http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Summer-Movie-Box-Office-Predictions-Blockbusters-Bombs-42837-p4.html
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Platinum Dunes has given the heroes in a half shell an expensive big screen treatment. Two major elements really hold this film back, however (three if it's terrible). One, do the Turtles really have any mainstream appeal right now? The constantly-rebooted show is never exactly a breakout hit with TV audiences. And 2007's TMNT grossed an underwhelming $95 million, quickly forgotten by the fanbase. Two, look at those turtle designs. The trailer has played to much confusion as people seem to be put-off by these edgy, frankly unsightly-looking Ninja heroes. A major marketing challenge has been created by the sight of these things: international audiences may not care, though and they'll help buoy a worldwide gross around $120 million.

They seem a bit misinformed... I doubt the fan base "forgot" TMNT, just because it under grossed, it seems many fans remembers it, for better or worse. And constantly rebooting, yes TMNT have three animated series so far, but the Nick show seems to be fairly popular.
And cruddy designs didn't stop Transformers.

Did this idiot really say the Turtles have no mainstream appeal in TV?
Is this guy completely oblivious to the ratings hit the Nick cartoon is? How could this moron make such a comment? Maybe if it was made in 2010 after the 4kids series ended and nothing was going on he might have a point.
The franchise is the most popular it's ever been since 1993 right now, what is this deranged moron talking about? Goddamn casual.

I also don't agree with the Article, TMNT is as popular as ever, Not only with the new generation, But it still has a fanbase that spans generations since the 80s.

The guy who wrote that article is a casual who has no clue. What constantly rebooted TV series?
The franchise has only had 3 cartoons all of which were successful. It's uninformed casuals like this who make my blood boil. At least do some research about the franchise before shooting your mouth off about a franchise.
About the only thing I can agree with is the movie will do poorly in the box office.

Wow what an idiot.
I don't bother reading predictions on which movie bombs or does well at the box office because it ends up the other way round, Like Trancendence which I heard was good turns out it was a flop and Spiderman 2 didn't exactly do well at the opening weekend only got about 95 million in the US and was predicted to do more than that.

.........WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE lmao. I mean really? Yea.. everyone hates the new nick show lol. This is good though this is good.. When the movie does well in SPITE of having absolutely ZERO faith from the trendist media they will learn to NEVER bet against the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles EVER again. They all did the same thing with the first movie and they ended up putting their foot in their mouth. I am SICK of the negativity! It's like a virus!! The media feeds on negativity like a parasite. I've had it up to HERE " I'm putting my hand up 2 my neck in case you're wondering : )" Sorry I haven't taken my meds yet..

"Never exactly a breakout hit with TV audiences"... except for, you know, the fact that the Fred Wolf series started a cultural phenomenon and the new Nick series is having huge success with kids and adults. But nope, never a hit.

So a $95 million dollar gross on a film that cost 35 million to make is "underwhelming"?? If an animated TMNT film that got barely any marketing can make $95 million worldwide, then a big budget Michael Bay live action film is going to make bank!! It doesn't matter whether it's a good movie or not, people will go see it. Also, the Turtles have a LOT of mainstream appeal right now due to the animated Nick show and the 30th anniversary. True, the turtles may never again be as big as they were in the late 80s early 90s but I attribute that to the fact that there is so much more programming choices on tv now so tv shows don't perform as well now as shows did back then. The Nick show is popular with kids and most of those kids parents are in their late twenties/ 30s, so they remember the OT series. I say the time is perfect for a new turtles movie.

i have to agree with this part right here, and i think it fits with alot of shows right now...especially TMNT's main contender Power Rangers...Saban brands wants MMPR money...but its just not what it used to be

He's almost as clueless as the guy from Rolling Stone. If you're taking the time to write an article about a history of "reboots", at least try to understand why they are being started again pretty much ten years apart after more than 7 seasons each. If they were never popular, then why do studios keep going back to them?

Guys, you think it's bad now, just wait till the reviews come in. And definitely expect this movie to be a major Razzie contender. I hate it that this is what is happening, but the movie magazine and online communities love to dump on Michael Bay, and I think they are going to aim really hard at TMNT for it.

