View Full Version : Guess the Rotten Tomatoes score for the new movie
CyberCubed

I predict a 40% rotten for the film, with some reviews really liking the movie but more than half not caring for it. It's going to be directly compared to the recent Marvel films and X-men Days of Future Past...and I don't think it can stand up to that or Captain America: The Winter soldier.
I'm expecting a similar review massacre as The Amazing Spiderman 2 got...so a score similar to that.

But going by Cybercubed's prediction of 40. Wouldn't that make it the highest or second highest rated TMNT movie?

I'm going to say somewhere in the 50s. It'll have an overall rotten, with plenty of reviews saying it was decent enough.
I'm at least positive it won't be as bad as Age of Extinction.
Maybe Rotten Tomatoes should grade it on a curve based on past Platinum Dunes releases.

Hard to predict the exact number, but I do think an overwhelming number of the reviews will contain phrases such as "over-the-top", "mindless", "silly", "absurd", "paint-by-numbers", "corny", "cheesy," "juvenile", "mindless 'action movie' mayhem," "CGI-fest", and "trying painfully hard - and failing - to be 'hip'." I think we can pretty much go ahead and write the reviews right now based on the trailers, and how well critics usually do with Movies Like This.
Oh, and every single goddamn article and review will contain at least four cute little pizza jokes and at least one side-splittingly clever "Cowabunga Dude! These Ain't Your Daddy's Ninja Turtles!"
One of the things I'm most against with this movie, is that it's 100% a movie only TMNT die-hards are going to find anything good about. I was really hoping for a movie with broader appeal. But even if it satisfies Those People, the reviews will be awful. I don't think one has to be Kreskin to figure that out.
I'd say, 30-40% if I have to be nailed down to a number. Won't make a difference, though. People who like the movie will continue to rail that critics know nothing. People who put all their stock in critics' reviews will continue to bemoan how All Movies Are Terrible Now (even ones they haven't seen). It'll do okay business, enough to green-light a sequel so we get to do this all over again three years from now.

This movie is going to get terrible reviews like any other tmnt related film.
I don't think it's just because it's TMNT. I think it's because films based on licensed properties over the last ten years have gone one of two ways: Either more grounded and cerebral, a fantastical situation in a Real World setting (the recent DC and Marvel movies), OR, tongue-in-cheek, wink at the audience, "poke fun at the source material because gosh, you guys, this is just such Silly stuff, isn't it?" kind of approach (stuff like Chipmunks, Smurfs, etc.).
Films in the former category generally do universally well amongst critics and fans in all age groups. Films in the latter category tend to make money but be ripped apart by anyone over the age of twelve, and are looked back on with a sense of, "Wow, I kind of wish they didn't make that movie."
The TMNT movie looks to be strongly in the latter category. It's not going to be ripped apart just for being TMNT, it's that in this day, if you want Mainstream Acceptance for your licensed movie, you have to take a more mature approach to the source material, not make fun of it.
It's going to get ripped because it's yet another movie of the type that critics and adults generally can't stand right now, not because it's TMNT.

He's talking about the Rotten Tomato score. There is a site that all of the critics go to, and they will say either the movie is fresh, or rotten. People online even have stupid wagers on what a movie's rotten tomato score will be. Right now, people are watching the site for the GOTG reviews. At the moment, they are in the upper 90's. Transformers, AOE, is in the teens, which pretty much means the critics hated it. And to be honest, all of the other TMNT movies on the site I believe are rotten as well.
Leo656

