Goodness... as good of a nose for this stuff as the animated Tiger Claw has for sniffing out Turtles!

That said... Well, I hope the music collectively has a large variety. I like those parts that... forget what those segments are called, the parts that repeat... I kinda like those bits, though not typically my kind of music as a whole.

I believe they also refer to it as the 'hook' (music industry slang).

Not bad at all.

i think we heard two different songs, if not, I respectfully disagree  but then again, the original rap song paired with the 90s films was just as cheesy as this, but personally I thought this song was lyrically weak. put someone like Common or Mos Def, and I'd proudly listen to this in my car WITH the windows down.

I'm not actually a fan of rap/hip-hop normally, but I've always found it to perfectly suit TMNT. The 1990 film's hip-hop soundtrack added so much to the tone and atmosphere of the movie. This is the kind of stuff kids their age would listen to, so it makes all the more sense.

I like Juicy, don't like Wiz, never heard the other guy. It's an okay song on a whole, but that's more in terms of "it could be worse" rather than "I would listen to this". While I do like JJ, he & his ilk aren't really a fit for the turtles, to me. Neither is this kind of rap, to me, anyway. For me the TMNT will always be synonymous with real, old-school, street oriented hip-hop, the kinda ish that makes you nearly break your neck from boppin' your head too hard. House Of Pain, Cypress Hill, that funky stuff. Wu-tang Clan would be much better. I understand their "need" to modernize, though... but on that note I remember Kid Cudi teasing his involvement some years back, so I wonder if he's still contributed some tunes. He's much better suited to the property than these fellas, I think. He's got a more teenage/artsy edge, I think. At any rate, I'm just glad they didn't try to grab the kind of artists who repeat the same trap-house nursery rhyme garbage over & over & sound as if they have no personality/education. Juicy's got a lot of swagger & credibility, & Wiz is at least "hip" without being compleeeetely ignorant.

It has amazingly horrible lyrics, but it's supposed to. Totally in the same vein as the other Turtle raps. Wiz Khalifa was a great choice… cheesy enough to do this sort of thing, but still a decent enough rapper to make a catchy song. I love it. Well done TMNT movie, well done!

Leo656
07-21-2014, 09:32 PM
I generally am not much into rap, but I will enthusiastically fist-bump Powder for mentioning House Of Pain, and would see even the worst TMNT movie 5 f*cking times if there was a fight scene set to "Shamrocks N Shenanigans/Boom Shalock-Lock-Boom Remix". Yessir Yes I would.

"I kicks tha flava, like Stephen King writes horror..." (cue the sirens)

07-22-2014, 12:24 AM
I think the song sounds ok - it's not as good as Turtle Power but it's catchy and something you can bop your head to; I think it'll fit the tone of the movie.

I'll flat-out admit that I know frack-all about hip hop or rap. I'd like to get into some female hip hop or rap at some point, but I really just wouldn't know where to start - the little bit of rapcore that I've tried wasn't really to my taste. I'm quite sure that there's some kickass stuff out there, but everything I pick up just seems to be some dude trying to sound like a badass, rapping about ho's and money and drugs and f*ggots... which isn't my kind of thing.

So the sum extent of my "rap tracks I like" is LL Cool J's track from Deep Blue See and the stuff that's on the Blade soundtracks.

Leo656
07-22-2014, 12:34 AM
Yeah, I used to ride to work with these suburban white kids that were such huge f*cking rap posers, ALL they'd do all day every day was blast f*cking G-Unit and D12, and holy sh*t, did that get old quick. There was a ton of other stuff, too, but those are the only ones I remember. There's only so many songs about selling crack and shooting people in the face set to a thumping beat and the repeating sound of shotgun blasts that I can handle before it all starts to run together.

These kids were so into it, and listening to them talk, these way upper-middle class, polo-shirt wearing, gel-haired little puss-wads, as "gangsta" as they got was, "Yo, my mom ain't home, let's go sniff a couple bags of dope and make some macaroni and cheese."

I much prefer the 70s and 80s and even early-90s stuff. Although if I don't listen to "Baby I Got Yo' Money" by Ol' Dirty Bastard every few days, I lose ALL my super-powers. I f*cking need that song the way strippers need abusive relationships.

