View Full Version : Rolling Stone names new TMNT movie as 1 of the 5 Summer Films with "Bad Vibes"

Peter Travers singles out a quintet of summer-movie releases that scream 'What were they thinking?' and one of them is the new TMNT movie.

It should be noted that he has also put Guardians of the Galaxy on the list as well.

Here's the quote "Talk about the kiss of death. Michael Bay (him again!) serves as producer of this new reincarnation of the pizza-gobbling Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael as they battle the evil…oh, who the hell cares?"

Not looking good.

Not looking good? Because of one guy. Yes, I understand it's Peter Travers from Rolling Stone, but it's one man's opinion...no different than ANYONE on these forums.

And he's was also bashing Guardians??? Seriously? Smh.

Wow lol.. Judging by his little comments he just seems like another Bay hater. " Who the hell cares ?" Exactly lol. On top of the fact that he adds Guardians in there makes me care even less what he has to say. I used to read rolling stone until they decided to stick a Chechen terrorist on the front cover looking like a Rock Star while his victims were still in the Hospital. Seriously, I think they should stick to music.

There are two kinds of haters of this movie 1. the internet fan who hates any form of change and 2. folks who just love the 1987 show.

I like and grew up watching the 80's cartoon as well as enjoy the 2003 cartoon. Those are 2 pretty different series which had lots of changes (and I also like the original comic books)...so it can't be 'hates any form of change'.

And the 2003 cartoon is my favorite, so it's not the 'just love the 1987 show' kind.

So what's the third kind of hater?

Bry

Is that the extent of it? I mean, honestly - there are lots of reasons to criticize what we've seen of this movie so far, but Travers' write-up doesn't do a thing to back up or explain his opinion - it's just an outright dismissal. Pretty weak. Briefly describing the premise and saying "what!?" or "yikes!" is basically just doing this:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d153/Rattrap007/List%20of%20Crap/jay_sherman_it_stinks.jpg

Kind of sad that this is what passes for criticism/analysis from a major magazine.

Hey, don't sell us haters short! There's a vast rainbow of haters out there, all with our own different reasons, tastes and preferences. We're unique snowflakes, is what we are!

:trolleye: How is expressing actual concerns with this movie considered "whining"?

People need to accept that everyone as their own reason's for not being 100% on board with this film, and just move on. Just because it has the name "TMNT" on it, not everyone is gonna like it.

I will definitely be giving this movie a chance, I grew up on the first 3 full-colored graphic comics and the 80's toon (I remember the 5-part mini-series of Season 1 would air every Wednesday afternoon when I was living in San Diego, went to K-Mart with my mom only to discover a bunch of transformers & Real Ghostbusters action figures; sadly there were no toys until fall of 88') along with the NES game and toys from 87 and so on. All i need is my butter-flavored popcorn, will be burning one prior to the midnight showing, that's for sure ;)

All this hater\whiner labeling people are doing comes off to me as nothing more than an attempt to invalidate opinions that don't mesh with there own. I guess its just easier to call someone a hater or say they can't handle change than to accept an opposing veiwpoint as being reasonable.

This movie does have a lot of people hating on it. This movie will have to be incredible for it not to be a flop. If a large amount of nostalgia people see it, and it they don't like it. It will be all over for this movie.

I think the hardcore fans who don't see it will put a serious damper on they're opening weekend gross.

O hell yea lol. Nemec said it best in that interview lol. Gobs of popcorn will be going down into my belly lol. I just couldn't get enough of the 80s cartoon. During the opening I remember watching Mikey swing his chucks around at the exact time a nasty sounding Distorted guitar would ring out and I just thought that was so awesome as a kid, and still to this day. I think well get that same dark vibe in this film. Cant wait for the midnight showing its gonna be crazy. I still have that NES game but it doesn't work anymore : /

the reality is, there are MANY reasons people aren't excited about this movie, and it goes beyond "whiners". Critics LOATHE TMNT films...almost universally. That's a given we are all aware of. Some of us just don't like the designs of the turtles. Others don't like the leaked script and are afraid of how little may have been changed/"fixed" for the final film. Others don't like the changes for changes sake (if it ain't broke...don't make Shedder an old whit dude). Others just don't like Megan Fox and have reservations this may be "April and her sidekick turtles" movie. Others don't like the track record of the director and producer, and their lack of respect for source material and focus on BOOM BAM. Others feel like Hollywood is just cashing in on brand recognition, and feel the turtles deserve a more mature approach (not "mature" as in rated R or "gritty" but as in an actual respect and seriousness but still fun and accessible......like the "Toy Story" films, for example).

Why these ideas are so unreasonable to grasp is beyond me......

Besides the fact I think Mr Travers might be onto something, I agree with what Bry said about his "reporting" or dismissal and it leaves a lot to be desired, considering RS is supposed to be a serious magazine with good content...which it hasn't been since the mid to late 90's, probably even earlier

Rolling Stone wrote Black Sabbath off in 1970, they've a long history of "getting it wrong"...so if this article has upset you take solace in that.

I understand the statement of TMNT having bad vibes. It's certainly garnered mixed reactions.

