View Full Version : 1990 Shredder is one of the lamest villain costumes?

According to this site it is. Something tells me that whoever wrote this article never actually watched the movie.

In the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle comic books and cartoons, Shredder’s appearance is as menacing as his name. Inspired by samurai armor, his muscular physique was often adorned with blades and a cape. Sadly in the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, costume designers removed Shredder’s intimidation factor by dressing him in a clunky helmet and a sparkly purple muumuu. How is anyone supposed to take him seriously?

I call it the Michael Jackson Shredder. The dude is just too slim to fill out the suit. Or the suit is too baggy. Whichever.

I can see what they were going for with it but it didn't quite work well in my opinion. More to do with the material than anything else.

Cape/cloak was unnecessary.

I agree... although I think the guy playing Shredder was awesome.. uh I just cant really say anything bad about it.. I love that shredder but I will agree that the costume was kind of ridiculous.. But PD's Shredder? that is a menacing look.. and I love Fichtner.. he's one of my favorite actors. He's gonna kill it

90s Steve Barron Shredder was intimidating as h*ll.

"this is your family, i am your father..." still sends shivers down my now grown man spine.

I don't see how he's going to be doing any martial arts in that thing, though. Which is kind of Shredder's whole thing.

I can't believe most of you! 1990 Shredder is one of the most intimidating villains in film! The design is perfect and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Reading that makes me furious. For the time..a guy in sparkly purple pajamas came out pretty badass and serious in look and tone.

Oh I'm sure with the magic of cgi he'll be an impressive fighter it's whether the movie can draw the viewer in enough to suspend their disbelief that Shredder-Sachs can move in such a bulky armor otherwise it will just look ridiculous.

That of course is assuming Shredder-Sachs is just a regular guy and not mystically, genetically or technologically enhanced.

The 1990 Shredder was the perfect example of actions trumping appearance. The shimmery fabric was pretty silly, but he was totally deadly in battle, and that matters a lot more than just looking intimidating. He's a dude who could pull off looking a little bit goofy because he had the skills to back it up.

The helmet and shoulder/shin/forearm blades were perfect. Sold the "Shredder" gimmick while staying relatively subtle, as a ninja should be. Go more over-the-top with it and you lose the point.

Judging the costume style of something technically filmed in the late 80s (yeah that "interesting" style period..) with what goes on now... well, that's like expecting the Jaws shark to still look real. lol

Wow I was surprised when I read that! I thought then and still do now that he was the best Shredder! That won't change in my book either unless the Shredder in this does a better performance! Only time will tell.

Uh... yeah, I don't really know what to say to the writer of this article except: I disagree.

Still photos of his costume might seem a little odd by today's standards, but with the way it was used in the film, it worked. It was appropriate to the colour and the atmosphere of the movie.

1990 Shredder kicked major ass - and I don't know about anyone else, but he intimidated the heck out of me!

Also, isn't a muumuu this:

Judging by the person who wrote that article probably saw it once and the Ooze sequel due to her saying "Purple" where it was actually Red in the 1990 movie. Idiots.

This list is terrible. Shredder's costume is pretty great. That helmet is very iconic, right up there with Darth Vader. They did a fantastic job for the time it was made and it matched the tone of the film very well. Also, was pretty close to the comics, another plus.

The sparkly-ness was the only real turnoff to me. And I don't see why he needed that sharp staff... it would've been way better to see him owning the Turtles with his bare hands and wrist blades rather than just make him into some kind of Super Donatello.

It's a mixture. I wouldn't fault anyone for either preference.

As for this trailer, I am calling Paramount right now..

You just answered your own question. They weren't gonna show shredder actually hack and slash the turtles. The spear thing was their way around that.

People complain about 2014 Shredder not being able to fight but Super Shredder, from Secret of the Ooze, was not going to use traditional martial arts either had he actually been in a legitimate battle scene. He was just going to use brute force.

Besides 2014 Shredder probably has realistic mobility but everyone is judging him in the brief moment we see him all blade-heavy, which is probably a specific scene, like with Super Shredder. Which, had we briefly seen that back then, would everyone have complained like they do now?

Besides it makes sense. If you're an evil villain and you have that kind of armor you're going to use it eventually. You're not gonna think...Id rather fight hand-to-hand than use my awesome armor of blades.

Thank you, I thought I'd gone colour blind, I was all like: why is nobody mentioning the fact that it's red? It is red right? Oh my god everything I know is a lie, and then you were all like: But it's red...