Tell me about it - my nemesister is the dictionary definition of white suburban rap poser. It's a miracle that I'm even open to the idea of listening to rap after growing up cheek-by-jowl with a self-professed Juggalo (or whatever the female equivalent is). NYGH.

Leo656
07-22-2014, 02:22 AM
Hey now, True Juggalos ain't about thuggin' an' buggin'. Funny story, turns out ICP is all about how they're super-down with "Jesus El Salvador." They do a butt-load of stuff for kids and charities. It's the posers you gotta worry about. They can't listen past the mayhem and see the real message.

I was as shocked as anyone to find out ICP has a message. Especially a positive one. I got there way late, but I'm kinda into them now. They're funny.

The film is an action-comedy like the first live-action TMNT flicks, so it should go without saying that you won't get that... Hip-hop/rap with cheesy lyrics is what you should expect in a TMNT movie's credits.

That said, the song isn't my cup of tea either, but I'm not in to rap in general, so I'll keep my trap shut.

I agree with you guys 100%. I wish they would've gotten somebody whose more lyrical and clever with their wordplay. I hate when rappers lean too hard on materialism or misogyny and I hear a lot of the former in this and a little bit of the latter. I was through when I heard the part near the end about passing a girl off because he's a team player. Imo its pretty weak as a modern day turtles rap but I did kind of like the hook though.

That's just setting yourself up for disappointment if you ask me maybe not this specific movie but I wouldn't count it out as something that couldn't happen in the future. I think there are guys out there who'd like to do a more serious (for lack of a better word) take on it if given the chance. we'd probably be getting a batman begins like tmnt right now if Viacom hadn't vetoed the script for being "too dark"

Yeah, some people actually want more than a "stupid-fun" TMNT movie. You guys are getting what you want, great. And one day, you may get worn out on a billion of those kinds of movies, too, regardless of what they're based on, and say, "Y'know, it'd be nice if, for once, this franchise wasn't just a punchline or a toy commercial." Why is that so hard for some of you to believe?

Batman movies get to run the spectrum between goofy to serious, while TMNT movies only ever get to be juvenile, despite the fact that there's a lot of room to do at least a more balanced take, even if it wasn't 100% serious. One day, someone most likely will do a more "Dark Knight"-style version of TMNT, and based on what I've read here, I sincerely look forward to having a nice quiet theater to enjoy it in, since none of you will be there.

I'm happy for you guys, really. You're getting exactly the movie you want, but some people are getting the exact opposite, whether it's visuals or tone or music or whatever. And you can't blame 'em for saying, "What about us?" Your way isn't the ONLY way to do this franchise, just so we're all clear.

Thanks buddy. I just... y'know, every other thing I love, I have a version of to suit my mood. If I want "kiddie" Superman, I can watch Super-Friends or the Filmation show. If I want "dark, grown-up" Superman, I can watch "Man of Steel". Same thing with Batman, Young Justice/Teen Titans, even Ghostbusters, kinda. Yet whenever anyone does a mass-market TMNT, they insist on shoveling the kids' stuff down my throat. And that's fine, when I'm in the mood for that! But sometimes I like it darker. I don't really like the Mirage books, but I would like a little more drama and pathos in my TMNT stuff now and then, and not have that be limited to comics or cartoons. So, I'm just screwed, I guess?

This has nothing at all to do with the music itself, as I've never been totally for or against anything from the other soundtracks, either. But since people keep insisting that *anything* more dark or somber or orchestral has no place in anything TMNT, I'm gonna go ahead and say yeah, that's not true at all. It wouldn't fit this movie, clearly, and that's fine. For now. One day, maybe movie fans will get a little more variety in their Turtles, just like they have with everything else.

Don't know who exactly this is directed at but I personally want more than a 'stupid-fun' TMNT Movie and it looks like I'm getting that with this movie. There's already a balance between comedy, action and drama I'm seeing that was not present in any other Turtles movie and the fact that it's self-aware makes it much smarter than anything we had in the past. That's what makes the Nickelodeon series great, it doesn't go overboard but knows how to pace it's episodes accordingly.

