I hate every kid/teen/senior that "show" pulls. It's just clickbait where they use the most annoying cast to keep people coming a'la the old "it's like watching a car accident" bit.

I don't really care too much if they don't like the old stuff, cartoons back then were not the same style and energy level that they are now, a lot of old cartoons (though not really the Turtles as much) feel so slow now next to the hyperactivity of newer cartoons...
However I'd prefer that kids were at least aware that the Turtles are as old as they are and while we're perfectly happy to share them (with them and everyone in between) the generation of former kids they were born to as beloved characters has rightful claims.
If you know how I mean. Like in the same sense that other superhero sorts most deeply 'belong' to the generations that first knew and loved them, in both a childhood sense and cultural history.
I appreciate the one little girl who seems to think that she SHOULD know this history already, like she's surprised that she doesn't.

Educated in what? Can't force kids to watch something you did and expect them to like it. I was forced to watch the great Citizen Kane when I was 14, and still think the movie is stupid. I get it, Wells changed the way movies were filmed, doesn't mean the movie itself is fantastic.

I have...and he seems to "tolerate" the Turtles. He's more into Batman and the Hulk so far....but then again he's only 2.
BUT.....if you push too hard to make them "like what we like" they may very well NOT like it. Rebelion and what not. Trey plays with my 2k3 Turtles, but so far he's really too young to know what he thinks.

Well it was a mixed response for the 80s show and the current one, almost split down the middle boys liking it and girls not so much. That may not be so surprising to some but I've always thought that TMNT had more female fans than other properties of its kind.
It's somewhat troubling that none liked the trailer for upcoming movie and they are arguably the movies prime demographic.
One thing thing that bothers me is in most time media brings up the previous live action movies they use images of TMNT 3. Are screen caps of that movie so much easier to find? I often think think they are trying to make a point.

The 80s tmnt was made for kids. Of the 80s.
No one is gonna like turtles that don't even fight and every other character is throwing out a bad pun or one-liner. Not nowadays. Even Batman tas is too slow paced and 'not cool enough' for kids nowadays.
People want fast paced action with bad ass heroes, actual threatening villains and modern references and memes and stuff. Or stuff like Adventure Time.

There were 3 kids that said it was better or more detailed than the original. That counts as something!
Btw, they chose the WORST costumes and trailer to show for the kids. I know the new Film is aimed towards kids but that first trailer definitely wasn't, hence why we see the lighter tone in the newer TV Spots and such.

Yeah I'm mostly leaning towards to the thought that this movie might be absolutely terrible, especially with an run time of 98 minutes. But I just love the designs because it so much different from the previous versions of tmnt.

For the same reason that we should respect the opinion of the creators of an official forum, except their rules would actually make sense. Rule #6 here is just ridiculous. It's biased and it's narrow-minded. The 80s show is far from perfect, it is not the "definitive" turtles show like rule #6 suggests, but we still love it. I think the majority of us here do, right? But we should still be allowed to critique it. If people were punished for bashing the 80s show then these forums would see a lot less traffic.
Also, this is basically the forum for turtle fans. So it basically is an official forum. The rules should reflect that, not one dude's opinion.
glad someone agrees with me

That seems like a pretty silly rule. We're not allowed to have opinions now? There's a way to criticize stuff without coming across as bashing or offensive. I like the OT, but I don't feel it should get a pass from being criticized.
For instance, saying the show sucked doesn't come across as bashing (I would choose my words more carefully, though), but it would help if said person expressed why he/she feels that way. Give constructive criticism.

I'll give you that one, for sure. If someone were to continuously criticise the 80s show without stating why they don't like it and then chastise other people for liking it, then something should be done about it. But no opinions on the show at all other than it is good? That's just absurd.

