View Full Version : Can Shredder perform martial arts with his Armor?

There has been some skepticism over whether or not we will see any martial arts in this film. Mostly with the Shredder and his armor. Could he still be a master martial artist with all the armor on? I've heard that the suit somehow makes him faster. William Fichtner has been quoted saying,
William Fichtner
I had a stunt double named Anis Cheurfa, and he would do ninja moves that were so otherworldly they appeared as though they were being performed in Zero G. Anis is a true master like none other.
Just a few videos of Shredder's double.
/Uyc8HQKPZUM
This second video is very interesting.. Raphael vs Shredder fight. Both doubles facing off :D
WARNING- a few curse words.

This one.. Shredders double, is the one with the short hair.
/IsdVYOM0SX8
/FjKTC5LhYcw
Honestly.. I think we are in for a few serious surprises. Lets not forget.. Like the turtles, Shredders armor is CGI. So the stunt double will be wearing a Mo-cap suit while fighting.
Maybe there will be fight scenes without the armor. Who knows. But From what it seems.. he will not just be slicing people in half. It actually looks like Shredder could very well be a badass martial artist in this movie..
Thoughts?

I still believe the Shredder we see in the tv spot is really Krang in his android body and the Turtles will have to fight both at the end with Sachs in the ancient Saki Armor.
Just seeing all these martial art demos floating around from the martial art doubles kinda cements that idea.

Let's hope it doesn't look fake as hell seeing a large bulky shredder iron man and hulk sized turtles fight and move as fast as their smaller and more agile comic/cartoon counterparts..... That'll make the movie look even worse.

This makes me very excited! imagining lightening fast martial arts moves, no seriously imagine Shredder moving really fast, and the Turtles are like how do we even hit this guy? it would kinda be like the first movie where the Turtles are huddled together, and Shredder is just standing there waiting for one of them to attack! that would be really cool

I'm more concerned about, can Sachs do Martial Arts or is he completely dependent of the suit to match up with the turtles.
If the suit enhances Sachs abilities, I'm sure he'll be able to perform combat, as long as it's not too flashy and "Hollywood", the suit looks too crude to be able to performance art moves.

Calling other peoples opinions "BS" like you just did in the other thread should pretty much be considered trolling. No one would like it if I came in here saying things like " Better than a pink panther Shredder that looks like Prince fighting four fake ass looking rubber suits" But at this point people are sick of these pathetic arguments and the flame bait that always leads to arguments. But I guess you didn't get enough the past couple days huh?
So maybe we can discuss things like adults without childish flame bait and FOR ONCE avoid starting another thread war.. Whatdya say?

That's understandable. And reasonable. Thank you for responding like an adult.
I'm glad that some understand that it's all about delivery. And you delivered your concerns/opinions in a non flammable, mature manner. If people could conduct themselves this way I think there would be a LOT less arguing around here. Making things a lot easier for everyone to participate.. while also giving the mods a break.
I hope the martial arts is authentic. I wouldn't care for a Shredder that just sliced things and didn't fight. Same with the turtles. Well know in a month and a half

Even though male gymnasts have shown that one can be relatively muscular and flexible/agile, but for the most part I have to agree with this above because wearing metal armor is extremely heavy and taxing on the human body. (It would be like expecting a knight in full metal armor from the Middle Ages able to perform gymnast moves and agility.) It's gonna be very awkward seeing a mortal man doing numerous somersaults in full metal armor. Then again we don't know if Shredder is supposed to be a mere mortal man, and these are supposed to be superhuman, 'roided strong Turtles, so who knows...
If some people want/like that, so be it, but the excessive strength and ostentatious metal armor with jagged blades all over seems superfluous for a Turtle movie I would enjoy. **shrug**

this is kinda my concern as well..if shredder is a mech to fight the turtles and performs martial arts a may come off as super cheesy and fake. when them having to animate a bulky shredder doing sleek ninja moves
i hate to say it but i think we may see more "iron monger smash" than "high ya!"

I think we'll see maybe one or two moves but for the most part, I think he'll just be deflecting hits off his blades and perhaps a counter attack here and there. Just a guess based off a few things I know.

My main concern about fighting in this movie, that it will consist from "hulksmashes" with few karate moves here and there. Otherwise, the whole point in turning Turtles into minihulks and Shreeder in the Megatron is kind of obsolete.
Besides, I can hardly imagine how this Shreddertron will move fast and at the same time retain sense of weight. If he is really will be presented as heavy as he looks from the pictures, then no acrobatics and no elaborate moves from him. Of couse, if they want to keep this stuff at least partly realistic, which, given some evidences, probably not the case.

