View Full Version : Now You Face ... Marketing

Looks like June, 3 months out is when they decided to kick it in gear. We're going to see new trailers. We're getting individual character posters now. Toys are about to hit retailers. Crush Soda is running flavor specific runs for each turtle. Raph = Strawberry, Mikey = Orange, Donnie = Grape, and Leo = Berry. Pizza Hut marketing will soon be coming. More stuff coming to light.
THIS Shredder, totally over the top, just like the character was meant to be. But he looks totally bad ass.

Nice black and white theme as a nod to the possible original Mirage source material? I dig it.

It can be spelled both ways. I have no idea what's going on with Mikey's face... they sure could have picked a better pic of him, the other guys look good while he looks slightly retarded...

I'm actually warming up a bit to the Shredder suit... It's still too bulky here and there and there's too many pointy bits, but the samurai-influence makes it a bit more likable.

Great thread, we need some place to talk about all the stuff released without discussing in the image thread. Plus, this is a great place to talk about new trailers and TV spots, since the trailer discussion thread is also closed down.
Now let's hope this thread survives.

This is about marketing. And the perception that it's been lacking, when it hadn't even started yet.
The fact that it hadn't started is why it was lacking. This is a summer blockbuster. Marketing for these films typically start prior to 60 days from release.

That's the point. It is out in 60 days and the marketing you mentioned (X-Games, Crush) just started. It should've started sooner.
I'm not even going to comment on their method of marketing. Any other movies using the X-Games as promotion?

Destroys the myth of no marketing.
By starting marketing just 2 months before the movie. Which could be a bit too late.

Please know that I'm not trying to start an argument, but I do not understand the context in which people believe that TMNT is late is late to the marketing game.
The only reason I wish they would pick up the pace is because I love the turtles, and would love to see as much as possible.
But does anyone here actually work in film marketing professionally? Someone who can say for sure they are lagging behind?
A bunch of films are coming out in August, ie Guardians of the Galaxy, and I don't see them anywhere, sure they have more substantial trailers, and figures, just like the Turtles...but has anyone seen much more than that? Nope. Take a look at comicbookmovie.com, and the majority of the posters being released for Guardians are fan made awesomeness that even the director, James Gunn admits to wishing he could use.
My point? Can a working professional confirm if they are lagging behind, OR is this truly just the opinion of fans on a forum?

All the way back to 2013.
You should see Godzilla's marketing too.
Yes, typically these types of movies market in small ways a year or so out from release(teaser posters, film stills, etc), and then pick up big 7-8 months from release with a teaser and/or official theatrical posters. Then after that we get the first full theatrical trailer which is usually around the 2-2.5 minute mark. After that you get more posters, more film stills, tv spots up until release.
This movie started official marketing 5 months before release with a teaser trailer.
Everything before that was leaked unofficially.
So yes, the marketing for this movie prior to the teaser release was non-existant.
Big summer blockbuster films of this type more often than not start marketing further out than 5 months from film release.
Not a professional marketer, but I have been following these types of movies as a hobby for 10 years.

No regardless of what any one on these board no it's not I have heard from multiple source this is normal some movies choose, key word choose to have a larger marketing but the average it more similar to what we are getting, just like at paramount and all there movies from the past year maybe two all shorter marketing people like to assume because other movie do it everyone does but its not the case

I think part of the problem was that the stuff that was unofficially leaked kind of gave a worst-foot-forward vibe (purely IMO). I don't think that the first glimpse of the Turtles we should've been seeing was that awful Halloween Mikey costume - seeing that put me in a funk about everything to do with this movie for days! I know you can't always control leaks, but it was a very unpleasant shock.
On the other hand, it can only get better from here.

I hated that Halloween costume lol.. But I wasn't flipping out like a lot of people. Halloween costumes are never an accurate portrayal of actual CGI in the film. Or even what the end result will be. I'm glad that those kick ass Marquettes were leaked directly afterwards along with the pic of Shredder. Plenty of positive feedback after those were released. Unlike when the costume.

Those marquettes where the only thing that saved me from dropping a huge pile on this movie, however, my next question was Where do I get these wonderful toys? I think they really screwed the pooch with the lack of advertising. It's probably going to hurt the movie but what can you do?