The earlier films also suffered from being released in an era where every single comic or cartoon-based movie besides Burton's Batman was complete trash, mostly, and it was generally accepted that even at their best, the movies in that genre could only be "Harmless Tripe". We were years away from X-Men, Spider-Man, and Batman Begins raising the bar. Back then, TMNT or any comic/cartoon movie getting an actual good review was about as impossible to imagine as Scooby-Doo winning the Oscar, regardless of quality. It really wasn't until Batman Begins that you heard anyone say, "Well, I don't give a sh*t about cartoons or comic books, but wow, that movie was terrific!" It just wasn't "allowed" to even think that way back in the days when the first TMNT flick came out.
Almost everyone has agreed that the first film deserved much better reviews than it got, even some of the critics who initially reviewed it. It was being graded on a curve of, "Well, it's still Just For Kids, so while it may be palatable tripe, it's still tripe," rather than, "Wow, that's actually a pretty entertaining movie on its own, and you don't even have to be a little kid or a huge nerd to think so."
Conversely, I think the second movie's reviews benefited from that same sliding scale. It got way more understanding and acceptance - if not praise - than it ever would today, simply because it was being judged on the Just For Kids scale. First movie under-achieved, second one over-achieved. Hindsight is interesting.

Ehh, the positive comments are mostly from dudes in screamo bands who got an advance screening with the Warped Tour. I don't expect that to have any bearing on critics or the general audience, necessarily. And I don't really count it as a review if they're not explaining what's good about it beyond basically saying "that was sick".

Mostly, only for the business side of things. The fact is, other than money, metric sites like rottentomatoes and metacritic are what development studios look at when judging the reception for movies, games, etc, and can completely decide what goes into a sequel or even if one gets made. In reading a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff about movie and game development, you hear a lot of big shot producers saying stuff like, "What can we do to make sure this product gets at least an 80?" It's almost as important to them as the actual gross, because it's one thing to count all the money you made from your product, but it's also important to know what the general feeling is, so you know what to do or not to do going forward. Entire series have been cancelled or hastily re-worked based on those ratings.
A lot of regular people do pay attention to them, too, but I feel like they have more impact on the business side of things where there's less room for discussing the nuances of things. "Our movie did a 70. Their movie did an 85. Their movie had more explosions, so we need to fix that in our next movie." I think fans just like reading a consensus of opinions but don't put as much stock in those opinions as people who actually have money involved.

It's a balance of the two. When the money's coming in just fine, they care a little less. The second that one of the movies in a series falls even a little bit short, they hit those websites looking for things to "fix" based on what people complain about. One of the things that annoyed me about "Man Of Steel", for example, was that SO much of it was done as a direct response to "Superman Returns". That movie was full of blatant "fixes" based on stuff people online cried about with the last movie. You could see the strings; "People said there wasn't enough action last time, let's just go ahead and blow up everything this time, so we get some'a that Avengers money."
So, while the money counts for most, general consensus counts for a lot, too... but it tends to carry more weight when the money slows down.

I wanted to know when the embargo lifts myself. The only reviews I am truly looking forward to, are not even from the major critics themselves, but Black Nerd and JerermyJahns, who I think can give the reviews I want to hear. I don't need to hear how pretentious the critics think of themselves and outlook view of a movie, or trying to reach for some deep meaning or expecting some deep meaning in a movie when there was never an implication that that was what the movie was being made for to begin with.
Right now, we got critics giving GOTG rotten scores, simply because the movie is too much fun. The TMNT are fun characters and the movie is giving it this vibe that it's all about the fun factor and just enjoying yourself for an hour and a half. And I wish the critics would get off their high horse and understand this.
I'd wager somewhere in the 30% range. I don't see this going over well with critics, but I hope I'm wrong and it's a solid addition to the summer.
The consensus to really determine if a movie hit the right notes I would assume would be the movie metacritic. They actually poll people at the movies to give the movie they just saw a rating with A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D- and F. When it starts to tinker into the D's, it usually means it's not going to be well liked by the GA and will find it difficult to get in it's profits. Granted, like anything, this isn't always accurate. That site got a good rating for the last Star Trek, and the movie still disappointed in the box office.

