All of those were puppets. Not nearly enough CG in this film.

I see mini posters now. That will end up crumpled and in the garbage in no time.

That is pretty much the takeaway with the film. The larger sized turtles make for great action. Easily one of the more impressive action films of the summer when the turtles are on screen.

I also did not watch the behind the scenes footage, so the slope sequence was fresh.

Was this a raph centric movie or did the turtles get equal screen time. And was it based around them or the humans...

Probably half and half. The human story (even the ultimate objective to the plot) was pretty light. There are even make tongue-in-cheek monologues moving the plot forward at times.

Yep.

Much like the IDW series, but April named them when she was younger.

Splinter learned from books in the sewers.

Really sounds like some of the speculation was true, that they really played down the Japanese influence so the film would play better in China. To me, the Japanese backstory and Yoshi/Saki rivalry isn't extraneous. That's a major bummer they cut that. :ohwell:

See, that's my entire thing, I'm a story-before-action kind of guy with movies and frankly, the story sounds completely like an afterthought to facilitate the fight scenes. I've seen a million CGI fight scenes in my life and they don't impress me as much as a good story does. :ohwell:

Turtle Van was basically a gag to close the film. No sequences.

That video that was linked not long ago in here is very similar to the animation. There is a nice overhead shot of the city in moving still-frame like the comics, but overall it's pretty cheap I would say.

I've discussed this a ton of times with the most TMNT diehards. You can't expect this franchise to dish out a Batman Begins style presentation. This film has some things in common with that film, ultimately that's just not going to happen. The first film is the closest you're going to get to that. I mean, the storyboards were basically the comic books.

The violence. It was the most violent TMNT film to date by a healthy margin. Despite it being for kids, it's following the Captain America/Transformers trend.

I can't imagine anyone would be disappointed by the length of the action sequences. They all seemed to be the appropriate amount of time and very coherent.

Id like to throw my hat in....

...so there is a scene in the trailers where the Turtle stumble into a room FULL of the Foot, and the Foot rush towards the Turtles...

...do the Turtles rush in and have an epic 4 vs 100 battle, or do they comically run away?

They jam a circuit board (something of that nature) and get the door to close in between them and the room.

Exactly. That's essential backstory. I've said it before, but it's like a Spider-Man origin without Uncle Ben, or a Batman whose parents aren't killed. Just rips the soul out of the concept for no good reason.

I wouldn't say that. Uncle Ben and Batman's parents always have had one outcome for the most part. The major theme is Splinter (not Yoshi) being a father to the turtles.

The violence. It was the most violent TMNT film to date by a healthy margin. Despite it being for kids, it's following the Captain America/Transformers trend.

I can't imagine anyone would be disappointed by the length of the action sequences. They all seemed to be the appropriate amount of time and very coherent.

good to hear...the fights in the earlier TF films were difficult to follow (poor cinematography), but the in the trailers the boys have been easier to follow.

There was no point to them fighting at that moment. They were running out of time and trying to work up to Shredder. The elevator scene concludes this.

The franchise doesn't have a "real" origin story, so probably should start looking there.

Who's got time for story? Less story = More Badazz Ninja Action and eye-popping CGI, my brotha. Story's a waste.

Eh, sounds like it'll do what it was trying to do pretty well, but disappointed they didn't aim higher.

That's... an interesting way of looking at things. I'd argue some things aren't extraneous. Krypton has to blow up. Otherwise, you're not even telling the same story anymore.

Anyway, I'm still excited for this interpretation of the TMNT...I'm still holding up my eagerness for the film until I see it myself and see how the experience makes me feel as opposed to what I think SHOULD happen. That's pretty much the general consensus from casual TMNT fans. This franchise biggest draw is it's weirdness and sense of humor about itself and the superhero genre/pop culture.

It really should never try to compete with properties like Batman and Spider-Man because it doesn't have the same legs. TMNT is on it's own pedestal and it excels when it doesn't take itself too seriously.

That's what I don't understand. If anything, for someone to say I'm not a fan of the franchise because they are blind to this, it's a bit absurd.

I see no reason why they can't expand in future films, but I think adding more substance to that very particular arc would be redundant as the film establishes their feelings for one another. Even Shredder mocks the relationship in dialog.

Hey man, it's cool...don't let people attacking you stop from answering all of our questions. Some people just need to blow off some steam and then get knocked out by the Foot. :trazz:

The more I'm thinking about the elements of this film and how things may have been added later on makes me wonder if this was a movie that just had too many rewrites and "cooks in the broth" so to say. Perhaps this isn't the right thread for this, but if they're really going to disregard so many important elements of their history...I wonder if they really did have a plan to completely change their origin all together and after all of the general public and ESPECIALLY fan outrage, they realized they didn't have something tangible on their hands by going with their original story.

Yet, they wanted to keep some elements in there because they liked it...all while adding in things fans just desire to see. I don't know, we'll have to see. I'm all for original tales as long as the characters are true to who I know and love. While sure it would be fantastic to see the Eastman and Laird pages jump off the screen and while I think that would make for an excellent film (I'm looking at you Del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn) that doesn't seem to be the case with what we're getting. I do think I need to control my hype and not let it over take me when it comes to the movie.

I just got to remember to enjoy myself....isn't that why we go see movies in the first place?

