View Full Version : TMNT Marketing Skewed?

I've noticed that the new movie seems to be getting much more attention from programs and magazines geared toward adults than kids, all the clips and plugs I've seen have been on shows like Access Hollywood or Dish Nation(which had Robbie Rist as a guest today discussing Megan Fox's childhood crush on his character!) , TMZ, or in Cosmo and other adult-read magazines. Others have commented that Nick hasn't shown trailers for it, and I've seen only ONE trailer in the theater. (Sadly, I missed all but the last trailer before T4, so I don't know if it had one here.)
Do you think the marketing has skewed toward adults over kids for this movie? It seems like they have been putting more emphasis on things like Megan's role, Whoopie being cast, and other side-issues rather than the actual subject of the movie itself.

No there is no flat out lying
...different regions air different commercial blocks style all the time...some NICK channels in some areas may not be showing them and some may be...personally in my area ive seen NO tmnt trailers outside the web no matter the channel
yet tons of Apes,Transformers,GOTG and now Lucy
and as i said in my thread this isnt me being a hater or whiney fan boy, or not a true fan...marketing seems to vary by region
in fact the only marketing ive seen locally is one pizza hut window decal of raphs sai with the poppers

not true...regions are different commercial style all the time...some NICK channels in some areas may not be showing them and some may be...personally in my area ive seen NO tmnt trailers outside the web no matter the channel

But to say that Nick hasn't shown ANY trailers is false...just because you haven't seen them doesn't mean the station isn't airing them

Obviously, if y don't see them in your area, that means Nick isn't airing them in that area. It's pretty simple. And it's not one or two people saying this, but SEVERAL. In different areas. So it appears that Nick hasn't been airing them in a large part of their viewership's regions. That's really odd for what is probably considered a "kids' movie" by most. My question is whether anyone thinks this means it may be being marketed more for adults.

I'm in the southeast & I haven't seen any trailers on Nick (or any other channel for that matter, but I admit I don't watch that much TV). Still, you'd think it's a given they'd air it during TMNT, but no dice on my side of the states. Weird.

Dude, I'm in South Carolina too! Funny coincidence. Do you have Time Warner cable, as I do? But like I said, when I'm watching, I don't see anything. Maybe it's bad timing.
& where in SC are you, if you don't mind my asking? I'm in Lexington. Originally from NY, though.

Could just be that many simply haven't been as lucky as you to catch it on Nick, eh?
Doesn't make people liars if in their experience - or area - it doesn't seem to be happening... I mean I've personally seen zilch. Guess you live in Luckyland.

Yeah, I'm thinking so prob... I mean I've got Comcast and my service comes out of Philly, that one should be a no brainer. :\
A 1 min trailer is listed available on demand from Comcast, but that's all I've come across.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I swear I can't turn on Nick and NOT see a TMNT Movie trailer...I'd turn to Nick now but I'm waiting on Big Brother to come on!

As for the topic at hand, it's gotta be the provider, man. A lot of the time they have different sponsors & whatnot. Makes sense to me.
Too bad I'm missing out. It'd be neat to see a TMNT trailer on the boobtube.

I think it's a waste to play TV spots so early before a film, especially if the film doesn't have the hugest marketing budget.
They'll start pushing more ads in front of popular kid/teen programming more and more as we hit mid- to late-july (especially the later.)

No, but when the OP said that Nick isn't airing them...they are. Just because you aren't seeing it in your area doesn't mean that Nick isn't airing the trailers. That's the point I was trying to get across

Actually, I didn't say they WEREN'T, just that many people haven't seen them at all, and neither have I. I don't even get Nick, as I don't have cable or satellite, but I haven't seen it on any of the regular channels, either, and we have seen tons of the T4, Guardians, and Apes ones here. Others in my own area have said the same, so I have to assume that the providers here aren't airing it on Nick or other channels.
And if you're not seeing it, doesn't that pretty much mean it's NOT being aired? They SHOULD be showing it during the cartoon at least, but so far, it appears that nearly all of the media coverage has been on entertainment news shows in this area, and little else.

Why aren't you recording all this stuff you're seeing and getting it online? :P

Why would you not expect this to be marketed towards adults? This doesn't look like anymore like a kids movie than Transformers or Guardians of the Galaxy. This is a comic book property. Just because they have a cartoon based on the property that's for kids doesn't mean that the next time someone makes a movie based on the property, it's automatically going to be for kids.
PG-13 comic book movies have been the standard for 15 years. This movie would be the odd duck if it were PG, or targeted towards children.
EDIT:
I also haven't seen any promos on Nickelodeon. But I only watch the channel for half an hour a week.

My coworker just said today that he's seen almost NOTHING promoting TMNT anywhere. Not on TV, no billboards, no magazines, nothing anywhere.
Yet when he was in California for 3 days....EVERYWHERE. Full wall posters, billboards, everything.

Ok.. so lazed around a bit this morning/afternoon and had Nick on for about 2 1/2 hours.
Some are seeing the actual trailers on there? A flipped around through all three different Nick channels I have (excluding Nick Jr) during their simultaneous commercial breaks, not a single Turtles trailer to be seen.
Just before their 12:30 shows came on, before I had to give up to go get other things done, I DID see one very short Turtles related thing on one of the Nick channels, whatever it was... a guy supposedly with three kids "in the lair" challenged to find a skateboard, a mocap suit, and I think answer a trivia question. Very quick and wasn't worth a whole lot in terms of actually selling it to an audience. That was the only damn thing I saw on my broadcast... :\
What I did see a lot of... Nick's commercials for itself, McDonald's, plenty of cereal commercials, several commercials for the Rio 2 DVD, go figure, Earth to Echo and Planes 2 trailers two or three times, a few toy commercials (non-Turtles), and other sporadic stuff thrown in (Nationwide Insurance, ABCmouse, etc).
I dunno... the Turtles trailers so far have not really offered any firm feeling to suggest "this is kid friendly," and with it still sitting at "not yet rated," maybe my cable provider isn't sure it's appropriate?

The only time I see any snipped of the trailer on TV, is when it's being promoted by Pizza Hut. Now, I am seeing tons of Apes, Lucy and GOTG trailers. And even GOTG Chris Pratt is going to be on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, and he is seen with a baby raccoon, but the only thing I've seen with TMNT is Cosmopolitan and it has Megan Fox on it. And just her.
