The previous 4 movies had a short running time, This is due to them being family friendly films, Family films are known to be around 90 minutes or less.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles = 93 Minutes
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze = 88 Minutes
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: 96 Minutes
TMNT: 87 Minutes
If the new TMNT film is PG-13, Then there is that possibility that it could have a running time around 2 hours. Now I'm all for that cause i always felt movies with shorter running time are always rushed and they don't leave room for character development. This is the perfect opportunity for this new movie to explore the characters of all the Turtles so that we can get to know them more.

Jesus christ. I hope the movie isn't 2 and a half hours long.
A ton of movies coming out lately have been long for no goddamn reason. Was 2 hours really needed for a Vince Vaughn comedy? Ninja Turtles is an action comedy. No need to have it drag on forever.

I can see it being n hour and 20 minutes. It seems to have a bare bones plot and they're not putting any effort into it.

Well, It doesn't have to be exactly 2 hours and 30, But within just the 2 hour Range.

It really depends on how enjoyable or good the movie is, then I won't care about the length. (I enjoyed long movies like Titanic and Gone With the Wind, but those are legendary movies with universal acclaim.)
...But since this is a TMNT movie and plus my expectations for this film are not really high, I'm expecting around an hour and a half, maybe 2 hours at most.

What's the average length of one of the Transformers movies?
Your welcome....
EDIT: Dear god...it's 2.48 hours. We're doomed.
EDIT x2: BUT.....Liebsman's other movies are around 90 minutes. The average duration of Battle LA, Texas Chainsaw the Beginning, and Wrath of the Titans is 1.7 hours.

The movie is still being shot and then it needs post production, any potential re-shoots, editing, sound etc.
In the end:
Transformers 3: 154min
Transformers 2: 150min
Transformers: 144min
A Nightmare on Elm St.: 95min
Bad Boys 2: 147min
Bad Boys: 118min
The Rock: 136min
Armageddon: 151min
Pearl Harbor: 183min
That's just looking at some of his movie. I dont know if he has any shorter than 90min.

Either way, I'm thinking this'll be around 120 minutes, more or less.

Calm down, buddy. 2 hours isn't the worst timing if they utilize it well. Like what someone said, it's a good length of time for action and character development. Last thing we need is another rushed TMNT product.

I'm hoping for around 120 minutes. 90 feels short for a live action blockbuster to me, especially for an origin film that has to establish a lot.
I dig TMNT1 a lot but there's plenty room for more scenes in there if they'd wanted.
But then I'm always one to love long films. Most of my favorites tend to run long (150+ minutes) Could TMNT sustain a running time that long? Personally, with the right story and pacing, I really think it could. And it would be awesome!
I've really never understood those who don't like long films. I love movies, and I'll sit through as much as I have to because I'm enjoying every minute of it. And there are plenty of films that deserve their long running times.
More isn't always better... that's not what I'm trying to say. But when there's likely to be at least 2 years, if not 3+, until TMNT 2 (assuming we're that 'lucky'), I'd like a beefier film so we have more to dig into until the next one is out.

When the movie becomes engaging and your getting into the story and the world it creates, You often forget about the movie ever being long.
The people who complain about movies being too long in general are the kind who get bored at certain parts that they would deem boring.

Or....and I'm just spit balling here...some movies don't make good use of their time and you really do feel the length.
I agree, that if a movie is engaging and you're invested in the story, length isn't an issue. Strip all of that away and a long movie can feel like it goes on FOREVER.....FOREVER....H-Q7b-vHY3Q

It'll be a little over an hour and a half, maybe just under two hours. They'll never be able to keep the "jokes" going for longer than that, so forget it going over two. Carve out a decent 20-30 minutes to address the origin and various plot points relating to it, a solid 30-40 of "action scenes", and the rest "jokes & exposition". 100-110 minutes sounds about right.

They barely have enough material for a 90-minute movie as it is, based on what they're trying to do with it. I'd be fine with a 90-minute movie that didn't drag, over a 3-hour "let's cram in every bit of minutiae from the entire TMNT canon" farce that had people rolling their eyes at the 500th pizza joke. If it goes near two hours, people are gonna be chewing their own arms off to leave.
Having too much of a good thing is a real problem. Having too much of *this movie*, on the other hand... heh, that's an entirely different problem they're gonna have to deal with.

