View Full Version : Could a b&w Mirage-styled TMNT Netflix show work?

I feel like a show like this would actually be amazing. Do it similar to Turtles Forever, but only have the Mirage turtles being dark and gritty. I'd say that it should be 2D Animated, but that's just me. The show could be more targeted towards Mature teens and adults, and be called something like "Tales from the TMNT" and do 10 episodes. I think it would be great, and would be super cool for fans of the Mirage stuff.
Would anybody else watch a show like this, and do you think it would be a good idea?

i dont think a full "series" would work
but a one time movie cut up into parts sure
i still say someone should go the matrix/batman/halo dvd shorts route except with the turtles
where each snippet is a lead up to the current or future film

I don't think it needs to be black and white.

A lot of us want it to go the route of DC Animated movies. Taking popular stories from the comics, not just Mirage they could do Archie and IDW to or Image
One-off, direct adaptations of the Leonardo micro/Northampton/Return to New York and City at War story-lines would be incredible.
Just in case any Nickelodeon folks are reading: should something like this be produced, I would pay for them with stacks of cash.

I've constantly screamed for at least a movie version of Mirage #1 (or some other story) in black and white...with red for the bandannas and possible blood. That'd be awesome.
A Netflix series...depending on how long...would probably do better in color.

Any hope for such a thing permanently went out the window when the Viacom/Nick sale happened.
I predict the next 20 years will just be a self-recycling series of TMNT universes that each try to top the other about who can do the best Fred Wolf "reimagining." Because that's seemingly the only thing that interests the rights holders. I wonder how many different origins for Bebop and Rocksteady and the Technodrome can there be... I suspect we'll eventually find out.

We talking the "gore" or everything, because I'm sure that the only green Viacom really cares about isn't the Turtles. If it'd make money...they'd do it. The biggest worry would be "diluting the brand" or confusing the kiddies. *shrugs* You're probably right...

Would definitely love it.
Do I see it happening? No.
Would I love a direct to TV movie like DC has been doing? Would definitely love it.

But... but I've got stacks! Of cash!
I mean... not big stacks or anything. But still...

Our best hope is that the property manages to attract more talented folks with some reverence for the Mirage comics, at least. That's something Marvel's been pretty damn lucky with lately, where most of their mainstream media properties keep the spirit of the characters and their world alive.

Would love for it to happen. Sadly, I don't think it will.

Considering how many times this topic has come up one would think there's enough demand for such a thing to warrant its production... but no luck so far.
There's no better time to do it than the 30th anniversary, c'mon Viacom!
Unfortunately, if anything, we'd sooner get an OT revival of some sort.

I'd love for this to happen, but I concur with the thread that I don't think it actually will. But an easier move would be for Viacom to contract with Netflix to show the 2003 series... or maybe that's more wishful thinking. :tcry:

I can't believe we're discussing about a B&W show in this century when it already seemed like ancient history to even OT fans. There's a reason why NICKELODEON WAY BACK IN 1992 decided to pull the plug on B&W Looney Tunes; they just seemed too old and they colorized any of the classics. That's why there was 4kids; it had dozens of episodes based on Mirage episodes that mostly worked, but it would cost lots of money to animate for a nice series and the odds of success are quite low, and good luck marketing for still a frontier medium.

I would also be really happy with this.

a 10 episode netflix original series a la the marvel shows they're doing. even the tone of those series are along the lines of what i think would work for this. i could even see it happening live action, if the budget wasn't overly-modest.
keep it more street-level (less emphasis on sci-fi/mutation)...purple dragon gang warfare...shredder leading an organized crime ring, with some foot clan ninja/stealth noir action. make it at least pg-13.
ha! it would NEVER happen!

Mirage toyed with the idea while Imagi was still around, but apparently it turned out to be too expensive compared to how many people they expected to actually buy the thing. Maybe when the people who were young kids during the 2003 series grow into their 20s, there might be enough of a nostalgia market to produce what they might find to be a "gritty reboot" of that material that's actually just an amazingly accurate adaption of the source material.

Hey guys. Long time lurker of this site. Been a turtle fan since I was 7 in about 1991 and this is my first post. I have to say I would like a series of mauture animated films that adapted specific stories from the Mirage books, done in the style of the DC animated movies with a tone closer to the 1990 film.

a Mini-series based off Mirage would be completely boss.

In an ideal world hell yes but realistically speaking the prospects of Viacom green lighting anything Mirage-esque aren't that bright and more importantly the turtles being the kind of characters they are it would be a big budget that I'm unsure they'd want to chance on such a project.
But...
Considering that Smallville, a show about the Superman mythos without any actual Superman ran for ten years and now we're getting Gotham a show about the Batman mythos without Batman is happening maybe something similar could be done with turtles.
A netflix mini series about say Detective Miller from Tristan Jones' popular Tales of TMNT stories or a similar character investigating the Foot as it's gearing for war and mysterious creatures with the turtles being on the peripheral. I know a lot of people including myself don't want that for the movie but this context it would be good to focus on the human characters.
You could also have Laura Stanton or again a similar character investigating the same things from a journalist point of view.
You can touch on Casey Jones, Karai, Hun, Baxter Stockman pretty anything in the turtles mythos.
If it did well it would show them there is a market for a proper turtles-centric followup.
I know this is still a pipe dream but ever so slightly less so than a full on Mirage mini series.

At the very least, all you "gritty ninja street action" folks have a small chance of seeing a project like that go through.
Meanwhile, I and the other two people in the "somber, uncanny, later-day Mirage style" camp will be sitting in the cold with our pipe dream.
Forever.

If it happened, it wouldn't be on Netflix. They let their contract with Viacom expire over a year ago.

This. This. This. The whole Nick/Viacom buyout has been catering to a younger crowd with the same thing the OT tried to cater. These references to Mirage from the new property holder in all current medium are not really paying any real respect to Mirage and the Mirage fans. It's just been a little bone they've been throwing that won't do justice. Only time will tell if Nick/Viacom will really pay real respect to the Mirage universe and it's fans in future product.
