View Full Version : William Fichtner Not Playing Shredder

According to Paramount and producer Andrew Form, William Fichtner is not playing Shredder. He’s playing Eric Sachs, who works for Shredder, but Shredder, who will be wearing a mechanized samurai suit in the film, is an entirely different character. There is some evidence to back this up – in the most recent trailer, Fichtner says to a shadowy figure, “We’re taking your armor to the next level.” It should be noted, however, that Fichtner himself told the press last year that he was playing Shredder, so perhaps there’s more to this story.
So no more "white washed" Shredder, or whatever the hell some people ranted before. :D

Man, I don't know what in the world is going on with this movie. I bet at some point Sachs was supposed to be the Shredder, but they changed it.
At least they wised up.

Can you stow the attitude, please? "William Fichtner is the Shredder" is exactly how it was presented to the general public by the actor himself, and the studio didn't correct it. The name Eric Sachs is even specifically an American sound-alike of Oroku Saki. People had every reason to take these details at face value, so the "nyah nyah, told you so" routine is uncalled for.
That said, it remains to be seen how this will pan out. "Sachs is the Shredder" could have been misdirection in the first place, or what the producer said here could be the misdirection as far as we know. No way to know for sure at this point.

He may not be the original Shredder in this but there's no way he doesn't end up wearing the Shredder armor by the end of the film. I still wish we were getting an adaptation closer to Mirage but it's not necessarily a bad idea.

I don't think it's "fool" that is the right word
If an actor is saying he or she is playing a character you do trust what they say and not automatically connect it to being a ruse
Do not lie, you yourself thought this was the case too, at least before that "armor to next level" trailer

If anyone watched Spectacular Spider-man, they did the same thing with Green Goblin. Even though everyone knows Norman Osborn is the Green Goblin the show will really convince you that it was Harry under the mask. Maybe they were trying to pull the same thing but didn't expect that the TMNT fans don't want to be played so they start showing hints of Oroku Saki or maybe they just changed it altogether. They probably learned their lesson now: No twist, No surprises = No fanboy rage( or maybe not, should have been no noses too, am I right?)
People need to chill. It's those that were fooled that are offended I reckon.
People would be chill if you didn't antagonize them in the first place. You say stuff like "whatever the hell some people ranted before" and people are gonna get defensive. Don't shoot snark at people if you don't want them shooting back.
And it's not being "fooled" if you take information officially presented to you at face value. I get that sometimes the powers that be have to lie to keep a surprise, but you can't act like folks are unreasonable for reporting on and responding to that official information for what it is. They gave them the exact information they intended to.
Here's a hypothetical, though: what if the producer's comments were a red herring and Fichtner either is or becomes the Shredder in the movie? Because that's totally possible.

My are you insufferable. People were offended Fichtner was playing the Shredder because the Shredder is usually [but not always] Oroku Saki, who is Japanese, and it's disrespectful to strip a character of minority status; the whitewashing declaration was further supported by the name Eric Sachs, which as mentioned upthread, is very much a sound-alike name. This isn't difficult to understand. All of this is on topic, you just need to stop being a baby. Or stop baiting. Pick one.
That said, it sounds like if Fichtner really isn't playing the Shredder, this was another last-second change to the film, which is only going to hurt it when we're this close to release. I might just have to go see it myself and laugh at the inevitable plot holes a change like this is going to cause.

I find it funny, how "stoked" persons try to shoulder the blame on everyone else, but PD for this misinformation. Pathetic.
i really don't think marketing had anything at all to do with this specific sitch. i think what happened was that fichtner said that because maybe it was true at the time. But, due to the cluster-eff that this movie has sort of been all along, i also suspect that maybe all the backlash, really freaked some of the film-makers out and some of the creative choices they originally went with were changed in scurry and flurry of trying to save what the internet was saying was jacked up.
some of the stuff has been tweaked a little...the brothers faces, the script, etc...but considering there were reshoots that suspiciously seem were done to insert oroku saki as shredder, it's obvious not all the back treading and re-figuring stuff worked out as smoothly as they'd hoped.
at least not to the internet.
i wouldn't be at all surprised if this is the film-makers whiting out and re-doing what was originally intended. it certainly seems the non-coinciding stories about who fichtner is playing is a direct result of that.
i just hope that even with all the mix ups, hiccups, do-overs and whatnot that it doesn't end up being an incoherent mess.
(cue everyone saying it's too late to hope for that... :trolleye: )