You don't know that. You don't know anything about this movie. For all we know, it'll be two hours and leave people wanting more. In a good way.

We know plenty if we know what to look for in the information we do have. We haven't had anything spelled out for us, no, but there is sufficient evidence to suggest that the movie won't be great. It might *look* great, but they're not aiming very high.
Giant afro wig, bro. That's an example of the type of "humor". It's a small detail that says a lot. It says we're supposed to see Whoopi Goldberg, in a TMNT movie, with a gigantic afro, and chuckle at the ridiculousness of it all. This, despite the fact that neither Whoopi Goldberg or giant afros are funny at all on their own, and neither adds anything to a TMNT film. It's only one thing, sure, but it indicates a lot about the angle from which they're approaching this project.
We can also surmise, this late in the game (it's still coming out in spring, isn't it?), that April and Vernon have some sort of "relationship" aside from working together. You may not be aware of this, but it is in fact a "rule" that every "blockbuster" movie, or any movie based on a popular property, has to have a "romance" element. It's done to appeal to women, because they're 50-60% of the population and Hollywood wants their cash. It's why they made up Rachel Dawes for "Batman Begins", despite the fact that Batman's origin didn't need a love story and her character's existence really caused more problems for everyone else than anything. So far, it looks like Vernon is the male lead, so we can all but assure they'll at least tease something between him and April. If they were going to use Casey at all for this movie, they're running out of time, so I don't think they are. I don't really care to see Vernon macking on April. Odds are we will, and that's pretty dumb.
The fact that much of the early script did make it into the movie also shows that they really don't know or care about what they're doing, they just want to get the movie done. I mean, they're already filming it, and they're still announcing new characters and actors in a piecemeal fashion, almost if it's still not finished behind the scenes. For all we know they're still working on what the movie is supposed to be like. It's actually entirely possible it's an "Alien 3" situation, where they already started filming to make the release date despite having no actual finished, complete script. It happens more than you think, and the results are usually not stellar. The studio wants the movie done. The earlier script was what they were working from up until fairly recently, and in "Hollywood-time" anything they've come up with since then absolutely HAD to have been a rush job. There simply wasn't time for the studio to come up with, review, and approve anything too different from what they already had. So what most likely happened, is they took 3 or 4 rejected scripts, watched a few episodes of the old cartoon, and started combining pieces of all the rejected ideas and changing character names to better match the cartoon show. Simply put, the story is likely going to be pretty weak. Add in arbitrarily changing Shredder's backstory ("allegedly"), and it just looks like, on paper at least, a big mess.
By all accounts, it will *look* great. I'm betting it will have awesome CGI and the fight scenes will be exciting enough to make some people overlook some of what's wrong with it. I'm sure it will be "fun", and "exciting", and all that. But I want something *more* than that. I didn't want a "it's fun if you shut your brain off and just go with it" kind of movie, but seriously, that's what it looks like to me, based on absolutely everything we DO know so far. I still think it will be better than some people are expecting, but some people are expecting it to literally make people get cancer. I just think it's going to be needlessly juvenile to the point of annoyance.
You can go on your usual hundred paragraph long justifications, but it doesn't change the fact everything you're saying is an assumption. You could be wrong, you could be right. No one knows.

I hope it's the best thing ever and I'll be the first one to say so if it is. I'm just callin' it like I see it so far. I'll be the first one to say I was wrong if it turns out great.

Aside from that one crummy photo of a sewer set piece, we haven't caught as much as a glimpse of a single scene or actor who wasn't shot on the open streets of NYC. We have no idea what or who has been filmed on soundstages, or even just inside buildings. We really can't guess whether they have "enough material" for a two hour movie.
And if every Transformers movie can go well over 2 hours, with their garbage storylines, I don't see why TMNT can't.