I actually don't see any difference with any other movie coming out this year. I think what Graphic Content said plays a huge role in it. A lot of us are practically foaming at the mouth for new promo so it seems like we aren't getting enough bc we always want more. My only issue is the fact that we haven't had a full theatrical trailer...yet. But I think we will before release. But with any other film the marketing only really kicks up about two mouths out.. some even a month out. Whether it be GOTG or Transformers or DOTPOTA.. TMNT is pretty on par with other films when it comes to marketing. I also think that things are about to kick up in the next month. I would love to have those Marquettes as well.. but I think they belong to Platinum Dunes and I'd be surprised if they mass produced them for sale. Bummer

ha! that shredder one is so over the top! with the caliber of quality behind this movie, i'd expect no less. from the very first image we received of the shredder, i've thought they were going with a kinda "extreme" mortal kombat style for the character designs and this goes right along with that.
and that raph graffiti style one is def awesome!
as per marketing...ive just now started seeing promotional stuff pop up at stores for how to train your dragon 2 and aside from the posters i still havent really seen anything for xmen literally til yesterday when i went to carls jr and saw they had kid's meal toys (all of which i scooped, heh.)
iirc, i never really saw anything for cap or spidey 2 til about a month or six weeks before they came out. at least in terms of any periphery stuff. they had about the same as tmnt regarding posters n trailers/tv spots. id say we're in pretty standard shape regarding marketing.

Transformers did too. Gotg didn't, but they started releasing official images in December (Link (http://comicbook.com/blog/2013/12/31/guardians-of-the-galaxy-official-synopsis-image-released/)) and the first teaser came out in mid February. I know theyve been hitting the NBA Finals with TV spots pretty hard.. and you're tapping into a demographic there that may not pick up comic books or tune into the Nick cartoon. I think the marketing is doing well at this point. I've seen several of my friends on FB (that are avid sports nuts tuning into the Finals) go and take a sec and update their status saying something like "whaat?! a new ninja turtles?! im there opening day" .. another status on FB said "transformers? Interesting he isn't wearing the glasses in that artwork. I'm realllllllly hoping they only make a brief appearance in the movie before Donnie ditches them - though I'm not holding my breath since there has been plenty of other media/promo shots with him indeed wearing them.

HIS Shredder, totally over the top, just like the character was meant to be. But he looks totally bad ass.
Considering that in the initial design process for the character they tried a different look but the mutual agreement of everyone that it worked best as a more simple realistic look then I'd sat that "over the top" is certainly NOT how the character was meant to be.
Also this Shredder looks ridiculous. When he draws his extra blades it looks like his hands are peacocking.

Nah.
Shredder the concept, the costume, has always been over the top. That's the point. The turtles always make jokes about it too. It's intenionally both over the top, funny, and intimidating.
This just ramps up the idea even more. It's not un heard of because he's embossed in an entire metal, eyes glowing suit in the 2k3 show. Where gradually his suit gets more and more over the top. In the Nick toon he has blades that extend, or retract to ridiculous lengths.
"Maybe all that hardware's for making coleslaw"
DAMN man seriously... I WANT THOSE F-ING POSTERS!!! Esp. The Shredder one. I agree they are by far the best posters we've ever gotten for a TMNT movie. I've gotta buy them.
Edit: I much rather have an evil powerful man Literally controlling the entire of city " even lives in a Castle"
than some Japanese guy in a warehouse hanging out with a bunch of cigar smoking, TV snatching teenagers.
This Character seems way more focused, more intelligent, more malicious, more conniving, more menacing, more dangerous, more powerful and more controlling. It's going to be the bomb watching it play out.

Also as for the Donnie spelling, it has definitely always been both. I've usually seen "Donnie" in the comics, except for Image. Including the canonical ones (Vol. 4 by Peter Laird).

Oh c'mon now. I know we've gotten into a mode of viewing everything with a positive or negative eye depending on what side we're on but putting aside everything including the designs of the characters themselves I don't think these can be viewed as "good".
I'm not the biggest fan of the Imagi movie but surely the posters including the individual ones worked much better at selling the look and tone of the movie as well as being much better images than any of these.
These are just crude line drawings and the turtles poses seem to be conveniently designs to obscure their abundance of accessories as well as show them with more standard faces. You don't really get anything from this.
Also let's not go down the route of saying this is Mirage Comics inspired. Putting aside the wrong colors, the lack of toning that the Mirage books were known for and not looking at all like anything from any of the comics do we really think anyone involved gives enough of a **** about the original comics to give a nod in this way.

