View Full Version : How many of you wear glasses?

So with all this back-and-forth over BayDonnie wearing glasses, and the ensuing discourse as to whether it's a nerd stereotype... I'm wondering - how many of us here wear glasses?
I have to wear glasses for any kind of reading... since I'm usually reading, that means I've nearly always got them on.

I don't, but I always wanted to have glasses. I thought they looked cool.

I'm extremely near sighted, and it's only gotten worse over the past 10 years.
I hated wearing glasses, especially when I was doing Ju-Jitsu. Now I use contact lenses, have since 9th-10th grade. It's been so long since I used glasses the old pair I have don't help me any bit to see anymore.
Lenses gives me so much more freedom then I've ever had with glasses. But i should have had a extra pair of glasses in case I can't afford a new batch of lenses. I use daily lenses, and sometimes I can't afford new ones, so I often wear the same lens pair over several days. In fact, due to student loans I've not been able to buy new lenses last month, the pair I wear now I have had on my eyes for over a week, on Monday I can get a new pair and order new batch as I've gotten my salary by then.

I wear them, and they're very stereotypical geek glasses at that.

I've got an astigmatism so tiny words are not for me :ohwell: In other words, yes I do. I've been wearing glasses for about..the last two months I think and I got them at my mall's LensCrafters. They're OK and at first I was very particular about having them pushed up against my face so that I didn't look around the edges and having them spotless but now I'm a bit more relaxed with them and don't mind as much.

I've worn glasses all my life due to being blind in one eye. If I didn't have them, I wouldn't really be able to see at all.

Hahaha! I know what you mean. I'm super super nearsighted as well and gave up glasses about 5 years ago. I'd worn them since I was 8 and couldn't believe the difference.
-8.50. You know I can't see at all. :-P

Woah, I'm -6 on my right eye and -5,75 on the left. Although testing a new weekly lens I was given -8 on both.
When I was in for check ups for testing if my eyes was legible for contact lenses, my eye doctor did tell me that the skin under my eye lids could get irritated and react on the lenses. But I've been fine. I don't feel a thing even when using the same pair for days, gets a bit dry after the dirt night, but after that it's mostly a breeze. Still feels good to take them off.

I've never had a problem with mine either. I wear Air Optix night and day. I think those are only supposed to go for a month, but I wear them until they just get tooo scratchy...so like 2 months or so.
I take them out at night though. Never been able to sleep in them. I can't understand how some ppeople do that.

Mine are day lenses, so if I want to have them for a longer time I have to sleep with them. Personally it's not so bad falling asleep, it's the waking part, as it feels more comfortable just keeping the eyes shut after sleeping with the lenses on.
Bit of an hassle if I've fallen asleep on the bus.

I've always needed glasses. My eyes are getting weaker and weaker with double vision from an astigmatism. I can't wear contact lenses since my eyes are shaped differently from others. I try not to wear geeky glasses.

I've come to really like how I look in glasses, and thank Pai Doth Noor I do, because there's no chance I'll ever get contacts. I have a really big thing about touching my eyes, no bueno. Can't do it. They're suuuuper sensitive, and I'm a wuss to boot. :trazz:

My eyesight is 'rill bad without aid, but nine days out of ten, I wear contacts instead of glasses. (Usually my wearing glasses is a signal that I didn't go to bed early enough to give the contacts six hours in their cleaning solution.)

I actually had to try it twice. You get used to it, and become more comfortable touching your eyes in general. Eye things still really bother me, but I can now do contacts no problem.

I used to. My vision was about 20/40 when I was 10, so I wore them for a couple years. It was okay, they looked alright - I forget what they're called, but they're the style Harold Ramis wore in "Ghostbusters" - but they were a pain in the ass. To this day, I almost always read until I pass out, and I broke my glasses constantly by falling asleep wearing them. That, and in the summer I'd always get a bad raw spot where the nose piece would slide against the side of my nose when I was sweaty. Eventually they checked my vision again and said that my eyes had gotten a little better, up to 20/30, and that even with the glasses they said the best I'd ever have was 20/25, so I figured that was close enough and just quit wearing them when I was almost 13.
Sometimes as I've gotten older I feel like my eyes are getting blurry now and then, but I can't honestly tell. I'm sure I'll have to wear them again at some point in the future, at least sometimes, since literally everyone in my family has had to. Until then I figure I'm fine.

-9 in my right eye. Can't remember my left. I've been in glasses since I was around 6, I think? And I think I need another exam soon. Family's beginning to make fun of me for not being able to read the TV or clocks when they can. :V
My eyes are also very sensitive to light, so on top of my extreme near-sightedness [some glasses order websites don't even offer my prescription] I can't go outside without sunglasses. Transition lenses just aren't dark enough. When I was in school I had to have a doctor's note stating I needed those for medical reasons. :ohwell:

No offense, Cubed, but that's the stupidest logic I've ever heard. You better be careful because that could affect you in the future if you don't wear them. I have to wear mine, and I don't care how they make me look as long as I can see out of them.
My vision in my right eye with my glasses is 20/24. They never test me without my glasses because they know I can't see the letters without them. And I usually read to the third line with every check up. My next one is this August, so I'll see what they say about my vision then though that's my retinalogist who did my eye surgery. I haven't seen my regular eye doctor in a while, but I figure if something's wrong, Dr. Wilson will tell me. He did say my retinal detachment will never happen again, so that's good news.
And I've been wearing glasses since preschool.

