View Full Version : As a TMNT fan do you feel compelled to try out and experience every series?

For example I've watched every episode of all 3 cartoons, I've read the majority of Mirage comics, I've read all of Archie, and I'm completely caught up on IDW. I've also seen all the movies and Next Mutation.

Now I obviously know following comics is harder than the cartoons/movies, simply because you have to track down and buy the comics over simply going to your computer or plugging in a DVD.

Do you try to experience everything?

The main thing I like about ninja turtles is the cartoons. I've seen every episode of every cartoon and every movie at least once.

You're right, it's not that easy to get those comics so I haven't gotten into them yet. I'd like to someday though. I do have 2 Archie comics but that's it.

I'm not too crazy about Next Mutation.

I would definitely consider myself more of a comic book fan but I have to give the original cartoon the credit for getting me into the Turtles so with that I always check everything out and have to say, usually I like it. That's the beauty of the Turtles. It's all these different worlds with different takes but still the Turtles in the end. I at least want to give everything a chance.

I mostly watch the cartoons and the movies. It's hard to get into the comics, otherwise I'd certainly get into them.

Well, I am mostly into the Nick series right now. I do wanna check out more of the 1987 show and the Mirage comics at some point, I've just been too lazy. I did look for the Mirage comic books at the library once and I didn't see any.

When I was a newer fan I wanted to experience it all. Now that I've settled into the fandom I'm content with the OT, Nick toon, IDW and Archie comics and the first and fourth movies.

For the most part yes, I've followed the various shows and movies though I need to read more of the comics.

The one exception is when I checked out a few clips from the 2012 show about hearing about it and becoming curious but I wasn't impressed. I'm not a fan of that kind of humor.

If I didn't enjoy the OT and first movie as much, I probably wouldn't be as motivated to give other versions of TMNT a chance since those were the two that made me into a fan of the premise and concept of TMNT in the first place. I would like to give the TMNT comics more of an opportunity in reading them, but collecting all of the issues, micro-series, etc. just to get the full complete content, is too tedious for me for a person who wasn't interested in comics in the first place.

I try, yes. I have endeavored to view every incarnation I can at least to some extent. TNM was too painful to continue past the pilot, but I still gave it a shot.

They release collections of this stuff, you don't have to track down individual issues. IDW is releasing trades of Mirage, Archie and the current IDW series and they're great.

You can catch up on nearly 25 years of TMNT comics by just buying their collections.

Compelled to? Nah. Didn't grow up the comic reading sort of kid so never really got into comics in general. Currently in the process of rewatching the original cartoon on YouTube. Have caught the 2007 movie online and bits of the 2003 series (along with it's associated movie) and might watch more of that series after I've rewatched the rest of the first, but don't really feel compelled to watch 'em.

You should give each show a proper viewing. They're among the best cartoons on television.

What I lack is most of Image and a lot of the Archie series, not red the Dreamwave comic. And haven't finished the manga stuff that are available, But I plan to rectify that. I haven't listened to all of the CootS songs, and I'll probably won't either.

I've watched the movies, the specials, seen all three shows and is current with the fourth Nick toon, the anime, read Mirage on current with IDWs various comics.

There should be an option like, "You watch/read whatever catches your interest" because none of the poll options suit me. I don't feel compelled to read/watch something if it doesn't interest me or draw me in. An example of this is the 2k3 series. I couldn't get into it at all. I also didn't have much interest in the 2k7 movie (but I saw it on TV).

As for the comics, I never got the chance to collect the IDW series. I have an interest and I've read the Archie and Mirage series.

I've seen all of the OT (I grew up with it), TNM (but still don't recall much), and watching Nick's version. I've seen all the movies. I've read Mirage and Archie. That's about it.

I have no desire to see the new movie...no interest.

I have seen all of the OT, the 2K3 cartoon and I'm obviously planning on sticking with the Nick series till the very end, too. I've seen all the movies. I've read the first few issues of the Mirage comics, but nothing else...I should really try to read some more of them. I saw a few episodes of Next Mutation but didn't bother finishing it (did anyone?). I haven't read any of the IDW or Archie comics, but I've heard good things about 'em. Oh, and I'm going to see the new movie, of course.

Generally speaking, I feel committed to see everything TMNT made as possible, however priorities can skew some of this. The TV series is tops as I've seen every episode, followed by the movies, and then the G1 comics since I own most of those. The problem with comics is how slow the stories develop over time, slower than the TV series themselves and I'd rather download/buy/read in binges as opposed to conveniently making a new episode a ritual. Then the other merchandise is based on what I can find, with video games and action figures taking top priority. Finally, if I can't find anything new, I look for fanfiction. That's why I don't have time to feel compelled to other franchises (just the movies for Star Wars, just the cartoons for Transformers, just the video games for Sonic), but there is just something that makes me enjoy TMNT, mostly due to pleasant childhood memories.

