I'm surprised when I searched this up and this was no topic asking this, but I'm blind and there really is, let me know.
But what is you're favorite version of the turtles? Is the Mirage turtles, the IDW turtles, the Archie comics turtles, the Image comics turtles, the 1987 turtles, the 1990's trilogy turtles, the 2007 film turtles, the 2003 turtles, or the 2012 turtles? (if I'm missing any let me know)
While I haven't read any of the comics (I know I know) My favorite version of the turtles has to be the 2012 turtles, the show just does (almost) everything right. The 1987 series suffered from being too childish and silly, the 2003 series suffered from bad music, Splinter's voice actor (sorry), and other kind of stuff, the 2012 series is finally an show that does a lot of things right. It's fun, it's funny, it's entertaining, the turtles are cooler than they've ever been, the voice acting is great, the stories are great, the show is just so awesome and I hope it goes on for a long time.
So what is you're favorite version of the turtles?

Have not read the comics either but want to.
My favorite is 2k3.
It suffered from bad music? The theme song is corny but its such an irrelevant complaint when is has nothing to do with anything.

Well, I haven't read the comics too. But I heard it's very dark and great. (We just don't have stores that sells comic books in my country. It's pretty lame)
The first TMNT that got me into the fandom was the 2007 movie. It was the entire reason I became a fan and it was the best for me. I watched the other series but it just didn't strike right. (the 2003 I liked a bit. Especially SAINW) But when I found out about the 2012 series, I suddenly realized that the 2007 film is in danger of being overthrown in it's '#1 position'. The new series is just so cool and funny and serious at the same time. It blended all these elements perfectly! I agree with what fridaynightdestination said, the 1987 focused on being funny. The 2003 focused on the seriousness and the fighting scenes, the 2007 focused on those stupid 13 monsters that when I looked back on it, just doesn't make any sense. But 2012 just nailed it! I love the new voice actors, Jason Biggs, Sean Astin, Rob Paulsen, and Greg Cipes. I like the animation and action scenes as well, AND the comedy! I always ended up laughing my butt off of some of the funnier scenes.
This is just my own opinion so no hard feelings or anything guys! :tsmile:

The time it took you to be negative, and scold someone who is new and may not know that ...
Why not just answer his question instead of being a snobby hall monitor?
Because of all the "didn't know any better" threads this and "Which Turtle's Your Favorite?" and "Who'd Win In A Fight?" are the MOST over done.
A few seconds with the search function would be a good bet for a thread this generic.
In fact here's one with a poll:

There are tons of versions of this thread, just worded differently.
How were they worded? With the correct "your"?
Addendum: That's my only problem with this thread; not that it's a duplicate.
For the record, mine's the original Mirage, because they most resemble real, fleshed-out characters rather than playing too much into their stereotypes (after they stop being grim-'n'-gritty ninja pastiches, obviously).
But it's ok, defend your guy Powder, the snobby elitists on these boards.
Wait, what if you just hate everybody though?
The Next Mutation . How you gonna forget that? But you covered the majority .
People don't forget it.
They choose to pretend it never existed.

The 2003 TMNT are the best imo. I loved the serious tone of it, liked the music in it, animation was great, had the best character designs of the three cartoon series and it had the best action scenes. The FW 80's TMNT is the show I grew up with but when I watch it now I find it boring but I still do find it funny at times. The Nick series is decent but I don't like the CGI animation, the turtles look too kiddy looking and they look like playdough. The human characters look weird, not a fan of April either. It has some great action scenes though and I laughed a few times. Can't stand Nick Mikey and his voice when Nick Leo talks I can't stop thinking about the pie f*cker. Nick Splinter is the most skilled and badass of the three series though. Next Mutation is probably the worst incarnation of the TMNT. I've been watching a few Next Mutation episodes recently and find them a bit painful to watch, too many silly sound effects, it's just too stupid it even makes the FW series look serious.

The 2003 Turtles are my favorite version of the Turtles.
I wonder if it'd be worth having a stickied mega-thread with a poll to try to avoid these repeats in the future?
Anyway - my vote is always for Mirage. The '87 cartoon was my "gateway drug", then I got truly hooked on the Archie comic thanks to its increasing depth as the series went on. I bought a random Mirage issue somewhere along the line at a local comic shop - I think it was Matt Howarth's crazy fill-in for issue 41 - then got curious enough about the original series to order the colour paperback collections on eBay when I was in high school. My mind exploded, I fell in love, and then made it my mission snap up every individual Mirage issue I could find.
I've got a lot of love for the other versions over the years - the 2003 and 2012 cartoons, the 1990 movie and the current IDW comic specifically. But Eastman, Laird and the Mirage crew did it first and did it best.