I read through his other reviews. Basically it's just a list of films he doesn't care about so he doesn't think anyone else does. Yes some of the films on that list look terrible but are they going to flop??? Doubt it. I don't care about 'Blended' either but Sandler's movies rarely if ever flop. Sin City 2 is going to flop? Don't think so. It would be different if this was a list of "Movies that might suck" but he has no evidence or even good points of why he thinks these movies are going to flop at the box office.

Truth be told, this movie could end up making transformer money. It really depends on how people react to it, I know a lot of people hated the transformer movies but where already getting a 4th one.
I wouldn't be surprised if it does well, not block buster good but good enough to warrant possible sequels for sure.

It'll definitely make $$$$ for sure! No doubt about it. As much as people like to bust on Bay, the man can make some pretty bankable action flicks! I'm surprised it hasn't received more publicity than it has.
A movie like this will go beyond it's normal fanbase. You'll have US (the fans) wanting to see it, even if we don't like what they've done to the franchise. You will also have most young boys wanting to see it, as well as the action-movie crowd.
I don't see this making Transformers money...but it will definitely not be a flop financially. As to how it will fair with the critics...that's a different story! ;)

With all problems, that Bay movies has, he always knows how to make an overwhelming action. I can give him that.
People go for his movies because of the pretty picture and not because of interesting characters or story. I don't think anybody expect his movies to have that. It's an eye-popcorn. And that's why its popular.

i dont feel bays style works with turtles though...i mean it may now with the foot being military but the turtles were never about extreme action and explosions
transformers are about giant fighting robots...perfect for bay and co

Bay's style is the pollar oposite of the turtles. One is about fighting in the shadows, always being carefull not to be seen by the outside world, it's about family, the other is about EXPLOSIONS hot girl EXPLOSIONS dick joke EXPLOSIONS annoying charachter. And before you say Liebesman's directing, Liebesman is Bay's protage, they have the exact same style...

They certainly haven't shown any of that 'overwhelming action'.
What, the hummer scene? A random tower falling that we've seen in dozens and dozens of movies? A few folks thrown around? Pretty much it.
Nothing overwhelming at all. I've seen more overwhelming stuff in Direct to DVD films from the 90's (especially PM Entertainment flicks) than the tiny bits of action they've showcased so far. And considering these are Action Films at the end of the day, that's pretty sad.
I hope the makers aren't thinking that 'hummer scene' is as "Badass" as they are trying to make it seem like...because if they think that scene is one of their "Big Money Shots for the film" then they are in even worse shape than I thought.

Yep. Transformers the cartoon was popular but nowhere near as popular as the Turtles and people flock to those movies.
I would argue that the concept of giant transforming robots fighting a war is a one that has a wider appeal regardless of whether you watched the cartoon or not.
Also I think not only did an entire generation of fans wait for a live action Transformers movie non-fans had little conception of what a Transformers movie should be hence why it's easy for Bay to play those movies like he does.
TMNT is different; firstly I think the concept doesn't quite have the same hook and while there a valid story embedded in the absurd we have the powers that be constantly meddling and piece by piece changing it until it no longer resembled TMNT.
Now that is a problem because the franchise was bigger than Transformers and people do have an idea of what a TMNT movie and those characters should be but again we're faced with everything being changed.

truth be told i am trying to avoid most influences about the movie. when it comes out i'll form my opinion on it then. even Eastman essentially said he knows its a big change but hopes the nah sayer will come around and enjoy it when they see it. so personally i have no extreme feelings about the movie either way
Do i think it will bomb at the box office though. no not at all. its the TMNT, everyone excited about it will go see it and the majority of the people who think Bay will screw it up will go see it just to say "i told you so". i'm not saying it will be a great or a terrible movie but i do doubt it will Bomb simply because it is the turtles.

Michael Bay likes the turtles?
I've never heard him or anyone claim he likes the turtles. He's admitted more than once that he never liked Transformers but the concept had the potential for great visual appeal.
One thing he has said is that he dislikes comic book movies so the chances of him liking TMNT are pretty low.

First this author is probably comparing the Turtlemania popularity of the Turtles to the current lukewarm popularity (Spongebob is still currently more popular than TMNT) of the Turtles today which is unfair (it still has to make its way to the adult mainstream, which this movie is trying to do now). The Nick cartoon still has a MAJOR way to go to come close to the Fred Wolf popularity, but if you take the recent Transformers movie in 2007, there was no current Transformers cartoon during that time and Transformers still did very well despite its critically unfavorable-to-mixed reception.
Personally, I don't like the direction of this movie either (execution and Turtle designs) but Bay's associated films are always successful. This movie will be financially successfully, but critically panned (like most/all Bay-associated films).
The only way things could dramatically change is if miraculously the storywriting is superb, or the storywriting is far worse than expected for a Bay film.