I like the idea of the street art posters, but I really wish the spray paint textures had been handled a little better. It looks like the artist used some sort of basic smearing/blurring to give a stencil look instead of digging into more accurate textures for the medium. More splatters, too. They're way better than floating head posters, though.

For marketing, I prefer simplicity. See Batman '89 style marketing.
You mean the very sleek oval Batman symbol? I agree that was very cool but imagine if the posters and billboards and the like was that same Bat symbol drawn with a sharpie. Wouldn't look as good, would it?
Also that movie initially had a lot of the same stigma that this movie had but he released a neat trailer early on that put fans fears very comfortably to rest. This has not.

i definitely agree that they seem to be trying to kinda obscure how weird the new designs look. but i also think they've chosen to do it in a way that (and your mileage may vary on whether its good or bad) is consistent with the type of imagery that has been coming out so far.
the ampersand pic, the color swatch pic and now a kind of graffiti/art/banksy wanna be style series of posters. seems like they're going a little more abstract as opposed to outright action, in your face imagery.
philosophically, if they're banking on a lot of people coming to see this sheerly outta nostalgia, then i think this is genius. it NOT being outright pics and examples of EXACTLY what we'll see in the flick may work better at attracting the general masses because they wont see the new stuff and automatically hate it, like so many tend to do. after transformers, im sure the producers kind of expect that to happen from the hard cores to the casuals. people seem to not like change AT ALL.
honestly, i've gotten used to the new designs. i still think shredder is way too busy, but so crazy it works, and based on the action figure, splinter looks awkward with his hair bun and i really think mikey's face is ridiculous, but the other turtles look fine.

Nolan's Batman films were considerably different from Burton's and that was a very successful, billion dollar franchise.
Helps that it was more faithful to a specific Batman ideal, but that only matters to us nerds. They were ALSO good, exciting movies that were very entertaining.

Shredder at the start of the series is decked out in entirely metal armor. Before he just had a pink outfit and bladed shoulders, wrists, shin guards, and mask. He's turned into a full on cyborg in the series.
It progressively gets more, and more ridiculous as the series progresses. Stuff far more exaggerated than what we're getting.

i can see why it bothers some people just from a design standpoint, because (and i've said this before) this new movie shredder looks like a mortal kombat character...all extreme and like hes ready to do a fatality.
again, ive said this before as well, it looks so crazy thats it gotta be interesting at the very least. now that im looking at it, it does have a very busy, super detailed, over designed bayformers look. kinda like megatron.
as for the whole "evolution of the shredder" from 2k3...its still the character, or an echo of what that character represents to the tmnt. for all intents and purposes, regardless of whether its a robot or clone or alt reality version...those are all THE SHREDDER.

absolutely nothing, Shredder is one of my Top 5 super villains
but i don't need giant blades and a mech suit to feel intimidated by him, that is something that over the years has kept shredder so high on my list
he is meant to be an ultimate ninja master..with no equal since the death/disappearance of yoshi
this 2014 shredder is a prime example of show not tell...he is big and sharp so of course he is dangerous
the turtles have always struggled with the shredder, he didnt need to become megatron to be unbeatable
in the first movie he pretty much destroys them nd even admits that they could've taken him had they fought together and only lost one brother in the battle
watch that fight again and tell me is that the fighting of a man who cant win or a guy toying with his prey...he is constantly taunting them only to be stopped by a lucky shot from leo
and he gets defeated because he looses focus ala splinter

Because Shredder needs to look ridiculously over the top to seem unbeatable.
Maybe he could have done that through his ACTIONS and demonstration of ninja skill and ruthlessness instead of 6 machetes on each mecha robot suit arm.
and that villain didn't even have 5 minutes of screen time before killing himself
So because past iterations of Shredder were less desirable to flat out bad it's okay that this movie's is too?

