Once again, the turtle designs look so cool. I believe some of those pictures are of the on set models. Shredder looks menacing. Splinter is cute, yadda ... yadda.
Everything so far is great, has me feeling anticipation for a big screen turtles property like I'm a small child again.

He seriously looks just like a more detailed image of 2003 Splinter in that image. It's a shame they didn't go with that design.

Yeah, comparing the art to the toy, it seems they are very different designs then just copy paste extra hair bits. But that movie toy looks atrocious, guess well see for sure then the new trailer hits, the Kappa said in a diplomatic tone.

Is it considered "leaked" if the guy was given a copy specifically for showing people pictures?
Its a review copy so i would say no they gave it to him to review
I don't know for sure. It was on a popular comic book movie site. Who knows though, at least the guy shared it with the fans. It seems to be an authentic "making of" movie book of some kind. At least he didn't make drawings then only selectively hand them out to specific people.

Meh, still look meh. Can't decide if the clothes or face change is what really puts me off more, to be honest. I'm still unclear on Raph in that photo though. His plastron looks to be gray/black. Not sure why as it clearly isn't in the trailer.
However, you are indeed correct. That picture of Leo's face is from the maquette and that Raphael is also the maquette. Too bad they don't have pictures of all the maquettes from front/side/back. Despite thinking they look pretty bleh and despite hating their clothes the statues STILL looked pretty damn cool. I'd like to see them in full.
No way in hell I'd shell out $250 a piece for them. These movie turtles will NEVER EEEEEEEEEEEEEVER stand up to the tried and true comic maquettes. ;)
Though it would be interesting if the movie maquettes special edition version came with more comic inspired heads to swap to which you prefer (the original maquettes heads could be swapped for colored vs red bandannas. Raph's special edition was an alternative hand holding the sai to throw with the challenge note wrapped around it). Though that would mean sculpting two heads for each, not a recolor bandannas. Still, it would be a way to make more happy...though with those always being limited runs, I'm sure they'd sell out without such cross-fanbase appeal.
This is also all assuming/speculating that they would produce said maquettes for release in the first place.
Damn, splinter looks awesome! At least they got one character right.
He does look awesome, but that picture isn't what they went with. :/

Hard to tell for sure on that picture wearing the Shredder glove, but it looks different than the concept art. Extremely different.
Makes me wonder if they ARE going with that being an artifact from Oroku Saki's time in feudal Japan while Fichtner has a modernized tech-based Shredder suit.

I agree. Perhaps he has artifacts of Saki's. Like the helmet, etc. Most of it looks like something a samurai would wear in the past. Some of the suit looks very old and unusual for something that you could create today. If I had to guess, he incorporates the artifacts into the tech-suit.

First of all, not a top knot in any one of those. That's nowhere near as pronounced and deliberate as the film's design. Well, generic stereotypes are pretty Michael Bay, so I'm going with his involvement on making Splinter more cliche in appearance.

If splinter mutated with mustache and hair, why didn't the turtles? They are teanagers, they should have facial hair...
I'm beginning to agree that they may well be going with an IDW angle of possible reincarnation. It's the only way I can conceive of Splinter and the Turtles having any Japanese cultural influence.
That's what bugs me most about the Splinter design. It's just so ridiculously convenient that Splinter's mutation gave him just the right sprouts of hair to grow a top knot and Fu Manchu 'stache.
To be fair, maybe he's let his fur grow out intentionally to develop the style over the past 17ish years? ;)

Well, we don't know what his involvement is so far. We just know he was involved in a project to supposedly create heroes. How the ooze came to be and what his involvement is remains unclear thus far.

they would really have to expand that involvement for the movie because in the comic it begins and ends with studying it for awhile to see what it can do. so far its been a pretty minor detail. and I'm not seeing so many ties to different sources. mostly just the fred wolf toon and maybe the nick toon with the shell riser reference and the turtles body types I guess

I'd scratch the Utrom references. Currently we don't really have anything to suggest that's going to be in the movie at all.
Where's the mural connection to 2k3 and IDW?
Mostly it's Fred Wolf influences with a splash of comic here and there and a lot of original design.
I'll add one in place of Utrom Shredder (no foundation for that yet). Shredder using modern technology connected to ancient origins. That's a big 2k3 plot device. Less so in IDW, but there too.
Karai could just be a fan nod rather than any real inspiration from earlier sources. Wait and see for now to really get a feel for that.

