Lucy, a film that was set to go up against Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will now release on July 25th.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2872732/?ref_=rvi_tt
This is great news to me. Lucy looks like a great movie to me, and I was conflicted on it releasing the same day as TMNT, but now it is releasing two weeks earlier. :D The only film going up against TMNT now is Into The Storm.

I thought it's a pansy sissy sounding movie.
But then I read the description. And it stars Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman. :teek: ...Okay, that got my attention, that's a contender alright. And the trailer looks nice. Definitely better than Guardians of Galaxy imo, so I'm gonna check this out.

It's nice to see other films distance themselves from TMNT for a change.. If that was a factor to begin with..

come on man, be realistic, while i am not saying TMNT will flop. you (and others) speak as if it is going to dominate the entire month of august and nothing will touch it till september
i mean when has a movie ever done that that came out so later in the summer
as for lucy..cool my gf wants to see it so now we can watch it without needing to skip a movie

That's good news, And a good move on them, There is no way they can compete against TMNT, Lucy is a new film that was going against an established franchise, With Guardians of the Galaxy and TMNT opening on in August, Lucy probably would've ended up in 3rd or 4th Place.

Wow.. O come on nothing.. chill out dude.. Are you telling me that Lucy moving to another earlier date bc they didn't want to compete with TMNT is being...unrealistic?
First of all.. what I meant by " if that was a factor" was.... if that was a factor for why they moved it at all. You misunderstood me.. AGAIN lol.
And don't be a hypocrite Mr. " Should TMNT be moved back away from GOTG? "
I guess its only "realistic" when it's the other way around and TMNT is the one being moved around? You guys can make THREAD AFTER THREAD about how Guardians will dominate the month before ANY OF THEM GET RELEASED? And you have an issue with MY post?
The bias and hypocrisy around here is ridiculous. I guess rooting for TMNT "something I clearly wasn't doing in this case but whatever" in it's own sub forum is some how wrong..
and I just post a normal sentence like I did and you get all bent out of shape.. whatever man lol

Scarlet Johansen has no powers in the Marvel Universe.
So she decided she wanted ALL DA POWAHS!
So they made Lucy! :D

Heck, this year movies, no matter their success, aren't standing at #1 for two weeks in a row.
I suspect X-Men will, but I'm not aware of any competition this weekend for it.
Lucy has the name power. I mean, without titles if you asked people "Movie with ScarJo and Morgan Freeman" vs "Movie with Tony Shaloub and Johnny Knoxville" I think I know which will win. But Lucy is just its own film, stand alone and new. TMNT is still a brand and carries the "yeah, we can take the kids to this" thought process of parents. It's a smart move to pull Lucy from opening head to head with TMNT.
Every ticket not in your film is a ticket not in your box office!

Are you suggesting that Lucy has more name power than TMNT? That more people will be more familiar with a title like " Lucy " than " Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" ?I'm not so sure. Yea ScarJo is an awesome actress and so is Morgan Freeman and the movie looks great but.. I wouldn't call it just yet.. and I don't mean to offend anyone by saying so..

I laughed out loud when I saw this trailer with Godzilla. The whole "we only use 10% of our brains" premise is ridiculous and not even true http://www.snopes.com/science/stats/10percent.asp.
If the studio is moving it up probably means it has more confidence in it than necessarily anything to do with TMNT though.

Well.. I'm not saying it was a factor for moving it that close to release but.. It is definitely in a better spot now than it was before. Imo if it were a question of confidence then i think they would have stood their ground and stayed put. But then again.. who knows why they moved it to another date.