Well how can you say it's just "show" without the tell when you haven't seen the film.. what about context.. buildup.. it's hard to "tell" when you haven't seen the movie. I know everyone hates it when you say that but it's true.
He isn't "megatron "... He's Shredder.. just not the exact Shredder we remember.. and that's fine imo. I like the fact that he seems unbeatable.. I makes it interesting.. I don't care that he's bladed from head to toe.. He's called the Shredder for a reason and that reason is apparent now.. Yea it's over the top.. but that's how I like it.. It's a taste thing. So you're not "wrong" for disliking it. but it's not outright "wrong" for the Character.
Edit: Ill judge better when I watch him enter the lair and approach Splinter.. but I think the fact that his suit is soo over the top could very well make him more intimidating.. I mean.. if I woke up and saw that in my room... id piss all over myself.

What's so blasphemous about that? The unique style, the theme, the deliberate street feel to it with the spray paint. Mirage black and white color scheme.
I didn't say it was blasphemous or even bad art in itself and as Zodiac Brave said it's probably a good thing this art obscures the new designs but the idea of these being hailed as the best TMNT posters ever I think has more to do with the supporters of this movie hyping everything to do with it as the best thing ever than a objective view.
It trumps everything I've ever seen for Ninja Turtle films. The original teaser / theatrical poster got me amped as a child. It's the 2nd best. But these crap on everything else.
The posters for the first two TMNT movies still get referenced in media all the time, do you really really expect these posters will years from now?
Again the Imagi movie wasn't the best but comparing the individual turtle posters to these ones I'd strongly argue the 2007 movie takes it.
The simpler approach is still comical, and very much over the top. The entire concept of the ninja turtles in it's original conception is commentary, and poking fun at comic book tropes. "Splinter" ... "Shredder"
Well it's more of a nod to a specific comic book story and yes, it's still somewhat over-the-top in the sense that any comic book costume is over-the-top but relatively speaking the Shredder's outfit in the Mirage books is quite understated
They make light of the fact he is decked out in unnecessary razor blades. It's over the top version of samurai armor. Did you complain this much about the 2k3, and Nick Shredder designs? Which in many cases are even more over the top compared to this.
Actually I cast my mind back to see if I could remember how many versions the turtles have actually made light of the Shredder and I can only think of two examples.
I was mainly talking about the original intent of the comic design but since people have made an issue of it I thought the original 2k3 design was a good upgrade. It was pretty sleek looking armor in the early seasons. True given the twist to the Shredder's origin he later sported more sci fi designs but bare in mind that twist wasn't that well received with every fan and it wasn't long before he was sporting his standard armor.
The 2012 version has one retractable blade per arm that I don't think is too long. If he sprung SIX retractable blades per arm that were all as long as his actual arm like the Platinum Dunes version I'd think differently.
My buddy already did.. look above smart guy. I understand that you guys continue to shift.. constantly. I understand that your engaging in the same slander campaign and no matter what they put out it's gonna be the same " Nope.. I don't like it... Nope I don't like it.. Nope I don't like it..
Which is fine.. to each their own.. I just don't have the energy anymore.
You keep criticizing my writing style rather than counter any points I make which makes me wonder if it's because you actually can't counter them.
I'm not shifting any of my views. Again there's a difference between a simple symbol presented in a professional looking style and something which looks like graffiti. One is simple, the other is crude...or rather supposed to look crude. I get that it's intentional but I don't agree it's the best way to sell the movie.
Also why do you say I am conducting a smear campaign? What possible incentive could I have to do that. It seems paranoid, isn't it more likely that I just flat out don't like a lot of stuff to do with this movie and aren't shy on voicing my opinion?

in the first movie he pretty much destroys them nd even admits that they could've taken him had they fought together and only lost one brother in the battle
watch that fight again and tell me is that the fighting of a man who cant win or a guy toying with his prey...he is constantly taunting them only to be stopped by a lucky shot from leo
and he gets defeated because he looses focus ala splinter
awesome for that movie.
good for that shredder.
that movie already already exists, though...

The look of Shredder in the new TMNT movie is one of the few things I sympathize with all sides on. He does look pretty silly and extreme in the couple seconds of the teaser we've seen. On the other hand this is a live action movie and we haven't had a chance to see Shredder in real action. Super Shredder was barely able to move in Secret of the Ooze, but this is 2014 and we've come a long way in special effects. We may find that this version of Shredder looks bad-A in action.

Yes. And we could have had a Shredder that looked like this

Or even remotely similar to this and, with today's effects and choreography, still could have looked totally badass and NOT be in a ridiculous bladed from head to toe mech suit.