I dunno about these kids, but my niece is in love with the turtles. All versions she sees. And without prompting.
Her birthday is today, but yesterday Stryker and I drove up (2 hours) to see her and take her to pick out presents.
Except for one Sonic doll, it was all TMNT. She picked out the Leonardo mini pillow pet, the Leonardo new movie mask and weapon set (which she wore for the rest of the day) a tshirt with the old toon turtles (she wanted the shirt with the new movie turtles but we couldn't find a small enough one) some of the new movie dog tags, and a squishy little Donatello. We let her go free in Toys R Us and that is what she picked. At 5.
Then she hovered around the movie toys and New Movie lego sets. The kid is sold. She can tell you all the names, villans, weapons, colors, everything. Loves the new toon, old movies, and toys. And I don't go home that often. She loves it all on her own. Cause God knows my brother and his wife hate TMNT.

That rule is outdated. That was mostly because when the 2k3 show was new all the new fans started bashing the hell out of the 80s version whenever someone liked it better than the 2k3 one. Now we have a third series and a failtastic movie coming soon, it's not just A or B anymore.
That rule is dead by now. If not it should be. Luckily I'm a huge fan of the 80s show and have no real reason to just bash it without reason. But if I wasn't then if leave such a forum that ban me for having an opinion.

07-20-2014, 09:08 PM
The fact that about half of these kids didn't know about the 2014 movie, or a few confused the OT with the Nick series reveals how poorly the Nick promotional team is handling the TMNT franchise. I think if the Fine Bros would have actually showed the OT episodes, it would have been much more accurate assessment rather than letting kids make an opinion on a minute-long intro alone.
I don't mind criticisms of the OT, but the petulant "it sucks so bad" statement over and over again (with minimal to no explanation) is so adolescent cliche because whichever version they prefer is so preferably "badass". Okay, we get it. You like your Turtles very serious, there's nothing wrong with that, but why are you wasting time wanting such seriousness in a show that had 80s censorship and Turtles designed for an audience of children nonetheless? Get over it already.

My daughter loves the turtles in all of their different versions, from the different tv series, movies and comic books. I'm more shocked/appalled that these kids (as well as the interviewer it would appear) seem to be completely unaware of the 2k3 series. Some of the older kids would've been the same age when the latter seasons of 2k3 were airing as the younger kids that were interviewed who were aware of the Nick Cartoon. That's a bit of a bummer that those kids never were aware that show was on when they were growing up. I'm also curious as to when the was shot, most of them seemed unaware that the new movie was coming out, confirming my suspicious, I hope it was a while back that they shot this and not just within the last couple of weeks.

Most kids and newer generations won't like older stuff that much. This applies to everything, from cartoons to music. There's always exceptions, though. I grew up in the late 90s/early 00s and loved the FW series back then when reruns aired here. Also liked The Flinstones, Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry a lot. And I grew up playing NES and SNES games thanks to my older brother. But I'm sure I'm in the minority. You'd be surprised how many people my age(I'm 23) don't have any interest in watching movies from the 60s or the 50s because "ew old movies".

Where the hell did you learn math? 2014-2003 = 11 not 14. :trolleye:
11 years ago 2003 STARTED, and it ran until 2009 (2014-2009 = 5 years ago)
If you look at my comment I say that the older kids would have been old enough to see the later seasons. Some of those kids were 12-14 years old. (14 - 5 = 9. 12-5 = 7) Therefore those older kids would have been around the same age back when 2k3 Series was finishing up, as the younger kids are currently that were familiar with the Nick Series.

Yeah, that happens a lot. It's really up to them later on once they've "matured" to work backwards and seek out what came before, and decide if they actually like it or not.
I like a lot of old movies, music, TV shows, etc. but I went through a phase where I avoided on purpose anything that was "too old" compared to what I was into at the time. Takes a while to grow out of the idea that "newer is better", but we all go through that. Especially once we see for ourselves how untrue that is.

It's so obviously scripted and lame.

I'm more shocked/appalled that these kids (as well as the interviewer it would appear) seem to be completely unaware of the 2k3 series.
They did use a picture from the 2K3 series at the bottom next to some backstory of the franchise.
The 2k3 series aired 14 years ago.
14 years? Where did you pull that number from? Dimension X? The 2K3 series aired 11 years ago, in 2003. That's what "2K3" means.