And I understand Guardians being a "what are they thinking" movie since it really is a departure and a gamble for Marvel (one that, if it pays off, will give us more smaller property developments in some way I think). But Iron Man was a gamble when it released as well.

Now, while I agree Guardians is a long shot idea, I wouldn't say it has bad vibes. It's gotten largely positive reactions. And come July, you can bet WWE will be advertising the hell out of it....directly to the age demographic that is most likely to spend the money.

I wasn't being snarky. I am typically very civil in online discussion forums trough out the interwebs. If i was ever intentionally being snarky, I'd be perm-banned. In this case, I was defending the dissenting opinions of those folks that are disappointed in what we've seen from this film, by using the very technique that Jester recognized. I'll admit that long time posters like Trick, Sheep, and Powder can be rude and "snarky" at times, but it is usually in their own defense that they bite back against people who are often just being offensive and argumentative. For the past few months, before the lockdown, "haters" have been attacked for not being excited. And here we are, after the lockdown and 2 week bans, and the "haters" are still being attacked. It's insane that people can't have their own negative opinions on things without having to walk on eggshells. :tconfuse:

Taking a break from the movie forums is a good idea when you're feeling on edge. Go hit up some of the other forums here where there is less visible tension.

It's insane that people can't have their own negative opinions on things without having to walk on eggshells. What it all comes down to is people have become soft and need to grow a backbone. If every opinion that doesn't reflect their own, offends them so much then go and live in a secluded cave away from the rest of the world because believe it or not, everyone has varying opinions. We don't or shouldn't think as a collective.

Yeah, I take whatever the critics say with a grain of salt. I've seen highly praised movies like Drive, Cabin in the Woods and Gravity, which are alright but not these exceptional movies I was lead to believe, but then go and enjoy critics most hated like most Michael Bay movies, The Lone Ranger, Expendables. Seems most critics tend to not like movies meant for manly men. I wonder why?

It is kind of funny, us filthy casuals who read books like Harry Potter and TMNT, and watch movies like TMNT and Jackass, but could care less about Shakespeare In Love, can understand perfectly what TMNT is about, that these so called intellectual critics fail to understand.

Sounds like the dude hates summer movies.

Sounds like a grumpy old fart that judge things without looking at the whole picture. :tcool:

Seriously, why is that someone can't express a genuine opinion about something, whether they like it or don't, without being labeled so one-dimensionally? Good grief. With political debates the equivalent of childish arguments, drama on social media, and silly back n' forths amongst fandoms raging idiotic wars between "the haters" and "the apologists," the world could use a serious reality adjustment.

People don't agree with critics because people don't agree with people in general. A published opinion from a somebody is about as valid as the opinions posted on forums and on Facebook and Twitter by nobodies. It's just an opinion. Opinions are not facts, even if they're stated as such.

I also don't get why people cling to the "you just don't get it!" defense. As Guillermo Del Toro once said, how often do you like something just because you "get" it? That doesn't make something good. I get Transformers II. I still hate it. I get the new TMNT movie. It still looks like crap. I don't fully understand John Dies at the End, but I still enjoyed it. That doesn't mean you're wrong for thinking otherwise, nor does it make me wrong for expressing such an opinion. If people understood this more, there probably wouldn't be as many silly arguments between fans and critics or fans and other fans.

Very good point. I couldn't decide if I agreed with that idea or not. Some of my favorite films, books and TV shows confuse the heck out of me. I went to film school and pride myself on my ability to analyze and dissect films and media, but plenty of incredible films just aren't meant to be "got."

I really think Travers should have elaborated more on why he thinks said movies are giving him "bad vibes." He didn't really say much beyond the whole Michael Bay thing for the most part. I have legitimate concerns as to why this movie is giving me bad vibes: Megan Fox as April, Turtles as Shrek Hulks who probably won't be doing much in the way of ninjitsu, Erich Sachs as Shredder, and that's just three things right there.

I wonder why?. its all about prospective really. I guess when your job is to dissect films for their deeper meaning movies that are only bang-bang,boom-boom action orgys can start to seem a little shallow. I enjoy a "manly" movie as much as the next guy but if I had to critique them for a living I imagine I'd run out of things to say.

I really think Travers should have elaborated more on why he thinks said movies are giving him "bad vibes." He didn't really say much beyond the whole Michael Bay thing for the most part. I have legitimate concerns as to why this movie is giving me bad vibes: Megan Fox as April, Turtles as Shrek Hulks who probably won't be doing much in the way of ninjitsu, Erich Sachs as Shredder, and that's just three things right there. the micheal bay thing is kind of a lot in itself. I was willing to give him the benefit of doubt in the beginning but his sensibilitys as a film maker never made him the right fit for a ninja turtle movie in my eyes. I'm pretty confident the ONLY reason his production company got the job was because of his success with another big 80's franchise with a popular toy line. The problem is transformers had elements that are closer to bays comfort zone while the turtles don't.

Yeah, I get that, but I just think the guy was a bit vague on the whole thing and really should have elaborated more on why the movie is giving him bad vibes besides the whole Michael Bay thing.

Lies. I don't like it not because it's different, I dislike it because they look like Shrek Hulks and probably won't be ninja-ing.

Took the words straight out of my mouth.