It might not be the smartest logic, but I can relate. One of my best friends is the exact same way. He refuses to wear glasses [but does wear contacts] because he cares more about his appearance than being able to see. Different people have different priorities.
That said, going without vision correction at all is not good for your eyesight.

No, I do not wear glasses but used them for a few years when I was a kid(from 9 to 12, if I recall) due to Aestigmatism(sp?) or as they call it "lazy eye". I only needed them to read/watch tv/play video games/use the computer to avoid irritating my left eye.
I'm lucky, though since most of my family has/had myopia and could/can barely see anything without glasses.

There are so many cute choices for frames out there though... I'd have at least four different pairs if frames over here weren't so expensive. On the other hand, contacts would be fun because you'd be able to change your eye colour if you got the prescription colour kind! I don't think I could ever un-wussy enough to put something on my eyeball though.
For the people who do wear contacts - did you have that problem at first? I'm guessing it's something that you just get used to?

Are kids wearing glasses in school now sociably acceptable?
I remember when I was a kid, all the students would always make fun of the kids wearing glasses calling them, "four-eyes" as well as all the fat kids. Not to mention the stereotype of being a nerd if you wear those point-dexter glasses.
I haven't been a kid in a long time, so I have no idea if its still like that.

My issue with glasses isn't with how they'd make me look, but with how they tend to be uncomfortable for me. I have two pairs, and I have a hard time wearing them indefinitely. I use them mainly for driving. Usually, I find myself taking mine off when I'm stopped at a light, and I put them back on when I see that the light is about to turn green.

In the beginning it was really weird, and putting the contacts on the wrong way would hurt. But now it's all an easy and problem free procedure. I was also in the beginning very fixated on washing my hands as clean as I could, lots of soap, clean the nails ect. Now I just give them a quick wash.

I'm really not sure what the view on it is with today's kids... I remember that it was definitely looked-down-on when I was a kid. Now that I'm an adult, I know more people who wear glasses than people who don't, so I guess I hadn't really thought about glasses being geeky in quite a while!

I can't speak for most people, but I absolutely could not learn how to put contacts in. And my mother trains people to wear them for a living; I am literally the only person she hasn't been able to get in contacts. I'm going to assume that most people do get the hang of it, I'm just overly sensitive to things near my eye. sensitive and I hate it lmao PUTTING ON EYE MAKEUP FOR COSTUMES IS MY WORST NIGHTMARE and doctors have had to hold me down to put drops in my eyes]

I was never made fun of for wearing glasses as a kid, and mine were just about as nerdy as they came. Big round frames, thick lenses. Nobody I knew that wore them really got made fun of either.

I've never had a problem touching my eyes, so putting contacts in was never a problem. But that putting them in backwards thing is a pain. I have to look them over before I pop them in to make sure they didn't flip over when I took them out the night before. You know immediately if they are in wrong though!
My other main problem is lint on my fingers that sticks to the lens. I was my hands, don't dry, and invariably I'll have something get on a lens. Just take it out and start over.
I love my contacts though. Some people complain about them drying out or whatever, but I never have much of a problem (except during spring allergies, but my eyes woud itch no matter what then)

I'm another one with stereotypical nerd specs - thick, black rims. Been wearing them for almost 20 years now. Used to get the piss ripped out of me something rotten at school, fast forward a decade and everyone's wearing 'em - go figure!
It was even worse when I was playing basketball - after breaking 3 pairs of glasses in a single season, my parents finally bought me some Horace Grant-style sports goggles. I looked ridiculous - old-school kicks, knee-high socks, short shorts (during the height of MJ & Fab Five mania, when baggy shorts were a must), topped off with my goggles - but I soon shut up the haters when we started playing...

So, yes. It takes a little while to find your technique and get comfortable with it. But it will happen. Now I put them in and out, adjust them, etc., without even thinking about it. You'll start out doing it in front of a mirror and eventually not even need that.

I've been as nocturnal as I could be since I was in middle school. it helped that I grew up in Las Vegas, and going outside during the daytime was murder due to the heat. So I just learned to live at night to the best of my ability. It's one of many reasons why I'm unemployed right now, though, since I've moved to a small town where there just aren't any night time jobs.

I had to start wearing glasses primarily for reading blackboards as a senior in high school and didn't have to wear them all the time until halfway through college. I wore John Lennon glasses for 10 years until the frames deteriorated so much the eye place refused to make lenses for them & wear either thick rimmed nerdy/hipster glasses or this pair that has no rim on the bottom but are thin, purple cat eye shaped glasses.
I trained myself to wear contacts last fall for my wedding/honeymoon, but despite wearing them off and on for months (it took me 3 weeks to get over problems putting them in), getting them out is a huge, time - consuming ordeal and causes me anxiety. Logically, I know I will eventually get them out, but it really irritates my eyes and I'm always afraid they'll get stuck in there or go up behind/into my eyelid and stick. So, while I'd prefer to wear them, I usually don't.
I think my issue with Donnie and the glasses is that it isn't just nerds who wear glasses. (Seems like almost everyone I know is in glasses or contacts now that we're in our thirties or late twenties, and most of the people I know aren't nerds.) If he's near sighted, odds are one or more of his brothers would be, too. I also can't imagine seriously doing a lot of sports/strenuous physical activity with them. I mean, because glasses are a huge annoyance for me in those situations.