I hate being late to threads and posting mid-conversation my own thoughts on what the OP says. I dunno, it's just... consistency. Egh, never mind.
1. You expect them to form an opinion by showing them the THEME SONG? Why not show them an actual episode of the show? Granted, it would take longer, but you don't have to show us, just let us know that they watched it.
2. You could've showed them the 2007 CGI TMNT or the 1st movie TMNT, you know, the ones that didn't look like CRAP? (Heck, the 2nd movie TMNT would've been acceptable). You showed the one version of the TMNT that looked ugly as hell?
3. And the missed opportunities keep coming. Why not show them the 2003 cartoon? Seeing as how kids react better to animation and what's on to screen than writing, the 2003 toon has faster, more upbeat animation and slick fight scenes.
Only good thing I can say is that Dylan kid is pretty cool. He knows what he's talking about.
All I can say is, show 'em Animaniacs.

Well, from a young age I've learnt that age regarding music/tv shows/games/movies isn't an indicator of their quality. That being said, I have trouble enjoying Atari 2600 games. Old movies? Don't have trouble enjoying them. it's all about understanding the context of their period/era. It's easier to find a dated game than a dated movie anyway.
Back in the mid-2000s, shows such as Seinfeld, the A-Team, MacGuyver, Moonlightning, Roots, Star trek(original and New Gen) Alf, etc. were rerun on cable here. So plenty of people of my generation who were either too young or not born at the time to enjoy them had a chance to check 'em out. I ended up liking Alf and loving Seinfeld a lot. Also had a lot of fun watching Macguyver and Star Trek with my grandmother(yes my grandmother liked Star trek).

I don't see what's so bad about 80-s cartoon. I am not "purist" who think it desegrated comic book version or whatever strange crap.
I enjoy it for what it is - comedy action cartoon for kids of the 80-s. And that's it. Of course, maybe action comedy of the 80-s kids show is not to everyone lkiking, but calling it "horrible" or something, is kind of pushing it. I am not sure what kind of problems those people have with the show. What the heck are they expecting from it?

I did feel a bit sorry for the 4Kids show not being included in that, hate to think that is lumbered in with Next Mutation as something to ignore in the mainstream culture. I'd love to have seen the kids react to Venus, would have guranteed interesting reactions
And yeah, Michael Bay hate from a kid is probably all they were really aiming for with this one...
Those kids are actor-hopefuls who are hired for these videos, they're not real kids, they're paid to overreact. As far as the reactions it kind of makes sense, as far as the OT being required viewing? Maybe if they become part of the fandom and love the turtles, for casual fans? Cybercubed if you're like that as a parent you'd be no different than those parents that force sports to their kids just because of their own selfish reasons. A great written cartoon in the 80s is not a great written cartoon now. We have higher quality writing overall, without nostalgia or seeing things "for their time" they wouldn't be interesting today. Sure some shows can be genuinely good but they have to discover it on their own, you can't force it on them. I'm not sure I would've liked the original King Kong if my parents had forced me to watch it as a kid, but I found it appealing and watched it and saw that it held up. As a kid when I saw re-runs of shows from the 80s "great" shows from the 80s and I disliked them compared to their current counterparts. Unless you build an equivalent of a Chinese wall your son won't want to consume old media when he has shiny new media to consume and his peers are talking about and what he sees on the stores. Hell part of what made turtlemania was that it was everywhere, the magic cannot be relived through DVDs, you were there or you weren't. It's just silly to think that your son would have to play through Super Mario Bros on the NES when all his friends are playing Halo 20 or a new HD Mario for the new Virtual Reality Nintendo machine.
The 4kids show is generally not well known because the nerds were too old for the show and the kids who grew up with it are just not old enough to have an influence on the internet yet. The fact that it aired in a dying network doesn't help things. But it'll definitely be remembered more and more fondly. Right now we live in the era of 90s nostalgia, but give it a few years and it'll be 00's nostalgia, just like it was 80s nostalgia when I was a teenager that I didn't care for. Of course the 2k3 show never had the impact that the OT had so it won't be remembered as fondly as we the late 80s/early 90s crew does the OT.