Even if the designs look crap to some people, I doubt anyone can argue that the visuals and CGI look amazingly detailed which once again makes me happy because it's the kind of treatment I expect from the Ninja Turtles. Plus, their personalities are captured perfectly from what we've seen and that makes these characters fully realised and fun.

I'm the kind of person that puts characters first, story second because I wouldn't care for the story if I didn't care about the characters first. The focus on the turtles is much appreciated especially knowing that Michael Bay is involved!

I never wanted the turtles to 'become punch-lines' like you said but I don't want them to become Shakespearean characters either. I'm just happy that this movie has a balance and that's more than I can say for any other Live-action TMNT Movie or Michael Bay Movies!

Plus, there's definitely not enough room for the Turtles to be treated on the same level as 'The Dark Knight'. As long as the title remains Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, that concept is too finely veiled at this point!

I agree with you. I'm really excited to see this movie and I'll be seeing it premiere night and in 3d later, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with everything everyone is so easily taking. Why can't TMNT have something that's dark, dramatic and not just catered to a lighter audience? I would like a mainstream, dark version for once, but I'll just keep hoping.

Not an Academy Award winning movie here.

Funnily enough, juicy j did actually win an Oscar for the hustle and flow soundtrack.

Not saying any of that Oscar magic is gonna rub off on this flick, but it is nice to be able to say that there's a least one person who worked on this flick in some capacity that has an Oscar, heh.

Honestly, I'm not surprised by the quality or lack thereof. Lemme put on my hip-hop head hat on real quick...

The beat isnt bad. I mean, Its not great, but for what's supposed to be a big mass market promo song the production is better than it coulda been. I don't listen to wiz, but he's huge with my 13 year old nephew, so I guess I can see the merit of putting him on here with his reach to that demographic. Ty is pretty new and i haven't got to check out any of his stuff, but honestly, he seems like this weeks hypebeast that'll be relegated to featuring on b-level rappers songs after a minute.

Juicys got the most cred, but its not like he's Lupe fiasco or kid cudi, who as others have mentioned has a style that's much more in line with the spirit of the franchise (for lack of better wording).

I get the legacy that the franchise has had a result of having tie ins with hip hop songs in the past, and I was expecting something like this already, but wasn't sure what wed actually get.

Is it bad?
Meh.
Is it a missed opportunity?
Maybe.
Is it gonna ruin the movie?
Naaaah.

But still...coulda been better.

My goodness, that Shell Shocked song is beyond terrible. Seems to fit well with the majority of what I've seen from this movie.

Wiz' verse was weak, but it was a fun little song.

What ever happened to Kid Cudi though? Wasn't he supposed to be involved in this movie somehow?

I agree with you that a tmnt movie should be fun but stupid fun, naw. I think the green guys deserve better than that.I'm not asking for shakespearean levels of drama either just something that takes itself somewhat seriously instead of being tounge in cheek and poking fun at the very idea of the premise. Even the original didn't pull that crap and now its 30 years later. We're well past the point where anyone should be expecting to get a giggle out of how silly the title sounds its 2014 people got over that along time ago. On that note I find it frustrating we're 30 years in and to the public at large the turtles are still considered as being JUST for kids. Meanwhile every other comic book character in existence is right in the middle of an entertainment renaissance where everyone and their grandmother sees them as acceptable entertain ment for adults. And what's the difference between those characters and the tmnt.nothing except at some point in their history some creative person decided to present them to the mainstream public in a more mature light.

Amen. It is possible for a movie to be fun without being brainless. There is a comfortable middle ground.

Why can't we have both. The story in itself is pretty important particularly the origin it's their motivation, the how and why they do what they do.

I'd argue it's pretty important to the general public as much as to fans otherwise the cgi flick wouldn't get as much criticism as it does because that certainly "nailed" as did TMNT 3 which also gets lambasted.

I also wouldn't be so quick trust they've gotten the characters right in the upcoming either. Yes, the standard personalities are there but from it looks like they are somewhat overblown.

I'm not really seeing a balance though. There's a scenes at night but all of it seems wall to wall funny. Even the action seems distracted constant one liners and funny moments.