2k12 and the OT are my favorite as far as cartoons go and I really enjoy the IDW series. If I had to pick a definitive favorite though I'd pick 2k12.

Buuut, the Nick cartoon is quickly becoming a strong second, if not a tie.

The Mirage comic is my favorite I have been reading that book since I was maybe eight years old I went from Dr.Seuss to Dinosaur books to the Archie comic to a tale of revenge and murder and time traveling girls with huge tits. That comic opened a whole new world for me and got me into more comics and made me a comic collector for life.
I also love the 2003, Archie, the Konami classic games, and the first movie there also some of my favorites don't love them as much as the Mirage but close enough. Fred Wolf Cartoon is more of a guilty pleasure and is really only loved because of the memories of my childhood.

These guys introduced me to TMNT, which I absolutely loved. I grew up with them as a child (I was born in 1996 but had VHS tapes of the series, as well as my Uncle's old Playmates toys)

These guys made me fall in love with TMNT and inspired me to start collecting the toys. I had always loved the turtles, but this show is really what started the obsession.

But i've recently been reading these comics, and I have to say that I love them tons. Great, great books.
http://www.badhaven.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/tmnt.jpg
I love all three of them for different reasons, but they all seem like the Turtles to me. I never really liked the 2K3 show and it really wasn't popular where I'm from, so maybe that had something to do with it. I can't pick just one favourite from the list that I gave, they're all great to me. If I wanna see the Turtles crack same lame ass jokes with great synthesized music, I'll put on the '87 FW series. If I wanna watch the turtles make some pretty funny jokes with some kickass action sequences, I'll watch the 2012 Nickelodeon show. But if I wanna see the turtles get all bloody and kill people.. I'll read the Mirage comics. They're all great. I love these green guys.

I just want to break topic for a moment and say I'm really glad to see new fans discovering the Mirage books. This never would have happened before Nick and IDW came onto the scene.
I don't know how far along you are, but eventually they start to move out of the kickass bloody action phase into something more somber and strange, and I promise it's just as good (better. It's better).

* Mirage/Image: The only one I can look at and not feel like I have to apologize for looking at to others (and myself).
* Fred Wolf: Actually watchable in small amounts, with the correct amount of alcohol. Strictly a nostalgia fix when I have some time to kill, which isn't often. I'd rather watch some arthouse film I've never heard of than watch some mind numbing crap about Shredder trying to take over the world or "Let's get tha toitles, youse guys!" fare.
* Archie: It's got some warts, and is largely colored by the taint of Fred Wolf, but it's it's own thing and I appreciate it, moreso now than even when I was a kid.
* The films: First one is watchable, largely. Not the second one. Third one is semi-watchable if I ignore the camp and lame sight gags. Fourth one I have... trouble viewing as a movie at all, but it succeeds in being exactly what it set out to be (how's that for being diplomatic?).
* NT:TNM: Unwatchable. I don't know how I was able to watch it when it was on the air. I'm not even sure what was my excuse... I was like 17, 18 when it came out. No excuse.
* 4Kids: Unwatchable, even less so than the Fred Wolf show to me. Not even with alcohol (I've tried). What some people call adaptations (some people even throw in the word "faithful," which makes my skin crawl) of Mirage material I call horrible, children and toy-driven painful to watch bastardizations of such.
* Nick: It's not the "true" TMNT to me, nor the "ideal" TMNT, but it's entertaining to watch. My daughter and I have always enjoyed watching it.
* IDW Comics: Began with a lot of potential, and it's always well written, but a lot of the limitations imposed by Nick really hurt what otherwise should be the "Big Brother" juxtaposed against the Nickelodeon show, which is for little kids.
Short answer: Mirage, the source material.

We're on pretty much the same boat with most versions of the property. What's kept me from getting fully into or endorsing the IDW series, though, is less its visible restrictions, and more the bolded portion above, which I don't agree with on a regular basis.

The comic itself is well written, its just there isn't much time for the characters to breathe or develop. But I guess with a 22 page comic you wouldn't expect them to focus on anything other than the plot.
We need another round of micro's for the Turtles.
I've liked the first movie the most of any turtles incarnation, but I admit, the Nick series is closing fast.
I'm not big on some things they've done, but the writing is well done and most of the new twists they've done I've found refreshing.

