Was that Splinter talking or no?
I'm not a big fan of them being mystical creatures or some big destiny plot or anything like that. So I hope that isn't whats gonna happen

TC - ya beat me too it. I just saw it a few minutes ago.

Honestly I was a bit concerned watching this because the mythos they were drawing from seemed to harken back to the 'demon' ancestry of the TMNT III film.

But the narrator did say:

One generation passed the legend on to the next

So, SPLINTER may have used the legend as a bedtime story for the Turtles, and not much else.

Did the NARRATOR sound like Tony Shaloub to anyone else?

a section of the website reads:

Long before the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles captured the hearts of people around the world, there were the Kappa Yokai, mythical creatures summoned by the spirits of honour, wisdom, courage and brotherhood. The Legend of the Yokai is an exhibition of global artists, featuring pieces inspired by these principles and the four heroes that embody them.

They may just be using the 'LEGEND OF YOKAI' as a jump off point for further promotion, as it the Turtles' story draws similarities to Japanese historical mythos.

Which seems to make sense in a way.

And Splinter was probably telling this mythological story to the Kid Turtles.

honestly, im somewhat concerned because they are harkening back to Japanese mythology, with creatures resembling a race of turtles, it'll spur the old arguments again...but it is, what it is.

I LOVED the art style, and I really enjoy the artwork on the website.

A quote on the homepage reads:

An exhibition that explores the mythical origins of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

If nothing else, its just a showcase of Turtle inspired artwork, never a bad thing.

And to think, a few weeks ago, I was complaining about their lack of presence in marketing. Things like this dont happen overnight, its clearly been in the works for a while.

This is one of the rare things I like from TMNT III, very cool coincidence that there are creatures in Japanese mythology resemble the TMNT. I would bet Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman had no idea of that.

Although I like stories where it's just a random thing that happened and nothing else, it is nice to tie it back to something sometimes. It gives a warmer feeling than a sort of nihilistic one

I think this is definitely something that splinter tells the boys to show them their significance, that they have an important role in the world. It would also be a missed opportunity not to use this as part of the mythology.

I really like how much effort has been put into this, and the turtles themselves.

so excited to see this film!

Yeah that might happen. Not sure if he will be telling it to them as more of a fictitious folk story with a life lesson, or if the movie will have supernatural type stuff like the IDW series.

But Splinter might just refer to shredder as a demon so the little kid turtles know that he's a bad, bad man lol

Posted this in the marketing, but figure this is where discussion would seem more appropriate:

So that explains the scroll we've seen on Sachs' wall. It's the legend of the yokai, I'm betting.

And so now, in modern times, the science-created "Yokai" are the TMNT and the legend is repeated in the modern times.

Still has a little too much destiny/fate aspects to it for my liking, but that's Hollywood's big fascination lately.

I will note, however, that we clearly see Shredder in that legend and he's supported by "demons" or yokai themselves. Just a little trivia...kitsune are a type of yokai as well. More loose ties to IDW, but I don't expect a feudal Japan Saki in the film and the angle for Hamato Yoshi and his sons doesn't seem to be there here, so don't take me as suggesting that. Just purely noting IDW's Kitsune is a yokai supporting Shredder in the past, similar to the demons supporting what is clearly Shredder visually in this legend.

That's cool, but weren't kappas the demons that drowned people and sucked the intestines from their butts? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kappa_(folklore))

One lesser evil over another, I guess.

Yeah, they sucks your soul out of your butt, hence the Nick name anus-vampires.

They also eat children.

I think the Oroku Saki in the movie is a descendant of the Shredder looking guy in that legend. Why else would he kind of dress like him in modern times?

I would say it's possible the armor is an heirloom passed down through the generations of the Foot Clan and, as you said, Saki is the current head of said clan descended from the Shredder of legend. So rather than "kind of dress like him" he literally is dressing in the armor, only being modified and improved through modern technology.

I'm so happy they're including the Japanese supernatural in this movie, even if it's just a story Splinter tells to his boys <3 I smiled when I saw the kappa shown with their little "bowls" of water on their heads and hair. I'm glad they didn't just make them look exactly like the turtles because they're not how the kappa have been portrayed.