WHY do people keep Totally IGNORING all the evidence Right in front of them, William Fitchener all but YELLED at you, that there are going to be extreme martial arts in this movie,
The one live action Video of human tmnt YEAH leo's a stunt double plus All the other stunt people in this movie, for all the turtles

its not so much people ignoring it ...at the time fichtner said that we really had no idea of what shredder looked like
and no offense to him but what does he consider extreme martial arts?
the real concern most of us have right now is if this shredder looking the way he does performing flips and kicks look natural in a ninja like way
picture ironman being a ninja in just doesnt work and wouldn't look natural
also remember Dragonball Evolution was said to have extreme martial arts and that it closely followed its source

i mean, i get where the "maybe the suits too bulky" perspective is coming from, and i DEF wanna see the shredder get down on some ninja-like fisticuffs, but its not like he's a luchador or something.
maybe the full on super-shredder, crazy-bladed, 2012 shredder armor on steroids is just, like, i dunno...his "final boss" outfit and throughout the movie he uses something a little less bulky.
the gauntlet glove that fichtners wearing in that new pic doesnt look insanely big.

This Shredder is more evil warlord then ninja in this it seems. I have a feeling the stuff he says and the orders he gives..are going to be brutal. I think they really are going to make him dark on a different level, or at least attempt to. I'm just not sold we're going to see him performing a lot of martial arts but I hope I'm wrong. We're not going to see Karl Ruprecht Kroenen here. Well at least not from the sequel.

not being hostile just posting Hard proven evidence, that al but prove at least one point in the movie we can except "shredder" doing hardcore martial arts. Thats it.

You're correct. It's more evil warlord Shredder then what we've seen before. I don't mind it. He'll fight.

of course he can perform stuff, he is wearing power armor...
That means he can do it even better!
Plus he is going to need it when he is fighting the Olog-hai.
Specially the one that can flip a truck with his stick. Im sure we are going to see all those moves performed in the ending fight against shred and all failing.

Of course he can. I've said so before even as recently as a few days ago (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showpost.php?p=1282675&postcount=10). That's not really an issue with me.
The question is will the movie have an in-built explanation for how Shredder-Sachs can fight in such bulky suits or at least draw the audience in enough to get us to suspend our disbelief so it wont look stupid.
the shredder suit from trailer 4 has a slightly different design than the one we have been seeing this whole time.
Unlikely but is it possible we'll be getting a version of the Shredder Elite here? The twisted, mutated Foot goons that they garbed in Shredder's armor. What is often thought by fans as clones of the Shredder?
Hmmm....better forget I said that. The likelihood of Leibesman and co reading Return To New York is pretty darn slim that it's barely worth considering unfortunately.

Can/Will He? Of course he will, it's a movie.
Would he realistically be able to? Not hardly. Walking in a straight line would be a chore while decked out in all that. But again, it's just a movie, so it doesn't really matter, I guess.
The concern shouldn't be, "Will Shredder fight", it should be, "Will it look horrible, cheesy, and fake?" We shall see. On the whole, not a fan of ShredderTron, Iron Shredder, or whatever other names the kids are coming up with for ol' Edward Shredder-Hands up there. It looks like a guy got dumped in glue and rolled around a junkyard for a while. Guy's got sh*t sticking out literally everywhere, it's atrocious. Tell me he's got a bladed c*ck ring, and I'll 100% believe you. Because why NOT just stick something sharp literally every single place you can, to really hammer home that this guy is, in fact, called "Shredder"?
But anyway, yeah, he'll fight, I just think it might look... odd. Like all CGI characters, he'll probably move *waytoof*ckingfast* so your eyes can't fully focus on the fact he doesn't really exist in a 3D space. Or, as someone else said, they may just have him "Hulk Smash" everything, which would also be kinda stupid looking. I'unno, we'll see.

I have to admit when I saw 2014 Shredder's armor in the trailer, I thought it was a preview for the new Transformers movie.
I don't know... all the armor is so visually distracting (like some of the Turtles features, but that's a whole other issue we've all discussed) in trying to notice every feature on it. If the movie really wanted to make Shredder "badass", just show some gruesome bloody scenes of him quickly and deceitfully killing the innocent, or his betrayers, mercilessly rather than using this flamboyant superficial approach to emphasize his "badass" character. But whatever...