I was hesitant at first...but the new NICK show has fast become my favorite. I love the fight animations, their 'teenage' dynamic, and even the not so subtle anime touches they inject into their comedy.
while the original cartoon still holds a very special place in my childhood memories, its hard to see the new NICK show, and not think that its improved upon the formula in a very strong way.
Its very possible that the new grit and aesthetic of the 2014 film may eventually make its way to the top of my list, but I reserve that judgement until Aug.

I haven't read all of the Mirage comics, so I feel they should be on hold for now in ranking of my favorites. Working on reading the Ultimate Collection 1-4 right now to refresh some issues and catch the ones I missed. Of course, there's more to go after that too.
I will say that the colored bandannas are an overall plus for me. There's a lot of points in the Mirage comics I'm not sure who's supposed to be speaking other than Leo since I can usually see his scabbards. But Raph vs Mike and sometimes even Don if he's not got the bo visible, I have to do a little referencing the next panels or back a panel to make sure who's who.

2# 2012 tmnt: nice blend of every tmnt incarnation i've watched.
3# 2014 movie tmnt: they look bad ass.
4: faithful to the comics in some ways, love the seriousness and tone. i questioned fast forward and back to the sewers...

While I'm a big fan of Mirage Volume 1, I just have more fun with the 1990 film. If Donatello's intelligence had been properly displayed, that film would be my hands-down favorite. I've also grown quite fond of the Nick series by watching with my daughter.

Visually - Bay's 2014 Ninja Turtles
Characterization - Barron's 1990 TMNT
Humor: Nick Toon
Atmosphere: Barron's 1990 TMNT
Shredder: Barron's 1990 TMNT
Foot Clan: Mirage
Evil Utroms: Nick Toon
Origin: '87 OT
Casey Jones: Barron's 1990 TMNT
April O'Neil: '87 OT
Baxter Stockman: 2k3 Toon
Henchmen: '87 OT
I agree with this almost entirely. Visually the new shredder just looks more menacing than I've ever seen him and I love the whole look of the turtles. They actually look like mutants. As for humor? The nick series is brilliant lol. Atmosphere wise? The first film, I haven't seen the new one yet. But I'm sure people like you and I will walk into that theatre with giant smiles on our faces, over flowing with excitement like when we were 6 years old with pizzas on our laps ready to enjoy the ride!

I feel like the first 5 episode of the '87 toon, totally legit. The turtles were actually pretty cool, bad ass even, while being comedic. Just not near as dark, and gritty as the '84 Mirage turtles. Plus it organically spawned the first batch of iconic toys that were based on both the source material, and the cartoon.
I still think the first five episodes of the Fred Wolf show form probably be the best animated TMNT experience to date.
It's not Mirage, but you can see it wearing its comic influence a bit more on its sleeve, and it's a really excellent, well-balanced translation into a Saturday morning cartoon. It would've been really interesting to see it continue that sort of tone with more loose comic adaptations, rather than the repetitive toy-shilling it fell into (though I still have some affection for its most toy-shillingest moments).

The problem is if it stayed like it was in Season 1, I imagine Shredder/Krang would be defeated for good very quickly. There would have been no silly plots of Shredder/Krang coming up with random cartoony schemes, it would have been strictly about bringing the Technodrome back to Earth for one final attack.
Maybe if the original toon was only 26-30 episodes tops it could have worked like that.

