Anyone else notice how whenever Leonardo is alone in the OT, he is always insecure or doubting himself?

In "Take me to your Leader" Leo quits the team because he thinks he's not good enough to lead.

In the second Rex-1 episode, Leonardo runs away from Lex-1 the whole episode and April has to reassure him that he doesn't need Don's brilliance to save him or repair the robots.

In "Unidentified flying Leonardo" Leo doubts he can find April alone and has a dream of being chase by giant vegetables.

In "Snakes alive" we see Leo's fear of snakes and he has to overcome them.

In "Leonardo is Missing" Leo tries to find Shredder but winds up meeting dinosaurs and is unsure on how to stop Krang from repowering the Technodrome.

In "Lighten up Leonardo" we're shown that Leo doesn't want to bear the burden of being a leader and wants to goof off and relax when the raygun changes his personality.

There are probably some more episodes I'm forgetting. I think this Leo stood out because he was always unsure of himself and took a backseat to Donatello.

I would say yes, at times Leo did seem kinda insecure in the original cartoon. Didn't really bother me though.

He certainly seem to display the most humility to his pride compared to both cartoon versions. He is a bit of a wet blanket, with most of his lines are lectures twords the other's namely 80's Raphael. I often find he is the most short tempered when compared to the others, even more so then 80's Don. But when it comes to being insecure he and 2k3 are about the same,

One thing to point out 2k12 isn't a control freak like his other incarnations.

Would you say 2012 Leo is a control freak compared to the other two :-?

I think compared to 2003 Leo 80s Leo was more insecure but than again all Leo's have issues of worrying about being a leader or loosing his brothers. It's just one of those quality's of his :)

Um that's not exactly what happened, though you were pretty close. The episode started with Leonardo hearing a distress signal, and he was the only one in the lair at the time, so he decided to head out and look for the source of the signal. The rest of the episode focused on the other Turtles trying to figure out where he was, while Bebop went around disguised as Leonardo via holographic cloak to mess with them. Later on the Turtles discovered Shredder and Krang's evil scheme to blow the Earth off it's axis using some energy cells from a tunneler, which just so happened to belong to the dinosaur creatures who sent the distress signal Leonardo was following.

First I don't think Leonardo took a "backseat" to Donatello, I just think since the show was sci-fi themed, which depended on OT Donatello's knowledge, and since OT Leonardo's personality wasn't as overbearing, pridefully enjoying the leadership position, and loudly lecture-prone as 2K3 or 2012 Leonardo, that it creates the impression that OT Donatello "led" the Turtles.

Second, as Leofan26 said earlier, most leaders have this insecurity issue pop-up now and then since their talents/decisions are contributing to the fate of others. In fact, it wouldn't be normal for well-respected leaders if they didn't have this trait, because it displays their concern toward others rather than relishing the position of power.

The truth is that Leonardo was to Captain Kirk as Donatello was to Dr. Spock in this series, and there is even a line of Star Trek figures to make this parallel. Yes, Leo had these insecure moments, but otherwise he knew what he needed to do and was otherwise confident in his battles and plans.

Yes, he is insecure, which should be natural since he's the leader. He has a lot riding on him since he basically holds his friends/brothers' lives in his hands. One mistake can get them all killed. Also, he if was "perfect" he would be a boring, flat character in my opinion. His insecurities help us relate more with the character and make him more likable.

I wouldn't say he was insecure but he did have his moments of insecurity. It's only natural for everyone to doubt themselves at times, especially those who bear a lot of responsibilities. So

I did like he would deliver his lines like a cheesy silver age Super hero.
