“I remember, after the first trailer had just dropped , the FX guys at ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) were so glum at some of the online reaction to the Turtle faces. People don’t realise the time and energy that go into how a film looks or how a character is animated. These guys at ILM are bigger Turtle fans than most people will ever be, and they’ve tried more versions of the final look than anyone will ever know… They’ve tried the big noses and they don’t work, they just look ridiculous when they try and talk- it looks like a cartoon! It worked in 1990, but it just doesn’t today, not when it’s got to look real. And it’s funny how the public reaction to the Turtles’ new appearance mirrors exactly what the characters deal with in the film. They’re mutants who aren’t accepted by the world for how they look- you really have to love the irony!”

so pretty much...the ILM guys are bigger turtles fans than anyone out there, we just don't get it and fans are stupid for not liking them right away....

or in less words "You are not a true fan if you dont love these unconditionally"

and i actually liked this guy, guess he is just another hollywood douche

but seriously are we not allowed to dislike anything? many of us have given good reason and not just we hate it to hate.

its like everytime someone has some sort of legitimate issue , some one attached has to come along and pretty much say love it unconditionally or give up your fandom

like honestly how can some of you support this, whether you like it or not, the guy just pretty much insulted your entire fandom, yet most of you will giggle cahulk it up and go "these turtlez iz the bomb tee hee"

*sigh*

Look... I can completely understand people being disappointed in public reaction, it's not lost on me that they probably put A LOT of work into this, I've had my hands in a bit of modeling/animation for years and while I'll probably never be nearly as good as these people I've watched the industry for a long time and I get it, a lot of work goes into it.

But honestly... I find it unprofessional to come across defensively like that. Ok, so it's one of the actors speaking, not the design team, but still. Saying they're bigger fans, using the same lines fans have used at other fans who didn't care for the look... It just doesn't come across well on them. Were it me, I'd put it aside and ignore what people were saying.

I mean come on, these were drastic facial changes that aren't too pretty, it can't be expected everyone is going to immediately love it, the general public had not already spent the months THEY did staring at those screens, creating and working with those characters. Once we finally got hints, they themselves already had plenty of time to get used to the designs they were going with. The public had not spend months putting so much care and every little detail into them that they did. On top of the fact that the whole team took forever to give the public any hint of their personalities, etc to give those who are weary some reason to decide that maybe they liked them after all... Their own choices are a part of it, it's not just the public "being mean."

Getting as much as we have as of late and getting a lot of personality from them, that has helped my feelings for it a lot. But I feel no reason to feel like a jerk for not feeling that way any sooner, it was their choice to take this long in giving many of us reason to feel good about it.

CyberCubed

No, they deserve the criticism. The Turtles designs are hideous. I don't mind the clothing but the humanoid faces and those goddam nostrils have traumatized me to this day.

Also making them big and "Hulk-like" instead of ninja's is bad. They look like a love child between Hulk and Shrek.

No, I think people realize it. Clearly there was a lot of work put into this (even if I feel they could have done more at the design stage)... but none of that changes the fact that many people just plain found/find the designs unappealing. I sympathize, but... the ILM folks are professionals, and criticism is part of the business. If they can't deal with that, how is that the fans' problem?

These guys at ILM are bigger Turtle fans than most people will ever be, and they’ve tried more versions of the final look than anyone will ever know… They’ve tried the big noses and they don’t work, they just look ridiculous when they try and talk- it looks like a cartoon! It worked in 1990, but it just doesn’t today, not when it’s got to look real.

I know this comparison is going to raise some folks' hackles, but... Rocket Raccoon doesn't look like "a cartoon". He looks like a talking raccoon. And he looks great. Weird how they managed to pull that off, but this team couldn't pull off Ninja Turtles that look like Ninja Turtles?

Making inhuman designs look natural is their whole job. Trying to say that there was just no way to make the classic designs, or at least a happier medium between them and what we have now, work? Sorry, but I really think that's nonsense. I really believe they could have patterned them loosely on the Henson designs and given them a bit more expression and they would have looked great. It was a deliberate choice not to do that, and for better or worse, that choice has earned this movie whatever reaction it's inspired.

And it’s funny how the public reaction to the Turtles’ new appearance mirrors exactly what the characters deal with in the film. They’re mutants who aren’t accepted by the world for how they look- you really have to love the irony!

Oh, f'r the luvva... :trolleye:

But Rocket Raccoon always looked like a talking raccoon. The turtles never really looked like a talking turtle before. It's really mind blowing why people couldn't understand that.