Kevin Specifically Saying the this movie it "heavily Tied in the current TMNT mythos" There is plenty people just wont except it
Just like chances are your going to write this off as well as other that fine but it doesn't mean its not their
well no I won't write it off ill just say some of these are more speculation and not really concrete. also I don't think karai qualifies as a reference as she's been a main character in every tmnt universe but one. and that thing on donnies back does not look like a shout out to image

Something that stand for honor and tradition, With heavy influences in Japanese culture and history, suddenly becomes to much? no im not saying that's fine either as its much more exaggerated there than it is usually. I'm saying that that's approaching the stereotype line and the movie just hopped over it riding a motorcycle while dunking a basketball. and it may stand for honor and tradition but the idea of a giant rat doing up the top of his fur in a top knot is pretty silly

As much as evidence seems to keep suggesting Utrom Shredder in this film, my gut feeling is still that we won't be seeing that. I don't know why. Even the Blue Door script was determined to make Shredder an alien disguised as a human, yet I keep clinging to the idea that this whole theory is the result of us looking too far into things.
It's probably just because I hate Utrom Shredder.

It's unfortunate, IMO, because Utrom Shredder was my LEAST favorite part of the 2K3 series. It takes sooooooo much away from the mythology, to me.
However, that's what we're getting here. They are pulling aspects from the entire 30 year history of the TMNT - and this is the main thing they are taking from 2K3.

im betting the following takes place...
1) the foot start doing their thing in the city
2) they get their a**es handed to them in the subway by the turtles, April is there
3) they, the turtles, chase her down, and try to explain what's what
4) she faints
5) discouraged the turtles make their way down to the sewers, and have the conversation we page from the leaked script page
6) pissed, Raph takes off
7) the foot, and subsequently the Shredder gets word of what happened, and how they were taken out
8) they, the foot, raid the sewers, and start this colossal fight with the turtles
9) the turtles are overwhelmed by sheer number, and ultimately bound
10) Shredder in full armor reveals himself, at which point so does Splinter
11) Splinter is overpowered, and thought to be dead, so they leave him, and escort the others off to the snowy mountain area
12) Raph returns, see the destruction, maybe even talks to Splinter, who we discover is not dead, but severely wounded
13) Raph seeks out April, and she and Vernon help Raph find the snowy mountain location
14) they save the other turtles, and together, make their escape (es-cah-peh)
15) they come back to the city...
16) final showdown with shredder, who reveals himself to be...an utrom
17) he monologues about their destiny, and how the ooze was his creation so by default, he is really their father, and that they should join him
18) they reject the idea, they fight, they win.

I thought the same, which he kind of does in the concept rendered art we've seen with the huge forearm guards and blades off them.
This movie is such a weird reversal for me. I get more excited for it as people speculate on here, then each time I see something official my excitement just plummets. Then I start convincing myself to give it a chance and start getting excited, then the next official piece shoots it down again.

Maybe, I guess, but just going purely off the image I don't like the idea of the turtles not being a unique accident. The idea that there are more of them, be it alien race or mystic creatures or whatever lessens them to me. What connections? There's nothing to really report on....yet. There's just things we can speculate on. Until the movie's out, it's hard to really connect all the Easter egg dots.
Speaking of the old movies, though, I've always wished there was the level of behind the scenes that we get today. There was A LOT going on in the sewer lair in the first movie that we never even got a glimpse of.
Having recently re-read the first three collection Ultimate hardbacks and rewatching the original movie on Monday, I did realize something I never noticed before. The farm scenes when April is writing her journal are straight from the comics.
Mikey is beating on a punching bag.
Raphael is standing on top of the roof at night (though he yells in frustration rather than silent vigil)
Leo is spending his time in the woods.
Of course the Don/Casey scene replaced Raph/Casey, but that one is pretty well known from the comic inspiration.
Neat single scene comic references I had never noticed before.