We know that Sachs -- at some point -- is the Shredder. We also know that over the course of the movie "the Shredder goes through a lot of changes." Perhaps it's Saki, and then it's Sachs, and then it turns out he's had an Utrom named Krang in his belly the whole time.
And we also know that Fichtner has a 3 picture deal.
The Boston Ninja Turtle

so now this makes me wonder..those 3 films Fichtner was signed on for..is that still happening
if he was never meant to be the shredder why sign him on for 3?
will he die at the end of the movie or in the middle?
is he being bought out now?
is this another case of Splinter and Leo Recast under the actors reptilian noses?
seriously is not one Behind the scenes person asking these questions..i don't mean to be a jerk but this just leads to a big mess in the end
this is why movies need to not rush and make sure they are actually making a movie they want, with every scenario written down just incase something happens..and even if fan boys rage who cares stick to your plan..sure i am on the leery side but i am more disappointed that this studio is back tracking than moving forward

Oh really? I guess OT Baxter Stockman is super racist then. :trolleye:
That's a silly point of view to take. I really don't care what ethnicity a character is. The problem is that Shredder's origin pretty much requires him to be Japanese, since he's a ninja and a member of a ninja clan (the Foot). When people realized Shredder was gonna be a white guy, they flipped out not because the ethnicity changed, but because it seemed like the origin story itself was going to radically be altered as well.

We seen this kind of thing happen with other movies, When Star Trek Into Darkness was being made, Lots of people thought that Benedict Cumberbatch was playing Khan, And then they said hes playing another character. The movie comes out and he plays this other character who then, Turns out to actually be Khan in the end.
So for this TMNT movie, They were throwing people off by saying that William Fichtner is playing the Shredder, When in the actual movie, Its somebody else.

Samxsteal had a good point, though. The last thing Bay wanted to do was offend people by changing Shredder's ethnicity - looks like that happened anyway, though. I'm sure the idea of Fichtner being Shredder wasn't a racist one; it was just something Bay wanted to change to make his version stand out. It was still a stupid idea, though. It's almost like making Black Panther a white guy.
:ohwell:
Okay, maybe it's racist. I'm not aware of why they made the change, or if they even had a reason, so that was a pretty lame example of mine.
Well, you definitely had a point in that Saki/Shredder being Japanese is an essential part of his character and identity, while Baxter being black isn't necessarily (or at least not in the same way)... But it still raises issues of representation, as there are an absolute ton of white male characters in comics and media, and comparatively very few characters of colour - especially ones that aren't based on some manner of negative stereotype. That's the best possible reason for Baxter to be, and stay, a black man.
Basically, if you're taking a character of colour and turning them into a white dude... that's basically always a terrible idea.

No. IDW wasn't looking at anything or privy to anything in the Paramount camp, and the script and production was already very well into full throttle by the time the IDW books started coming out. Neither was there ever at any time any Paramount executives sitting in IDW's creative summits.
If there's anything in the movie that is definitively IDW, it could only be incidentally.
I'm sure that's what they want you to think.
Think about it: Fichtner reveals he's going to be Shredder; everyone gets all angry and rages about it on the internet. Then reshoots happen, and suddenly Fichtner isn't Shredder at all!
I'm very certain reshoots were done to accommodate changes to the script, and maybe also because Fox was pregnant.
The only changes to the script happened when Paramount shut down production for a couple of month way back when... long before talk of reshoots. Which weren't even considerable.

So yes it is possible
He indicated what's come before... IDW did not come before. It's going on... now. And again, there was no way for Paramount to even be looking at any IDW comics at the times the "big" decisions were being made in the production and shooting script.

The news is still bad, because it means we're going to see little to nothing of Oroku Saki in the film because Eric Sachs will still be the main focused on villain for the majority of it.
I bet we won't see Saki till the very last act of the film, where he suddenly reveals he's Shredder.
So why waste our time with a crusty 60 year old white man for the majority of the film? I don't think he's going to be Krang either for that matter.