I'm not seeing the problem with a guy in a huge armored suit doing Ninja moves?
Why would you think that the suit would have to be slow and bulky, and obviously if the guy in the suit didn't know how to do the martial arts the suit wouldn't be able to do it unless it's pre programmed or something.
I guess people have never seen Gundam or any other large robots fighting that don't understand.
And of course it's going to look fake it's a big metal suit fighting 4 mutant animals it's not something you tend to see everyday, I don't know why anyone would think a movie like this wouldn't have lots of fight scenes.

We just need to see a shot or two of him in action. I REALLY am hoping he isn't a Halo brute smashing his steel fists around like Super Shredder. I'd like to see some moves and if they happen to incorporate all of those blades, fine.
They just went overboard with the retractable blades. That's a sellout to me. Shredder isn't Freddy Krueger.

Can someone please tell me when we have ever gotten a flippy, high flying, show off shredder? Hasn't he always been a really traditional fighter? Grounded with blocks, counters, and forward attacking? So why am I seeing people writing about if he is flipping around it might look unrealistic? And They think his suit will just be smash and pound. Could you not block a kick and counter in this suit? Could the suit not do forward attack or perform a high kick? If it is a mech suit, don't all mech suits make the person in it stronger, faster, and more agile? Any answers to the questions that I have raised?

Counter-Question: Was Shredder ever any less effective at fighting in any other version when he was NOT physically living inside of Megatron? Because I think this guy here is (over) compensating for something, with his rakes-for-hands and whatnot.
Less snarky, semi-serious reply: Anyone who's even worn a regular suit of armor can tell you that they're a bitch to move around in, are heavy as hell, and aren't exactly receptive to graceful movements, such as, I don't know, martial arts and stuff. This guy is wearing a suit of armor PLUS the entire surplus supply of Dave's Army/Navy Store strapped to it. Not only must it weigh about 700lbs, but again, if he so much as absent-mindedly goes to scratch an itch, he's gonna accidentally gut himself. I don't care how "It's just a movie and it's bad-ass-looking", it's the most impractical and over-cluttered costume design I think I've ever seen, and I hate it.
You know what it looks like? One of those MAD Magazine parodies from back in the day, when they'd make fun of TMNT and stuff, that Shredder design from the movie looks like something they'd draw to make fun of the character, not be like, "Oh, yeah, THIS is how he SHOULD look!"

Well I never stated he was less effective, only that he has always been a more traditional fighter. So the question has no value on any of my points.
So is it a Mech suit or just armor? If it is just armor then your megatron comment was ridiculous to say the least. If it is a mech suit then it being heavy doesn't matter, as the suit will be the driving power for combat. So can a mech suit like the one Sachs is wearing not do any traditional martial arts moves? Block attacks? High kicks? Counters? Maybe a jump kick? If yes, may I get your arguments with evidence to back it up? Im all for changing my mind.
So your argument is based purely on your taste of design?

I'm just wondering how this wolverine-transformer-super shredder can even move!
If he does do a lot of martial arts, I just don't know how he will look natural in it. Unless he shreds (HA) some of his armor off before he fights. At least his cape man, it can't be light being made out of metal and crap.

i HATE that technique. its supposed to be an 'immersive' experience, involving the audience in the fight, but really all it does it gives me a headache.
what kills me is that Paul Greengrass does that A LOT in the original Bourne Trilogy, which is damn shame considering how elaborate, and amazing that choreography is.
if they do this with the Turtles, it will break my heart. into pieces. pieces.

There's nothing "ridiculous" about any of it, champ. Megatron is what he resembles, so that's what I went with for a comparison. He sure as sh*t doesn't look like most of the "Shredders" I"ve ever seen.
I don't know, or care, if it's a mech suit, but if it is, that's just one more stupid and pointless choice made to "modernize" something that was perfectly fine beforehand. It doesn't NEED to be a mech suit. But, that is the only way that monstrosity could even move in the first place, so it probably is.
So, I guess my main objection is based on the design being stupid, and the rest on it being impractical? I don't know. There's nothing TO like about it, honestly, so I don't see why I should have to defend myself for not liking it. It's hideous. I'm sorry if you don't think so. But it is.

Every time I see something new involving this versions shredder I keep thinking of Bay's Megatron. I'm sure I'm not the only person who sees the resemblance, but his suit seems very impractical.
But that could easily change once we see the full functionally of the suit, it could be less about high flying kicks and more well...slicing?

