Ok...fair enough but they could have scaled it down a little.
But even if we let the faces pass, did we seriously need all that additional accessories

I'm calling bullsh*t on his "defense". If you can lip sync a creature, let's use a recent example; Smaug, then you can lip sync a more classic Looking Ninja Turtle quite fine, it's not hard to translate a mouth movement over to a creature.

i wouldn't call this a defense really, just talking about it, not once does he give any "Defense" for anything, turtles design or movement wise he just says they wanted to capture the Human element..which in a way is really concerning
and it isn't that hard to voice over, most of the time these creatures are voice recorded before they are animated, with call backs for ADR after
also Alan is very misinformed,
Davy Jones,Gollum and Avengers Hulk, are all on Set recent motion capture creatures..so this isn't something "New"...new to the turtles sure but not new to the screen
and thats just 3

Yeah sure. Record the movements, and the export them onto the CG model and the polish the animation. I know how to use Mo-Cap animation and how to lip sync. It's not hard, just tedious.

You know what I got out of this is that it's really quite cool how much Raphael looks like Ritchson (I would post pictures, but im not at my computer) but I noticed mostly in the mouth. I think thats something cool and worthwhile.

The only thing I know this guy from is Smallville. I really wasn't impressed with his acting ability on that show. Justin Hartley definitely made a better Aquaman (IMO).
But to be fair I haven't seen him in anything else (that I can remember). Maybe he'll nail the part of Raph.

I don't have a current portfolio, but if you work with animation you should know that a professional animator working in a company, that does the animation for the PD TMNT shouldn't be hindered by importing a lip-sync animation onto a creature model that doesn't have puffer lips.
If Alan's defense have some actual merit to it, well. I'd expect more from Legacy Effects, heck. I'd expect more from any company doing effects for a Hollywood blockbuster movie.

How about getting someone who would ask him some actual REAL questions about the film or at least about his character, the personality he will give to the character of Raph, how the family unit/The Turtles in the film bond with one another (or do they have any rapport with each other, what Raph thinks about his other brothers, etc...you know, actually about the Character), or questions that even people on here could/would ask him...
Not some seemingly Brain Dead girl who seems like a reject from Clueless. It's sad that people actually get PAID for that.

Guys please calm down we don't need any more threads locked thank you ;)
It's not? Um yeah it's actually a lot more difficult than you think to do that stuff.
Nobody's arguing that it's not difficult. But it's possible, and it's frustrating that they're not going that extra mile to bring those beloved, classic designs to life in a way they haven't been yet, and instead going the easier route of just mimicking a human mouth on the Turtles' faces. There's a reason people are reacting so poorly to those designs, and there's a reason the actors are being questioned about it in otherwise-softball entertainment interviews.
It's a pretty poor defense, IMO - who's really interested in a "human" performance from the Turtles? They're not human. It just makes it sound like the people making this movie entirely missed the point
It's like if they just stuck Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel's mouths on top of Rocket and Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. But instead they put in the effort to do it right - they animated them to look great, look "realistic", and also capture the essence of those designs.

He said it's what he's heard, and that he's guessing. I don't find it hard to believe he'd be under that impression.
Regardless of whether it's possible to transfer his facial performance onto a traditionally-shaped ninja turtle mouth, you don't need to be a mocap expert to know that his facial performance would absolutely translate better onto a face that's shaped more like his own. The less it's changed, the more of the actor's performance will show though, no question. So if that's what they were going for, the reasoning is sound.

Rocket is probably the strongest example available right now. Realistic looking among human live action actors, no human element to his facial design, yet they'll still have to match him up.
Groot was motion captured as well. Definitely inhuman face, but they'll still have to get it all lined up and looking right. I'd say he has a chance for more human-esque expressions, more than Rocket.

I don't doubt that it's easier, or even that the technology will be effective at doing what they're doing. I just disagree with the entire idea and think it's faulty reasoning from the get-go. Making the Turtles more "human" is a stupid idea. Making any inhuman character more "human" takes away from what makes them special or memorable, design-wise. It makes the whole thing worse on a conceptual level.

Seems a bit silly that he feels audiences will only connect with the Turtles if they look more human. Appearances aren't what makes an audience connect with a character, it's their personalities. Your heart broke with the Jim Henson Turtles when they sat around that campfire, and they didn't have squashed noses and Jar-Jar mouths.

