very stressful night.

The upshot was I was stressed enough that night that when Rose and Leo, and Brina and everyone else downstairs called at midnight to makes sure I was alive, only then did it occur to me that *other* people might be wondering where I was. Sorry everyone-- momentary loss of all brain function. Wondering what I was going to do all weekend with NO MONEY does that to me....

So at midnight Tokka and Mikey came up briefly. Tokka had a lovely blue rose to give me.....awwww.....
( It even survived the ride home.....wow....)

Y'know, its kinda weird to have talked with someone for what-- four years? on-line and when you finally get to meet them face to face you're in yer bathrobe......So much for my mystique ;o).....

So, to cut to the chase they have expanded the convention hall to *double* the size it was two years ago when I was there last and by noon you could scarcely walk through the place--it was that crowded-- *that* many more people attending than have in the past. I never even found the Froud booth, but then I ended up on a Quest with my 7-year old to find *something* Tomb Raider related-- *anything*-- since we had missed Angelina Jolie's signing...
If you haven't been to the SanDiego Comic Con its a little hard to describe. Rows and rows of displays and booths, of *everything* pop culture related-- from huge pavillions with
life sized statues of mounted Ring Wraiths and Gollum to countless toy displays, videos, books, art, gaming, T-shirts, artists signing fans' stuff and drawing sketches ....no that doesn't even begin to describe the hugeness of it all.
Anyway first stop was the Playmates Toys booth because Michael Dooney was scheduled to be there. They had rows and rows of new turtle toys on display, none for sale though, and the new TMNT video game for PS2 set up... So while Kim/Leo and I chatted with Michael Dooney, Tasha (the 7-year old) played the Turtles game for hours. >;o) No one would take the controller away from the cute little kid even though the sign said "ten minute limit". Hey, there were *two* controllers....
I played for a while too-- really a hoot. Except Raphael seems to run like a rampaging ape....heh.....

Dooney talked a little bit about the new Tales of the TMNT book to be published by Mirage which will fill in some of the details missing from those years in the Turtles' lives between Vol. 3-- the color Mirage books-- and the current B&W one Laird and Lawson are doing. He said that he is going to be working on that, but that he hasn't started yet. The stories are being drafted, though. And yes, we will get an an elaboration on that conflict between Leonardo and Cha Ocho. ;oD!!

Then on to the DreamWave booth for a David LeSean signing. He said he was contracted for twelve issues so far, so we have at least a year of his awesome penciling work. He also mentioned that while they plan is to stick pretty close to the cartoon for the first four (or five?) issues, after that they will be taking the storyline off in their own directions-- yay! Can't wait to see where it goes after all that wonderful creativity with #2 we saw.

Next meet up was at the Fleer cards booth where they were giving away cards and the artist (whose name now escapes me) was signing, and we ran into Mr. Bus! No, not a *bus* bus, but one time TMNT-L member. I'm sure some of you remember him.
And whoever took that picture of me in Tokka's Donnie helmet-- I want a copy!

We tried to meet up at the Heavy Metal booth, the only place some of us caught up with Dawnatello to get pictures with all of us with Kevin. But between smoke breaks, and potty breaks, and I-don't know-where-so-and-so-went-now breaks, we never all quite got to the same place at the same time--alas, no photo op there...
Because of the Masquerade party on Saturday night, there were a lot of costumed people on the exhibit room floor. Tasha is convinced that the Batman she met and had her picture taken with was the *real* Batman, that is, George Clooney. I have no idea where my son went for most of the day, but I was grateful to have found him by the time we had to go home...;o)

I missed the Masquerade Ball/Contest but I understand there was a wonderful performance by a group of LotR costumed folks (someone could fill in this part maybe?) I did however catch about 15,000 strange people --men and women of all ages and levels of mobility-- *running* through the streets of the GasLamp District dressed in red dresses, pearls, and jangling tin cups full of coins. We never found out what the hell they were doing, but they really messed up the traffic flow for about an hour.

Sunday morning we had our traditional "posse" meeting with Kevin, chatted for a while, and
took some more pictures ( which can be viewed at Roseangelo's site).
And all too soon we were packing up and hittin' the long road home.

What was so great was how much more Turtle-related stuff there was this year with all the new comics and the cartoon and toys. For years there has not been anyone attending from Mirage, or any Turtle industry --except for Kevin Eastman and he has been there only in his capacity as the publisher of Heavy Metal.
For anyone considering venturing out to the San Diego Comic Book Convention next year, let me remind you that 2004 will be the TMNT's 20th anniversary....could be some really cool stuff happening next year......

Yes, same here! Gnadding four-figure rent takes up three quarters of my monthly income.

Though I'm only a 6 hour drive away, its the hotels that would kill my delicate finances, with two other people to feed, as well.
Plus my poor little Golf doesn't get help from Fairy dust like GW's does... she has a bumper sticker on hers that says "powered by fairies", or something like that... I've always entertained the idea of making fake Ninja Turtle handprints on the back of my car and under them, writing "Turtle Powered!"

Gah. I used to get in free to the Cons on pro status, but I haven't done much in the comics/game graphics field in the last two years, so I'd have to pay to get in.

Maybe next year, we'll see.

Thanks for relaying that, GW, was looking around for others to give a Con report, though I heard quite a detailed one from "Leo" (On the Technodrome she's registered as "Leo Zenryo" but hasn't posted yet) when I pikced her up from the airport.

But I am jealous, Tokka made HER a Leo portrait and not anything for meeeee! And he gave YOU a rose!? Well, I guess you just had to have attended the Con to be the recipient of such gifts. *snivvels in self pity* :tcouch:

Anyway, sounds like it was a blast! I'm thinking, should we petition the Con people to get recognition for the TMNT's 20th anniversary next year, so that people can submit work to the Con book? Not only that, but it's also Usagi Yojimbo's 20th anniversary next year.

Heck yeah. The TMNT were a huge impact on the comics/multimedia world in the late 80s-early 90s, and as much as so many other comic publishers don't want to admit it, the TMNT set the pace for that corner of the industry. They deserve recognition, even if Peter doesn't participate much in Con business, if at all, and Kevin's there only for Heavy Metal... still was nice to hear that Dooney was there, and there WAS more TMNT presence than the usual nominal merch. at the dealers' booths.

And yeah... I hate drugs and drug dealers and think they're the f*cking scum of the earth and that 99% of them just need to die so I can breathe their air... ask GW about it, she's spoken with me at length. But they DO have it a lot easier than we movers do. In fact, movers lead SUCH crappy lives, many of them resort to being drug dealers just to make ends meet. Many of them also get hooked on pills, smack, and crack to deal with the constant pain of nagging back aches, knee pain, broken toes, torn ligaments, hernias, herniated discs... NONE of which anyone except people in "the office" can afford to get fixed. When you're lucky to make 10 or 12 bucks an hour, taking a day off or going to a doctor isn't an option anymore, especially for guys that have wives and kids. So while I think they're generally lowlifes, I can see both why they resort to dealing drugs and why they abuse it themselves.

Still probably better off dead, either way. I'm young, I have an excuse: I haven't been to college yet. Anyone who stays in this business more than 5 years is honestly too f*cking stupid to do anything else.