Of course, they left out the part about the shirikodama...thankfully ^_^

Yes Hollywood I get it, 4 qualities you can argue the TMNT each represent you are so clever. Not sure that wisdom and courage are the words I would use for (presumably) Donatello and Raphael though. Intelligence and (hardheaded, stupid) Bravery might fit better.

Kind of a big middle finger to Japanese folk tales & ancient culture though, as Kappa were definitely not creatures of honor & all that jazz. They'd lure you into the swamps and suck your intestines out through your asshole. Hence them being feared & referred to as DEMONS.

Galactus hit it on the nose. Like any species, kappa aren't necessarily all evil. Tengu, kappa, kitsune, tanuki, even oni... there's tales of them being altruistic, heroic, or just... "normal" in demeanor. To say kappa weren't honorable, to boot, is actually patently wrong. They would actually DIE for their honor, even the bad ones (they were forced to bow if you bowed, which would make them pour the water out from their head cavity, killing them)

Ghost-ish yokai/bakemono actually were more "evil" by nature on the whole(as in demonic/spiritual beings that were once human), but even then, it's not an absolute.

I can't say I've heard that side of the story, but as a fellow weeb I will take your word on it. I don't think it's wrong to say they've been depicted as evil more often than good, though.

I believe Kappa's have been predominately depicted as jerks more then evil, but its doesn't go without saying they can't be semi good...um kappa's. I've read the story about the kappa's bowing and such, but I know unlike kitsune theres largely more stories of them being jerks. So its easier to think their nothing but evil demons.

If this really intertwines into the movie in some way or another, then my interests have really jumped again. Although it does give off some vibes of the IDW series I am really digging this aspect more then anything else I've seen come out of this movie.

Stories about kappa differ depending on who's telling them. Yes, kappa have traditionally been depicted as "morally ambiguous," if we're to use the Western term, but so have all Yokai, including the kitsune and tengu. Modern day adaptation of kappa range from cute water sprites to aggressive brutes. Once again, it depends on the story. I see no problem with this movie showcasing the kappa as more honorable; if anything, the gray nature of the Japanese supernatural realm provides an abundance of room for creativity.

"Kappa are also known as ravishers of women. An 18th-century ukiyo-e image by Utamaro depicts kappa raping an ama diver underwater. In his Tōno Monogatari, Kunio Yanagita records a number of beliefs from the Tōno area about women being accosted and even impregnated by kappa.[20] Their offspring were said to be repulsive to behold, and were generally buried."

But if you want to argue as you seem to want to do other wise you could have left my harmless comment go. Kappa are much more layered in myth and lore then Ass muching rapist, Just like any lore/myth isn't only whats on a short Wiki page, SMH, I doubt you even new the extent of a Kappa until Other poster mention "ass munching" and you felt the need to blow something out of proportion. Kappa is just an excuse to loosely based a fake Japanese myth on turtles for the story they are trying to tell ALA 2k3 Tangu shredder Or 2k12s shredders helmet, IDW or plenty of other tmnt aspects, And they presented it Very well, with a unique story, and Shows that Japanese ties have an will be in the movie at great extent.

Absolutely zero of that was exaggerated in any way. Not one word.

Cartoons. Politics. Religion. George Bush. Iraq War. Gay Ninja Turtles. Jim Lawson. April being a drawing. 9/11 conspiracies. Faking the Moon Landing. Any and every f*cking thing. This place got so bad, they had to go all "Pat Garrett" and have Grunger Kittie become a Mod and reign in some of the chaos, and he was almost as bad an influence as *I* am. Before he cut his hair and sold out.

F*cking daily anarchy. It only sounds terrible. If you were quick of wit, or just a huge asshole to people, you got by. In some ways it was fun. I don't exactly miss it, but oh man, the laughs. Some people got so bent they'd "Quit" while making long, dramatic, "emo" speeches, before coming back an hour later because they just couldn't resist reading the comments. People got so personal with their arguments. It wasn't exactly funny, but oh man, this pace got dark sometimes. But it definitely tempered a lot of the people who stuck around.