I love how he chuckles when the camera man sticks his head out and says " HEY why do they look weeeeirrrd? " its like the real camera guy was secretly killed and someone from the internet hijacked his camera and snuck in to ask him that lol. I'm glad he did though. Then Alan laughs like " Man this is ridiculous " lol.

like he said there's a reason for everything its just too often the reasoning in hollywood is half baked and done with the worst motivation. i'm not so sure the way they went with the turtles faces was the only possible way but probably more like the easier way. considering that their dubbing over the vocal performance of two mocapped actors at the moment I dare say that if getting the actors performance to come across as they preformed was a priority it isn't anymore. they could've animated whatever they wanted to making a more reptilian traditional looking face probably would've taken more time than they were willing to spend. either way the faces are just one aspect of whats wrong with the design whats the explanation for the rest?

Ironically, we're basically going with the concept of the very first TMNT movie suggestion, except they aren't well known comedians playing the turtles.

But if their goal is to show more human expression, then the more of the actor's facial structure is carried over, the more of his facial motions will be preserved.
The Henson puppets and Rocket Racoon may display sufficient human expression and emotion, which is a matter of opinion, but this will certainly show more.
It is, at least, a reason...

Well, I did write that in a older thread, when we saw that both Mikey and Raph looked more like the actor playing them then Leo and Donnie, seeing Alan and Noel are far more famous then the other two.
considering that their dubbing over the vocal performance of two mocapped actors at the moment I dare say that if getting the actors performance to come across as they preformed was a priority it isn't anymore.
This is an excellent point, and kind of blows much of the defense out of the water.

Not really live action voice acting is more then just voice? seriously they still need to act emote express, you know act. whether or not its there voice that actually escapes their mouth or not.

Yes, but already the vocal performance isn't matched to the same actor performing it, which is supposed to be the benefit here. If you're not preserving the entirety of a specific performance (including having a level of facial likeness to one actor without using his voice performance), then why not just animate it separately? Why not go with an entirely different/better design? Why not rework it into something that better matches the new voice actor? It's doubtful they'd even have time to do that at this point.

Which will be refined by Animators anyway. Mo-cap animation isn't just slapping it onto the model and finito, it have to be refined, tweaked and ironed out.
One of the problems with the Mo-Cap Beowulf movie was that they didn't do the tweaking and just more or less slapped the animation on the rigs and called it a day.

Personally im very excited for a more expressive turtle not just brow furrowing and mouth movie which is about all we got before I want to see the anguish in Raphs eyes the anger and i already see that from what we have seen. Say what you will about donnie but but in the seen of him yelling i feel it its emotional and i dont even know why hes yelling all i know is his actor was acting and very well for that matter i can see it in his face.

Agreed, Also the eyes. Thought They fixed issues like this for the hobbit movies my making the eyes "track a horizon" so they dont stay stationary, something real eyes are im capable of doing we're always focusing on something.
Its one aspect of died eyes.
But the track of the mouth and adding voice can be match up pretty easy while keeping all other aspect in line to being emotive and expressive

yep. from what alan was saying in the video the defense it that its was necessary to capture the nuances of performances given by the actors portraying the turtles both in voice and action. but thanks to recent events we now know that one of those turtle actors will have his performance dubbed over by another actor. unless they're doing some facial cleanup to map leos face to knoxvilles the only difference between this and how the turtles were portrayed back in the day is the technology ansd that now they have to match the voice with pete plosneks facial expressions. for all intents and purposes he could've just been a stunt man and for that matter they all could've been with voices dubbed in later on faces they could've designed to look however they wanted.

Did you read what I quoted? Don't put words in my mouth.. This seems to be a pattern with you bud lol. The questions that were asked in the quote are all questions that I'm sure Alan isn't allowed to elaborate on just yet. But yet this whole " why didn't this dumb brain dead reject from clueless tell me what I wanna know" attitude. I didn't give a choice, I suggested waiting for the movie. As you know.. people don't have to pay for a movie to see it these days. Its ok to ask questions but if your questions aren't answered fast enough that doesn't make someone a " Brain Dead girl who seems like a reject from Clueless ".. Anyways.. people relate to these characters bc they have human characteristics. Human personalities. Even the old movie, it was Human beings in suits. Allowing these actors to perform their facial characteristics, their personalities isn't a bad thing imo. Whatever lol.. This is exhausting. To each their own. : )

Even without liking much of what I'm seeing, I agree it's good to see some who are involved starting to talk about it.
Though I will say...of course he'll defend the movie. Nobody attached to the project in their right mind would say anything but praise for it until well after box office numbers are locked in place. Even if they HATED the movie and were miserable working on it every day, you don't bad mouth your own project before it's out.