Chances ar eit will be a long movie, Transformer has a genral run time of about
TF1-144 minutes
TF2-150 minutes
TF3-157 minutes
Wrath of the titans-100 minutes
Battle LA-116 minutes
so im betting its going to be 120 minutes give or take

Take into the account that the running time also counts for Opening Credits and End Credits. The movie could be a little over 2 hours, But there might be a few minutes of open credits and end credits thrown in, and sometimes an end credit scene.

even with the long time frame TF3 had i felt like we had a new character shoved in every 10 minutes

Agreed. It will float in the middle time wise, and the lack of effort is damned SHAME. The franchise deserves better.
Nothing personal and I mean no offense here but, I don't understand how anyone can think there was a "lack of effort" put into making this film.. Its hasn't been released yet. I think it would take a lack of effort to write a story that has already been written, create designs that have already been created. Don't you? This movie has been in motion for almost five years now bc they wanted to get it right. That to me is not a lack of effort at all and anyone saying so is insulting every person that has dedicated serious amounts of time and energy into making this movie. Rather than saying what a "lack of effort" it is I wish people would stop being so entitled and start appreciating the fact that were getting a new 130 million dollar TMNT film.

But this is the deal, it's not just us 80's fans that are bitchin, and the Turtles do have an entire new generation of fans thanks to the Nick toon (which is a great compromise across the entire TMNT lore) They are complaining about the looks too and are confused as to why there is such a different movie out compared to what they are seeing in the toon. So, it's not just people stuck in the 80's. Not sure how many pages the Blue Door script was, but I do know that in professional screenplays, each page is meant to equal approximately 1 minute of screen time.

Not sure how many pages the Blue Door script was, but I do know that in professional screenplays, each page is meant to equal approximately 1 minute of screen time.
So if you have access to the script, take the page count, maybe add 5-10 minutes and there you go. :D
Thanks for this. 8)
if this is true then the blue door script was 119 pages and adding 7 min (just to meet in the middle) would make the storyline its self aprox 126 min...... hopefully they kept it about the same with this new script
see that why i dont care what they fans say about transformers. They gained so many new fans because of that movie, and the same will be done with this movie Just people being Vocal Annoyances. Just wish people would stop with the This doesn't look like the 80's so it suck and thus MBay is raping my Childhood, its really stupid.Honesty, I don't know why anyone would care how many "fans" there are.

I hope the movie is a little over 2 hours. Good, bad, great, really bad, mediocre, really mediocre. Bring it. If this movie is that long at least certain portions of it will get time to breathe due to the running length of the movie. There would be a possibility because of that.

Same. Found footage has been done to death at this point, and do they really need to be going that 'realistic' and edgy? I mean, this is a movie about giant turtles who wear colored headbands and fight a guy who may very well be a pink octopus-alien in a suit of armor.

According to a friend of mine who contacted his local theater, the film clocks in at 90 minutes. However, that may not be accurate; Possible speculation on the part of the theater.
Too short? How much longer should it be?
TigerClaw
07-01-2014, 10:41 PM
I say 2 hours, The film needs enough time for Character Development, It has to explain the Origin, It has to show each turtle with there moments to shine, The back story behind Splinter, Shredder and the Foot Clan.
Keep in mind the Running Time counts the opening credits to the end credits. I wish there was a way to check on the actual running time of movies that shows the footage itself minus the credits. when you look at that, it would seem a lot shorter.

Breadcrab

2 hours would be ideal in my opinion. Make it any shorter and you run the risk of underdeveloping certain story elements, much like in TMNT 2007.
I mean, this is a pretty stuffed movie considering you have the four Turtles, Splinter, April, Vernon, Eric Sachs, Karai, the origins of the Foot Clan and possibly Oroku Saki and Baxter. Fleshing all of that out will take some time, and on top of all that you need the awesome action scenes.
That rumored 90 minute runtime seems like a placeholder to me, but if it does turn out to be true, I'll immediately suspect that a ton of footage may have been cut for various reasons. Perhaps some stuff was deemed too dark, or things that the fans hate is being downplayed, or maybe Paramount just doesn't have faith in this and is slicing it down to a lean length so as not to scare off audiences, etc.
On another note, I have to wonder if Michael Bay has any influence over the runtime. He is the producer after all, and the film is being made under a production company he co-founded. We all know how long his Transformers flicks are, so who knows? Having a 2 and a half hour TMNT flick may very well be possible.

I put as much time as allowed because I love turtles and its a pleasure to see them in the cinema.
Failing that, I hope there will be a lot of extra scenes added to the blu ray when it comes out which lengthens the movie considerably.
I think it will be around the two hour mark, though.

