View Full Version : The scroll on Eric Sachs' wall...

So I was scanning the trailer frame by frame, searching for things to speculate about...and a closer inspection of the scroll on Eric Sachs' wall yielded the following find...

http://i.imgur.com/VLq6hab.jpg?1

If it is what I suspect they are...then this all feels very familiar...Kappa from TMNT III anybody?

I know that the BLUE DOOR script was heading in this direction, and they've since written and shot another script entirely, SO this could just be a scroll used for background artwork they have NO intention on focusing on, or ...

- this could be the turtles ancestors? I don't hate the idea...but its not my first choice.

As well as what look like little men about the same size as Splinter is said to be in this movie fighting with/against the Turtle beings.

EDIT: I just noticed one of the Utroms in the red square is holding a sword.

Any chance of getting other areas of it to the same size/quality?

It's possible this scroll depicts a prophesy instead of an actual event. I think it's more likely depicting a previous attack on earth by Krang, but I'm not ruling out a prophesy just yet.

my apologies, did not do my due diligence - any admin please feel free to lock the thread or delete it altogether.

as the original poster, can I delete it? if so, how?

I could try to enhance other sections...but this one came out blurry as it is, the only reason it was worth it was because the green characters with shells were so prominent, Im sorry about that.

I've been excited for this film, until I saw these myself...and now others are pointing out the Krang as well...and like you, its making me...

...nervous. even if it is history, its alludes to the fact that other Turtles exist or have existed. either way, I've always enjoy the Ninja Turtles, as 4 unique individuals, and the product of an accident. mess with anything else, but NOT that. please not that.

I mean I know its not the best comparison by they had stuff like that in the third movie they were Kappa water demons of various shapes and body types,

TMNT 3 was not a good movie. Not the wisest idea going around citing ideas from it that might be included in this new movie.

TRICK...i dont often agree with you, but yes, a bummer indeed. A race of turtles...race of rats...basically an entire race of anthropomorphic animals - the one thing I always disliked about the Turtles over the years was the flux of other mutant individuals, and alien races...

...it detracted from the uniqueness of the Turtles, and all the sci-fi overshadowed their nature as shinobi.

Which, if true, just calls back even more to Blue Door.

Race of Turtle-like and rat-like beings from Dimension X.

And since the Utroms are clearly there, that just lends even more credence.

I know it's not in the realm of possibility, being different IPs and all, but....

Just one...just ONE white headed figure with some long ears among all that. C'mon, man.... :3

I will say this. All the negativity, all the nervousness, all the "dammit, they are going to really screw this up" feelings....

They're actually good. They're good for the film, believe it or not. Because if you go into a movie with ZERO positive expectations, the movie can exceed those and you can walk out going "Y'know....it wasn't great or what I hoped, but it was actually a lot better than I expected it to be."

Look at GI Joe. Rise of Cobra, you go in with nostalgia for the movies and how awesome the DDP comics had gotten only to be really let down by Halo suits and a lot of nonsense. That first movie battered expectations so low that Retaliation wasn't half bad compared to what was expected. :D

turtles time traveled in an attempt to stop krang make the foot in feudal japan. so those are the 4 turtles and splinter. sachs scroll initially left out the turtles but after his failed experiments or the ooze feel in the sewer the scroll changed. because the future has changed. the turtles were created and traced the badness back to ancient japan and went back. sachs is tripping because the scroll changed with the same mutants appearing he has confronted and knows he is responsible. hi jinx ensues.

Ohhh no no! I got it!

The big surprise is this isn't a reboot at all! It's a continuation from the original trilogy.

Oroku Saki has already been defeated in TMNT 2

The turtles time traveled in TMNT 3

Eric Sachs is a new guy taking up the Shredder persona from Saki and has militarized the top members of the foot clan since their martial arts weren't enough under Saki.

It all builds on the original trilogy, though some liberties with details have been taken.

 :D

Ssshhhhh, don't think about the details, just let my insanity guide you.

Go on and point out inconsistencies, my madness can explain them, I'm sure ;)

Not every movie has to be Oscar bait to be enjoyable but if a movie requires me to "lower my expectations" or "turn my brain off" or any other variation used to excuse movies that were made by people who don't give a ****, then why should I bother with that movie at all?