Resemble - have qualities or features, especially those of appearance,
in common with (someone or something); look or seem like.
You - Was Shredder ever any less effective at fighting in any other version when he was NOT physically living inside of Megatron? Because I think this guy here is (over) compensating for something, with his rakes-for-hands and whatnot.
What I read was you stating he would not be any less effective if he did not have a suit that is a giant robot. So you were typing about looks? OR? As I stated, I never said shredder having the new armor would make him less or more effective, just that he is a more traditional fighter, and if he could use the armor (if a mech suit) as a traditional martial artist. Your attempt at humor was poor, and you never gave a real answer to the question.
If you don't care it is a mech suit, why reply to my post? You argued about it being heavy armor no one could fight or move in. If that is the case then yes it is stupid. If it is a mech suit then could it not work as a traditional
martial arts fighting suit? That is the question.
What makes a mech suit that can make you stronger, faster, and more agile impractical? You don't need to defend your opinion on why you don't like it. I never asked that question. So why bring up the case for you not liking it? I never did.
I asked specific questions. You gave me arguments that flopped.
I cant care any less what shredder looks like. As long as the movie is good.

Can this armor, if a mech suit, not do traditional martial arts? If you don't think so, can you backup your claims with some evidence? If its not a mech suit then YES it is a stupid idea. That is all. If you don't care why reply? It is because you're just like everyone on this forum. You like to debate, talk, and discuss tmnt. But when you go around hurling boring humor and cliche arguments, then I am going to counter. I get why you don't like the new movie or anything about it. I honestly thought I did answer your questions. At least in my last post. I guess I didn't. Oh well.
Looking back to the original post you seem to have taken issue with, I'll try harder: Yes, Shredder could *conceivably* do all that stuff you're asking about, because it's a movie. That doesn't mean it won't look cheesy and fake, which it probably will. Fair enough? Did I "get it right" this time? Yeesh.
And it's less to do with you being "new" and more to do with the tone your posts seem to have. Nobody gets anywhere around here by snarking the "vets". No, it isn't fair. found online when looking up utrom
Korobon[edit]
Korobon is an Utrom who declared himself ambassador to Earth from the Utrom Confederation. He addressed the U.N. on live television and explained what the Utroms had planned to do on Earth. He appeared in Volume 4 of the Mirage comic.
Mr. Mortu[edit]
The name is actually "Utrom" spelled backwards, Mr. Mortu is an Utrom commander (voiced by Dan Green) and one of the Utroms stranded on Earth when the Utrom criminal Ch'rell forced the prison ship transporting him to crash in feudal Japan in the 2003 series. He remains on Earth though the centuries, later stationed at the Utrom's Tokyo headquarters following World War II. He is saved from muggers by a young Hamato Yoshi and Yukio Mashimi, who discover his secret during the scuffle. He inducts both into the ranks of the Guardians, and is forced to evacuate the Tokyo facility after Mashimi betrays them to the Shredder.
In the present day, he is stationed in New York City in the TCRI building, the Utroms' New York base of operations. When Splinter is injured in the Turtles' assault on the Shredder's headquarters, Mortu has him brought to the TCRI building and cared for, unbeknownst to the Turtles. When the Turtles return to Earth from their voyage across space, it is Mortu who transmatted them home and who brings the healed Splinter to them. He shows the Turtles and Splinter the origins of the Utroms on Earth using a communal mind pod, but the experience goes terribly wrong when Baxter Stockman hacks the system and traps the Turtles and Splinter in the simulation. As the Shredder (by then revealed to be the alias of the criminal Ch'rell) and his forces destroy the building, Mortu and the Utroms transmat back to their homeworld. Before they leave, Mortu presents Splinter with gift: an orb containing memories of his master Yoshi from the Guardian archives.

I am assuming Sach's is obsessed with his armor and keeps making it more and more powerful. This might not make sense to everyone, but I'm almost positive that I'd respond better to pretty much everything about the Shredder armor if it was something done in a sequel and not the first movie out of the box. It's a whole lot to take in all at once.
Like, if the first movie had a more grounded take, and after being defeated, he felt he had to resort to extreme escalation in the sequel. It would all just look and feel more organic. I don't know if that makes sense to anyone else.

Absolutely makes sense and I agree. Perhaps it does happen in this, but it might be too much to handle. We might see flashback scenes where Saki was defeated. I'm not sure, but if that is the route they are going, it puts my mind a LITTLE bit more at ease about this mechanical stuff.