Y'know, in fact, even with all the things I don't like about the movie, if Alan Ritchson bad mouthed it, I'd be kind of disappointed in him.
*I* can dislike the movie, but I still want the people working on it to have some apparent passion for what they're working on. They can trash it in hindsight and say if there were things they didn't like, that's fine, but now I would want them to be excited for their film, even if I were to disagree with it.
Kind of like Bill Murray and Ghostbusters II. He's been quite vocal about his opinion on it after the fact, but I don't think he trashed it before or even around its release/after release. It took a while for him to look back and give his opinion. It's professional.

Honestly, I think it's pretty reasonable for fans to want an idea about how long-standing characters are going to be portrayed before they put down around $15 for a movie ticket. Especially in this day and age. Asking an actor questions about their character's traits and relationships is pretty standard in media interviews and movie promotion. I'd say it's pretty essential, actually.
Though, to be fair: this wasn't even an interview for the TMNT movie - it was an red carpet piece at a charity event. So I don't think any insults toward the interviewer were warranted. Ritchson was clearly put on the spot here, and to his credit, he handled it as well as he could have.
Though the questions you quoted are questions that should be asked during proper promotional interviews, and to my knowledge we haven't really gotten answers to those yet.

Fair enough.. But he was obviously told not to talk about it. For whatever reason. Yea.. I guess they are valid questions.. its the context. This whole " The movie must be a **** turd bc my questions aren't being answered fast enough" is what I was more or less talking about. This has ALWAYS been the case!! Trailers, interviews, articles etc.. Then you add in the personal insults on top of it. I dont think that it is unreasonable for me to suggest waiting for a movie to come out before assuming such things.
Edit: Plus.. he has answered some of those questions and rather than calling people names maybe just do a google search: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCwQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.comicbookmovie.com%2Ffansites %2Fmovienewsandreviews%2Fnews%2F%3Fa%3D90719&ei=75ZrU-KqGYqpsQT1vIHQBg&usg=AFQjCNF6eZhGp1ToeZRGQrTOmumPNH4qJg&sig2=qMLzL53_aBY6CtuBUv-OQg

Of course he's gonna defend it. Would you speak badly about a movie you're involved in while you're getting paid?

Trying to think outside the fact he's been/being paid for being involved in the flick, and has a lot riding on it career-wise... he's also INVOLVED in the movie.
Meaning he's read the shooting script, been privy to a very large chunk of the production, I'm assuming both behind and in front of the camera. (I'm sure there's a lot of talk when the camera isn't rolling, meetings nad whatnot....). I'm sure he's seen storyboards, FX pre-viz, dailies.... He has a better idea of what's to come than any of use lowly fans on a message board bitching and moaning about the crumbs we've been show thus far. So yeah. he's probably at very least somewhat proud of his involvement and knows why they've done what they've done. All we can do is speculate at this point. It's silly to think he wouldn't 'defend' the movie when no one really has much ammo to attack it. (other than the superficial things that we know so far)

I respect that he was smart enough to say (twice) that he doesn't know why they designed the turtles in the way they have but offers his why he believes they did.
Obviously his defense doesn't hold up to any scrutiny when up against many similar movies including it's competition Guardian of the Galaxy or even other characters in his own movie. They'll have to synch up Knoxville with Leo's actor and the same with Splinter who doesn't seem to have a human-eque face but I'm not going to criticize him for trying his best on a subject he doesn't fully know the full details of..
Trying to think outside the fact he's been/being paid for being involved in the flick, and has a lot riding on it career-wise... he's also INVOLVED in the movie.
Ah but by his own admission his involvement in the movie doesn't mean he knows the creative decisions behind it or at least he's claiming he doesn't.
While it maybe kinda sad that they don't let him who is actually going to be doing the grunt work on why they are doing it the way they are it's pretty much par of the course with this movie. Based on his previous interviews I doubt he cares that much.