I agree. Perhaps he has artifacts of Saki's. Like the helmet, etc. Most of it looks like something a samurai would wear in the past. Some of the suit looks very old and unusual for something that you could create today. If I had to guess, he incorporates the artifacts into the tech-suit.

I agree with you. I think Sachs is obsessed and that he has the Suit/artifact. But I also think that he is being operated by Krang or an Utrom. Here's what it says on the TMNT Wiki page, " think of the scroll "
In Japan circa 300 AD, a powerful demon THREATENS THE PEOPLE. In an attempt to stop him, the EMPEROR OF JAPAN RECRUITS POWERFUL WARRIORS: the FIVE DRAGONS, who clad themselves in armor enchanted by DRAGON SPIRITS. The demon appeared to be defeated by one of the dragons, OROKU SAKI. However, before the final blow was delivered, the demon contacted Saki on a mental plane and offered him great power. Saki agreed, allowing the demon's soul to INHABIT HIS BODY. Reborn as the Tengu Shredder, Saki SEIZED CONTROL OF THE LAND. THE FOUR REMAINING DRAGONS (the Ninja Tribunal) TRAINED AND ACQUIRED MORE POWER TO DEFEAT THEIR FORMER FRIEND, which they were eventually able to do. They SEALED AWAY HIS BODY IN A CASKET AND HID IT AWAY, AS WELL AS THE SEPARATED HELMET AND GAUNTLET. The Ninja Tribunal began a seemingly eternal watch to make sure the three ARTIFACTS would never be reunited, as doing so would revive the Tengu Shredder. The Tengu Shredder was not forgotten by followers, the Heralds, who had long since sought to restore their master, but were impeded by being under the control of the Utrom Shredder and then Karai. However, they successfully managed to manipulate the Turtles and Agent Bishop into setting them free, allowing them to proceed with resurrecting their master. The Ninja Tribunal recruited the Turtles and four human fighters as their Acolytes to retrieve the artifacts first. Unfortunately, the Heralds were ultimately successful and the Tengu Shredder returned
Now I'm not sure about this "demon" supernatural thing. But I think it could be the same Utrom that operated the artifact in Saki during feudal era Japan. Just a guess though.

Me said that. Me no Kappa! Me Swift! ;) I ment the Japanese Kappa like the demon not Calling you Kappa sorry "Kappa, All i gotta say." hahaha
Maybe, I guess, but just going purely off the image I don't like the idea of the turtles not being a unique accident. The idea that there are more of them, be it alien race or mystic creatures or whatever lessens them to me. But I'm also not a fan of the whole manifest destiny crap Hollywood is in love with in all sorts of different genres.
Yeah i get that But i could have just been a legend as well Kappa ANd other demons were a mjor part of Japanese mythology rat demons too.
What connections? There's nothing to really report on....yet. There's just things we can speculate on. Until the movie's out, it's hard to really connect all the Easter egg dots.
All the one i listed earlier Whether or not the connection are strong the fact that they're their is nice. Also little things like Konji every where in the lair the chalk drawing of child turtles with their names scribbled on the wall as well and japanese characters,
Speaking of the old movies, though, I've always wished there was the level of behind the scenes that we get today. There was A LOT going on in the sewer lair in the first movie that we never even got a glimpse of.true
This and the Final fight are the two biggest thing the movie has to the comic that i love.
Ahhh, I hadn't seen that one.Yeah some of these videos are hard to track down bogged down by copy videos, trailer, fan trailer, reviews, rants, and praises.
Yeah, he has a very distinct style, but I don't see it in that Shredder drawing. It just doesn't look like his style to me.IDK sure does to me Especially when looking at the covers to the tmnt Volumes

This is a guess but if Splinter does stay at the lair and The Foot or Shredder don't know of his existence there yet. They could cut to shots of Splinter meditating. Thinking of his sons, thinking..of the past.