I was also drunk a lot more back then, which explains a ton. Like, every day.

Well, not all Kappa are bad, they are notorious tricksters, which can range from farting loudly in public to peek under women's kimono and drowning people.

But their biggest feature is that they are excellent swimmers, and even today certain rivers have warning signs that kappa is living there. Also the saying "even the best makes mistakes" there is one regarding the Kappa: "even a kappa can drown"

Their also very honorable creature, so a trick to fend off a vicious kappa is to bow, cause they have to bow even lower then you spilling out the water in the bowl they have on their head, making them powerless. It's never wise to take a kappa head on as they are very strong despite being cild sized and love Sumo fighting.

But, the kappa also loves human flesh, particularly children. And they eat your soul (a glowing orb which name escapes me) through your anus. A tradition in feudal Japan was to write your newborn child's name on a cucumber and throw it in the river to the kappa, as a pact to not eat the child. The Kappa loves cucumber more then human flesh.

The Kappa comes in many variations, some with the face of a monkey, others have beaks, some walk on two legs some on all four, I think even there is one without a turtle shell. and there is hairy kappa, like a wookie variant, which have their own name but I can't recall it.

Man, after looking up stories behind Kappa Yokai legends adding this to the movie kinda seems cool and could easily fit into this world they are trying to make. The art in the video is beautiful too. They might not even mention it in the film, but I like it and can totally see it being this Eric Sachs characters obsession and a way for the turtles to be mutated (though I'd rather it have been a chance accident, but at this point it is what it is!)

At this point though, I don't really want to spoil any more for myself in the next 2 weeks, good or bad, I want some of this movie to be fresh for the first time.

But i totally agree It all about perspective and this Screams TMNT to me Look at 2k3, TMNT III, IDW Nick They all "make" there own Japanese mythos. Not my job to be a perfect Linguist
It's not about being perfect linguist. It's about respect to the people who read your posts. If you type like ****, then it means you do not respect your readers. Plain and simple.

My English is far from perfect, but at least I am trying to become better with it and respect some of the basic rules. Like Typing WithouT Capitalizing Random Words and using commas and dots to spearate sentences in different parts which make it easier to understand them

Once again, it's not about being specialist in the language, it's about simple respect to the readers, which does not require much on your part. If you choose to not follow such basics - it's quite telling about you and your personality.

I really don't think adding Kappa to the back story is a positive. I wasn't a fan of the reincarnation aspect of IDW, and I don't like this "everything happens for a reason" storyline. I don't think it makes the turtles "more japanese" or "ties it to Japan" or whatever the hell people are saying. The idea is weak sauce.

I agreed with most of the second half of your statement, especially bc I hated the ties they made to Japanese mythos in TMNT III. Somehow it made the turtles existence seem less special to me by adding 'those that came before them' type thing.

BUT, your wolverine example doesn't work bc, the turtles aren't eating ramen claiming to have Japanese roots just because. The mythos grounds their existence in the roots of Japanese culture. To me it's very different than just trying to tack it on.

Good point, I was trying to think of a better analogy. I failed, lol.
In any-case, that's how I see it. To me it feels like a step away from the turtles mutation being a "special" event, to, "it's happened before". Furthermore, its a re-hash of blue door, meaning it's opening up the possibility of more mutant turtles.

Funny enough, this whole destiny vs accident argument reminds me of TMNT II SOTO, when Donnie was complaining on the rooftop to everyone that there had to be more to their existence, and it was clear that he was distraught at the thought of being just an accident.

BUT, that is a very natural and important thought to have as a sentient individual.
Doesn't mean you'll like the answer.

Most heros have a "destiny". It's the Joseph Campbell myth over and over ad nauseum. Everything has a purpose, everyone has a place, and the hero will triumph, even though he/she doesn't believe it's possible.

I prefer the alternate. **** happens. I hate the "I'm the only one who can stop this!"
That's both juvenile, and solipsistic. How about, "somebody do something" and the person who DOES, proves to be the hero.