And I can disagree or agree with critics all day long, but at the end of the day, they get paid for their opinions and I'm just a geek with too much time on his hands. On the flip side, movie critics are more invested in what makes a good or bad movie and aren't beholden to brand or product loyalty. Far too many people have said "It's TMNT, how can it be bad?" in reference to the movie, the cartoons, anything, for their opinion to be considered anything but highly biased, thus making it impossible for any non-fans to give their opinion any weight. Are fans more aware of some of the intricacies and nuances their favorite franchise has, and thus more apt to point them out and discuss them? Absolutely. Do those same people honestly know what makes a "good" or "bad" movie, though? Can they distinguish the many, often very subtle variables that separate between "Entertaining" and "Good"? Because things don't have to be good to be entertaining, but too often "fans" can't quite grasp the idea that just because something tickles your fancy doesn't mean it isn't still bad.
I used to review CDs for my high school paper. The very first thing I was told was, "Don't be a fan". Critics have to approach things objectively, because they are addressing both fans AND non-fans of a movie, record, whatever. At least, that's how it's supposed to work.
I very, very often disagree with critics, myself, but I get where a lot of them are coming from, and I often agree with parts of what they're saying even if I disagree with the main assessment. I tend to look less at the star rating and way more at the body of text, personally.
I kind of know what you mean, though. I loved "Speed Racer" and I don't think anyone who didn't love the original cartoon could "get" it. :ohwell: I think they should, because it's a lot of fun and I genuinely don't agree with like, any of their "negatives". But hey, they thought it was too loud and too silly, and if that's what they thought then whatever, they're doing their job. I kind of don't think anyone who never saw the show had any business reviewing it, so yeah, I totally do get where you're coming from. I just don't think that, in general, "fans" are objective enough to really critique a film. They're too close to the material.

currently sitting at 38% on Rotten Tomatoes.. just fyi
Exactly. Well said.
Critics' opinions aren't scientific fact, and some are better than others, but they are supposed to look at things without the "fan goggles" on and look at it on its own merits as a story and a piece of creative art. I think it's important to at least consider these different perspectives. You can be a fan of something and still acknowledge its flaws and shortcomings. If anything, the fans should be the people who want their property to be as good as possible, right? And sometimes that means being critical when it's worth being critical.
I love TMNT, and it's because I'm a fan that I won't support just anything with the property's name attached to it. I want it to be handled well. I want quality, because I think the property deserves it and I think it'd be stronger for it.
You know how a lot of people have the reaction like, "It's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; did you expect it to be good?" in response to this movie, or a part of the franchise (or even the franchise as a whole)? I've heard it. And I'm tired of that mindset and that kind of question. I want the sheer strength of the material to make that question seem ridiculous. And every time we get a sub-par or mediocre installment, it gets that much harder.

What's wrong with Rotten Tomatoes? There is a difference between quality and loyalty, and it seemingly shows with the critic/audience divide just because real fans are glad to see them back. That said, Metacritic (still with the bulk of reviews to come) has it just out of the yellow range with a 39 rating, and I feel that will pretty much follow Rotten Tomatoes' lead. Its similar to long-running shows such as The Simpsons, Wheel of Fortune, and Spongebob; while far past their best quality, the loyalty and legacy provided that it can satisfy what the brand means to them is what matters most, not how good of a plot is.

Do most people even read what critics write? I speak for myself but I'd rather read a fan review than a critic's one.

You know what? In cases like this, I try and read reviews from people who identify as "fans", and people who admit they have nothing to do with the licensed property in question, and I count how many things they agree on, because if people who love a franchise and people who aren't at all invested in it are saying similar things about a movie, I have a pretty decent idea that those points, at least, are pretty valid. Good or bad, if fans and non-fans are sharing similar points in their critiques, I know there's some more weight behind what they're saying. If two people start from completely different positions and reach the same conclusions, well... that's telling, y'know?

I rather go with critic reviews because most of the time they know nothing about the subject of the movie so they ACTUALLY review the movie.
Fans can go all over the place simply because they are fans and enjoy seeing X thing on screen, etc, etc. Reading some GotG reviews has some people enjoying Ronan while others calling it a waste of the character. I dont care about this i will make my mind of the use of the character when i see it. But if a reviewer says that X character was useless then that means a lot more.