Do we have any idea when this guy said this?

I'm not gonna hold anything against ILM or others, it's just one person's statement, but honestly it's soured my mood on it a little at the moment, at least to this actor.

It's Hollywood... it's a fact of life that Hollywood takes a lot of crap and you have to have the you-know-what's to deal with it or you may as well go home. If you're going to make statements that do nothing but help encourage further polarization of an in-fighting fan base, you aren't a hero to it either.

I am glad it is not Leo's physical actor that decided to come out and say this, but I'm sure he's got his own sore spot to deal with considering the part he lost in it.

Really, if this was a recent comment made by this guy, well good one on ya Jeremy for helping to create another one of "these threads" across the internet. If this was not recent and he's gotten over it himself, then I wish that video person would have not bothered to bring it up in the first place...

Well, they don't look like talking turtles now, so... why the change? Aside from being easier to pattern the CGI to the actor's faces, I mean.

You can argue that the classic Turtles didn't look like turtles, but they did look a lot less human, which helped make the whole concept work.

Either way, movie Rocket Raccoon looks like Rocket Raccoon, while movie Ninja Turtles look significantly different than any other version of the Ninja Turtles. Both were deliberate choices, and if one is less popular than the other... maybe that's be something the designers should be thinking about without getting too defensive, y'know?

Well, they did say that they tried the more traditional design but it didn't end up really well. Maybe they were just not talented enough to pull it off, I don't know. He only explained why they use the current design, I can't really tell how he's being too defensive there.

Idiots? Nah. His comments were a pretty silly appeal to emotion (https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/appeal-to-emotion) at best, and his reasoning only really holds water if you want it to. Lots of talented VFX folks are able to make talking, inhuman designs look "real". I don't buy for a second that the classic Turtles were some impossible task. We'd have to ignore a lot to believe that.

I guess having a different opinion is now enough to offend someone.

In terms of pointing it out to pretty much all of humanity - something all should be considering. Fans and, apparently, film makers alike. Esp if someone is considering freaking out or patting themselves on the back.

Is not everyone tired of people going overboard from all angles. Honestly I don't know what irks me more anymore, the overly dramatic "the world had ended because of this" types, or the "haha @ haters" superiority sorts. I mean, it's bad enough now that even a damn actor has felt the need to lower himself and join in on the rock throwing which is kind of shameful.

And that's a tricky position to be in, because the idea of a "perfect" TMNT will vary from person to person. And I get that. But that's a conundrum this property comes pre-packaged with. It comes with the territory. Yet I still find a lot of their decisions... puzzling, to say the least. (And I'm a guy who has usually found something to enjoy in most versions of this property, so... hey.)

This.

(Edit: I mean they did do a great job - and hell, ILM would be one of those dream places to work for me so I have no disrespect - but imo it's annoying to have some actor get a bit butthurt for them if not everyone agrees with their artistic direction.)

Although to be fair, as I consider myself largely in a gray area at this point, both sides damn near giving me whiplash. I swear if one isn't acting like, as you said, their first born was killed, the other is acting like they adopted a new child and is inherently better than all previous children, whom they must act spiteful toward in order show their love to the new one.

I've been a "hater" in terms of the facial features... gotten more used to it but still not big on it. And yet I've got what I consider to be a rather cute shot of Leo posted to Tumblr (and the guy is getting plenty of likes/reblogs) - I just blew some minds.

Everyone is so black and white on this subject. Gosh. I think the turtle designs are fine. The major problem are the unappealing faces for Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael. Leonardo's face is attractive, so attractive it belittles his siblings. The comparison makes Mikey, Don, and Raph's face even more unattractive, knowing they had a decent design but screwed it up for the rest.

Seeing how most of the advertisements only showcase Leonardo's close up really shows how insecure they are about his 3 siblings. It seems obvious that they knew they screwed up on Mikey's, Don's and Raph's face. It is also obvious that the artists do not understand responsibility and consequence either. If the design is odd then it is just odd, screw their sense of style and change it to what is actually attractive. There is no reason for this unappealing design to ever become official. The artists did a great job on Leo but severely screwed up on the faces of Mikey, Don, and Raph. They should have stayed with Leo's face and only made slight alterations.

I'm pretty sure that nobody claims that this is the best turtle look ever. I prefer the traditional look myself , I just don't think the design is as bad as some people made them to be. I can totally understand why others didn't like the way the turtles look in this film but just like Redeemer said the way some people react about this changes is just too much.