They did? What were they?
In the Dark Knight there is a scene where the Joker has a meeting with criminals at a conference table where he does a "magic trick" with the pencil through the eye. This is a little nod to Batman when the Joker has a meeting with criminals at a conference table and electrocutes the guy with the hand buzzard.
Also in the Dark Knight there is a stand off in the street where Batman is racing towards the Joker who is just standing there saying "Hit me" and Batman swerves and misses him at the last minute. This is a tribute to the first Tim Burton movie where Batman is flying towards the Joker who is saying "come on" and Batman misses him. There is also the scene at the end where the Joker fights Batman on a roof top and falls to his death (Although they changed the ending because of Heath Ledgers death.)
In DKR there is the ballroom scene where Bruce Wayne dances with Selina Kyle which is a nod to the scene in Batman Returns when the two dance. Also the fact that Bane lives and operates out of the sewers which is where the Penguin lived in Batman Returns.
These are just little nods for the hardcore fans, not direct scenes lifted. I remember these from a website I saw. I think there were a few more little things but I don't remember what they were.

Mikey:
Ha. Doodie
Raph:
Some "duty" - Risking our necks every night for surface-dwellers who'd lock us up in a zoo, or worse, if they knew we existed. You saw how that chick looked at us......
{stepping INTO THE LIGHT}
...like we were freaks
The other turtle fallow raphael into the light. Leonardo shakes his head, disapointed in his brother. And is the first time we've really seen the turtles out of the shadows. They look like heroes, but i different kind of hero. They don't relish their victory. They're just teenagers, They're Freaking tired. And they want to unwind
Mikey:
Maybe if we save enough people, if we do enough good, we'll be accepted up there, Whaddya think.....?
Donnie:
Grow up Mikey....
Leo:
I think... That we must be doing this for a reason. I just dont know what that reason is...
The turtle shuffle into their lair. Leo keeps his armor and Swords strapped on, but the other start slowly tossing off their armor and their weapons
Splinter: The bonds of family are stronger than steek...
The turtles spin back..As SPLINTER step out of the dark. The humanoid version of the lab rat we met in OUR opening. Mutated and wizened, with brown hair, gray in places, scoliosis back, four feet tall, carrying a walking stick

Batman scenes.
I don't think those are intentional nods to previous films. I think that's a real stretch to suggest a dance is because they wanted to refer to Batman Returns. The Joker with mobsters seems fairly standard too.
The Joker face off on the street seems possible, but could also be coincidental.
They just seem more like coincidence than the writer or director intentionally wanted to parallel the earlier films.
Raph:

This "Splinter chose me" conversation is altered, but also from the Blue Door script.

Sounds like something out of TMNT to me.
The descriptive of the scene has nothing to do with the portrayal of the characters or the "feel" of something out of TMNT, though. "They're freaking tired" is just the script writer's style. You saw it in the Blue Door script as well. Any time a character swears, it's cut off, but they like using "freaking" or swearing in the descriptions of the actions.
It seems like lazy writing to me, at least when reading through the script. I don't see how that conveys anything more than "They're tired" or "They're exhausted."

Whats so bad about "they're tired"? They could be "tired" from fighting. Literally. How would that be a bad thing? It probably means there will be a ton of action. I like that they are going with a more serious tone with them. They might not succeed and it may not come out well but it's being attempted.

The whole "freaking tired" discussion, I think for me, stems largely from the Blue Door script as a whole. I actually agree, it's not all garbage (I wouldn't be doing my rewrite on it if it were), but there are a lot of places where it's just bad writing, the dialogue and the description/action lines.
In some cases it just adds nothing to it. The swearing is thrown in for no reason. I'm actually removing it for, what I feel, is more appropriate descriptives.
And yes, eyef*cks, is probably my most hated, snarl-inducing inclusion in the script. I want to print those pages out and burn them instead of just replacing the word in my version.

It's just a painfully awful line, IMO. It's obviously not like that one line will singlehandedly ruin the movie (although the image of headlines reading "Duty/Doodie Joke Brings End To Ninja Turtles Franchise" is kind of hilarious) but being it's a part of our first taste of the film's dialog, and it's an eye-roller. It's a legit concern.
The movie wold certainly win some points back if Raph smacks Mikey in the head for that joke.

Yea, it will play off better if the movie shows a little self awareness for how silly the line is. Honestly, I'm in my 20s and I still sometimes point out when someone accidentally says doodie. Not all the time though, but it's definitely something I'd do jokingly around my brothers.