It's not really been that long to inspire nostalgia in that many people and is kinda the middle child of the franchise for now.
That being said it seems very influential. I don't buy for a second that Leo and Karai and Don and April pairing in the Nickelodeon show weren't inspired by the 4kids show. Even if they didn't watch it I'm sure they were aware of of those aspects.
It also is a clear influence on the movie. Even without the Foot symbol Shredder looks like a version from the the '03 show and even the idea of the turtles are bigger would come from that show, a lot of the early promo art had those designs looking particularly bulked up. Even some of the justifications for some of their deviations from the mythology like there being a line of Shredders seem to be taken from some minor precedence set in the series.
Sadly they've taken superficial elements but it's there.

Their parents are, not themselves. That's what I'm saying. It's illegal to pay children of that age. Just enjoy the show for what it is. Looking at it as something that's manufactured and fake and that the kids themselves are earning money from it and nothing more is cynical.

adding to this people need to remember that the shows we grow up on were written for just that..us to grow up on....in another 30 years when this board is all the kids who grew up on the 2k12 show and a new series comes on..those newbies will come on and say "ugh the 2k12 show was crap" but in some weird alien language
look at sesame street from the 70s to now..the style and pacing of the show has changed to accommodate the kids of the respective generation at the time . if SS had stayed the same format since the 70s it wouldve been canceled years ago, but even in the 80s and 90s it was all vastly different, remember we live in a time of fast paced, gogo, ipod ipads constant stimulation....and shows have to compete with that

You know, I think they picked the OT series as opposed to the 2k3 series because there's the possibility that they've been exposed to it in some way and also probably because it is still recent. It's an action packed series, still somewhat serious in comparison to the OT. The tone of the 2k12 series is closer to the OT than the 2k3 series as well, so that could have a little to do with it too. As far as getting into older video games goes, my wife has still never beaten any Mario game, and I've made it perfectly clear that I'm never going to fully respect her until she does.I have a confession to make, I've never beaten Super Mario Bros 3 on the NES because of how long it was. The SNES was no prob with the save states, but didn't care for the changes of the kings of some if the worlds, like the one king who was changed into a Yoshi.cough cough...i am Spanish..cough coughYou know, there are three languages I've always wanted to learn fluently....Spanish, Japanese, and if it counts, ASL.
I studied Spanish in school, but my listening was poor since I couldn't practice it much. Studied for 5 years. I can still read it and understand most of it, but speaking forget it.
Studied ASL for two years.
In Japan now, but I'm forgetting a lot of Japanese still because I'm surrounded by English the majority of the time.

I'ved watched several Kids React videos, and although they have been somewhat refined, they make a good representation about the 21st century generation views classic topics, from technology to movies to music to all sorts of things. I'm sure if there was a kids react in 1992 comparing the current Batman back then to the Adam West era, I'm sure there would be a similar reaction. This story even made the front page of Google News when I checked this morning. I guess though that with more kids voting no as opposed to yes based on their reaction to the OT, its a sign that Nickelodeon is doing a good job providing the series for a new generation, and this is simply based on the great theme song/animation for its time without getting into detail of a single episode! I shared an OT episode with a five-year old nephew and he felt similar in that it was pretty cool in a "vintage" way, but not to the point of feeling the pull that the Nick series does. I'm actually surprised at how smart the kids took on the movie verse, showing the '90s movies as too costumey and the current series as a bit too mature for their age level. I highly recommend the Kids React series.

I hate every kid/teen/senior that "show" pulls. It's just clickbait where they use the most annoying cast to keep people coming a'la the old "it's like watching a car accident" bit.
For reals. They did an episode on the original Game Boy and none of those kids seemed to have the slightest idea about how to turn the thing on. That had to have been staged.