A slim, ninja-like Turtle that's around 5'-5'3" at their tallest fighting THAT Shredder on the big screen, flipping around in great effects and choreography would be a dream come true.
And the fact that he's wearing so little armor speaks VOLUMES on his confidence in his skills.

That would make sense if Shredder in this film turns out to be similar to the Shredder in the IDW continuity. My only point is that before we argue we should keep an open mind until we know more. We don't know where the story is going to go in this film. For all we know it could be Shredder's spirit driving a mech suit (this is why I'm not the writer :)) and how silly would that look to have Spirit Shredder driving an IDW looking Shredder.

The Nick series is basically an "Ultimate" version of the Fred Wolf series. Which is fine. It's not my favorite version of the Turtles, but it's fairly entertaining. If that's what this movie was trying to be I'd be much more optimistic than I am about we've seen and know about this version.

It's your opinion, and that's fine. But that doesn't make any sense to me. What repetitiveness?
The first movie and second movie are different from each other, and different from the comics & cartoon. It became its' own thing/hybrid.
The 2003 cartoon is different from the 80's cartoon, the comic books, and the movies. It became its' own thing.
The Image comics were even different from the other comics. Became its' own thing.
The 2007 CGI film had different stuff (Raph as Nightwatcher, etc.)
Even people in favor & defending the film keep talking about how each version/cartoon series/etc. did different stuff and were different from each other. Which is their reasoning for defending stuff which has been changed. And yet at the same time the franchise has been 'too repetitive'?
Repetitiveness has nothing to do with it. It's simple.
You either like changes that get made, or you don't like changes that get made. And Some people just think that the changes made for this new one suck. Not because it's New. Not because it's different.
But they simply go 'The Turtles look like crap' or the countless reasons that people gave a 100 times.
'still attaining the original essence of the story.' Wouldn't that be the 4 brothers chatting/talking/caring/responding to each other as a family? Isn't that the true essence of the story? If so, the marketing hasn't shown any hints of that kind of dialogue/rapport/bonding/etc. so far...

On a side note... seeing this cracked me up.
So... marketing. Trailers. I'm not getting my hopes up for anything this week but surely we'll have to get a proper trailer within the next fortnight. I can't imagine them leaving it any longer than that.
Well, actually I can, but at that point we'd be right down to the wire so it's reasonable to expect a full-length trailer by that point.

Yepp. and the gentleman in question actually admitted that he'd be seeing it in theatres
yes you are very right i have said i will see it theaters many times..so i dont see how thats an issue
but yet still picked other just to spite the "other side" bc he didn't want to add to the increasing majority. So we now know how you operate in a "losing situation".. People actually ADMIT to sticking around JUST BC someone told them "to leave". That was my point. Sorry if you didn't catch it Boston.
actually no, as i stated when you asked even though the thread in question said i didn't have to explain
there is a good 95% chance i will not see it opening weekend, again the weekend is very busy for me..i also admitted that even though i may see it in theaters there may be a chance i will not be paying for it for a very number of reasons, all listed in the very thread
why that irks you i have no idea..im not denying watching it, im not saying i wont see it why does it matter at all how i choose to see it?
i bet if i was for this movie my answers wouldnt matter to you...because even still fact of the matter is i just can not see it opening weekend unless something changes
there is no spite there is no "grr this is my plan to make it fail mhwahahaha"
i'm just busy..i can give you a copy of my internrary if you really want to see it

Both the TMNT and Transformers 4 are being distributed by Paramount. Perhaps they've been shy on promoting TMNT for fear of cannibalizing the target audience. Summer blockbusters are a blood bath of major AAA releases. I've assumed they wait on spending their millions until ... Well now.

Guess? I figured that out when it takes 30secs in the trailer to even see a glimpse of any Turtle. The CGI on the Turtles is too expensive so they'll be use sparingly, which means are focus is the humans. This could work but the crew behind this project aren't known for their deep and thought provoking writing. So the the TMNT will be events for the humans (even Erich Sachs) to play off of. I rather they have use animatronics or costumes and CGI around that instead making the entire project less cost effective.