If they had a run in with Renet or a dimensional portal in a sequel that flashed to the original live action turtles (recreated with CGI, I guess) and made a point that this was one of many universes in which the turtles exist, I'd be down. Even moreso if one of the Henson turtles mocked their appearance. :P

And never mind the fact that it had Karai, who was nowhere to be found in the first three, and also included other elements that actually came from the 03 cartoon, like April having trained with them. I'm more inclined to think that the scepter was somehow tied to the Turtles Forever storyline, since it at least DID acknowledge that there were other TMNT worlds.

Agreed that it was just a nod. I don't think it had anything at all to do with the continuity of the other three- they weren't even living in the same lair. And April wasn't a reporter, either. Totally different continuity, IMHO. They were more like Easter Eggs, than anything. But it was kind of cool. I counted items from three different incarnations, including the OT.

I would say that sounds likely, but they seem to be going pretty well out of their way to scrub this movie of any alien origin. I mean, they even changed the title of this movie to clarify they were mutants. Such a huge oversight would seem extremely careless.

i read somewhere on the forums that the person who now owns the scroll was asked not to post an hi-resolution shots of it...

...im betting that's because 1) it either would panic fans into thinking the whole turtle-race is in play even though it is just a leftover from the BLUE DOOR script used in the background or 2) it actually alludes to plot points that could give the story away before the studio intends on it

I could only see them not alluding to the scroll if its the first one.

Which im hoping is the case, because this whole kappa/turtle-race thing is still not sitting well with me.

i cant quite tell if its a vile of ooze...or a jade piece of jewelry that is catching the light at an awkward angle...

...jade jewelry is prominent in asian culture - and considering the 'fu-manchu' appearance they seem to be going for, I could see it being a piece of jewelry...

UNLESS...

it is the last vile of ooze left, and Shredder is there to claim it from him so he can recreate it...just a thought.

Hey, just wondered if anybody noticed, but doesn't it look like Donny has a metal leg in the movie?

Or is that just armor?

It might be some sort of cast.

Maybe Donnie injures his leg part way through the movie?

I was just wondering why it's only on one leg then. Maybe it's just a stylistic choice though.

Whoever designed the new look is very fond of asymmetry. Mikey's design is extremely asymmetrical, and Raph has some of the same going on. Leo is the only one who looks like he's making an effort to adorn both sides of his body in a similar fashion.

Possible. We see that Raph has duct tape on his shell for an injury, so maybe Donnie got injured in the same fight.

I know it's a Lego figure and not necessarily the most accurate portrayal of the movie designs... but it sure looks like the bottom of his shell ends well above his "butt"/crotch area.

Nice dude, ive never seen it that close before. This just makes me even more excited to see this new trilogy play out. It seems like they will go the dimension X route with krang/utrom TCRI etc. Ive always wanted to see this stuff in a new massive turtles film. Ive been watching Liebesmans films lately and It makes me kind of wish they picked a better director but hes not that bad. But I'm not crazy about his work. I'm hoping he really nails it this time. Really, he is kind of a young director hes only like in his mid 30s with only a few big pictures under his belt so... Can someone post the other parts of this scroll close up? Id appreciated it

The guys in the UTROM thread do a great job of breaking down sections of the scroll...I mistakenly created this thread before checking it out and they were actually speculating about the scroll long before I came along. You should check it out when you have a chance. Some interesting theories get batted around.

Yes. I think this is the case, unless her father is another character already mentioned. In the IDW comic books, her father works at Stockgen and he has a stroke. I think he also dies in the comics so maybe this film picks up after that event. There is, however, a "young April" on the IMDB cast list. So maybe it's a flashback scene and you only see her father for a few seconds. Would be cool if that was Kevin Eastman's cameo.

I think it's all speculation at this point. I really just want one question answered, Does this film mention, reference, or feature Hamato Yoshi. If the answer is 'Yes', I'm super excited. If not, I'm still excited but not as much. IMO Oroku Saki can be changed. You can always take the route that Splinter just witnessed his master get murdered so he became a vigilante like Batman but instead of him fighting crime, he trained the turtles. With that storyline, the villain could really be anyone. However, Hamato Yoshi (whether he's Splinter's master, or he IS Splinter) is crucial, unless they somehow came up with something better. I'm also cool with the IDW storyline that Splinter and the Turtles are reincarnations of Yoshi and his sons. Which makes since why Eric Sachs would be fascinated with the "mythos of Shredder" if Shredder (Saki) had lived long ago in ancient Japan.

