Shredder is a big mech suit with katana fingers.

Never said SotO wasn't cheesy. And that still doesn't diminish the silliness of what we've seen from the PD movie.

Shell abs and sword fingers. This movie is going to be a great cheese platter of laughter.

So dismiss all sense of logic then?

I know. Got enough of that in the 3x sequels to the original. The worst cheese was the 2k3 series. Peter Laird's writing. Blah.

Agreed with the last part of this....peter laird is way over rated, with his sci-fi and monster agenda's......but I did however love the 2k3 series when they werent in space, or doing dumb side stories like junklantis ect, ect

Mutated humanoid turtles, with a talking pet rat called Splinter. Not cheesy?

In the original comics? Nope. Not cheesy. No one called the original comics 'cheesy'. Calling SOTO that? I can understand, I still enjoy it though.

The 2k3 being cheesy? To each their own. I disagree.

Leo seemingly cutting the Shredder's head off doesn't = Cheese to me.

Donatello in a future with a Mikey who only has 1 arm left, etc. and ending with everyone being killed except Donatello doesn't = cheese to me.

An episode where the Turtles think that April & Casey have been killed doesn't = cheese to me.

Leo's dream/nightmare/hallucination sequence that he stabbed Splinter all the way through with his sword doesn't = cheese to me.

And why is it that, every time you post, you have to throw out a rude, condescending insult to someone? Which is Trolling as well. Ironic, since you call everyone else that...and yet who got banned once already for being a Troll? That would be you.

So how about you knock it off and stop it. Be better than 'us trolls'. Candy Kappa didn't insult you just now, and didn't throw condescending remarks to you.

There is no logic in calling Shredder with super long blades cheesy, yet the very premise of TMNT could be considered cheesy depending on the view point. Candy Kappa in her peculiar, selective ever shifting arguments, and passive-aggressive feminine nature. Totally forgot your form of trolling.

Right, and I suppose what you're doing now shouldn't be considered trolling, huh?

Shredder having so many blades on him does seem pretty ridiculous, imo.

Why is it okay for the turtles to mutate into humanoid shape, with human musculature. But when they develop plastron abs, or humanoid lips to speak. It's outrageous, and cheesy. I'm bringing up the hypocrisy of her arguments.

Because they look ridiculous? Plus I'm pretty sure this isn't everyone's ideal look for a live action Ninja Turtles movie.

Candy Kappa

You clearly don't get it, per usual. I'm not arguing the turtles are cheesy. I'm bringing up Candy Kappa's ever shifting agenda. Why are super long blades on Shredder cheesy, but the mere fact he's called Shredder with normal length blades not cheesy? .

Practicality?

PD Shredder got five blades on his hands/forearms, with the length of short swords. Usually Shredder's wrist blades are more within the dagger length (or shorter), more manageable, and usually only two (thee in Nick toon) blades.

actually (and not saying this to start a fight) it wasn't a muscle suit,

the "muscles" are painted on the suit

nash is a big dude( or was then too) but he isnt ripped

this is the clearest pic i could find of it

I hope the movie isn't cheesy either, I dont want the Turtles to act like the ones from the 90s movie, They should act like the modern day teenagers, Like into video games, and the whole social media thing.

I would imagine April say something like. "How did you guys know about me?" One of the Turtles then replies with. "We followed you on Twitter."

Actually, that would have been pretty cool.. Raph getting claw marks across the cheek, or across his chest/plastron during the fights. If someone who saw the movie told me that stuff like that happened during the film, then I would be intrigued.

But the MPAA would have a field day with stuff like that. Transformers fluid that 'looks like/could be interpreted as blood' is one thing. Blood from a 'flesh & blood' creature (even a CGI Turtle one) would cause too many problems with the ratings board. The MPAA gets on some filmmakers if a 'neck crack is too loud...because it's too intense.'

So nah, no way there would be blood. Again, it's too bad. Would've made the flick at least a bit interesting.

That depends on how you define "cheese". The concept of the turtles alone is cheesy. Even in the first comic book. It's the tone that is serious.

So...what is 'Cheesy'? It's a word I rarely use, because honestly I don't even know what it really/truly means. I hear it used all the time, and I hear it get thrown around all the time. Action films that people say are 'cheesy', I enjoy straight-faced and on its' terms.

So what is 'cheesy'?

The first comic book is one-hundred percent cheese.

But I thought about it before making that post -- the Turtles have roots in pastiche, but you can even work pastiche in without cheese. Saying they have to have cheese is limiting your imagination. They can just as easily work as serious uncanny, or just go straight into the combination of somber and strange that characterize later Mirage.

The thing is those approaches aren't palatable to general audiences.

Candy Kappa
06-06-2014, 04:36 PM
Thr premise of the TMNT is just as cheesy as the usual Superhero comic book, but you still need rules and a set of internal logic. Adam West Batman is cheesy, but still had rules to follow.

TMNT is like the old Greek satires, serious theater plays where everyone is dressed as Satyrs, but everything else is played up straight. This is the very first comic, a Satire play, a straight up vengeance cycle story where the main protagonists are walking talking Shinobi terrapins.