I don't disagree with Cinemablend here.
They are not wrong about the 2007 movie. Come on guys, pay attention to the threads here... the 1990 movie is talked about way more than the 2007 one. Even Turtles Forever gets more discussion!!! So for them to say it was forgotten by the fanbase is not thaaaat big of a stretch (and fanbase aside it was certainly forgotten about everyone else :p).
The 2007 movie isn't very good. The turtles looked pretty good. Some of the fights were good. Otherwise it's a total wash. Story is crap. Villains are the very definition of forgettable and generic. And Splinter looked dumb as hell. Those are just my initial thoughts :P I could go on!
And you can't ignore that the designs have been very controversial. Every forum I go on that has a thread on the film... it's nonstop trashing on how the 2014 movie turtles look. I'd say bad impressions outweigh good at least 2 to 1.
Meanwhile... other examples of 2014 reboots/redesigns... such as Godzilla? Getting pretty good reception. So it's not just "internet hates everything" syndrome.
I'm not convinced it will bomb... but I'm not predicting a big success.

You might be right, but I don't think that would be a problem when there are so many fight choreography teams available in Hollywood, nowadays. Look at the current 2012 TV series, after all. Also, I kinda find it hard to imagine that in 2014, Bay and his team would completely overlook incorporating martial arts style action in a TMNT movie.

That's not what I meant to say. And it has nothing to do with old cartoon. Though scenes where Technodrome rampages through the city would have made a good foundation for the Bay-style directorship.
Bay likes to do BIG things. BIG explosions, BIG punches, BIG shootouts, e.t.c.
It could fit some Turtle villains, but not Turtle themselves. As I see it, they are martial artists, not Hulks, not Transformers. They are about precision and efficiency, rather than BIG BOOM and PWANCH!!.
What we seemingly will have in the new movie, leaning to the other of the spectrum and I don't like it.
I predict I will see this movie and not care about the money.

I think perhaps a lot of people are wanting to see the comics characterization of the TMNT on film, something that's never really been done. The original movie was a decent blend of comics and cartoon, but with Hollywood's "er mah gerd, everything gritty reboot" a lot of people were hopeful for a more true-to-comics take.

it depends what you are defining as action...when i say "In your face action" i mean explosions destruction and loud booms, not martial arts
i just dont feel bay fits the martial arts style action
that's exactly how I feel. I think micheal bay has his niche and its big action movies with cool cars, military hardware, gunplay, epic destruction and hot chicks. I can see why you would look at that guy for something like transformers where the cool cars and military vehicles turn into giant robots who have shootouts with each other but it doesn't seem to make him a fit for what should at its core be a martial arts movie about a band of brothers
I think perhaps a lot of people are wanting to see the comics characterization of the TMNT on film, something that's never really been done. The original movie was a decent blend of comics and cartoon, but with Hollywood's "er mah gerd, everything gritty reboot" a lot of people were hopeful for a more true-to-comics take. that's slightly what I was hoping for. personally I didn't want or expect them to go full on mirage but I was hoping for something that matched the tone of 2k3 at least
Completely subjective (gutter) Internet “journalism” at its best. Also, a lot of it is just plain wrong. I’m not saying TMNT will be a big hit, but it may be a moderate one. Either way, I honestly cannot see a scenario were it will outright flop. It could underwhelm, for sure, but not bomb spectacularly. That’s not happening.

As far as the idea of "in-your-face" action, if you look to the sci-fi aspects of the Turtles, versus the earlier ninja-esque stories, the Turtles are loaded with visual appeal, action and explosions. I mean, if this version leans more towards the sci-fi aspects of the Turtles, shadowy/ninja elements will be fewer and far between, especially if we enter into Triceraton territory, which totally needs to happen.

and thats what frustrates me...out the gate, BEFORE this movie even comes out, sites like this, are perpetuating this cycle of negative press, all in an effort to generate hits. and the thing is...they are generally misinformed, and in turn are misinforming others. at least here, we fans, have the chance to speak about the good and the bad, do our best to back things ups. but the vast majority of traffic to these forums are fans to begin with. negative press is gonna kill this movie before it ever has a chance. if this movie bombs let it be because it actually sucks, but not because some idiot reporters decided to drive traffic to their sites by bashing on films that are popular to bash on.