I'd honestly put more stock into the Metacritic score as opposed to RT. It gives you a better idea of how much the reviewer liked/disliked the movie instead of making it into a matter of simply bad or good.
A critic review will tend to weigh more than a fan review, because a fan is most likely going to enjoy the movie regardless.
A critic will represent what a mainstream fan and/or audience will think. And as much as we are fans of the franchise, we need to acknowledge the majority of the audience that will see this movie will still be "mainstreamers".
I'd honestly put more stock into the Metacritic score as opposed to RT. It gives you a better idea of how much the reviewer liked/disliked the movie instead of making it into a matter of simply bad or good.
RT still gives you an actual rating for a critic review if you check their profile page.

I've re-watched all three in the past few weeks. And yeah - the second and third movies have serious problems (the third especially is just god-awful) but I think the first movie holds up quite well. It's flawed, but actually has a decent story, mostly-good acting, and is legitimately enjoyable.

I need to watch III again. I remember watching it last year and being surprised that it was better than I remembered it being. The thing that grated me the most was the noticeably lower quality suits.
I still remember feeling like there were some problems with it, but also feeling like there was some charm to the plot. But it's a bit fuzzy, just remembering a few of the impressions I had rather than details.
Perhaps I'll see TMNT in theaters twice this weekend.......or perhaps I'll marathon the movies at home and console myself with pizza if tonight's showing yields a poor review from me as well.

being dull is worse then being bad, at least with bad movies you can have fun riffing on them. Despite the issues I have with this movie, I do hope the action scenes are bearable, even if the story apparently is paper thin.
I find it funny that they think the movie is Dull, The TMNT movies were never Dull when you take into account, all the action that goes on.
Well, action itself doesn't make a movie exciting. There has to be a good story and an emotional connection to draw people in. The Transformers movies (to pick an easy example) have a ton of action, but I don't care about what's happening or anyone who's on screen, so for me they're a chore to sit through.
It's really a subjective thing, though.

Eh, Transformers is still getting a fifth movie. But then again, it's already proven itself at the box office with 3 previous hits, and the monster that is out now.
I still think the overseas appeal of cars + robots gives Transformers a much stronger leg to stand on, though.
TMNT is going to suffer a bit from the delay between US and international releases. Enough word of mouth could really hurt the film's international box office.
Resident Evil (ugh, FML, Resident Evil, every one of them, has a higher critical rating than TMNT2014) has 20-30% critical review, but keeps getting sequels because of massive overseas market loving the series. That 33% from critics is inconsequential to the 68% audience rating. And that's not good on either front, but still makes money.
So TMNT2014 is at 17% with critics. The lowest of any TMNT movie now. But if the audience ratings start coming in at 75% or so, that can still bolster the international take. If the general audience consensus is 40% or less.......could be a nail in the coffin.
I'm honestly starting to worry about seeing this in 4 hours, but I bought the ticket. I'll watch it and write my review tonight. :tcool:

The relationship between Raph and Yoshi is endearing, the fight scenes are still cool, the camaraderie between the turtles is still there and it was cool seeing them somewhat portraying a storyline from the original comics - the time scepter; despite there being no Renet Tilly or Savanti Romero. Sure the suits look worse, but what did we expect? Jim Henson died for crying out loud.
If it falls below TMNT 3's 21%... ouch.
I imagine the reviews are gonna keep coming in quick, though, so who knows.
17% now. It was at 16% for a bit. >_<

Critics just hate kids movies with weird concepts.
Sarcasm or not, that sort of thing doesn't really translate well online. :P

"It's nearly impossible to gauge what constitutes a "good" Turtles film"
I like that. With this franchises diverse history, it's pretty much true.
That was actually a backhanded compliment about the franchise's relatively sh*tty film history, as nothing it's put forth on a major stage has given the impression to most reviewers that they could expect something on the level of, say, The Dark Knight in terms of a legitimately good stand-alone comic book film.
Which is wrong, but I can't blame them for what it's historically delivered and if I weren't versed in the Mirage comics among other things, I'd probably agree.