Ditto; I want to check out everything - it's just a question of time as I watch a LOT of movies/tv series and read a LOT of books; for every one thing I get through, another ten get added to the pile.

So yeah, at this stage my (shaky) comics knowledge is limited to Mirage and Archie (which I haven't read in a few years) - one day I will get off my butt and edumacate myself re the IDW, as well as re-reading the other comics.

With TV shows and movies, yeah I checked them all out. It's a minimal investment, and I usually like it. I certainly don't feel like I have to follow them all through, if I don't like it. Although, it's only 4kids that I haven't watched all of.

Comics are more work. I love IDW, and keep up with it. I have some Archie comics, but I don't feel compelled to collect them. I read the first 20 or so issues of Mirage, and I don't really dig it. After getting a peek from the 30th Anniversary special, I have the guy at my local shop checking storage this week for Image comics, though. That looks interesting.

I check out pretty much everything. I guess what I've followed the least was the toys; I have a couple from each series except the newest ones, but I never had a ton of the toys. I have most of the comics and just about everything that's on DVD. I plan to have all the comics eventually, I just haven't really picked up for a couple years for financial reasons.

Some stuff I pay attention to more than others, but I check out pretty much everything. It's like with anything else I'm a fan of, like Superman or Batman, I still want to have the bad stuff, just because.

I give most iterations of most canons I like at least a try, and TMNT is no exception. Except for any comics that aren't Mirage. I like Mirage, but western comics are a rare thing for me to like at all, so at the moment I have no interest in trying any of the other comics.

None of the poll options really represent my experience, so I won't vote.

But basically? No. I've seen/experienced most of the TMNT material, but if I don't think I'm going to enjoy something I usually won't bother with it, or I'll give it a quick sample and move on if it doesn't grab me. For me, part of being a fan is knowing very well how the TMNT "work" for me, and if something doesn't jibe with that I feel okay giving it a pass.

Examples: I haven't seen much of the Mutant Turtles: Superman Legend anime, as it was pretty hard to get a hold of when I'd first heard about it and I haven't had much interest since. I also gave The Next Mutation a try back in the day, but I didn't care for it at the time and I haven't bothered trying it again. And I've... thoroughly covered my opinions on how the new movie looks so far, so I'll stop there. :trazz:

In a few cases I've been into a "version" only to a point... the '87 cartoon kind of loses me at a point where I didn't/don't care to keep watching it (around the time the production values got especially cheap and the tone got too soft). And I definitely tuned out on the 2003 series during "Fast Forward" - though I jumped back in with the final "Back to the Sewer" season.

While I may not enjoy some series or eras as much as others, yes I try to at least sample all eras of the TMNT. I by no means think that I am the target audience for every TMNT story or series out there, so I don't get too bent out of shape when one new form pops up that doesn't resonate with me. That just means that incarnation isn't "my version of the turtles," but that's okay and perfectly fine.

The Turtles are different from many other licensed properties and comic series in that they are meant to stand alone and be their own thing. It isn't a like a comic reboot at DC or Marvel where they retool your favorite character like Superman and completely change the tone of the character while still trying to pass him off as the same guy. Instead of getting a retooled or retcon origin, each property stands on its own with its own unique take and origin of the turtles. Sure some of the later versions are closer in line with the original Mirage origins than others, but they still embrace their differences and don't try to pass themselves off as adding new stories to the original turtles mythos.

Heck, in the late 80's through mid 90's, we had 2 very distinct and different versions of the turtles being published at the same time, the Mirage Comic Series (with at least the first movie adapting these stories and tone relatively closely) and the Fred Wolf Cartoon series and it's subsequent Archie Adventure comic series that went in it's own direction but still resembled the cartoon in its general tone direction and look of the turtles.

The Mirage series between Volume 1, Tales volume 1, Volume 2, and specials spanned nearly 90 issues, while the Archie series coming out at the same time with all of its specials and tie-ins was some where around 100 comic issues plus nearly 200 episodes of the cartoon. I can't think of any other properties that ran that long and had 2 different comic series with such different and distinct feels co-existing at the same time. That speaks volumes on how truly special the TMNT property is.

Now here in 2014, we're going to have an IDW on-going series, a Nick Cartoon series with subsequent comic tie-in, and a New Live Action movie, all with different origin stories and their own unique take and feel on the turtles. There truly is something for everyone, and while not each take is going to be my favorite, I try to at least sample and do my best to enjoy each variety.

While Next Mutation is the only real miss in the Turtles 30 year history for me, I do understand that is someone's first exposure to the property and their favorite, and while it may not be my cup of tea, I'm glad that it served as the gateway to the larger TMNTverse for those fans who now almost 20 years later are still sticking around and enjoying the franchise as much as everyone else who came in via some other Turtle avenue. I hope the new movie and cartoon bring in enough fans to keep TMNT popular enough to celebrate a 60th Anniversay.

you can't make an informed decision on whether you like something or not without at least sampling it and criticisms are just sh!t-talk if you haven't given something a chance.