No, no, I'm saying (or meant to say) the opposite. Name power was probably the wrong phrase. I think what I should have said was:
Lucy has more star power. If you asked people if they wanted to see a movie with ScarJo and Morgan Freeman or a movie with Knoxville and Shaloub, WITHOUT saying what the movie was, then ScarJo/Freeman would win.
But TMNT has more brand recognition and so it's wise for Lucy to NOT go head to head with it.
Sorry if I wasn't clear. :)

It's all good brotha.. I see what your saying.. and I agree with you. Id rather watch Scarlet over Fox any day of the week. But April? lol that's a different story. I love Morgan Freeman, I love it when he narrates those sci fi shows. He's a great actor. Fichtner has some pull.. esp. when playing a villain and I think Knoxville has some name power but that's about it. But that's the cool thing with TMNT.. They're being played by actors but the Turtles really hold their own when it comes to characterization. If I even worded that correctly lol, you know what I mean. I think there is plenty of room for everyone to succeed. Personally.. I would find Lucy to be more of a threat than GOTG. Even though I love Sci fi.. Lucy looks badass. Im just going to enjoy all three when the time comes

You guys want to know who the big pull characters for the TMNT film is? Leo, raph, donny and mikey. TMNT has a fan base of hardcore and "casual" fans that stretch across the globe which is has a bigger following than scar jo and morgan freeman combined.
Yea this movie doesnt have star power but the franchise alone will sell tickets.
The only factor is Mike Bay and John L. already have a winning franchise, but its on them to screw it up or not.

sadly thats just not the case anymore when it comes to hollywood
thats why Optimus Prime and Kermit the Frog play second fiddle in their own movies
its all about whose face is attached that can fill the seats
thats why the turtle look like they do, because they were more concerned with showing off the actors face than making something aesthetically pleasing
and for those that say their was no other way to do it, Smaug,Rocket Raccoon and Groot all are CGI with huge name actors attached who dont resemble them in the slightest
those actors are letting thier voices do the acting for them, because they know the characters they play shouldnt be confused with themselves

that is true, my point still stands GOTG needs big name actors because that franchise isnt as big as TMNT so that's the strategy to sell tickets. TMNT will sell tickets for what it is, if it's a good story it will be the next billion dollar movie franchise.
This movie is trying to set a new bar with the tech they have, avatar was live cgi actors in a cgi world. Turtles will be live cgi actors in a live world. lol saying the turtles are designed so that they can resemble the actors is a reach. They want the emotion to be displayed which is why they went the
route they did with the design.
Hollywood is not charity folks. Hollywood does what it does to make money. Optimus playing "second fiddle" = billion dollar franchise = winning formula why mess with it?
Turtles: world popular franchise/ advance tech to sell seats
GOTG: huge name actors to sell seats
Both have their have strategy which one will be successful, we dont know yet, how do we determine whats successful? BY which brings in the most MONEY.
Peter and laird didnt create the turtles to just put smiles on our faces, they did it to get the money out of our pockets put into their bank accounts. everything is driven by money not just hollywood.

They look good and like they belong in the setting, but so does Planet of the Apes and Gollum. I doubt this will set the bar higher for future movies. I'm not expecting 5 years from now for someone to say "Man, TMNT was the inspiration for all of this now."
You're suggesting Groot and Rocket aren't on par with the technical achievement of TMNT? Any animator will tell you fur is a PAIN. IN. THE. SHELL.

In all due respect, I can't quite get my self to agreeing with that being the reason for the turtles looks, the actors playing them aren't famous movie stars, I honestly hadn't heard of any of them before. Particularly Leo and Don's actors were completely unknown to most people. What ever the reasons for the turtles designs are, I just can't see that as one of them...

is it a stretch for me to say? yes i will admit that
but at the same time it makes me wonder how far off i am at making that assumption
i know Dons actor from a few tv shows for me its raph and leo i have no idea who they are ( and honestly not to be rude but i don't care)
Rocket and Groot look nothing like Vin and Bradly...and they have huge star power
so why not have the characters have their faces on them?
also it negates the whole "they need human faces to emote" argument is those 2 along with characters like smaug emote without human features