I'm all for character development, but I doubt this movie is going to be as deep as we would like to considering the type of films Liebesman and Bay are involved with. I'm sure we'll get the origin, a small backstory of Splinter and Shredder, and the Foot Clan, but most of it will be about the Turtles staying in the shadows, April almost revealing their existence/identities to the world, the Turtles and April teaming up, plot twists, and very elaborate action/fighting scenes.
Based on that it should be at most two hours; if running time goes beyond that, the movie has to go into substantial character depth, otherwise it will be superfluous action and fighting for a mere popcorn flick.

Agreed, I'd actually be really interested to see any deleted scenes - see what made the cut for the theatrical version and what didn't. Maybe there'd be some good character stuff in the deleted scenes which were cut for pacing reasons or something.

The new trailer only shows 3 things happening, The fight at the Subway, The fight in the Sewers, And the Snow Chase, I'm sure there are more set pieces that they haven't revealed yet, There's gonna be something going during Time Square because of that Tower tumbling over.
With those Set Pieces, The movie has to at least be around 2 hours. There is plenty of time for character development and story between those scenes.

I'm hoping for something in the two hour range. 90 mins just feels rushed for a sci-fi action blockbuster film.
I know the 1990 movie is a bit on the short side, but I always wished it had been longer and they were able to squeeze more stuff into it.
not necessarily more characters, but more character development stuff. How about more time in the sewer before the foot clan raids them? how about more scenes on the farm?
The movie is very Raph-centric, they could have spent more time on Donny for example -- who always gets shortchanged. You never get a sense of his brilliance in the films, they totally just relegate him to supporting mikey's jokes and i hate that.

Transformers: Age of Extinction was not a terrible film by any means, but it was pretty bad, and a lot of what made it bad became increasingly apparent the longer the film went on, making it's runtime it's greatest weakness. The movie bordered on being three hours long. For an action adventure film with little to no plot and thin on character development, that's too god damn long. The Avengers was even shorter than that, though not by much.
This movie should be two hours at maximum. Two and a half or more? Nu-uh. No way.

True...but with the ways the trailers set things up, I'm feeling more optimistic.
Think about it, there's the full Snow Chase scene, Turtle Lair invasion, Underground Hostage fight, Turtle Van scene and the Final Battle with Shredder which really haven't been shown off that much.
There's definitely a lot more of the Turtles we haven't seen and I'm afraid, a LOT more of Megan Fox that we haven't seen, seeing how she's not that much featured in the previews!

doesnt bother me - we've glimpsed those scenes, so I imagine once they are fleshed out, and we see them in context, itll be just the right amount.
on another note - 90 mins? I wouldnt be surprised, considering the sheer amount of work that went into this per the 'Inside the Action' special. and quite honestly, minus a few promo images that came out early on when they were still working on the CG, all the focus has been on the Turtles as of late.

Well Godzilla FELT longer than it was I guess. The plank-wood characters killed all interest for me. More time with them would NOT have helped.
They definitely could have told the story they told in less time though. There's a lot of wasted time in that movie with characters staring at nothing and talking about stuff that was already established earlier.

The pair also said that the film will run just under 100 minutes and promised that we “might even hear” some of the original cartoon’s theme song in some manner. The end credits, too, will offer a “very, very fun song.” Mostly, though, their primary goal is to capture the overall tone of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and deliver it in a manner that will palatable for new audiences.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 = 93 Minutes

It's a little disappointing for me, because it's pretty obvious based on it being about an hour and a half, and how many big action scenes we've seen glimpses of already, that anything that isn't "action" and CGI is going to be glossed over and rushed through like crazy. I kind of like a little bit of decompression in movies - within reason. As far as Godzilla, I wish they'd done a better job handling the humans but I thought for the most part it was fine... I loved the movie but it did feel longer than it really was. I feel it was a good length, maybe could have been a little longer, but they could have used the time a little more efficiently.
I like to really get immersed in the story and appreciate the dramatic "weight" of things. This movie looks like it's gonna be rushed-through. :ohwell:

:ohwell:
Being rushed through is what im affraid of and giving the runtime of the film I think I have to agree with you on this one....