Yeah Casey is just towering over them.. Try again.
Kind of been covered, but... he actually is. He's roughly on the same plane as Leo and Raph, who are very short compared to him. Donnie is standing far closer to the "camera" than they are, but he's not actually bigger - it's just a visual trick.
I think a lot of the original, lasting appeal of the Turtles actually comes from those original designs - they're short, kind of cute and unassuming... but totally deadly. There's a bit of a visual joke in that (which was the original point), and also a bit of a "don't judge a book by its cover" message inherent to it that I've always liked. The mere concept of a ninja turtle was intended to be ridiculous, and it works best when they're not "overcompensating"... Making them massively tall and muscular loses that.
I mean, it's a subjective thing. There's no "wrong" per se, just personal opinions. But it's worth noting that the Turtles have pretty much always been short:
http://s23.postimg.org/tmwl30nm3/tmnt_height.jpg
I think there's a good reason for that, and a reason it's largely been unchanged for 30 years. Some may not agree, but I think it's a worthwhile point/argument regardless.

Thank god Bay didn't direct Godzilla... Holly ****. When it's another director, it's called build up. When it's Bay.. it's those pesky humans. EVEN if he's got nothing to do with the story. Not pointing the finger at you personally but I see this a lot on the internet now.. I wonder if people realize how trendy and weird it looks when they complain about "the humanz". Ill never understand how some can give a film like Godzilla " with a messy TERRIBLE story and plot that had NO flow to it, weak characters, the only strong character dies a quarter way into the film, and a title character that literally takes a back seat to a couple of giant praying mantises and only has about 20 minutes of screen time in a roughly two hour long movie". THANK GOD classics like Jaws and Jurassic park aren't directed by Michael Bay and being released this year. With this internet trend phrase " why all the humans" so prevalent these last couple of years after a billion dollar rebooted Transformer franchise directed by a man that everyone LOVES to rag on I think these classic films would seriously be torn to shreds if they had Bays name on them.. and that's saying something about todays "critic" imo.
This could work but the crew behind this project aren't known for their deep and thought provoking writing
Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol was pretty thought provoking... more so than any TMNT film.. How thought provoking do you really want it? TMNT should be a fun entertaining action film.. showcasing a relationship between 4 brothers and their father. It's a film about Family, responsibility and character. the writers know this. They also know that a large portion of the audience will be children as well.. so they don't want all the kiddies scratching their noggins trying to figure everything out. Ya know? With a film like TMNT.. you want it to be enjoyable for everyone.. making it to heady imo would take some of that away. It's going to be a tough line to walk but again I think they'll do fine IMO.
Andre Nemec: " I did have the old Eastman and Laird black and whites in the office. I knew very well the cartoons and the movies. I didn’t have the bed sheets. I didn’t have the lunch pails. I had a neighbor who had the Turtle Van. That was as close as I got, but I was a fan enough to know the differences between the original comics, the cartoon and the various iterations of the movies. … You know, the canon of the turtles, in all their iterations, always seems to harken back to a being a story about family, a story of friendship and a story about brothers. I think that, ultimately, when you look at all the different stories, whether it’s the Laird comic or the cartoon now or the cartoon from the late ’80s, or the movies where they’re in the suits, it really always boils back down to being a story about brothers. That really was the most driving principle for us, making sure that that element was always a central component of the movie.
They’ve all been pretty consistent over the years. Amazingly, they’re all pretty well represented by the weapons they use. Michelangelo has always been the freewheeling nun-chucks guy. Donatello has the bo staff, which is a simple but complicated weapon. He’s the tech guy. Leonardo has the swords of a leader and Raphael carries these big, brutish sais, which are really about doing the maximum destruction in the shortest amount of time. They have always, in the canon, lived by those principles. They’re four individuals who are individuals all alone, but, combined, really make one person, which makes them really interesting to watch. They sort of make their decisions, not to get too heady about it, but when those brothers are interacting, it’s almost like watching one person come to terms with the direction they’re going to move in, whether it’s left or right. … I think that the April you’re going to see is largely the April you know. … I can tell you that Splinter is in the movie. You will get to enjoy Master Splinter. He’s an important component in the dynamic of the Turtles themselves. It’s still very much a story of teenagers and that really is the sort of land that the Turtles — in all the versions of the story — find themselves in trapped in. The land of teenager problems. For us, that was a fun world to get in and play with. Without Master Splinter, it’s “Lord of the Flies.” Yeah, he’s in there. "
I think they know what they're doing. How well they do it or if they'll even "pull it off" only time will tell.