Well he claimed the leaked script was not the script they worked with in the same manner that Bay did he claimed it was nothing to do with Platinum Dunes and completely ditched.
Of course we know that aint true but I'll give Richtson the benefit of the doubt that he's never read the leaked script and isn't aware that it's the basis of the scripts he had. I've said before some of the actors seem to be being misled (if their interviews are to be believed) on a lot of factors to do with this movie.
Also I'm sure most people working on Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation thought they were making a quality product. I doubt Ritchson really knows what a general TMNT fan would like to see.

I agree 100%. Id argue that he's confident in knowing what is coming and understands that no matter what he says people will trash him and call him a liar like they did here and say that he doesn't belong in Red. Your absolutely right though.. all we can do is speculate. They are probably Knee deep into post production and I'm guessing within the next month or so we'll get something more substantial.

Fair enough. I'm sure he wasn't privy to everything that went on in pre-production, but maybe a tad less in post. I'd like to think that if I was working on a movie like this, I'd be ALL UP in everyone's offices checking **** out, and you know I'd be asking questions. A whole lot of questions. lol Especially if I was prancing around in a leotard with a foam shell on my back the whole time.

with the summer season starting soon All the summer block buster and comic cons and other conventions Even E3 there are plenty of outlets for excessive marketing(which i hope they dont do) but a steady health release schedule will do wonders IMO. If twitter is any indication people are pretty excited about this movie. So show something epic at comic con this year and its sure to popular

I've only seen two of them and only really the last which seems to be used a lot for internet articles seems that praised and incidentally is the most faithful "redesign" - imagine that. I'd also point out that none have the off putting human faces or are overly bulky like the movie versions.
Another thing is that there is a difference in praising a fan art which redesigns the characters and what is being used professionally for what is supposed to be major Hollywood movie. The first piece of art you posted I'd say is an interesting take on TMNT but no way would anyone want to see it in a movie.

Mikey looks fine now? Um...a bit more palatable perhaps but I wouldn't go as far to say he looks fine or "badass".
Also if indeed Dontatello is fine and it's just because they've chosen two shots of him were he's making strange faces then then it's a bit weird they deliberately chose those two shots out of an entire movie of the character looking normal.
Kind of how they chose the worst shot of Mikey with his mask off to sell the trailers. I would argue that those shots are not only representative of what we're getting and that they chose those moments in particular because they believe everyone would love the idea of the human-eque faces on the turtles (just like they thought we'd love them being aliens and Col. Schrader) but obviously most people loathe it which shows that these people do not get it.

Were you not long ago arguing that the action figure box art should not be taken as representative of the movie designs?
Also I think it's kind of funny that a lot of people who breathed a sigh of relief after seeing pictures of those maquettes overlooked that their purpose was to give the actors a general round-a-bout impression of what the turtles would look like as opposed to a definite finished design.
Obviously I don't see human-like lips on those designs, I don't see pronounced nostrils either but we know the finished designs all have them.
Not to mention the maquettes are missing several things such as Don's ridiculous glasses and Raph and Mikey's straps and shell beads and sun glasses etc
Those maquettes were popular because they resembled the classic turtle look particularly in the faces despite some redesigned elements but no one accounted that they'd further change them and load them with even more extraneous crap or superimpose human faces...well I actually did and feel somewhat vindicated in not taking those statuettes seriously. Instead everyone should have been paying attention to that Halloween costume - much more accurate to what we're getting.

third one down are they not larger i can find larger one that still get heaps of praise while these are getting bashed,
Yes i have heard peopel say "i would prefer seeing these one over the movie designs WHich in fan art form get praised as amazing SMH
It just astounds me that people feel its ok to say hey all to designs are good then see the movie turtle and be like "what were they thinking" it makes absolutely so sense you dont like it fine that cool but to bash it so vigorously is ridiculous.

They choose those to shots becasuse they Convey Emotion More then any turtle ass notice the way his eye brow are angled in worry fear anguish hes clenching his teeth as seen in this jaw is breathing in through his teeth, sneering so his lips look "awkward". His eye show so much life widened by astonishment surprise. Something no live action turtle as ever been able to do, ever. his Scream!!!! Come on so much emotion eye clenched shut forced bellow
They choose the Mikey scene As Joke and IDK about you but the is Quintessential Mikey right there SO naive. Think a simple eye mask protects his "identity" It not that they were trying to sell the look they were trying to sell the character.
http://www.portlandmercury.com/binary/00c5/1398891882-mikey.png
this in no way looks like Shrek at all in any way beside being green. His head shape is exactly how they have always been a round triangle and his nose in this shot is non existent except the vents even the lips are less pronounced why? because the lighting and his expression.