His costume was kind of ridicolous, what with the whole glitter, but he made up for it with his awesome presence, charisma and deadliness in battle.
Besdes, it was made in the end of the 80-s, so...yeah.

I love movie Shredder, but I have to admit the cape is a bit strange. It's not just the spangley pattern, but the concertina folds are pretty flamboyant for a secretive ninja master. As a kid, I was mildly perplexed when Tatsu ceremonially rolls the cape over Shredder's shoulders. I figured that if Shredder tried to do it himself, he would rip a big hole in it, in which case it seems like more trouble than it's worth.

You thought those shoulder spikes would be a problem in the 1990 movie, the whole outfit of the new movie one should give the user quite a bit more trouble. Yikes!!!Spikes!!!!:teek::teek:

While I am not a fan of the fabric they used for Shredder ' s costume in the first film (that stuff was everywhere in the 80's and 90's!!), I think they're exaggerating the glittery factor. He didn't look like a disco ball or a girl at prom. :) Given the time period, we're lucky he wasn't in some kind of silver lamé! (That's what my costumes were largely made of back then...:teek:)

I thought the first film portrayed Shredder as a formidable opponent in keeping with the tone of the rest of the movie. His costuming was pretty sleek and impressive at the time. I think the basic design was pretty good.

I think the current expectation is that TMNT needs to be on board with Avengers/Batman/Xmen/Superman/etc style design and action to be relevant and resonate with people. To people expecting that kind of universe (complete with city block destroying action), I can see why 1990 Shredder might be underwhelming or odd. And our expectation for costuming switched to black leather or minimalist, matte stuff in dark color palettes, so the red fabric with silver sheen is going to look dated. Fashion changes. I kinda feel like it's unfair to hold up a movie made with completely different aesthetics, effects and budget constraints up against movies that are made now that benefit from completely different technology and have very different goals and design sensibilities.

1990 Shredder's costume was less awesome looking supervillain and more like a ninja gangster who was eccentric enough to put on a little hardware to add to his criminal-scary-ninja - master rep. (Or maybe he just wanted to stop biting his nails...) I think it fits with the fact that he was not a take over the world/destroy the world kind of character. The battle he and the turtles and Splinter were engaged in was personal, not global. A more outlandish costume wouldn't have worked. They went as far as they could without being too cheesy. (And even cracked jokes about his appearance, because the movie didn't take itself too seriously. ) Besides, in the 80's and 90's and there were so many vile costumes and fashion trends that 1st movie Shredder only rates as worst costume if you deliberately ignore a whole host of other movies and TV shows.

I am of the belief that The Shredder in the 1990 film, like a lot of the rest of the movie, was perfect as an adaptation of the Mirage books.

Agree with this (but didn't think the costume was silly just off-note is all), and besides the fighting skills, the fact that 1990 Shredder's character was imprisoning and physically abusing Splinter (where Splinter is severely weakened), plus manipulating the Turtles' emotions about killing Splinter was a classic methodical, exploitative villain move. In other words, "his bark was far smaller than his bite" which is how a deceptive, cunning villain should be.

I never had a problem with the costume but always felt it was slightly awkward because he looked too small for it. The design was fine. The only problem I had with movie 1 Shredder that I laughed at then and still laugh at now was when Splinter used Mikey's nunchucks to toss him off the roof. It just makes me laugh because it looks so silly to me and I want to toss in a goofy sound effect, like Shredder going, "Whee!" or tossing in Goofy's trademark scream or a lame Arnold Schwarzenegger Commando-style one liner or something.

Just the latest in the "Everything back then sucked, but everything Now is awesome" fad that's been going on. What a crock of sh*t all of that is.

Honestly, though, I wouldn't be surprised if PD was "encouraging" various media outlets to do this kind of thing, downplay older versions of the franchise and play up the new one by comparison. Studios do that kind of thing allllll the time. Sure would explain the sudden surge in articles stating "(This thing about older TMNT) Sucked".

I definitely think Shredder in the 1990 movie was one of the best translations of a villain from some other form of media to the screen that we had seen at that time. I think he still holds up pretty well, as still pictures just don't do it justice. Within the context of the movie, it really works. You have to mix together the look, the voice, and the dialogue to really get the menacing presence that the 1990 movie Shredder had.

I wonder what it says about me that purple is my favourite colour...

I always noticed that a lot of the Predacons and Decepticons had purple in their colour scheme as well.