Never ceases to amaze me to see the director of Bad Boys 2 get compared in any way to Steven Spielberg.
If you had at all watched Jurassic Park, JAWS, or Godzilla(which I'm pretty sure you haven't based on your notions about them) you'd understand that those movies AREN'T about the dinosaurs, the shark, or Godzilla.
They're about the people reacting TO THEM. The humans are the main characters, not the monsters.
However, in media such as Transformers and TMNT, where the human characters almost ALWAYS DO take a back seat to the main non-human characters, it would be unusual and terrible for the opposite to happen.
Like, say, in the Transformers movies. Where we get Shia LaBeef and Megan Fox and Shia's crazy wacky movie parents and the BadAss Army Guys™ and John Turturro baring his ass cheeks or getting pissed on by a robot. And, more recently, Marky Mark as farmer inventor just trying to make ends meet and put his kid through college.

What do you think the reason is though? Or do you think they started out short so every other artist drew them that way, too?
The reason I like them being short, don't know if it was intentional, is because it makes them a bit of an underdog. It also stresses the fact that, despite being vertically challenged, they're still able to use martial arts to their advantage without having to rely on their size and strength alone. The new turtles might be big, but as long as the enemies they are facing are equally as tough, I might not have a problem with that.

They're about the people reacting TO THEM
The only Franchise in question that this COULD make sense is Transformers.. Maybe a film on Cybertron.. but how relatable would that be? Do you think that would do as well?
Not so sure, mostly just the die hard geeks of the franchise would enjoy it imo. But all the rest.. the TMNT, Jaws, Godzilla, Jurassic Park.. these are all films about things we don't see everyday and showcase the "humanz" "reacting to these things".
If you had at all watched Jurassic Park, JAWS, or Godzilla(which I'm pretty sure you haven't based on your notions about them) you'd understand that those movies AREN'T about the dinosaurs, the shark, or Godzilla.
Omg .... Nope.. Godzilla isn't about... Godzilla. Jaws isn't about a giant friggin shark. And Jurassic park isn't about dinosaurs. They're not the main attractions.. And you're arrogantly telling ME that you think I haven't seen these movies? Ice those arms so they don't ache tomorrow  I care about my buddy after all we've been through.
These movies whether it be giant robots.. Dinosaurs.. a giant Lizard or a giant Shark are all films with people "reacting to them" This is why we see these films.. bc these are things we don't see every day Trickingtreater. There are humans in them " I cant believe I just said that btw" to help us all relate and gain a sense of "reality" while at the same time escaping our own reality. The first TMNT film? Did ANYONE get upset about the "humanz" in that film? All that screen time for April, Charles, Danny and Casey? Are you claiming that the first films didn't have a plot focused around the "humanz"? 1, 2 and omg 3? Come on Tricks.
Anyway.. My point is the utter stupidity and hypocrisy of film critics today.
People literally only make a stink when it's a Bay film while giving everyone else a free pass. It's ok for all of these films to have mostly "humanz" on the screen for the majority of the time but not when you have mutated turtles that were born on planet earth and live among human beings?

Its going terrible.
They should take a look at the numbers that Edge of Tomorrow is doing at the box office and we were bombarded with trailers from that movie.
So far all we have for the Turtles is a bunch of merch, the terrible Toy fair poster on most of it (only posed differently) and mere seconds of actual turtle footage.
We should be getting a 2 minute long trailer today but the next trailer is going to be 36 seconds long...:trolleye:
Really?
Just about 2 months from release and not even a full theatrical trailer yet.

Yep Alberta Film ratings classified the trailer a couple days ago and clocked it at 59 seconds (sorry correction)
But it still wouldn't surprise me if we don't see the same stuff in it. (Tower falling down/brothers voice over/hill slide/Mask joke with one brief added scene). I'm actually hoping that its one of those trailer premiere things that say "tune in tomorrow for the world premiere trailer"
I've been a pretty positive guy on this whole experience however the marketing just isn't doing it for me.