Also the little shot of Splinter that we go in the teaser looks almost exactly the same as he does in the IDW series.

Yea ive noticed that also! I totally agree, and I love it. He looks very " Asian " in this film so im thinking hes probably Yoshi.. and I think that they might take the 03 route and maybe make Sachs an android controlled by the same Utrom/Krang that controlled Saki back in Feudal Japan " like in the scroll " and that hes lived on in different bodies, now hes got more power than ever with total control over the police and politicians. That would be my guess, and like you said before I def. see some IDW influence here. All in all I actually think Splinter looks great. I think he was smaller back in the old comics too? Also the fact that the ooze canister in the trailer has TCRI written on it leading me to believe that they might take the Krang/Utrom/Dimension X route. Something I've ALWAYS wanted to see in a TMNT movie.

It was TCRI in the original Mirage books too. But yeah I definitely think it's a hybrid of '03 series, IDW, Mirage, and OT series with some new changes. Even Fichtner said that they were making changes throughout shooting which leads me to believe that they were following fan forums to make tweaks here and there based on what we want. Not saying it will be perfect but it definitely won't be a boring movie.

Where is anything that even suggests they've taken from more than one pre-existing version?

As far as I can see it's only some superficial elements from the Fred Wolf show mixed in with their Bue Door script.

And Karai appears on Mirage, 2K3, Imagi, IDW and Nicktoon. Yet she resembles none of them. I guess having her bangs dyed red makes her more akin to Nicktoon Karai since she have her neck hair dyed yellow, but she is played by an adult. So it's a complete new take on Karai, probably. And shell most likely be a underling once again, with added daughter of Shredder stamped on.

Ah...good point. fair enough.

While technically accurate I'd say that right now Karai is very much a staple character of the franchise so I can imagine her presence is mandated by Nickelodeon. Then again you'd think Oroku Saki is a staple character to and here we have some guy named Sachs as the Shredder.

I still little evidence that this movie is drawn from multiple TMNT sources in the way that people hope and claim.

Anyway, I think the scroll on Eric Sachs wall definitely hints at Utroms and a Japanese origin either on Shredder or the Turtles. Also the fact he mentions working with April's father in the teaser, the fact we see shots of the ooze in TCRI canisters in what looks like a laboratory, and Splinter's overall design is inspired by the IDW comic books. I wonder if Sachs wallpaper even will have some relevance in the movie. The Scroll in TMNT3 was just there and served little to the story. This could just be a wallpaper Sachs have in his weeaboo room decked next to his totally sugoi custom samurai suit. And the deco on the wallpaper is just obscure references (Utrom, TMNT3 Kappa). Like Captain America shield popping up in Iron Man, only less competent.

It seems to be a lot to digest with an allout mutant war with Utroms in ancient Japan, while getting a origin story (there's always an origin story) and cram in April first meeting and befriending the turtles, fighting scenes and Raph solo mission off to rescue the other turtles.

Loosely inspired maybe, but what we've seen PD Splinter might sports some more authentic styled Kimono then the usual bathrobe Splinter wear, and it's yellow. Plus a much more pronounced Fu Manshu facial hair and a small topknot, that looks a little silly looking. And his hands are a lot more rat like similar to Nicktoon Splinter's hands. IDW Splinter's hands are often portrayed much more "human" and in the same color as his fur.

As on-topic. It wouldn't be completely unreasonable that the wallpaper is just an Easter egg, or a possible future plot line with Utroms.

I'd say Splinter fights like most Japanese/Okinawan Bu Jutsu styles are: direct, precise and controlled. Unlike Hollywood martial arts where there is endless flips, jumps and pirouettes, and hopefully they keep it more true to some proper Japanese styles and add some fancy stuff without overdoing it. Not everything needs to be A Wuxia dance-off.

There is a contract for three movies. So the scrolls could allude to the events of the third movie, which could be a weird mash-up between TMNT III: Turtles in Time and IDW's mini-series, "The Secret History of the Foot Clan."

If this in any used ideas from IDW's Secret history of the foot clan, then I'm game.

I'm pretty sure it has, since most of their target audience reads the IDW books (adult fans who have children fans).