We've already seen so many snippets of much bigger, longer action scenes that you just know are going to take up a huge chunk of time. One of my favorite things in the first TMNT movie - and even the third, honestly - were the "small" moments, the character moments (the second one didn't seem to have many). People/Turtles just... talking, playing off of each other. The first one definitely seems longer than its length, NOT because it dragged, because it didn't, but because they were able to do so much with the time. Action and drama, fighting and character moments.
I'm really concerned that a lot of the "small" moments are going to be left out of this one at the expense of the carnage and "Look what we can do with SFX now". Now, the Turtles' personalities are pretty well intact, from the look of it, but what are they going to do with them, in between the fight scenes? Catchphrases aren't the same as characters.
I'm at an age where SFX and flashiness just bores me. It's all fake. Tell me a story. Give me some real characters and have them interact in a meaningful way. Then, I'll eat your CGI cotton candy after I've had my steak.
We'll see.

TMNT 2007 ending scene was so rushed it felt pretty bleak.

No, Liebesman said that it was just under 100 minutes.
I'm still not sure about that though, think I'm in denial about it, but since everything about this movie has been skewed, this might be the same thing. If it's true, hopefully the pacing is good. I'm leaning more towards 2 hours. I feel that's sufficient for this movie.

No, you're absolutely right. Buy ideally, 2 hours isn't bad. Hour and a half isn't bad either, I just prefer a 2 hour movie. Transformers is too long... way too long.
But hey, if this is true, so be it. I just don't want something rushed or oddly cut that's all. If they get the story to fit in just 100 minutes, I'll be a happy camper.

The Transformers movies come off like they're trying to make the "Lord of the Rings" of Punching Robot movies.
Might actually work if every second that wasn't punching robots wasn't total agony.

Yeah, I normally prefer 2 hours because, there is enough time for some quiet moments, for characters to relax after an action scene, it helps built character development. and it it also helps in the story.

I agree....but my thing is, my head keeps going back to tmnt and how rushed and full of plot holes tmnt was at 80 something minutes. Then I take into account all that has to be covered inthis movie without plot holes.....and it goes.....
the new tmnt orgin
april and her career
vern
eric sacs
shredder and his new orgin
the sense of the family bond that the turtles are supposed to have
the turtles being captured so raph can go solo to rescue them (wich worries me cuz id like to see a movie with equal screen time for all 4 turtles)......
its not that it needs to be 2 hrs its like someone already mentioned.....if they can tell a strong solid story in 87 min with all of that then I will be just as happy then if they had made it two hrs, my fear tho is its a lot to squeez in, in the time given and tmnt 07 is proof of that, or maybe it just had really bad writers....all the same im still excited for this movie its just the time frame seems so limited on the story they can tell, at least from my stand point....

i think you Misunderstand the sigh
Stryker never said Godzilla was a bad movie...actually we both talked about this in another thread...but Godzilla could have Shaved maybe half an hour off of the Human story and not drag on and still be a good movie
for the little amount of Monster battle we get the timeframe kind of hurt it...even as much as i love it i remember sitting int theaters thinking to myself if the movie ever was going to end
it really did drag..the time between action wasn't thought out right....then again TMNT could be the opposite..to much action in a faced paced timeline that doesn't tell the story..it wont look bad but it could hurt the outline of the story and pacing

So far we have this.
TMNT 1990 = 1 Hour 33 Minutes
TMNT 2: The Secret of the Ooze = 1 Hour 28 Minutes
TMNT 3: Turtles in Time = 1 Hour 36 Minutes
TMNT 2007 = 1 Hour 27 Minutes
TMNT 2014 = 1 Hour 50 Minutes
That's a pretty good Runtime for the new film to be honest, There's enough time there for character development and story.
SwiftNinjaFox
07-26-2014, 06:58 PM
Agreed, they have enough time.
Just depends on how much they use well.
Using past Michael Bay films:
Bad Boys was right at 2 hours
Bad Boys 2 was 2 hours 27 minutes
I would argue despite being longer, Bad Boys 2 had a LOT of additional explosions and extended actions scenes beyond necessity.
Meanwhile, I'm a total nut for the extended Lord of the Rings films.
So it's all about the use of time. ;)
TigerClaw

Huh...so still close to the original film's 93 minutes after all, then?
So that puts it back at about the same length of time if the film is under 100 minutes with the rest making up end credits. Because CG heavy films have loooooong end credits.

voltron80
07-30-2014, 10:40 AM
AMC has TMNT listed at 1:41, Step Up All in runs 11 minutes longer.