So for this TMNT movie, They were throwing people off by saying that William Fichtner is playing the Shredder, When in the actual movie, Its somebody else.
He could be just some dude whose providing the tech behind the suit, Who knows, He could be working with Baxter Stockman behind the technology. As for how April's father is involved, I bet hes similar to the Kirby from the Nick TMNT series.
Exactly I still say Baxter is in this movie and Sach Is just an Utrom Help baxter and Shredder
And while i disagree Because DONE in a correct way Having a "white shredder" could work Ala Storm shadow/ Snake Eyes
No. IDW wasn't looking at anything or privy to anything in the Paramount camp, and the script and production was already very well into full throttle by the time the IDW books started coming out. Neither was there ever at any time any Paramount executives sitting in IDW's creative summits. I still haven't seen anything about them supposedly "Removing themselves" from the Movie, Except certain artist who did not like the first trailer but are starting to warm up to it. As For No it wasn't the script rewrite happen well after the Series had already started and been in the market, Its not a leap that If Kevin was Brought in and worked with the director and screen writer he could not use aspect from IDW in which he was also a major part of.
If there's anything in the movie that is definitively IDW, it could only be incidentally. This is not true No matter how much you say it and while saying for sure 100% that this has IDW influences is Assumption so is this Fact is There is still a vary large Possibility that This Could and in fact seems to have influences from IDW
The only changes to the script happened when Paramount shut down production for a couple of month way back when... long before talk of reshoots. Which weren't even considerable. Its shut down For nearly a year After Johnathan and Even were brought in The same time Kevin has said to sat down with them all and Give them Insight and work with them on the movie
He indicated what's come before... IDW did not come before. It's going on... now. And again, there was no way for Paramount to even be looking at any IDW comics at the times the "big" decisions were being made in the production and shooting script.
IDW does come before its happened and had started and released Several Issues Since the rewrites started

No one finds it odd that we don't know the actor that is supposedly playing Shredder 3 weeks from release?
That right there should tell you Sachs becomes Shredder eventually and is the main villain.
Not really There are still Tons of character un credited and Unconfirmed yet Its not unusual to see an actor in a movie Uncredit till release and even after Channing Tatum Was in THis is the end Uncredited he was still in the movie.

Um, it would be very unusual (actually it would be unheard of) for a role the size of The Shredder to be uncredited or unconfirmed at this point. There is no chance one of the trades wouldn't have scooped this if someone else was Shredder/main villain. There will be a token Asian Shredder before Sachs takes over.

Yes, we've seen Sachs talk to someone who is probably Saki (although still unconfirmed). My point is that if this shadowy figure was the one and only Shredder in this movie then we'd know who he is. The Shredder is the main bad guy yet we don't know who is playing him? It's just a small role and Sachs ends up being Shredder / main villain in this.

There is alot to this movie yet to be seen. There are lots of things in encyclopedias, including outmoded anthropological terms coined during a time of great western colonial expansion. If any terms were going to be racist, it would be the three "races" as defined by early western anthropologists.
I mean...just by definition.
As for the suffix -oid, from the Greek -oeidēs which means resemblance. Humanoid means resembling human.
The TMNT are humanoid turtles.

I was not using them to mean one is better then the other on as a means I was spouted as a racist for saying black So i found the Scientific term for each race i was using in reference Not to be racist but to use the least subjective term i thought at the time Guess i was wrong
I wasn't meaning any harm in any of what i was saying just that If people were just people regardless it would not matter race of the character who played what ever character, really it should be Anyone can play anyone.

The context in which the words were coined and used WAS racist, and when you use them in ignorance of that context you leave yourself open to being counted among that context, and called out on it.
You might not be racist, but the words you resurrected to make your anti-racist point are steeped in racism. Heck, they were made to codify and reinforce supremacy of third over the other two.

He wouldn't be named "Erik Sachs" unless he becomes Shredder at some point. Oroku Saki probably gets killed in that explosion on the rooftop, and then Sachs becomes Shredder at the end of the movie. Make no mistake, Sachs IS the main villain in this. Saki will basically be the Darth Maul of the movie, while Sachs will be the Emperor. It wouldn't surprise me if Sachs turns out to be Krang as well.