I've worn glasses full-time since I was five. I've never had an interest in wearing contacts, so I've never tried.
For karate I have prescription goggles that I wear for sparring. I have a dedicated cheap pair that I wear for the rest of the class, which usually doesn't involve getting hit in the face, but sometimes it happens (just yesterday I got kicked in the face by an upper belt during an exercise that was supposed to be practicing control...).

I didn't use them until I absolutely had to. I felt so ashamed when I was younger. I couldn't even see the blackboard but there was no way I was putting on glasses. I think differently now though. I wear glasses most of the time as my eyes are too sensitive for contact lenses.

Yup, since I was 10. Need them all day long unless I'm doing really close up stuff like drawing or reading small text. I do wear contacts sometimes, they're the ones which you can sleep in. They're advertised as monthly disposables but I was advised to give my eyes a break every week or so, even if just overnight. I have to have special flatter lenses because I have large eyeballs apparently. Not wearing them at present because of my hayfever. I was a little freaked out about the idea of putting something in my eye at first but it's something I got used to very quickly. For anyone thinking about contact lenses I would recommend trying a few different types and brands as it makes a huge difference. Took me years to find ones I can wear comfortably.
I did get teased at school for wearing glasses and consequently I would walk about without them despite the fact I could hardly see, which had a knock-on effect on my confidence. It doesn't bother me at all now, except when it's sunny and I can't wear sunglasses, that's a bit irritating.
Regards Donnie, I'm fine with his glasses. I hope we also get to see what he looks like without them too.

It never bothered me. What DID bother me were the particular frames, as they looked like they came straight out of the 80's or earlier, as opposed to looking more modern. Like okay, I'm not opposed to Donatello sporting big, thick coke-bottle lenses, but at least make them look pleasant. If the frames HAVE to have rims [and when they're being placed over a purple mask, rimless is really the only way to go] make them black. The particular frames BayDonnie has look hideous, but they'd look hideous on anybody.
Nah, my problem lies in him having goggles, too. One or the other, take your pick, but don't go with both.

Geez, now I don't feel so bad about being so darn "blind". I'm SEVERELY nearsighted (-8.5 in one -9 in the other) and I've worn glasses since I was in third grade. I used contacts for a few years in middle and high school, but eventually the cost of replacement and the difficulty of keeping them clean got to be more than I was willing to mess with. Plus, my eyes are so bad that it's hard to get contacts in my prescription anyway. But it's nice to know I'm far from being the only one here who needs specs.
As for Donnie wearing them- I don't see why it should be an issue. I like the idea of him having poor eyesight. Maybe it's because he spends so much time staring at screens? Or maybe he was just naturally nearsighted when he mutated? It's just really different- and kind of neat, IMHO. :tcool:

My vision used to be -8 in one eye and -8.5 in the other eye but I still wore contacts. Now, they are -6.5 in both eyes. I do not know if it is due to better technology or something that I have been doing. `
As for Donnie having glasses, it did not bother me and it was certainly different. :tcool:

I do. Not really crazy about it but oh well. I can do contacts too and still I miss my 'trial pair' because it sucks not seeing a damn thing clearly while wearing costume makeup or whenever I cosplay -due to not wearing my glasses- but I manage without getting hurt so that's definitely a plus.

I wear glasses occasionally. I'm near sighted about a -1.25 on my right eye and -2.50 on my left. I only use them when I drive or in class though.

My mom works in an Optometrist office and she sat me down in the chair a few days ago to see if I needed another exam. I don't, but when I took off my glasses for ***** and giggles, I couldn't even see the big E.

When I do the exam, I can read up to the third line with my glasses on, but this last time, I missed a few letters, and that never happens, though sometimes they would give me a little contraption with pinholes in them, and I'd look through one and read it. That usually helped, but I did it without that this time. Still, I'm good to go, so that's fine with me.

I think I need a monocle because my left eye is perfect, but, my right eye's vision is going bad. That, or it's a tumor (in my head, I have Arnold Schwarzenegger's voice screaming, "IT'S NOT A TUMOR"...also, holy crap, I spelled Schwarzenegger correctly)

No glasses. I had to wear glasses as a child and it was not very nice. In my youth I got rid of them !

Panda, a monocle would be awesome - you could just ham it up and pretend to be a villain all the time!
Well, that, or the Monopoly guy.

Mom joked around to me that if I had to wear contacts, I would technically only need one and not two. I told her, "Yeah, I might as well just wear a monocle."

My step-mother still laughs at me because the only letter that I could read (that helped determine that I needed glasses) was that letter E.