I agree that the turtles don't "need human faces to emote", but I still see the potential for more subtle and nuanced emotions in faces with more human characteristics. Did they over-do it? Probably a little bit, yeah. But I can see what they were trying to go for in the face-department. It's a shame to think of how little tweaking these faces would probably need to get approved by most fans...
It's certainly possible that moving Lucy to July had something to do with GotG and TMNT releasing around the same time, but it might be more likely that it's a vote of confidence for Lucy. All it takes is a quick look at the all-time box office records for July releases (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/month/?mo=07&p=.htm) and August releases (http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/month/?mo=08&p=.htm) to see that box office returns generally drop off quite a bit in August. It could simply be that Universal is hoping there's more money in an earlier release.
I agree that the "more than 10% of the brain" concept is pretty silly, but it looks like a legitimately well-made and visually stunning movie, and it's from the director of Léon: The Professional and The Fifth Element, so there are a lot of reasons for the studio to have faith in this one, and it should have a lot of goodwill from the hardcore movie fans.
GotG is (IMO) sure to be great, but it's a very unproven franchise and concept, so they may be aiming for a "sleeper hit" on that one, with good (for August) numbers, with legs due to good word of mouth and great Blu-ray/DVD sales.

I'm sure you know this, but I just want to say it. It's not all about SEEING their face on the screen. It's all about promotion, posters, and overall marketing. When their names come up and people hear they are in the movie, even if they can't see them, people/fans of that certain person are more apt to go see it.
TMNT could have easily done the same thing (and I'm glad and was actually surprised when they didn't). They could have thrown big names around to get people in the seats, especially by casting the turtles as celebrities. I don't want to see Brad Pitt as Leo, Tom Cruise as Don, Zac Efron as Raph, and Justin Bieber as Mikey (over exaggerated, I know). But, really, that would really turn me off! All I'm saying is Gaurdians of the Galaxy could have easily found 'nobody' actors to portray their characters if they had wanted to. However, I'm not faulting them, and I'm not saying what they are doing is 'criminal'. And it's not nearly as bad as Justin Bieber as Mikey.

quick delete this before someone in hollywood sees it o_0
jokes aside.... i agree with you, in reality i don't want my turtles to look like anyone but turtles..i still don't buy the "they need to look human to emote more"
it sounds like more a cop out because "everyone" dislikes the designs
especially when we have a CGI cartoon and the turtles seem to emote just fine there
i am not sure if i had been against big names voicing them if that was the original plan, i mean the 2k12 show show has some big name voice actors by todays standards so why not the movie, Biggs,Austin,Feldman, Kevin Michael Richardson, even Cipes
its not so farfetched that i could see Pitt as Raph..he has the right voice for him
if they went the stunt man/voice over dubbed route like the 90s i could imagine many big names id have no issue voicing the turtles
and i agree with what you about groot and rocket to an extent...they are using name power over looks
my point was that marvel studios could have gone the PD turtles route and gave them physical features to resemble their respective actors...but they are trusting the original designs of the characters...groot looks like he came straight out off the page

I second this ^ Perfectly put. I don't care what anyone says.. The Turtles ARE the star power in this film. The actors were chosen bc of their physical characteristic and their voices " even though 2 of them hadn't worked out". Some people are going to hate the fact that every time they look at April they're going to see Fox.. Well why would you want that for the turtles? So I'm glad that they picked "unknowns" for this film. I think they know what they are doing.
BTW Fridaynight: I loved Twister back in the 90s.. Into the storm looks like a good movie.. I thought the trailer looked pretty cool. I don't think that there are any "big name" actors in the movie but that doesn't mean much to me anyway. So I am def. gonna catch it in theatres

I'm sure Rocket Raccoon's render time is more then Groot and the four turtles combined. And if Rocket ever gets wet, like how Merida did in Brave... Those poor souls working on that. :P
But seriously, hair and fur is pain.
That's what I heard, and it's why The Golden Compass won for best CGI at the Oscars, over Transformers (which I thought what should have gotten the award)

Well, to be honest, they did stick in Johnny Knoxville in the movie to talk for Leo now. They could have gone with actual voice talents, but instead, went for a bit of a bigger name.