The mask line from the trailer was pretty funny so at least it has that going for it so far.

I actually think the doodie line could be kinda funny if he said it in the background or something. It would only work in contrast with Leonardo's stark expression and the seriousness of his conversation with Raph.
I know it sounds kinda immature, but remember, these are teenagers and it is Mikey.
Honestly, I kind of sighed at that line because it worries me of the overall tone of the humor. Though I'll admit, it's largely biased because of Transformers. I thought the crude/immature humor was painfully out of place in that movie.
I can see it work if used subtly in TMNT, particularly with Mikey. If it's more of a background snirk and under his breath statement, it would seem like Mikey to me. Honestly, bad dialogue CAN sometimes be saved by how an actor delivers it.
Tenagers? How big then they will be when they become fully adult, they are like 15, right?
They were 17 in Blue Door. I would expect that more than 15.
The mask line from the trailer was pretty funny so at least it has that going for it so far.
While people focus in on the face in that scene as a source of outrage, a LOT of people, even those who hate the look, have agreed that's a pretty good portrayal of something Mike would do.

That's...my worry. Hopefully not. Honestly, The Blue Door script's humor wasn't my biggest gripe. Some lines were bad, but the humor was better than the Transformers jokes.
I can at least express relief that Mikey appears to be back to being the funny one. In the Blue Door he was more the horny one.
I'm still working on my re-read through it, but I haven't got that impression so far. Granted, there's the "hot turtle chick" at the end, but let's forget that was ever written. -_- But when he first sees April he makes the crack of Casey putting in a good word for him. I took that as a joke more than a legit interest.
No worse than the 90s film.
"She's great"
"You're tellin' me"
"An understatement as usual"
"The girl is a fox." (Nice foreshadowing, Leo *snicker*)
Or Mike kissing the TV "I'm in looooove"
Or even "!! She called me Miiikeyyy" to which Don responds with irritation.
So the first movie still still have the turtles acknowledging April as attractive, despite the Mirage comics having them with a bit more of a "she's hot....for a human"
Raph seemed to find humans weird and even kinda ugly looking in the comics. ;)

I loved that part, with Raph thinking April looked just okay. I kind of like to view the turtles as asexual. I definitely do not like seeing Mikey as the horny one. I read Blue Door (why is it called that)? but must have blocked it out.

The Nintendo GameCube was once called Project Dolphin.

Man, I cant believe that ALMOST happened. and Cameron is regarded as such an amazing director. that dialouge between 'professor' octopus and peter was just ridiculous, and TWO ppl bitten by a radioactive spider???
stuff like that just detracts from the overall 'what makes the main character special' - which is the exact same reason I had issue with most of the other mutants introduced in the Turtle-verse.

The other thing you forgot to mention was, James Cameron's take on Spider-Man had the organic webshooters, that were in the first 3 films, And not every fan was happy about that one change. Fortunately The two Amazing Spider-Man movies stayed with the original webshooters.
MajorViolence
05-09-2014, 12:39 PM
Honestly I never found the organic webshooters to be a big deal. It's kind of like Splinter's rat vs human origin, in that I have a preference (I prefer the mechanical webshooters) but I really don't think the other approach really has enough of an impact on the final product to matter.
SwiftNinjaFox
05-09-2014, 01:01 PM
I felt it did impact the final product in that Peter lost a lot of his genius intellect. Toby's Peter, due to script, didn't seem like the inventor genius the character is supposed to be.
And I always said there was no excuse for it. Raimi convinced me a guy with one hand could build a mechanical hand in the dark ages through a montage. He could convince me a teenager can design webshooters!

The way I look at it, Raimi had enough on his plate convincing people a guy could climb walls, have super strength and reflexes, and have a completely fictional spider sense. It's easy to see why the idea of Peter also inventing an adhesive that would instantly make him rich would be in danger of pushing things beyond what audiences were willing to accept at that time. Especially when the alternative is to just make it one of the powers he got from the spider bite. I'm not saying it was better or anything, I just can easily see the motives for going the organic route, and I got over it quickly.