Well, in Bay's defense (which I don't understand with this movie, since he's not the one directing it;)) in TF2, the forest fight between Optimus and the other Decepticons was mostly a hand to hand with swords being used at that moment, and it was a kick ass fight. In IMAX, it was effing AWESOME, so I do think he is more than capable in shooting a good fighting scene.
But still I would have preferred Matthew Vaughn instead, because he can shoot action scenes, create an intense atmosphere, and knows how to direct teenagers to act like teenagers. But alas, we got what we got, so maybe next time.

God damn those people who don't spend every waking moment of their lives worshipping Ninja Turtles like you do. Seriously CyberCubed, I'm getting sick of you referring to anyone who isn't a TMNT ubermind as a "casual".
And from an outsider's perspective, TMNT is "constantly rebooted". There was the original cartoon, some time went by, the 2K3 one, only three years went by, and now the Nick one.
Like someone said, this movie is like Pacific Rim. It's for stupid young people who rate movies based on their CGI effects. It'll do moderately well.

Tmnt is like Star Wars, sex, and pizza.
Even if it's bad, it's still pretty good and most certainly better than nothing.
If the new Bay movie falls short of fan expectations, the fact that it's getting another big screen treatment is good for the franchise and only helps to secure it's future, so we can continue to enjoy new iterations of TMNT in the years to come. I'm staying patiently optimistic that it will be a decent movie at worst and might even hit the higher notes for the harder core fanbase. I agree with the comment that Bay's style is definitely better suited to Transformers and would love to see the new TMNT done by a director with a more character focused style, but I'm still excited to see this regardless. :)

Considering Spider-Man's been out for 2 weeks and it's only 200 million shy of Winter Soldier, I consider ASM2 to be doing quite well, despite falling from #1 spot in its second weekend.
Honestly, holding #1 for two weeks in a row is getting more and more difficult. People are going to see opening weekend more now, I think, especially with the 7PM Thursday night showings for a Friday night release.
And I wouldn't be surprised if part of that is because of the "next week is ___ so we better see ___ this week."
ASM2, gap, Godzilla, Days of Future Past for me.
NinjaPug
05-11-2014, 07:09 AM
ASM2 isn't doing well at all especially domestically. It will easily be the lowest grossing Spider-Man film. Even if it keeps it's current pace at the BO (which isn't a given) it'll barely make a profit for Sony.
I've seen folks say they wouldn't be surprised if Sony pulled the plug on continuing this version of the franchise. I don't think there's any chance they sell the rights back to Marvel though. Since the only money Sony makes from Spider-man is the BO then I'm expecting some lower budget Spidey films in our future.
SwiftNinjaFox
05-11-2014, 08:24 AM
But again, domestic box office means nothing anymore.
In 2 weeks, Amazing Spider-Man 2 has made 460 million dollars. That's more than half what Amazing Spider-Man made its whole theatrical run. In 2 weeks.
It's going well internationally, and really the worldwide box office is what matters now. Studios are locked to 'murica anymore.
Spidey has recouped their budget and doubled it. They're 100% in the black after 2 weeks.
And again, Captain America has been out longer and is about 200 million ahead of Spidey, yet that's a resounding success and Spidey is a failure?
I just don't get it....
NinjaPug
05-11-2014, 09:15 AM
I agree that international box office is huge these days. However, studios see a lot less of the money earned overseas than they do domestically. I read somewhere that studios may only see 15-20% of the international box office due to tariffs and exchange rate fluctuations.
To says they're in the black isn't accurate at all. Their production and marketing budget was approximately $450 million. Just because the global box office is over that it doesn't mean they're in the black. Deadline is reporting they need to make over $750M just to turn a small profit.
Why is Cap 2 considered a success while ASM2 isn't? One, much lower budget - $170M production budget compared to $255M production budget. Not sure what Cap 2's marketing budget was but I'm sure it was significantly less than ASM2's ~ $200M. Two, compare the box office of their previous films. ASM made $752 globally which ASM2 will be lucky to reach. Cap 1 made $371M. That's close to double the original. Cap is a growing franchise while Spidey is not. Studios expect to make more off sequels. Following these trends what do you think the box offices will look like for the 3rd film in their respective franchises. Cap is coming off a widely loved movie plus the Avengers sequel. Spidey is coming off the lowest rated/reviewed Spidey film ever.