I guess plain old bandanas and knee/elbow pads "wouldn't work" either. The only way to make Donatello look "realistic" was to cover him in old Ghostbusters props and throw on some D-Von Dudley glasses.

Look, I'm not saying the whole movie looks trash. I think it looks like a fun time at the movies. However, I'm incredibly sick of everyone involved with the film making excuses for all of the things fans dislike rather than owning up to them. Instead of trying to excuse what they did, they should come right out and say "We just changed a lot of this stuff because we felt like it". Tired of the b.s.

They can have at their excuses far as I'm considered, I'm just tired of the attitude.
Bay, I believe Fox, and now this other actor have all taken a snobby "I don't care if you hate it/me" or other attitude now. (edit: granted I guess this guy does care if people 'hate.') Two actors and a producer that's supposedly not too involved? If anyone wants to speak on it, let the actual designers/concept artists do it. If they don't care to and are able to act professional, ignore comments and be proud of their own work, then good on them.

The only thing this Jeremy guy has succeeded in doing is make me possibly think a little less of the character he plays. His first two sentences are a good point more people need to consider. The rest just winds up sounding like the endless rehashing of any other fanboy who can't deal with someone not liking something.

so pretty much...the ILM guys are bigger turtles fans than anyone out there, we just don't get it and fans are stupid for not liking them right away....

or in less words "You are not a true fan if you dont love these unconditionally"

and i actually liked this guy, guess he is just another hollywood douche

but seriously are we not allowed to dislike anything? many of us have given good reason and not just we hate it to hate.

its like everytime someone has some sort of legitimate issue , some one attached has to come along and pretty much say love it unconditionally or give up your fandom

like honestly how can some of you support this, whether you like it or not, the guy just pretty much insulted your entire fandom, yet most of you will giggle cahulk it up and go "these turtlez iz the bomb tee hee"

Agree.

Can't watch the video yet, but F**K that entire quote.

Agree as well.

i happen to agree with the actor. after all, it takes along to to work on these.
i think he made a pretty good defense, but hey, to each his own.

this fandom will obviously disagree because its a fandom

Oh, but why isn't the actor sticking up for his buddy who talked for Leonardo when he was replaced by Johnny Knoxville? I guess some hard work can be brushed aside for cheesiness and others must be defended, right?

Donnie preaching the truth and putting the haters in their places. :tlove: ;)

What truth? There is no truth, just opinions. He sounds like a butthead douchebag to be honest.

Well, they did say that they tried the more traditional design but it didn't end up really well. Maybe they were just not talented enough to pull it off, I don't know. He only explained why they use the current design, I can't really tell how he's being too defensive there.

I guess having a different opinion is now enough to offend someone.

Just because they say they tried the more traditional route doesn't mean they actually did. I'm calling BS on this one. Until they actually release what the images with the more traditional look actually looked like, this whole quote about it not working is just a lie to me.

It's the filmmakers fault for not making the prefect TMNT that will appeal to every fans.

Well, for all of it's faults, the 2007 movie seemed to not have upset as many fans, why couldn't the new movie with an even bigger budget have tried the same? I guess it was just too hard, even though we already have a track record that it really isn't.

Yeah, they went overboard and overdesigned the damn things. And the sad thing is, everyone I know thinks they designs look like crap and have no desire to see this thing in the theater, or ever for that matter. This movie was supposed to increase the fandom, not make it more scarce.

i know right all the old turtles stuff is crap

This is why I hope this movie fails at the BO, that way we don't get anymore of this BS trope. Most of the biggest blockbusters when it comes to comic book movies seem to be the ones that actually stay close to the source material, but that's the thing, since the Turtles have become an animated project, they have been treated more like a creation to sell toys, and not as a comic book franchise.

I agree with him. I'd also really like to see the prototype models ILM made before they settled with the final design, too.

ILM should have tried harder, as they can do so much better.

They made crap design - they receive flak for it.
Things are simple like that. No need to overdramatize it. No matter how long they have worked on them, if designs still look bad, people have right to criticize their work.

This reminds me of Frozen. People have them hate cause they said the design sucks (they claimed the team ripoff Rapunzel (Tangled). When it tops box office and won 2 Oscars then the haters died down.

Just watch it in it's entirely then judge. But eh, why bother with haters who thinks they know it all.

Enough....this is the same pointless bickering over and OVER and OVER again.