Actually, the maquette of Leo doesn't look exactly like the film shot. It's subtle, but if you pay attention, it will get more noticeable.
Look at the maquette and you can draw a circle around the nose and mouth. It has a somewhat pronounced design as though that area of the face protrudes a bit, which looks like the more traditional "beak" area of the face.
The final product doesn't have this almost at all. The curves on either side of the mouth, defining where the cheeks are, gives it the more human and less beakish look.
Can't really edit this right now, but just look at the middle pic, not the numbered ones. Notice how the nose is more of an overall curve extended past just where the nostrils are? That's more of the indication I get from the maquette (though admittedly the image is still more pronounced than the maquette as well) and gives a much better blended design mixing turtle beak with human features.
http://cdn.screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/Leonardo-Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-2014-Traditional-Design.jpg
And also, yeah, the Halloween mask actually does look exactly like the movie version. It's just a solid coat of green with no texturing. It's the same structure, minus all the detailing. Which honestly just emphasizes the poor quality of that mask.

I mean they have a base Model for the face and they just emote with that model its not like they change the proportion for each new shot no they take the mocap build a model, then use the model.
And im sorry But i totally disagree the Mask looks nothing like him maybe a vague recognition but that it. The textures are off, the colors are off, the shape is off, the nose is off, the eyes are off, the mask is off. What does that leave up a green face that it.

But I also hate that some people are already defending it like there's no possible way it could be bad. Lets just wait and see the movie.

Like I said, the textures and colors are off, and I'll agree the shape of the head (more vertically stretched)
But the nose is the same, the mask is the same but less detailed, the lips are the same. It's not like the mask has no resemblance whatsoever. It's a lousy cheap mask, but it's not a random green face with no resemblance to the movie. You're deluding yourself if you think it's that much of a complete difference.
And the eyes are off? Seriously? There aren't eyes....the mask has eye holes. ;)

i'd hesitate to say audiences don't care for tmnt . if it bombs I'd say its either because of option a or the fact that you barely see any movie sites or other places like that saying anything positive about this thing. the most optimistic thing iv heard is "who knows maybe it will be good." a lot of people might be scared away from it.

and yours are legitimate reasons, because the directors, the designs, and the cast all have a major impact on the final product...
but the idiots being dismissive because of hair color, frustrate the crap outta me.

This kind of Mentality IS kind of Confusing I get not liking the version
But when people say "what the hell were they thinking" Um well
What were any of these people thinking

All highly praised Very popular, never bashed TMNT redesigns. Ones that are very similar to what we got. And yet People talk so much Crap about the one we got
"Oh mikey looks like Shrek" Then the new trailer comes out And he looks fine No issue some even say he look Bad ass, But now they have to nit pick Donnie, Because hes making a face? Of course hes not going to look like that the whole time Obviously

Do you really see poutty "Jar Jar" lips in those photos NO because hes not making the same face
Not seeing your point. It's a legitimate question. And just because other artist have done freelance work where they've done similar things doesn't change what I may think about their designs. I do want to know what the hell they were thinking. I find the designs terrible but I also understand there's a creative process to this so I'm pretty curious as to why they went left instead of right.

well played samxsteal, well played. People just love to hate.
Elaborate how I love to hate. And on samxsteal's point because I don't get it, all I'm seeing is TMNT art talking about what a few people personally think looks cool not why it's wrong for me to wonder what the hell they were thinking when they went with those designs.
And if anyone posts multiple pics can they PLEASE use spoiler tags so they don't take up so much space.

I forgot to mention this before when some where ranking on Alan for not ever talking about his character and how he relates to Raphael. Well I remember awhile ago that he actually did talk about his role a little bit. Is isn't much but : http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCwQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.comicbookmovie.com%2Ffansites %2Fmovienewsandreviews%2Fnews%2F%3Fa%3D90719&ei=75ZrU-KqGYqpsQT1vIHQBg&usg=AFQjCNF6eZhGp1ToeZRGQrTOmumPNH4qJg&sig2=qMLzL53_aBY6CtuBUv-OQg