that's my problem with Hollywood Blockbusters in general, really. It's all spectacle, and if you take five minutes to step back look at what's really going on.....the whole thing splits at the seams.
When you look at a film with a promising premise, and a great cast and crew like Elysium (coincidentally released last year in the same slot as TMNT this year) it's filled with action and spectacle and explosions and people's head blowing up. But you don't even need to take 5 minutes to see how hamfisted the message ended up being presented, mush less how non-senseicle (did i make that up?) the whole thing ended up being. (why couldn't the rich people just give the poor people on Earth one of those beds and they wouldn't have to worry about being "invaded"?)

Disappointing thing about Man of Steel to me was that the set up was like the entire concept of Superman was right there on a silver platter and they didn't capitalize on it.
Amidst all that chaos, with so many people in danger, Clark could have been trying to save people only to get wailed on by Zod every time and every time he fought Zod, people could have been shown (and him see them) being hurt or killed.
It was RIGHT THERE to really build tension of this fight being a no-win situation. Hell, even have him try to lure Zod away only for Zod to take that opportunity to direct his attention on people. Make it damn clear Superman is struggling with no way to truly win.

Because the outfit is so obvious, that's what makes it effective. It's why Lex Luthor never realized Superman is Clark Kent, despite the fact that he had people tell him that in the earlier. People tend to not believe that someone with that amount of power would pretend to be normal.
It's a situation of the obvious being too unbelievable.

You mean you want this?:
"He's the hero that heroes aspire to be. I terrorize criminals. He gives people hope."
Honestly the departure from that wasn't what bugged me so much. I see what they were doing. He screwed up. He wasn't Superman, he was just Clark/Kal-El facing the impossible his first day on the job. I GET what they were going for and what they were going for is great, it works.
The execution of what they were going for didn't work for me.
But they can make good use of it going forward. Because people died and it's Superman's fault. Metropolis is devastated and it's Superman's fault. No, it's not Zod's fault, it's Superman's for not stopping it. Superman did the best he could? That wasn't good enough. This is on him. That's a good point. Everyone has all these huge expectations of Superman when they forget that this was basically his first day on the job. He didn't have years of comics, stories and overall legend backing him up. He had someone just as powerful as him, but with more battle experience all up on his face, all while devices around the world were destroying the planet and screwing up the gravity. I just think they failed to follow through with what was already established in the film. Clark has been saving people whenever he could, even as a child and all the way to adulthood.
I've said before but I'll keep preaching it:
Man of Steel failed me because Clark should have been saving people from debris and destruction in the final act and getting his face pounded by Zod for it. He should have fought Zod and SEEN people suffer for his lack of effort to help them. It should have been a struggle: save people, Zod wins. Fight Zod, people die. Build up that ongoing struggle and make it clear that it's hopeless to stop Zod and save everyone so you really have Superman pushed to the limits of desperation. Plus, a callous Zod trying to kill people to keep Superman where he wants him would have better set up for that final "I'll never stop" moment.

Yeah, but he would punch Zod through a building and just go after him. Instead, he could have punched him through the building, then noticed debris falling and go down to save the people it would crush only for Zod to come back down on him.
Or have Superman try to lead Zod away, Zod realize it and, evil as can be, just let Superman fly off and turn his attention on the people nearby, drawing Superman straight back into the fight right there amongst the people.

I don't agree with this article. Sure, some of us who grew up with the Turtles, have grown up and sometimes we don't have time to sit down on our behinds all day and be true fans to not only Turtles, but other nerdy likes and franchises. But who can truly forget something that resonated so deeply when we were kids, as Turtles?
And now, in this generation, kids are not only exposed to the old Turtles, but the Nick show that airs now.
Disagree with this article. I will be HIGHLY surprised if this doesn't do well in box offices. Yeah, even my nephew said "those Turtles look too big" when he first saw them. But now it's like, "OMG they kick so much ninja butt Auntie! Now I know why they're so big!"