so how about that marketing....ive seen about 2 different spots for transformers along with that oreo commercial
and only one turtles spot
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
3 TV spots
2 trailers and a 3rd coming this week
a macaroni and cheese commercial/ general TMNT promo with V. Ice
Crush soda Promo
Character "weapons" posters
Street style graffiti Character posters.
MTV interview with Megan Fox.
Today Show interview/trailer debut with Will Arnett.
Pizza Hut Promo with the turtles on every box along with the passcode "OOZE" for the website to watch the trailer. These pizzas were sent out to different media outlets.
X-game promo tent with Johnston mural.
All before the initial marketing blitz with two months left to go.
There will be plenty more to come as we get closer to release :D
Edit: UGHshellshocked: The next trailer was classified at 59 seconds long. The 36 seconds was the TV spot ; )

TrickOrTreater

Yeah I know what you mean. I really hope this trailer is all new footage.
Maybe 3...4 seconds of new footage.
What do you think the reason is though? Or do you think they started out short so every other artist drew them that way, too?
I mean, it's entirely possible everyone stuck with it out of "tradition"... But the folks running each iteration could have beefed them up at any point in their history, but nobody really has until now. And personally, I think that their small size is a part of the appeal that most people (though not all) recognize, and it was retained for that reason.
The reason I like them being short, don't know if it was intentional, is because it makes them a bit of an underdog. It also stresses the fact that, despite being vertically challenged, they're still able to use martial arts to their advantage without having to rely on their size and strength alone.
That's a really good point as well! Yeah, that's definitely important. I feel like you need some sort of visibly-obvious stakes, a sense of challenge and danger you can understand just by sight alone. And the classic, short Turtles going up against armies of ninja or robots really sells that. By comparison, the PD Turtles don't look like much could be an immediate threat to them.
The new turtles might be big, but as long as the enemies they are facing are equally as tough, I might not have a problem with that.
Well, the issue I have with that is that you'd need to escalate everything, and hugely, in order to compensate for their size. Even a group of ninja can't be a challenge anymore, because these Turtles can just plow through them or toss them aside like rag dolls. The Shredder can't "just" be an extremely-skilled martial artist anymore - he needs to be in a giant mech suit in order to be a threat. They can even topple over armoured cars with a running/sliding start.
It just seems like a recipe for bigger, over-the-top superhero-level (or Bayformers-style) action pieces, which kind of misses the point of what the TMNT are, IMO.
(I wonder if this discussion is worth its own thread? Just in case the mods frown at going off the topic of marketing...)

I thought it was Sachs sitting in there? But seriously like where can you even hit the new Shredder where he's not armored? Lol, there's definitely no obvious weak points.
Sachs' arms are bare under the exoskeleton arm frames, and his hands and fingers are unprotected to a large degree.
fun fact. most cutting techniques with a katana is about exploiting weak points on an armour. a diagonal upward swing would go for the armpit area, cutting through the softer fabric of the armour. Could be a clue on how to defeat Sachs.

you know with papa johns being attached to TF in the past I am alittle surprised pizza hut is with turtles (both paramount)
maybe they had a contract since way back in the days of the tour that said they would be part of turtles
then again i always find it funny the first turtles movie had mostly sponsorship from Pizza Hut yet they only eat Domino's on screen (only in the first)

I work with "street art" (in print form) on a daily basis, and you can get those sorts of blurry effects pretty much with a spray can. I think one of the things that makes the images seem a bit blurry at times if that the originals are often rather big, while what we see on our screens (and often in print too) is down scaled and scatter of paint ends up looking like "blur" a lot more.
Candy Kappa
06-10-2014, 04:50 PM
The blurry effects seems to be made intentionally, as some places the line work is very crisp. When I first noticed it, I thought some thing was up with my contact lenses (it's late and I've worn them for quite some time)

you said it later down the thread, but yeah, the blur looks to be intentional. The design is, initially pretty cool....but once you really look at it, the faux graffiti style just screams "photoshop".
Which is a freaking shame, because there are some AMAZING stencil and graff artists out there who could do the design total justice. One of my best friends is a stencil artist that does HUGE multicolor geek-centric pieces. I've partied with his "crew" and every one of them is some sort of 80s - 90s geek/pop culture nerd that would die for a chance to do work for the Turtles.

Slightly more armor than usual? Sure. But that's not a bad thing in theory.
This is considerably better than the mess in this new movie.
I can give that armor a pass since it's an android. Eric Sachs? I don't know how he expects to move swiftly in that? Ignore the fact his armor has to run on a battery to even operate so if Donnie disables that he's just a giant hunk of junk that can't move.
