View Full Version : Splinter: "It's been a long time" to April

I spotted this quote before I was about to bash the author of this article (http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Here-Why-Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Aliens-All-66432.html) for beating the dead horse about the aliens thing. But then I noticed that quote at the bottom and became intrigued:
And we see April’s first meeting with Splinter (Tony Shaloub), who greets her with the mysterious, "It’s been a long time."
At this point we can only speculate, but boy is speculating fun! What do you think it might imply? Either:
- As a child, April got a glimpse of her dad's test subjects (the non-mutated turtles and Splinter) and maybe Kirby even let her keep them as temporary pets before taking them to the lab, or she was introduced to them on a "Bring your Kid to Work Day"
- April's dad is actually Splinter, maybe not even entirely: When hit with the mutagen maybe he got fused with the lab rat or something they they became one being.
- Splinter is referring to the last time he saw and interacted with a human being.
Wanna post your theories?

I don't think Splinter is April's Day. According to a Megan Fox Interview, April's father died in a Fire.
April's father was a Scientist, a Shadowy figure was funding the whole thing.
Its possible that, As soon as Splinter gain sentience, He noticed April as a Child with her Father, Then at some point when something happen, Which ended up with her Father dying from a fire. Splinter had memories of the incident, and knows what really happen to her Father.

Maybe she THINKS or was TOLD he died in a fire, but was actually mutated into a giant rat....

Maybe April's father was creating some sort of Mutagen to create Super Soldiers for the Foot Clan, He did some Animal Testing, Testing it on a Lab Rat then 4 Turtles to see what happens.

Great job Lou 500! i think April might have had Splinter and the Turtles as pets before Kirby and Sacks mutated them, OMG! TigerClaw that idea is something i could really see happening! "Thats what your father and i were trying to do, create heroes" it make a lot of sense!

I thought they confirmed that the Mutagen came from space? So that wouldn't work

Thank you. I realized a flaw however with my first theory: it would seem callous of a dad to let his kid look after these animals for a while before taking them away to get experimented on. (even if he doesn't mention that part)

Maybe it did, but perhaps Sachs and co. got to it first and discovered its unique DNA-altering properties and decided to see if they could manipulate it to their will.

Maybe she's sees them at a young age with her father in the lab and she names each one of them including Splinter years later she recognizes him when brought to their lair

Who knows. Her dad could be dead, her dad could be Splinter, and Splinter could just remember her from when she was a child. I'm still going to go see this movie!

Really hate the Splinter is April's father thing. Hope that's not the case. Seems like people are really going for that angle.

I don't like the idea, but it's still a possibility that it could happen. You never know

In the IDW comics, April is the one who names Splinter and the turtles when they are in the lab. Also in IDW, Aprils father works at Stockgen and dies of a stroke. I'm thinking they borrowed from this. There is a "young April" in the IMDB credits. So I'm guessing that April was a kid hanging out at Stockgen with her dad and named Splinter when he was a lab rat. Now it's 16 years later and April is all grown up and she meets the rat she named at the lab years ago. Splinter remembers her from all those years ago. I don't think he is Aprils father. Doesn't line up with the other info we know. Just speculating though. We'll know for sure in two weeks!

Maybe in that fire that April's dad died in, Splinter was already mutated at that point and saved her and she doesn't remember or passes out or thinks it was a dream.
I'd bet on earlier interaction as well before he was mutated. Maybe she played with him or was nice to him like he was a pet instead of an experiment.
I don't think Splinter is April's father.

...dies of a stroke.
If you haven't read the IDW comic, don't click.
Nope, he's alive. He's in a wheelchair when April, Casey and the Turtles arrived at their home. April gives her mom a vial of mutagen and it curse him of being paralyzed.

Splinter and the turtles may have belonged to April as pets when she was a child. This could be where she names them. Her dad may have been experimenting with the mutagen and needed test subjects. He tells April that her pets died when in reality he's using them at his lab. After much experimentation, Splinter and the turtles may be growing smarter and smarter. Someone (possibly Sachs) doesn't like what her dad is doing (maybe wants the credit for himself), kills him off and lights the place on fire to cover it up. The "test subjects" escape and grow up in the sewers. All the while, someone (possibly Sachs again) continues the TCRI research going in his "honor." Thinking Sachs though is running things for Oroku Saki who may have been passed the mutagen down through the generations and is overseeing everything. I can only speculate that the ooze was from an ancient alien clash like the one depicted in the wall mural. Just my two cents.

It could be worse.
April could be a drawing come to life. Or she could get transformed into a roach for a little while.
Most things people are saying they might not like about this movie are mild compared to the bizarre stuff that has happened in other incarnations. As long as the movie is consistent with itself and there aren't any glaring plot holes I'll be happy.

What if the the turtles are being experimented on separately from the ooze. An altercation between Kirby and Sachs heats up there's a scuffle, table or racking with the turtles, Splinter and the ooze all get knocked over... The fire gets set accidentally, Sachs takes off, Kirby is killed accidentally (or just isn't saved), turtles, ooze and Splinter are washed away down the sewers... ?
That would connect all the dots and squashes all this 'destiny' crap. Still an accident that causes their mutation.
edit - April can visit the lab a few times and 'befriend' Splinter and the Turtles. There. April dot connected too.

That could be one possibility, April's Dad suddenly realizes, They intended to create Super Soldiers for the Foot Clan and he didn't wanted any part of it.

Yeah, i was thinking the same thing. Kirby and Sachs were working on a super-soldier serum. Kirby finds out Sachs is using it on animals and doesn't like it. Tries to stop Sachs but gets killed in the process. Lends credence to Sachs telling April that heroes are created. He may have been speaking about the super soldiers with no knowledge of the turtles.

I also would think, since April befriends the Turtles and Splinter, that would mean those same values would carry on from father to child. Meaning, April and her father are caring to not only people, but animals. So I also firmly believe that it is possible that once April's father found out they were using the mutagen to make fighters out of animals, he seriously pumped the breaks. Maybe even tried to take the research/information he had, and try to expose it to the press. And that would have led to his demise. It'd also kind of be ironic, that he'd try to go to the press about it, and April grows up essentially becoming the press, trying to get all the dirt on Sachs and Co.
That's an equation I see would fit.
Makes me wonder if it will be revealed in this movie or a possible sequel, that all the animal testing is done and they now want to move onto humans. Like many Turtle medians before this one.

You know, I heard this news and thought I would be totally against it, but surprisingly, I'm opened to this idea. It's not too far fetched, while she was not Splinter's daughter in the comics, didn't he once welcome her and called her daughter?

Oh my bad. I knew he worked at Stockgen and had a stroke. I haven't read all of the issues though. I doubt very seriously that Splinter is April's father. If he were, he would have tried to find her long before she found him. Also he probably would have been a bit more emotional when seeing her other than just saying "been a long time" I think he's just a rat that maybe April played with and fed when she was a child. Now he's mutated and recognizes her.

I don't know if anyone else read the scene reviews from Comic-Con, but it appears as if April recognizes Splinter before he even says her name. So that may add that she did know Splinter a little bit better than we expected. This is how the article states it:
The movie references game thick and fast when they took her down to their sewer base, which was referred to as, “Our Fortress Of Solitude, our Hogwarts, our Xavier’s Academy.” When O’Neil glimpses Splinter, she knows his name (“What if she’s a Jedi?”). Splinter clearly knows who she is too, ending the scene by saying, “We meet again…” Looks like there might be some new backstory tinkering going on here.

Well, She was a Kid when her father was working in the Lab.
She is probably the ones who gave him his Name and the Turtles, Just like in the IDW comic.