I mean, there is a dark-ish color mood over the teasers, but they are also very popping in color, very comic booky akin to the more recent superhero movies stylization.

Well.. I guess you never know.. the Transformers sequels always had dark looking trailers but always ended up being kinda goofy once I saw the film. I guess that could be the case here. It's always possible.. I just think it will take itself a little more seriously than past films and probably have a little more grit as well. I agree the trailer DEF. has that comic booky color to it. I'm still deciding whether the color pallets look more Spiderman-ish, TDK-ish or Transformers-ish. Not sure yet.. but it definitely has that certain color/tint to it imo.

Edit: Wondering why the hell this TV spot still isn't online yet.. ? I guess a bunch of people saw it multiple times during the NBA finals last night?

How about Battle ravaged Turtles, all superheros in their movies have torn up suits by the end. Spider-Man vs green goblin from Spider-Man 2002 was pretty brutal, so i don't see why we can't have at least a little violence, i'm pretty sure shredder could cut them.

Exactly, if this is PG 13 then the Turtles can definitely have claw marks on their plastrons, Take Spiderman again for example by the end of each movie he has cuts and scrapes and blood wounds (not over the top) Or take TASM for example remember the scene when gwen tends to his wounds? yeah those were pretty deep Clawmarks!, and it was still considered a family movie!, so the turtles can be cut by shredder, just not over the top, I'm pretty sure the turtles can have a even more violent fight with shredder than even the 1990 movie and that's saying something, parents aren't as strict as they were back then, Superhero movies are pretty violent now days.

Slash marks on their shells and plastrons sounds like an okay idea and one that is fairly likely but then it strikes Shredder's blades and the Foot Military's weapons should be made of adamantium or some other such fictional unbreakable substance if their shells are bulletproof and can smash through army vehicles.

It may not be a big deal but since it's likely the turtles that absolutely devestate the Foot Army in the subway station convenienty get overpowered by the same Foot Squad in the sewers I'd like the movie to have some internal logic.

I wouldn't count on any internal logic. The pieces just don't add up at this point, which really leaves people scratching their heads at the decisions. There doesn't seem to be any consistent logic with their decisions outside of the toy angle.

Warboss74
06-09-2014, 10:05 PM
You mean the exact same way the battles in the 1990 movie with the Foot unfold?

How about it's not like the CONTEXT of the battles couldn't be entirely different now could it?

Like the subway station scene the turtles use stealthy tactics to take the Foot out. But when they're attacked in their home in the sewers, the turtles are over whelmed by the numbers and the element of surprise.

Except we see Foot soldiers being thrown around at will. There's nothing stealthy in what we've been shown. There's also nothing to suggest it's a similar situation to the 1990 film.

Warboss74
06-09-2014, 11:00 PM
All we see is the aftermath of Foot Soldiers slamming into a wall. There isn't enough information to come to any other conclusions. We haven't seen enough to suggest anything is "convenient" and the film lacking "internal logic" ... I'm saying, the battles will have a different context of circumstances, obviously.
I've think we've seen more than enough to come to the conclusion that the film will likely be lacking in internal logic. It may not end up that way, but I nust don't see it that happening based on everything we've seen.

How about "Ninja" Michelangelo wearing jingly-jangly seashell necklaces that are going to make all kinds of noise in pretty much any given situation? You know... the antithesis of what a ninja is actually supposed to be, even the whole bloodshed aspect aside?

We won't even get into Donatello's "gear."

We're arguing chains are louder than puka shell necklaces, now? This is the lengths you guys go to because you don't like a design choice. Like Candy Kappa, you bend, and warp logic to fit your taste? Just say you don't like it.

Or, hard shells on a plastron will make noise. Just like a bamboo chest piece.

And I do say I don't like it. Often. And?

They both make some form of noise. I'd argue chains of any size make more sound than hollow shell necklace, with lace. Doesn't matter, Mikey sneaks up on April in the slim amount of footage we've seen. Scares the hell out of her too. So this really is a mute point.

Falling into frame and making a loud thud noise is the new sneaking.

It's not a MOOT point

When he says Mikey's necklace would make all this racket (there's no way it would be that loud) when sneaking up on someone effectively. When there has been countless times the nunchucks themselves have been presented as being chains.

Yeah I just mean't it was pretty inconsitent at times.

Warboss74
06-10-2014, 12:19 AM
Um, examples. We've barely seen much at all in terms of footage.
I'm talking about everything we've seen, and not just the trailers. The size of the turtles seems like it will be inconsistently portrayed when we see Raphael's torso is as large as the cab of the humvee. Donnie can rig up a proton pack and a batcomputer, but duck taping glasses is all the further he can go to solving his eyesight issues. Never mind the impracticality of trying to fight without losing those. Eric Sachs is clearly very wealthy, but the best his wealth can create is a very clumsy and impractical Mecha-Shredder suit. The turtles have to scavenge for everything else, but they can get what looks like a new turtle van with a professional detailing job and custom tires.

All of this and more could be explained well within the confines of the movie's universe, but it would take away far too much time from the narrative. It could also go the route of Need for Speed and establish an internal logic and say screw whenever they want to do a scene a certain way. My money is on number 2.