I just wants to take a moment to say (write) how great Alan seems under that interview, he is charming, funny, keeps the conversation flowing nicely and overall very charming.
I really hope he is as charismatic on-screen. I've only see him (as far as I know) as Aquaman in Smallville and that Champion guy in the second Hunger Games, and I wasn't really taken away by his performance.
And his smile, damn. He could melt a snowman with it.

dude i understand ppl not liking the designs of the turtles...but check the official TMNT facebook page - ppl are dismissing this film on the sole factor that April isnt a red-head. a red-head?!?! it kills me.
she was never one in the original films or the mirage comics, but on THIS reason alone, people are being dismissive. i had to stop reading their page because it was frustrating me how ignorant ppl were being.
She wasn't really a red-head in the Fred Wolf series. I always considered it more brown than red.

Who was the person screaming questions from the back? Was it the producer of that show that was a fan and couldn't hold it in?

i dont think its *just* about "lis-sync", but, as he mentioned more than once, about *performance*. it's about getting the expressions and nuances and facial ticks and subtle movements that are really hard to pull off on a non-mo-capped cgi creation. that helps it not fall into the realm of cg "cartoon" or uncanny valley. it really does make sense. granted, it didnt take me too long to get used to these designs, and now i think they're fine.
the only real hanging dismay i have about this is megan fox as april, but even then, im kinda over all the drama. i'm just stoked to kick back with a bucket of popcorn, wearing my colored bandana 3d glasses in august and enjoy the tmnt on the big screen again!

Of course Alan Ritchson is gonna defend the movie. I mean he's never gonna say "Yeah the movie I'm currently a part of suck eggs lololo"?
He'll never find work in Hollywood again if he does that.
He's not a complete idiot like Shia LeBouf.

They're more than likely going to spend most of the second act captured, they're probably little more than extended cameos...

Noel has posted photos, Karai as well, Pete i haven't heard anything and Jeremy nothing either except fan account of meeting while they were on down time nothing substantial

Im sorry but i seriously doubt that with the Emphasis they're putting on Family and brother hood that coming from every one Kevin, ALan, Nemec, Johnathan, All have Emphasized Brother hood and family as a main aspect of this movie.

I'd love to see a interview with Pete, he havsn't done any other work yet has he? This is his first major movie, right? Jeremy seems to have done smaller stuff, but Pete, I kinda want to hear his perspective of this project.

c) He seemed humble, funny, yet knowledgable. A long time fan of the characters.
That may be how he's comes across to you but other interviews have shown he isn't really that knowledgeable and not really what you would call a long time fan. Not that this is a bad thing or means he can't do a good but let's not make him out to be something he's not.
d) OWNED the hell out of whiny, overly nit picky fan boys.
Did he? As far as I could hear he didn't even know himself why they've gone the motion capture route but gave his personal belief of why.
His response was actually very well thought out but obviously doesn't really stand up to any scrutiny, I mean he seems to think the turtles are the first motion capture character done in this way. Again he isn't a fan or a cgi expert so no one will fault him for not knowing these things. In fact I think it's great he was smart enough to formulate a good sounding defense of something he knew little about.
Because as if adding lips is so ridiculous, even though when the turtles mutate they take on human characteristics and proportions. Ritchson is right, you sacrifice beaks as a necessary aesthetic evil for better more nuanced, layered, believable acting. I appreciated his defense.
What's interesting is that he seemed to think that ditching the rounded "beak" look is a sacrifice and apparently you do too so by that can I infer you don't think it's looks good either?
The idea that in his words they'll be "forgiven" for giving them human faces seems to suggest that he (and apparently you) believe it is a necessary sacrifice to convey actual emotion but as others pointed out there are other (arguably better) methods to accomplish this. Not to mention that if anything in this movie requires showing the level of emotion in the non-human characters like the 1990 movie I'll be very surprised.
You're not a fan of the franchise if you can't grasp the fact each new incarnation adds it's own spin to things.
Tell that to Batman Begins or most of the better received Marvel movies or the Lord of the Rings which have thrived by being as accurate to the source material as possible.
I might be inclined to say you're not a fan of the franchise if you can't grasp that there are certain fundamentals that if aren't there it doesn't work.
I'm not explicitly talking about their faces either or even things like Eric Sachs. If this movie were asking to accept one major change it might be okay but they're throwing a helluva lot that fans like about the franchise.

Yeah, but so did the 80's series and a lot of people loved that, although for most it was their introduction to the franchise.