Honestly Next Mutation should be watched at least once just for laughs. The series is only 26 episdoes so it wouldn't take long to plow through. It's just a case to how TMNT can go "horribly wrong." lol.

As for the Image series, since IDW will probably reprint them around next year it should be easier to get.

Yep, we sure do. Although it makes you realize that its a good thing that despite TMNT being around for 30 years, we've had very few truly horrible incarnations.

We have 3 good cartoons, the majority of Mirage, Archie and IDW is good, and most of the original movies were good. Sure, the cartoons do have their share of bad episodes from time to time, and there are some individual comics that were awful, but overall we fare pretty well.

TMNT hasn't had many bombs. I guess we're lucky in that regard.

None of those options apply to me. I'm only really into the Mirage/Image books, enjoy the Archies for what they are, and I'm willing to give anything else a chance that isn't dogsh*t... it's just pretty rare that there's anything but that, with TMNT.

If they never, ever made another horrible TMNT movie or another children's cartoon TMNT I would be perfectly happy with that.

I don't know about compelled but I do check most of it out to see if interests me.

If does get my interest (Mirage, IDW, 4Kids, Nickelodeon) I keep to it for as long as it keeps my interest.

If it does not (Fred Wolf, Next Mutation) I ignore most of it when I don't see much good in it or any improvement.

I watched it all in a row. Including the 2 power rangers appearances. I like it. it's a nice alternative to the normal thing. It was the first real change to the series excluding the move from comic books to tv. So of course it was going to greeted with some restraint everyone's more accepting now. The hate is way overblown.

I've seen every episode the 4Kids and Nick shows, but I've only seen season one of the Fred Wolf show, and I'm not interested in seeing more of it. I've seen the first movie, Secret of the Ooze, and TMNT, but not the third one. I will see the new one, but I don't plan on watching the third one. I own the first one on DVD, and I rewatch it every once in a while, but that'll probably be the only one I ever own. I caught Secret of the Ooze on TV a while back, and it was bad. I read IDW regularly, and I plan on getting the Ultimate Collection, and the collected Tales Volume 1, but I'm not very interested in Archie, due to my disdain its main source material. I will definitely never watch The Next Mutation, and I hope Nickelodeon only acknowledges it for the purpose of not repeating similar mistakes.

Oh they will, no matter how much the popularity plummets there will always be someone wanting to bring it back in some form because if it made much money enough times before it may very well do so again.

Superman, Batman, Flash Gordon, Fantastic 4, Robocop, Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Pirates of the Carribean, Star Trek, He-Man, Voltron etc, are all examples of no matter how critically panned, no matter how long it's been out of the larger cultural spotlight and not even how big of a bomb it has had, someone out there is always willing to give it another shot.

I didn't vote as none of the options really apply to me. I do feel compelled to find out about the existence of every incarnation as I want to know what's out there, but if any of it doesn't appeal to me for whatever reason then I won't bother watching/reading it. I like the diversity with the turtles in the sense that there's something for everyone to pick and choose from. My TMNT world consists of the 3 cartoons including Turtles Forever, Mirage and IDW comics, and a couple of the movies (plus great anticipation for the new one) and I'm happy with just that. I also have an interest in collecting the figures too.

Once upon a time, yes. Even with huge disparities between versions, it was always interesting to check out with the idea that the Mirage team was somewhere behind the wheel (sometimes very far behind, but that still made it something to see even if the quality was nowhere to be found).

Since the Nickelodeon sale, no. The Nick cartoon is great for what it is, but I'm not the intended audience. And I've been super-duper lukewarm on the IDW book. Not sure I'll even see the new movie in theaters. There's usually enough to remind me of what I enjoy about the property, but I'm going to judge each version based on whether or not I'd be interested in it if it didn't involve the Turtles.

I've been open to most things except the comics. I'm just not a comic book reader. Now, if the Turtles had streams of actual novels out like Harry Potter or Star Wars does, then I'd be more than happy to pluck down 100,000 or more to acquire them.

And I have yet to watch Next Mutation. And, I probably never will.

I've seen all of the 4Kids cartoon, about a third of the 80's one, and am currently keeping up with the Nick series. I've watched all the movies and plan on seeing the new one, but probably later as I don't watch films at the theatre. I expect to eventually try the Next Mutation as well. As for comics, I started reading the IDW run a little while ago and quite enjoy it. I might check out the other comics in the future, or at least Image anyway. I'd say I at least give everything TMNT a shot if the media is readily available to me, but it's more due to casual interest than a compelling need.

I check in with both sporadically. I'm a couple trades behind on IDW at this point. With Nick it's usually a case of my going, "Huh. Haven't checked that in a month. What's been happening?" and I'll do a few episodes.

I've been thinking about that a lot lately. I at least want to have a handle on all incarnations. The only things I haven't touched on more than a little is the manga, comic strips and Archie.