I'm glad you agree.

He doesn't fall. He jumpes purposefully. She doesn't hear him approaching her either. Lands and frightens her. The sound of a thud when weight is hitting the ground doesn't mean she wasn't stalked.

Raph is rather large in the film. Not all that inconsistent.

Is he supposed to give himself lasik eye surgery? They're just glasses. Scavengers, taping them isn't lacking of logic. Donnie can't just afford to possibly go buy new ones.

And the "batcomputer" is like old tv's strung up together. It's not as fancy as you're making it out to be. All of their utilities, as always is very make shift, and gritty.

As well as his "proton pack" ... god knows what it does, but it's definitely made with an old XBox.

How do we know it's clumsy? Another assumption.

We have yet to see how they get the van. More assumptions. Have you seen the movie?
1. Maybe it's just the way it's shot, but the size doesn't seem to be consistent scene to scene. I have a hard time buying the Raph from the humvee scene fitting in the van let alone the other three, April, and Vernon. On top of the tech stuff in there based on the satelite dish atopthe van.
2. I'm not suggesting him giving himself Lasik, but those would fall off anytime he'd get into a fight. If they never fall off while he fights, it becomes difficult to suspend disbelief. All he'd have to do is create rec specs if they absolutely feel he needs to have glasses.
3. It looked pretty damn clumsy with the retractable blades coming out in the recent tv spot. Nevermind the complete randomness of the different blades used for the retractable claws. The inconsistency in the blade styles makes it incredibly impractical. I'm sure it will be shown as flawless in action, but it's already breaking suspension of disbelief before it ever moves.
4. We don't know how they get the van, but it stands so far apart from everything else they've scavenged that it doesn't fit. Maybe it's a major plot point in the film, but it still doesn't explain why they'd get a professional detail job announcing that they're the turtles. I doubt the movie explains it much at all either.

Something tells me, and this is just a feeling, that Donnie unveils it near the end of the movie and they use it to ride to the destruction in the city for faster travel.

But, on a general situation, it's probably the same as Leo when he sheathes his swords, in comics, cartoons and movies it's all just one fast movement. In real-life you can take your time to holster your weapons given you are alive after the fight to do so.

I would love to see evidence of it.

Seriously, stop that... please! I thought we'd come to the agreement to stop doing this to new users of the forum who speaks positive of the movie! (I'm talking about the image, if you didn't get it)

It was a jab at puddingpop's straw image.

Puddings image was to illustrate a straw-man argument. The plant image is just an insult.

Edit: Let me re-phrase that a bit. The plant image has become an insult on this forum, and it's one of the things one of the mods struck down on. Using now is very unnecessary and just flat out trolling.

So please, God, please
If they make this movie
Don't let them screw Spidey too much

And don't let Toby quit
And open the role up
For Kilmer, and Clooney, and such

Ha no. The straw image means "grasping at straws." It's his favorite meme.

So... redirecting slightly here, but still on the subject of Turtles and cheese - what does everyone feel were the cheesiest moments from the other live-action movies?

I know this is all opinion-based here; what's cheese to one person might be corn to another... (also could we please try not to turn this line of thought into a BayTurtles vs Everything Else attack thread where we all start ripping on previous incarnations to justify our arguments?) :)

I dunno, what's everyone's baseline definition for "cheesy"? To me, cheesy and corny are interchangable, but I don't know if it's that way for everyone else.

Only thing I can think of from the first movie is when Raph is on the barn and yells SPLINTEEEEERRRRRRRR.

Never liked that moment. Everything else I feel is pretty relatively cheese free as far as Turtle media goes.

Oddly enough, that was supposed to be Mikey...but they dubbed Raph over him for some reason. Probably thought it was a more Raph-like thing to do.

I always found the "uh-oh, turtle tantrum!" line from Turtles III to be one of the stand-out cheese moments.

Mind you, when a movie starts with a Turtles dance-off to ZZ Top, you know you're in for a fair bit of cheese anyway.

Ton's of cheese and corn in the early live action movies! Corn in many or the emotional moments and cheese in the constant jokes from the turtles mouths. Totally loved it when I was a kid, tho... And I still love a lot of it, just some cringe now and then. And the first movies were closely related to the Fred Wolf cartoon (not exclusively, tho), so the cheese was highly expected.

Positive that's Mike? Haven't looked close for a comparison, but that surprises me.

Mainly because a lot of the farm scenes were from the comics, like Mike in the barn working out, which also had Raph on the rooftop in the comic (sans yell, though), and Leo in the woods. Though Raph/Don were flipped for the work on the truck too.

It was definitely Mikey, his arc in the film got heavily truncated, that scene ties in with his inability to comprehend life without Splinter...

wow...just from the context of what was left in the film regarding mikey, i can totally see how awesome that coulda been. i knew it was mikey up there, i read about years ago somewhere, dont remember exactly, but yeah, that's mikey dubbed over with raph's voice.

makes sense now.

(also, yeah...the surfer robbie rist voice just woulda killed the vibe for that montage/scene.)

in terms of the original trilogy's cheese (like star wars, heh), theres most of part 2 and...part 3.