Honestly the identity of the Shredder shouldn't even be a surprise or a mystery. It something that should be a given. If they have punking us all along then they only have themselves to blame for meltdowns.
Then again it's possible this is all a double bluff and that it really is Sachs in the armor. It seems even one of this movies biggest boosters and one that usually says we should believe everything they say seems to think Sachs will wear the armor.
Under normal circumstances something like this might actually make me stop and think "hmm maybe this movie wont be complete crap after all" but they've deceived us so many times I'm not taking for granted anything. For all we know that bald guy is not Oroku Saki but Mr Braunze.

Yeah, fans excited to anything can do amazing things now since the internet has been available. I remember just a quick shot of Scarlet and Chris on set for The Winter Soldier, and someone blew up the scene and discovered she was wearing a necklace with an arrow in it, presumably a present from Hawkeye.

I don't think Bay's aware enough of racial issues to have even considered the implications of a white Shredder.
Either way... I'm over the whole Shredder/Fichtner/is he isn't he thing at this stage. I don't understand what the point was of lying to us... it's just made me lose interest in this particular aspect of the movie altogether. Lying to us hasn't done us any favors, IMO - it's just annoyed a whole heap of people unnecessarily. I don't expect them to flat-out say what they're doing, but as I said - I don't like being lied to and treated like an ambulatory dollar sign who'll just swallow whatever I'm told and be grateful for it.

I totally understand why studios want to hide things and surprise people, but I'm never in favor of flat-out lying about it. I'm never a fan of flat-out lying about anything, actually. "Twists" are tricky business in movies, because once the cat's out of the bag, if people don't like it you kill your own buzz with bad word of mouth. I've said it a million times, an expensive "tent pole" film that's meant to build a franchise is the absolute last place you want to take any risks or risk pissing anyone off, and that's all they've been trying to do since day one. It's asinine. If screwing with people made money, Vince Russo would be a billionaire and TNA might actually draw an audience of paying customers.
People, by and large, don't like surprises. Yes, there are those who do, so don't all of you who do like surprises jump in with "I do! I do!" Science says, you're the minority, and that people like what they like and prefer the familiar. It's like getting gifts; apparently, about 8 or 9 times out of 10, people who receive a surprise gift would prefer to have the cash equivalent so they could just get something they actually wanted. They appreciate the effort, but they're still disappointed, because what they got wasn't *exactly* what they wanted.
Every TMNT fan knows who the bad guy is supposed to be. Why the shenanigans? I'll tell you why: It's because whenever Hollywood gets their hands on a well-known property, the FIRST thing they ask isn't "How do we do this right?" or "How do we keep the fans happy?" it's "What can we Change?" Because for some reason, they think people won't go see a movie when they already know the details or the ending. Never mind how much money "Passion of the Christ" made; I mean, I doubt anyone at all expected Jesus to pull a swerve, hop down off the cross and karate kick everyone into oblivion. But the fact remains, "Swerves" are what Hollywood relies on to build these licensed films, and I hate that. It's so short-sighted. "Saw" wasn't a good movie because of the twist ending, it was good because it was original at the time, more cerebral than gory, AND it had a twist ending. So, when it comes time to do the 75 Saw sequels, what does Hollywood recycle over and over again? The Twist, reaching further and further each time until literally every character you ever saw in the entire franchise was working for the killer at some point.
Why they feel the need to "trick" or "surprise" us, I'll never know. You know what surprises me? When these hacks get their heads out of their asses long enough to do anything competent, like "Batman Begins" (with its own pointless, laughable, "Liam Neeson Is NOT Playing Ra's, He Just Coincidentally Has That Very Specific Facial Hair Which No One Except Ra's Has" tacked-on "Twist"). Just do a good movie and quit winking at us the whole time. You're NOT smarter than the material OR the audience.
Like others, I'm also very suspicious about the re-shoots having something to do with the Sachs/Shredder backlash. I know, "conspiracy theory". Still seems very plausible to me, all they'd need to change is a few CGI scenes and some dialog. It makes sense that they'd scramble and lie to cover themselves, like when they said the TMNT were aliens, then said they never said that. It's just like that. The TMNT WERE aliens, until people bitched about it, then they "fixed" it. I'd bet Sachs WAS Shredder, until people bitched, then they "fixed" it.
Whether he is or isn't Shredder, though, there's no reason to lie about it. That's just dickish.