I prefer this method of storytelling, as it challenges the writer to come up with a good reason for the protagonist to be involved, or to take action.
Destiny is lazy, and from what I've read, not very "Mirage", well, not Very Peter Laird.

Laird always kept things grey. No one was every really all good, or all evil..every character was a shade of grey, and for my money, that's a far more compelling idea.

No....no they are not. Some are good, some are bad:

Behavior [edit]
Kappa are usually seen as mischievous troublemakers or trickster figures. Their pranks range from the relatively innocent, such as loudly passing gas or looking up women's kimonos, to the malevolent, such as drowning people and animals, kidnapping children, and raping women.[14]

Kappa are not entirely antagonistic to humankind, however. They are curious of human civilization, and they can understand and speak Japanese. They may even befriend human beings in exchange for gifts and offerings such as nasu (茄子, "Japanese eggplant"), soba (そば or 蕎麦, “buckwheat noodles”) nattō (なっとう or 納豆, "fermented soybeans"), or kabocha (カボチャ, 南瓜, “winter squash”), but especially cucumbers, the only food kappa are known to enjoy more than human children.

Once befriended, kappa have been known to perform any number of tasks for human beings, such as helping farmers irrigate their land. Sometimes, they will bring the occasional gift of fresh fish, which is regarded as a mark of good fortune for the family that receives it.[3] They are also highly knowledgeable of medicine, and legend states that they taught the art of bone setting to humankind.[14][22][23] Due to these benevolent aspects, some shrines are dedicated to the worship of particularly helpful kappa.[24] There were also festivals meant to placate the kappa in hopes of receiving a good harvest, some of which still take place today. These festivals generally took place during the two equinoxes of the year when the kappa traveled from the rivers to the mountains and vice versa.[3] Kappa may also be tricked into helping people. Their deep sense of decorum will not allow them to break an oath, for example; so if a human being can dupe a kappa into promising to help him, the kappa has no choice but to follow through.

The kappa thing is an interesting idea but I'm not really sure what to make of it. I just can't see where it fits. I suppose it could just be a story splinter made up to inspire the turtles in their future battles with shredder but It would be a pretty big red herring if that's the case. Not to mention it could be seen as a superficial way to create a tie to japan and I don't see that going over well at all. If it does have anything to do with the story then it brings up so many questions. Liebsman talked about the old origin being complicated but I don't see any way you connect the tmnt to supernatural creatures of japanese folklore simply.

The kappa thing is an interesting idea but I'm not really sure what to make of it. I just can't see where it fits. I suppose it could just be a story splinter made up to inspire the turtles in their future battles with shredder but It would be a pretty big red herring if that's the case. Agreed. I can see it working alright as a story Splinter made up for his sons, but the scroll art makes me think it's meant to connect to the scroll in the background of the "that's what we were trying to do, create heroes" scene from the first trailer, which would suggest that the ooze experiments were actually intended to create modern Kappa. If that's the case, it's going to take such an awkward messing around with both the Kappa mythos and TMNT origin in order to make it work, it's going to be a really weird and stupid departure. I'm going to be extremely unhappy if that turns out to be the case.

I wonder if a farting contest counts??

I wouldn't suggest a farting contest cause they probably just use that as a chance to take your butt energy.

I'm really liking all the links to Japan this movie has. It might not be enough for some people, but even at this point it's more than I had dared to hope for. This animation is great and I hope it does appear in the film.

Does anyone think they are gonna show an extended version of this clip during the movie...perhaps while Splinter is explaining the legend to the young turtles?

A break in the live action portion, cut away to animation type thing, like they've done in KILL BILL, and HARRY POTTER?

Exactly what I was thinking. I really liked the animated clips in both those films. If it is in I doubt it'll be any longer than what we've already seen, but you never know. Hope it's there though.

...and in the end everyone are reincarnations!! :o

Or could it be that Turtles instead being part of the alien race, now part of the Kappa race (whatever it is)?

It's stupid anyway...:tcry:

What kappa as a race that descend from mutant turtles but had change over thousands of year of evolution?
