View Full Version : What director would you pick for a Sequel

I personally do not mind Jonathan Liebesman and I think from what i've seen so far he's doing a great job. Some people think they could have picked someone better. If by some chance they end up going with a new Director for a sequel, what director would you guys pick ? A lot of people on this forum seem very knowledgeable about film and who directed what and I'm wondering who you guys would pick to direct.

My pick would be Brett Ratner. I enjoyed the Rush hour films, X men The Last Stand, Red Dragon, Horrible Bosses was funny, and hes also doing the new Hercules film. I just saw the trailer for Hercules and I was pleasantly surprised by how amazing the CGI was and the overall vibe I got from the trailer was great. I like how he packs comedy, grit and action into his movies. Id like my TMNT film to be a little dark with a touch of Science fiction as well. I think he could be right for the job. I also think he tried to get the job directing this film but Liebesman got the job instead. I could be wrong but I think it was him.

Ok, pick a director and please explain why you think he/she would be good for a TMNT Film.

Lol not sure if you were being sarcastic or not but.. Ive gotta be honest here even though it may not be popular.. I would LOVE Bay to Direct this film. Hes got the CGI, comedy and grit/ serious tone thing down with Transformers. If he had an awesome story and did this film the way the first Transformers film was done id be pretty happy.

I don't like changing directors in a series, unless a movie is really bad... That's how you get Batman Forever's and X-Men 3's. Even if it's better, it's awkward as can be.

Brett Ratner doesn't sound bad, though.

For Action scenes, i would actually have Michael Bay. If there's one thing Michael Bay can do, it's action scenes.

For story and non action scenes, I would Pick someone like Joss Whedon

Seth Gordon directed Horrible Bosses, not Brett Ratner which is why that is the best movie you listed.

I would want a director who cares about the franchise and hasn't made a career out of being mediocre at best like Liebsman or Ratner.

None of the big names being mentioned would likely touch it, so maybe somebody who hasn't directed much but would see it as an opportunity and not a job.

That was insulting to you? As I said in my post I don't have anyone specific in mind, but I would hope if this movie gets a sequel that it would be somebody who is a fan of the franchise. Maybe a successful indie director making the move to a studio like Gareth Edwards going from Monsters to Godzilla. I know Joe Cornish was rumored to be in the running for the new Star Trek for a while. I didn't love Attack the Block but I'm interested in seeing what he does next. He might not be a bad choice.

The Raid Redemption is so intense it makes me nauseous and sometimes I catch myself begging for the fight to end lol. If I could pick any director for a TMNT film, I would go with Guillermo del Toro. The guy can handle action, humor, and extreme creature effects all at the same time. My only concern would be that I haven't seen him direct any martial arts style fighting, but the right stunt team and fight choreographers would take care of that just fine.

I dont know who I would like to see direct a sequel...but I know who I WOULDNT like to see lay a finger on this...not because they arent Turtle fans, or understand the material, but because they are horrible filmmakers, and as graduate of arts, from an artistic standpoint, I CANNOT believe they get paid more than me to make the garbage films they crank out...

my 'NO' list:

-Brett Ratner: terrible director, tries too hard to be more stylish than he's really capable of handling, a poor man's Michael Bay
- Uwe Boll: just no
- MKnight Shamalamadingdong: he destroyed the Last Airbender - how do you take source material than charming, and SUCK the life out of it???
- Paul WS Anderson: not only does he cast his wife in everything he does, which is the only reason shes gets any work, but his action is SO generic, and his characters are never engaging, a product of poor acting, and poor direction

...hmmm. cant think of anyone else right now.

Rodriguez is a crazy enough decision to work. I don't know. The guy is a fantastic director when it comes to adult action, but his kids' films are atrocious, and TMNT falls somewhere in between. He also makes weird decisions with special effects. It's hard to describe, but he always goes for special effects that would be incredible, if only more time (and possibly money) were spent on them, which winds up making some of his more effects-heavy work look really cheap and corny.

Still, I would be incredibly curious to see how that would turn out.

i wonder if there is a resident evil forum and fans are outraged that his garbage continues to get greenlit by the studio.

EDIT...and before anyone says, how can hate the RE franchise, but support the changes they are making to TMNT, its primarily because he build a universe around one character (his wife) that didnt exist in the actual RE video game continuity - and shoehorned in ACTUAL characters from RE lore. At least with the Turtles, despite the changes, the characters we know and all are taking center stage...not like Winters in TMNT (2007) which I personally choose to forget, minus the awesome Leo vs Raph scene.

Now, for a complete reboot, I'd like to see it in the hands of Brad Bird. He did The Iron Giant and The Incredibles, and has just now ventured into live-action with Mission: Impossible 4. If you look at his animated features, they have so much heart and that's something the Turtles franchise really thrives on.

Bingo. Del Toro would definitely be one of my top picks. He has a serious gift with -- and love for -- practical "creature" effects, so he'd likely try to avoid CGI-ing the hell out of the thing, and you know his Turtles would look incredible. Get the right cinematographer and martial arts choreographers and you've got one hell of a movie.

In the end, there likely wouldn't be much difference. The writer of the new film himself said in that interview a few weeks ago that you'll feel Bay's presence throughout the entire thing. It really seems to me that this is a situation of Bay actually calling the shots, but not having time to shoot the thing due to Transformers. Basically, this entire production seems like second unit work.

I didn't imply anything, you just can't fathom someone saying a movie they like is dumb and without heart. I was trying to make a point that very clearly flew over your head.

Also, "implided"? Come on, man.

*implied, it's the last time i trust auto correct. I took it the wrong way, I am sorry man.