Well, you'd said they were trying to set a new bar with the tech they have. That's what I meant in my response; I don't think it's ground breaking. Good, sure, but not setting a new bar.
Ahhhh, as a franchise, yeah, it could reach a billion dollar mark.
I was disagreeing, actually. Peter and Laird didn't create the turtles with the intention of making lots of money. Contrary to cynical opinion, few artists and creative people are in it to get rich.
Not directed at me, but just had to respond.... "Nothin' personally, I'm just not a belieber." :3
key word "trying". Dan Marino was trying to win a superbowl championship but he never did, still one of the greatest QBs to play the game. They are "trying" i didn't say they were going to set the bar. Mike Bay said that he wants you to believe that the turtles are real, Alan Rich said the tech will allow the actors true performances to shine through. that's why they went the rout they went with the designs and the direction of Mo caps suits. I wasn't comparing them to any other movie I was stating the reasons/strategy for the design and the tech they're trying to use to pull it off. Will it work? again it remains to be seen bc all we have is 2 minutes worth of trailer footage.
Ok someone posted a fresh interview with laird on this forum. If you read it you'll learn that after the first couple issues they were already calculating how much money they could make. Did you read it? Why do you feel that they didnt create the turtles for monetary success?

Well it IS different than what was used for Avatar. It's actually "next generation" Avatar technology.
Edit: where is the new Laird interview?

Link the interview. After you have breakout runaway success, of course you start figuring out how much money you can make. But the turtles were created as a bit of a joke against one another, not "let's create something that will make us rich."
They didn't sit down and start brainstorming a way to get rich when they created the turtles. They were one upping each other on goofy ideas and then started digging the turtles and decided to expand and explore it as something of a parody of Daredevil while also taking inspiration from some of their favorite big guys.
Indie publishing isn't all about "I'm going to make something to get rich." Yes, you want to make money off your product, you want to get it out there and have people buy it, but it's rare that people set out to create something purely because of the money.
And if that's all you're after, comic books was the bottom of the barrel business for you to be trying to do it in at that time.
Eastman and Laird caught lightning in a bottle. When they realized they had a bottle of lightning and people were clamoring for it, of course they started to realize they could make a living off this and started figuring out what they could do with it. It was kind of surprising how quickly they started getting movie offers, etc.

adding to this ,i heard from a few sources over the years, that a night of Drinking and "goofing off" led to the creation to the turtles, that come morning they stumbled upon what they created
pretty sure i have an interview on VHS somewhere where Eastman admits it in a kid friendly manor
similar tales Jim Henson never wanted to be a puppeteer....he wanted to get into television as well as be a graphic designer. when a local tv station was looking for puppeteers to make a short show, he saw puppetry as his ticket into TV. sure he loved his creation the Muppets but if you follow his career you could see where his true passion was
SwiftNinjaFox

And I think that's why the Muppets became what they are. Even after he stayed with them, Henson never saw them as puppets. He saw them as characters, just like we don't see Gollum as "just CGI" but as a character today.
That's why the Muppets get interviews at red carpet events and talk shows and magazine articles being treated as any other celebrity rather than being seen as puppets.
Heck, Kermit the Frog has his own star on the Hollywood walk of fame.

And I personally was very disappointed with that. It still has nothing to do with Leo's appearance, tho. But Knoxwille was still probably just brought on board for "star power", yes.
i still don't buy the "they need to look human to emote more"
it sounds like more a cop out because "everyone" dislikes the designs
especially when we have a CGI cartoon and the turtles seem to emote just fine there
I find it a bit wrong to compare them to the Nick turtles... Those turts work in their own cartooney universe, but they don't work outside of that universe, interacting with real humans in the real world, it would look wrong as heck. How ever we can all argue about the design until we are blue in the face, but what it mostly comes down to is personal preferences and taste. Personally I can deal with the faces and to a degree see what they were aiming for, but I have big issues with other aspects of them (like their horrible "wardrobes"... still o' so cringe worthy for me, ugh...)

wasnt really comparing them..just saying the technology works to make a character emotes without the need of a human face
and that the cartoon shows us that...im sure if they wanted they could made the OOTS turtles emote just fine with the tech we got

I'm actually VERY glad we don't get the OOTS turtles in this film! Those faces creep me out way more then the PD faces! I can't quite put my finger on it... but I don't know if I should laugh or shiver when I look at them. Anyway, all just personal taste, really.