I agree. They catch a lot of flack from these fan boy "purists" but honestly this is the first look of the turtles in some time that has actual balls, and vision. It's not disrespectful to how they should look either. It makes them fresh, and unique. I like the size, the musculature, and turtles on steroids abilities they're giving them to ramp up the ninja action.
Them being bigger than humans (but not to a ridiculous extent) makes more sense in them being MUTANTS. Why do only the bad guy mutants in the franchise get to be so much bigger than the turtles when they mutate?
The new designs makes them a little more edgy to me by doing this, which harkens back to the Mirage source when the turtles then were edgy, and different.
I also like the faces. Hell, they should look pretty freaky at first. The point of the turtles look is horrific mutation. Once you get to know their characters as brothers, their humor, their love ... it breaks down the freakish vibe, and they become cute. They win you over, like the turtles themselves are trying to do to society. It's an interesting thematic dichotomy when they are more freakish on the surface, yet so lovable in character.
The nostrils make sense, turtles have them. Deal with it. The lips? Well all due respect to the '90 film aside, the Henson puppets hold up well even today. Just as there is misfiring audio with the puppets in 1990, it makes more sense for them to talk, and articulate with lips. It removes a cartoonish like element to their facial structures with the big puffy beaks, sans nostrils or lips.
The turtles develop more human hands, feet, and body structure when they mutate into giant, humanoid turtles. Why couldn't they develop some lips as well? Whiny purists arguments over this make no damn sense.
I definitely think the '90 film given the grainy film they used, the darkness of the sets, the garbage, the rain, and the fact the '90 film was more heavily rooted in the Mirage source ... that atmosphere will always be the darkest, and grittiest for sure.
The new film definitely even though filmed in digital, even with Bay's production team style of crisp colors, lines, and even day light shots. There is a sense I get where there will be a lot of night time shots with the turtles. The movie seemed to have some atmosphere even from the trailers. Like seeing Leo on the water tower in the dark, with steam passing him by. Or the lighting on him when he lands no the building edge.
I'm not concerned at all with this new film not having atmosphere. SOTO, TMNT didn't have atmosphere, and they payed the price. At least the III one definitely had that.
You know what, I think your ass should be banned. This post is the exact kind of crap that got half the 2014 TMNT movie talk shut down. Why should you be allowed to come over in this section and start flaming with remarks like "Fan boy purists!" Really, can't you just say you like something without tearing something else down and trying to start yet another flame war?

Wow, I didn't know about that (since I had the guy on "Ignore List" which hides his posts). But after reading that post, well, Warhorse took the words straight out of my mouth. And I don't want to start a flame war/fight and get this thread locked as well.
If people truly look forward to the film, then that's fine. But don't get on some 'high & mighty' pedestal about it and think that you are 'better than thou' because you look forward to the upcoming Michael Bay production.
If you are truly a grown up, then it is simple. Just talk about what you like about it, or what you don't like about it, and that's it.
There's a difference between 'disagreeing with folks' and 'acting like a creep'.

My favorite is 2k3.

Music accounts for 1/3 of the experience. It's a legit complaint. Music can add, change, or greatly affect the feel of what is being shown. You can convey an entire story with just music and visuals alone. Many short films animated or otherwise rely on this alone.
As for my favorite incarnation the IDW and Mirage comics are equally good.

So true about the music. One of my most favorite action scenes in a comic book movie is when Hitgirl tries to rescue Big Daddy and Kickass in Kick Ass, and I think it was such an epic scene because of the music used during it.
In the TMNT, my favorite bits of music, first and foremost would be the Turtle's debut in the 1990 movie. I also love the instrumental version at the end credits in Nick toon, and I thought the score in The Good, The Bad and Casey Jones that was used during the subway chase scene was quite epic, for a 30 minute kids cartoon.

I'd have to say my current favorite show is the Nick Toon. I absolutely love it and it's what sparked my interest in going back and collecting vintage stuff. I'm really enjoying the IDW book as well.
I wish I could say I've seen the 2k3 show, but unfortunately I've only seen an episode or two and really wish they'd re-release it. I have a feeling that would compete with the Nick show as my favorite.
Of course I'll always have a soft spot for the original toon and the Mirage/Archie comics. But my favorite has to be Nick's version. :D

Humor, scenario, characters...

I enjoy most versions of the turtles. Loved Mirage growing up, 87 was comfort food, 2k3 could be astonishingly good, k7 had my favorite raph version, nick/IDW are fresh and enjoyable, and I am looking forward to the movie. No version was without flaws, but nothing so off putting that I felt rejection for it. There are not many fandoms that I feel that way about.

Mirage is my absolute favorite. Hands down. However, I enjoy the Nicktoon, 2K3 (before Fast Forward, that is) and the 1990 movie a lot.
Lagging a bit behind those, I also liked the 2007 movie, despite its flaws. I liked the monsters, Winters, and the way Raph and Leo are depicted. The OT appeals mainly to my nostalgia for its wackiness at this point. I feel like the first few episodes are good, but beyond that, I think Nick takes what was great and fun about it and makes a smarter, more compelling show. I'll have to see how I feel about IDW as I catch up on older arcs and continue to read the newer issues to see where it stands in the ranking. It seems fun, if nothing else, and I'm okay with that.

What do you mean "some arthouse film"? Aren't all films art?