Zack snider, Bryan singer, sigh. All these big time directors come with the need for big time budgets which introduce all the same big time issues that you all hate with this movie. Truth is only a small percentage of the population really care about the turtles and keeping the turtles true to the origin. So the only directors I would trust are smaller lesser known directors who have impressive work and a passion for the turtles. Rupert Wyatt was virtually an unknown but he made an awesome Planet of the Apes film that was way more brilliant than the better know director Tim Burton's version. Steve Barron's TMNT film was excellent because he didn't have a studio standing over him saying "Change this this and this so we can get more overseas money". He was a small director with complete creative control, a small budget, and a passion for the original TMNT comic books.

You just put in words what i couldn't. Look at Dredd for example, it's an awesome movie, and it's made by no name director, lesser directors will try to make the movie that fits the comics best as opose to those big ones who will make it "their vission" like Snyder or Bay, they make every movie in their style no matter the material...

Nicolas Winding Refn, if it was a direct version of mirage ( that guy has a true fetish for violence and I love it)

This of course would be a very very dark reboot

Oh god, please keep Singer away from TMNT. All 4 of them would be wearing costumes like Raphael's Stump Asteroid suit from the Archies, and you can bet he'd use the "outcasts from society living in a sewer" angle as some kind of gay allegory to suit his agenda. With very small fights.

I can already imagine the "Have you tried... not being a mutant turtle?" scene. Ugh. No, no, no.

It's cool. My point was 300 and Sucker Punch are both pretty shallow movies.

So let's be clear: you have a problem with Zack as a screenwriter, not a director. Both 300 and SuckerPunch are both visually and directionally sound, and pretty grabbing... even if yes, at the end of the day both are somewhat hollow affairs at heart.

Solution: have someone else write the screenplay.

I hated SuckerPunch. I expected the movie to not be very good, but hoped the action would at least be fun. Somehow he made ridiculous over the top action tedious.

Yeah, I guess you're right. 300 is awesome strictly on a "Did you see THAT?" kind of way.

The PG-13 rating definitely hurt SuckerPunch. It was trying to be some kind of high concept, super dark action-driven "Brazil" movie in a poor man's Terry Gilliam style but with a bigger budget... and with absolutely no teeth, despite all these swords and bullets flying around.

I am trying not to be an asshole but if you type best directors first few names are basicly copy pasted here...

Well, not me. I love KickAss, it's my second favorite comic book movie next to the 1990 TMNT, and I just think that Vaughn could make a great TMNT movie. He knows how to add in comedy, the awkwardness, the craziness, and awesome action/fight scenes, and he also knows how to pick some terrific music to go with those action scenes.

The only thing bad about him, is that he tends to not stay with the franchise he helps get off the ground, in search for better projects.

Yeah, I mean I don't think it necessarily needed to be rated R, but when the giant robot punches the girl through a brick wall and not only does she get right back up but her hair isn't even out of place my eyes start to glaze over.

It's the same problem I have with Raphael being thrown through a hummer in the trailer. Maybe in the context of the movie it actually affects him, but I doubt it. Action without consequence is a waste of time.

Cornish would be an interesting pick, Im actually looking forward to Ant-man! Ill have to check out Attack of the Block I haven't seen that one yet. )

It's Edgar Wright who is directing Ant-Man... And I think he'd have a pretty unique take on the turtles.

He would get the banter perfectly, and his qucik cuts, zooms would work amazing for TMNT, it would basicly be a samurai movie with ninjas...

I absolutely love Edgar Wright, but his style seems a bit goofy for the turtles. I don't know, one I've seen Ant-Man that opinion may change. He's definitely talented, but his work tends to be extremely lighthearted even when he's handling violence and gore.

My top 5 in no particular order:

1. Matthew Vaughan
2. Gareth Evans
3. Joss Whedon
4. Stephen Speilberg
5. Barry Sonnenfeld

Honorable mention: Ivan Reitman and Brad Bird

Besides Evans, all of those directors are capable of mixing action with humor and emotion. I'm not sure if Evans can do humor, but he would definitely nail the action.

You're absolutely right - he's down as screenwriter. Never knew that!

Edgar directed Scott Pilgrim, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End. Pretty much what the others said about his direction, not sure if it'd be perfect, it may be a bit on the quirky side... But it would be fun!

I love Tarantino, but couldn't see him doing this. Would probably be shot like an old kung fu flick... And I would love it!

Rodriguez would be cool, but he does come with his own set of actors. Danny Trejo as Shredder, Salma Hayek as April and special effects from Tom Savini  It'd be nuts, just not 'TMNT' as we know it..

Del Toro would be amazing. He smashed the Hellboy movies out of the park and if he brought that to the turtles it would be brilliant. I'd love to see his version of Krang, the Rock Soldiers and Dimension X, or Triceratons or something...

That style would fit perfect with TMNT, you've got high action, great comedy, believable characters, fast pacing, and great shot framing. You win the internets.

Attack the Block is one of the greatest films I've ever seen. I went in with zero expectations, expecting to play it as background noise while I worked on a comic, but I wound up having to stop what I was doing to focus on the film.

I really don't have a certain director I would pick for a TMNT film.

I would want someone who is fully devoted fan to give us fans the TMNT film we would all like to see. A dark, down to Earth emotional violently Martial Arts filled, yet including comedy and light heartedneas too. I want something close to the source material (I'm open to the changes in the upcoming movie, but that doesn't mean I would've preferred some of them [size/bulk, and possibly the whitewash of Shredder, but we'll see if there's more behind that]), yet still giving us something new and fresh. I would want a director who gives us a movie that both the fans and the general masses will enjoy.

Seeing Edgar Wright doing a TMNT film movie would be awesome! I'm so excited to see his take on Ant-Man (even though I'm still cautious about the movie being about Scott Lang instead of Hank Pym). He's been writing and working on that movie for YEARS, and he just has a great passion for the things he works on, not to mention amazing talent.