Sure. Ideally, I would think most people would generally prefer a more familiar take/version for the 1st movie, and then for a follow-up, be more accepting of liberties and such. Depending on how it's handled of course.

Not really the audience for this movie is the general public that kind of sorta remember what Ninja Turtles were.
They did similar things with Transformers about reveals and the raked in the cash easily.
So glowing eyes means there isn't a person in a suit, I think you have missed a lot of fictional armors in sci fi.

Well there's some people convinced that we'll be seeing a grounded Shredder early on in the movie who then gets upgraded however I remember many of the same people convinced the turtles would start off with a more traditional look and out the accessories on for the final battle. I really don't mind the mechanical element. Saki is as narcissistic as they come. Plus an opportunist. If someone proposed to him something that would make him more powerful and more of a threat to the city and the turtles, he would take it in a heartbeat. William Fichtner is being portrayed as Shredder, but I don't think he actually is. I think he is the real Shredder's good guy face. He is the voice of good, pushing the Foot Clans fake intentions of doing well for the city when at the end of the day, The Foot is the organization wreaking havoc, while Saki, like a true ninja, is in the shadows at the top. I think William's character is a wealthy businessman up to no good with the mutagen, which Shredder is very interested in as a possible weapon. Fichtner is Shredder's mouthpiece to the city, keeping his criminal operation in the dark by paying off politicians and police. A manipulator and liar is the perfect role for Fichtner. By this, Shredder is playing both sides of the coin, pinning good vs evil, while he stays in the dark reaping benefits from that very struggle, making it look like his company is promoting healthy ideals and projects throughout the city while in the background, something far more sinister is going on.
Maybe I have just learned to live with it. Those extra spikes come off, so I don't really mind them. I think it's cool he has them like throwing stars but if he misses they come back.

There's a whole lot of stuff jammed into (supposedly) 90 or so minutes. The pacing alone could potentially ruin this movie, just because of how much they'd have to rush through every single thing. Where is there even room to establish "regular" Shredder before jumping right to Mech Shredder or Cyber Shredder or whatever, all in the same movie? I just think they're doing too much all at once in this thing. Most of Bay's movies have the same issue, where things fly by so fast you can't fully wrap your brain around any of it, and then nothing has any impact, but man, does it look pretty. Even though he's only producing and not directing, I can see from the trailers that a lot of his "Style" is definitely intact, here. I can see we're in for a lot of "Bad Joke/Bad Joke/Explosion, Fast-Talking Exposition, Bad Joke/Bad Joke/Explosion, Repeat", which makes me really feel like plot and character are not the focus.
Still not sure if the movie's only 90 minutes, though, as I've heard different things, but if so, yeah, that'll be a problem. Although, frankly, I think that entire "Style" of filmmaking is more the problem, rather than just the length. Some of the Transformers 4 reviews so far are saying that at a butt-numbing 3 hours long, they STILL have no idea what actually happened in the movie.
Anyways, yeah, I guess they could find a way to do "Regular Shredder" and "Mega Shredder" in the same movie, but man, that's gonna be one crammed movie, if so. I'unno. Just seems too much too fast.

All valid points. It's why 1990 is perfection. A ton of characters but everyone got their fair share of spotlight.
Would I like a different take? Sure, but this film is not for me.

I've been thinking similar. but, ya know, I have to wonder if they're doing something similar to the X-Men movies. When the first one came out there was a lot of uncovered back story that was traced later on. As much as I squirm at that entire rendition of the characters, the concept worked to drag in those outside of the cult following. Could this be similar?

Not that I don't agree that there seems to be a lot of story...but gauging all of this on the Transformers movies, they are all over 2 hours, the 1st and shortest being 144 minutes, or 2 hrs and 24 minutes.
I know that it has little bearing on the Turtles, but it's possible this could be almost 2 and a half hours....or more.

Yeah, I honestly have no idea, but someone somewhere said 90 minutes so I was mostly going by that. That seems way too short for what they're trying to do, even though that's fairly normal for an "action movie for kids" these days. I think the determining factor in length will be whether the Powers-That-Be are looking at it more as a kids' movie or a "for everyone" movie. If it's the latter, it'll probably be two hours or so.
We still don't know, I just think it looks kind of "crammed" already.

Have we got a rating yet? That will really help gauge the run-time.

I'm sure the movie length will be similar to the 1990 movie. If you read that leaked script that didn't sound like over a 90 minute movie.