Really? I'd easily put Return to New York with The Dark Knight Returns, City At War with Daredevil's Born Again.

The surface of most comic book heroes sounds ridiculous. Batman was criticized as "clowned up Shadow" when he was created and that's exactly what was even before the comedic and camp eras.

Man jumps from rooftops dressed as bat or man seeks justice after the murder of his parents as a symbol.

Talking turtles learn ninjitsu and fight crime or inhuman creatures trained as ninjas seek to avenge a fallen family member.

You make it as silly and as serious as you want and anywhere in between. It's looks like Platinum Dunes has made the juvenile version yet.

I never said we can't have both, I'm just saying the characters should be more carefully developed than the story in something like TMNT.

In terms of the fight scenes, I've seen two where they're cracking jokes (Lair Battle and Snow Chase) and two where they're completely serious (Underground hostage battle and the final battle with Shredder) so that seems pretty balanced to me.

I'd argue both TMNT 2007 and definitely Turtles 3 did not capture the Turtles at all. We had one version where they're expressing deep emotions and analysing them (Yeah, VERY teenager-like...) nearly every scene with somehow little character development and then we have the other version where all the Turtles act the exact same stupid way.

The fact that you compared something like Return to New York to The Dark Knight Returns says it all.

What leads you to believe the characters have been carefully developed in this movie. If anything it looks like the characters are overblown. Certainly from a visual standpoint they look like caricatures what with Don's taped up glasses and his high pitched "they got guns" it doesn't look like there's any room for any shade of grey.

In terms of the fight scenes, I've seen two where they're cracking jokes (Lair Battle and Snow Chase) and two where they're completely serious (Underground hostage battle and the final battle with Shredder) so that seems pretty balanced to me.

At least the trailer version of the subway station battle has had them whooping and cheering and certainly "I'm a snappin' turtle fool" in the raid on the lair sounds like it's par of the course with that scene.

We've barely seen any of the rooftop battle with Shredder so I wouldn't rule out any jokes and it looks like the elevator scene is right before which doesn't look like they are approaching this scene with any sense of drama.

Also the over-the-top action itself is comical and completely undermines any seriousness to me and deflecting bullets with swords and super strong pogo that can flip cars pretty much takes away sense of seriousness out of the equation for me. I wouldn't mind a bit of that but not in every action, I'd argue it takes away any wow factor.

In both movies all the turtles acted like their set characters. Putting aside that it was open to interpretation whether the turtles in the Imagi movie were still teenagers I'd self analyzing is VERY teenage like. Teenagers are very self absorbed, for most teens first crushes are always "the one", you have a beef with someone you really hate them and no one really understands you. I'd say the Bay turtles are written more like what old men think teenagers act like.

I don't know what you mean by character development with the 07 movie but there was some with the Raph and Leo stuff. Standard as it is but it's there.

TMNT III had Raph's tough exterior warming and and Mikey wanting to stay in a place were he's appreciated rather than hide. It's all pretty schmaltzy but I certainly but it's there.

The fact that you compared something like Return to New York to The Dark Knight Returns says it all.

In terms of impact; of course not. In terms of quality I'd say it's up there.

Well I'm back with an additional opinion on this. And let me just preface it by saying that by holding my opinion it is in no way a judgement on anyone else's opinions, tastes or ideas of what should or shouldn't be to applied to the Turtles if it happens to fall on the opposite of how I feel about this... So get those panties comfortable, no need for bunching at this time.

After seeing online what a bunch of these lyrics actually say, I have to say I'm rather disappointed. Are some "music" artists in the rap genre so stuck inside the box on rap-acceptable topics that instead of making a 'song' about the Turtles as the subject matter they chose to make it about typical overused rap topics and just shoehorn the Turtles into it?

I mean no, Vanilla Ice's song was not directly about them, just the "ninja" reference. But that's all it needed to be.

But to make the lyrics about typical things like money and just add the Turtles to it because, well, hey, they're green like money!... :tgrumble: To me (and maybe it's just me), it feels insulting toward them and a lack of consideration for beloved characters of 30 years.

Hope it happily finds it's home way back in the end credits...