Man I can't believe its only at 17%.
Looks like me speculating it would get at least 40% was being way generous. Holy hell is this movie getting absolutely raped by movie critics.

Most mainstream movies have at least 100-150 reviews counted into their score.

Sadly, I feel like it's earned it. I'll wait a while before I really discuss my gripes.

It totally earned it. I walked into the theatre thinking, "Well, it can't be as bad as you're fearing. You might even enjoy it." And it was even worse than I thought.
I can't see this cracking 20% for its final score. I'd be amazed.

So, what are the critics main beef with the movie? I haven't seen it yet, but I can't help that the critics are automatically dumping on this just because Bay and Leibersman is involved.

That is what it seems like I mean it's a bit bizarre that critics are ranking it so low while almost everyone else is loving it.

Main complaints I've seen from critics have been that it's generic copy/paste blockbuster (I can sort of see it; it's got a near identical climax to Amazing Spider-Man), not much character development (nobody really has their own character arc except maybe April and that's a stretch), and feels half-hearted.

16 %, from the reviews, sounds appropriate.

Ouch...looks like it's settling at the lowest of all TMNT films for critics.
It's currently at 66% with audiences, barely above 2007 CG film and higher than TMNT III.
Wonder if it will continue to drop like the critics' rating did, climb, or hold steady.

The only people excited are in the movie section, on this board, right now.
General audience is pretty "meh".
Also, they've really hurt their foreign by opening months later in other markets.

It could go either way, but I have a feeling it'll drop to around 50ish%

The climax is more like the first TMNT movie with a couple similarities to ASM2

Of course.

The climax is about the villain releasing a harmful gas from the rooftop of the evil corporate headquarters in downtown Manhattan. A big battle ensues between the hero(es) and the villain, leading to a tower spire collapsing and crashing to the ground below.
I could be referring to either The Amazing Spider-Man or TMNT with that summary.

Red Robin

This movie seems to have the same negative potential as Batman and Robin had in 1997. It could easily burn the franchise for years. And if we follow the critics so far it seems like this will happen.

But with Bay's name attached it might actually make enough money even if it isn't critically acclaimed.

And it'd be worth it, if it lead to something on the level of Batman Begins in the end. Not expecting that necessarily, though. But it's a beautiful dream. :twink:

That's my hope: this movie tanks after opening weekend, the studio cans any plans for a sequel, then someone who's actually read the comics comes along in another 5-10 years and finally does the license justice again.

I havent seen it yet but if it was truely bad I already want someone else to do it right. Maybe this will be a good thing for the next person that wants to do a TMNT film. Keep the freaking origins as close as possible to the original and do a better job casting.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Liebesman's track record speaks for itself. The guy doesn't have a single film with a "Fresh" score on RT. In fact, I'm pretty sure his highest rated film is in the low 40's. Hire a terrible director, expect terrible reviews.

It's not just him. Platinum Dunes only knows how to make terrible movies. Their average RT score is 27% (doesn't include TMNT which is at 20%).

I'm surprised the score is that low. Is it a good movie? Far from it. 20% though? It wasn't that bad.
Apparently Into the Storm is keeping TMNT company around the 20% range.

Wrong. His highest rated movie on the rotten tomatoes site is the killing room, it has a 67%.

TMNT is getting a B cinemascore. In relation, cinemascore gave Transformers 4 and Captain America A-, GOTG and X-Men got A's. Other B rated movies this year include A Million ways to die in the West, INto the Storm, and The Purge 2. But note, Lucy got a C+ and Hercules got a B+, and Lucy is spanking Hercules across the box office (domestically anyways)

Not always. Critic darlings like The American and Drive, which had high rotten tomato scores, had bad cinemascores (but then again, I didn't like Drive at all, and is probably one of the movies I hate the most)