My friend almost everything is driven by money. I understand how the turtles were created but to say that P&L put it out just for ***** and giggles baffles me. Ok so they brainstormed ideas, parodied different creations so why take the additional steps to put it out there? Did they not get a loan from a relative to get it jumpstarted? You don't invest your money let only someone else's unless it's going to yield a return. Yea they didn't think it would be as successful as it is, but to say that they got it published just to warm our hearts is false.
Not saying that they were trying to scheme on how to get rich quick but to say they did it out of charity is even more delusional.
Your indie comment is a contradiction. Money may not be purely the reason why they do it but it is a motive and a goal to make money off of there product.

This is a false statement. How many fanfictions are out there where the authors have no plans to get any monetary success from it? Most do it because they love the characters and are trying other venues with those characters that canon will never allow.
Some people write and create things to create awareness of something, not to make mad money from it.
And then some, like J.R.R. Tolkien, created something because he simply thought there were no fairy tales for England at the time, and his stories grew a life of their own.

where in my statement did i say that ALL creators and artist do it for monetary gain?
Yea, I use to draw and write stories but i did it for fun just like what you are describing, but we are talking about P&L creation of the turtles.
If they were doing it just for fun why take it all the way unless it was going to yield some kind of return? Again, from what I remembered reading they took out a LOAN to get the project published. You don't borrow money to invest it into something that could potential yield a return without having an intention on it yielding a return.
No one is recanting the facts that I'm bringing up about the discussion but rather slicing up my words and making assertions on things that aren't related to my point.
If P&L's intention wasn't to make money than why take the steps they did to put the project out there? if they were doing it for fun it would've just stayed in a journal, point blank.

Success = fun, ya know.
I'm in a hip-hop group and we're always pushing things to the next level. Sure, we make money sometimes, but we invest in ourselves because want exposure, to have more opportunities to use, enjoy, and share our passion. We get more shows, more people interested in our albums, get to work with like-minded artists, etc. It's not about the dough at the core of things, it's about a better platform and experience. The same could be applied to any creative field. You want people to recognize what you do and take something from it.
So it's not unreasonable to say that E&L did it for fun (and money :trazz:).

lol I see your point, and i understand that they created the turtles out of fun but once they put it out there i feel it was more for a means of income rather than a hobby.
I think you're right at the core of any creative field people want to be recognized for their talents, but i think it's a different ball game when it comes to putting food on the table.
I believe it's a different dynamic when it comes to E&L's situation because they invested time and money to put their work out there. It's not like they had their ideas jotted down and was waiting to be discovered. They had an Idea, made an investment, and took a risk. That's why I made that statement about them doing it for money.
As a rapper you invest your time, your hobby doesn't prevent you from eating. If your passion required your money to be invested I think your performances would be for more than the experience. Your mentality and the way you market yourself would be cranked up.
I don't think you'll find many creative folks who don't think about making money. That's just the reality of it - if you want to pursue what you love, you need to think about it making money, because that's the only way it's really sustainable long-term. Making some money at your art is what gives you freedom to keep doing it, promoting it, and building on it - otherwise you're looking at the majority if your time and energy being gobbled up by a day job just so you can get by.
That doesn't mean it's anyone's primary focus or motivation, but if you're really into something you're doing and think it has potential, making money has to be on the list.

So I saw the trailer for Into The Storm in front of Edge of Tomorrow (good sci-fi summer popcorn movie, I'd recommend it, it's a shame that fault in our stars movie is dominating it in the box office) and it looks really good IMO! I love the destruction in it, it looks intense. But I will be checking out Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before I check out Into The Storm.