I don't know, I think how the characters are portrayed is definitely important but I think the story of how they got there is important, too. I mean, when it's a story most people who are fans are already aware of, why change it just to change it? Especially - and this is my big issue - when you know, for a fact, that some people ARE going to be upset about it. Why divide your audience, on purpose? Disregarding my own personal feelings, it's just a questionable business strategy to force choices you know are going to be controversial, and then tell people to "deal with it". It would have been simple enough to leave the basic origin story alone, or maybe just incorporate some new pieces into it without wiping the slate entirely and starting over, and therefore please everyone, thus ensuring more people buy into it. Seems kind of common sense to me.

Again, we can agree to disagree, I guess, but this all reinforces my opinion that this movie was developed by the wrong people, and that even if it's good, it probably would have been better if almost anyone else had made it.

I hear ya. Oddly enough, before Bay was involved I remember a lot of people comparing the script they were working on to Batman Begins and it stayed true to the comics.

In fact, whoever was running the Mirage Comics Twitter back in 2009 mentioned that the movie was sticking incredibly close to the Ultimate Collection Volume 1.

As far as the general public goes, they're general knowledge of the TMNT backstory is..."four turtles mutated by ooze and trained by a rat to be ninjas". Their knowledge would mostly come from the cartoon, and there was really no "cycle of vengeance" aspect. It was kinda-sorta thee, but it was dropped by Season 2. Then it just became Turtles foiling Shredder's plans.

Since this movie is mostly based off the cartoon, that's where they draw the biggest influence. Making the Hamato Yoshi part of the origin not-needed this time.

They could still always introduce it later, especially if they continue to draw from, the IDW series, but the movie seems to go along fine without it.

While you can find new ways to tell the origin story, I guess sometimes people just want to be creative and go a different route. Now having the TMNT be aliens from a different planet and stumble upon Earth would've been a no go for me but it seems like the story beats are still there...it's just a new coat of paint on some aspects. I totally see your point though.

I just look at a movie like the new Amazing Spider-Man series which feels like it's trying to offer something new and not giving much else. That first movie had EXTREMELY false advertising touting "the untold story" even though...it was everything we've seen before....this time just in a boring film.

That have stayed very true to the source material and the core of their stories/origins. I'm not expecting an exact Mirage #1 adaptation, but I'd at least like something that shows the writers at least read the thing and tried to respect the source material.

I think some of the films are definitely cookie-cut in terms of filmmaking style, but the content is hardly. Marvel just seems to be taking the approach to their properties like Eon does with Bond films. They want as much control as possible.

I mean, they could re-cast. Like people getting hung up on the name "Yoshi", they might get hung up on "Stockman". Sacks is a rich and powerful scientist. In his lone scene with the turtles (where they are bound) he has some interesting lines while examining them.

How long did it take you to get used to the designs of the TurtleS?

Having been a fan of the Mirage books, very quickly. Didn't seem much different from other variations. Once the action sequences kick in, it's pretty obvious why they look the manner that they do.

Whiplash in IM2 is a bastardization of two Ironman villains,

Why the hell was he initially purported to be the "main" villain for the past year, then? Why was it heavily implied, if not outright said at least once, that he was Shredder, if he's merely a sidekick?

Something's fishy, there. Something definitely sounds like it changed between when he signed on and when the movie was finished.

As in, take that sh*t somewhere else. When people who don't agree are having a perfectly normal conversation, and then some kid starts that name-calling "you're a crybaby" sh*t, it sends everything down in flames. You ain't been here long, but you been here long enough to know better.

So, again, take it somewhere else or zip your cakehole, if you can't be civil and let people have their opinions.

Why would they have to do this? They cast an actor who was okay with hardly showing his face and spewing cheesy dialog. Worked out well for the final product.

Marketing? Assuaging people's fears? They knew everyone connected Sachs with Shredder, and I can't entirely remember, but I swear at one point they even came out and said he was. Then, suddenly, he's not. They talked way too much about "Eric Sachs" for him to be so inconsequential.

Did they definitely change it because of backlash? I don't know, but it *seems* like a very strong possibility. I'm almost positive that at one point, Sachs was going to be Shredder. Maybe it was an interview, a press release, something, but I'm almost positive I saw it stated. If Sachs was never going to be Shredder, it wouldn't have been hard, at all, to come out immediately and say, "No, you are confused, Sachs and Shredder are different characters". People pull the "trying to keep it under wraps" defense but that's flimsy. Very very flimsy, because literally everyone knows Shredder is not a character named Eric Sachs. People thought he was, and made a lot of noise about it, and they could have gotten a lot of people on board a lot earlier if they'd come clean.

Again, I have a very strong feeling that many, many things were being reworked right up until the very end.

For one, we never had someone come out and give us straight forward answers. Just random dialog from actors who are paid to keep a smile and talk, even if they are unaware of what they just accomplished.

The adverts may have been misleading, but I'm not really one who prefers to be completely spoiled. I guess I'm speaking to the choir as I've been talking about this film to others who have not seen it and want every tidbit. To each their own.

Shredder sounds pretty cool for the most part. I think he had a couple silly lines, but that is the character for the most part anyway. Karai does most of the Foot work. Shredder just comes in for clean up or beating the hell out of the turtles.

Hah. If I recall, the breathing heavily scene is when three of the turtles are being pumped with adrenaline. Was one of the funnier scenes in the film.

I honestly think they were going for a Ra's Al Ghul type swerve in the story. The thing got blown up on the internet, and they made changes.

I honestly don't have a problem if Sachs was Shredder, considering they abandoned the Splinter/Yoshi story. It kind of makes having Shredder be Saki less important.

Well even last year.. Fichtner always said " I actually play a guy named Eric ". And even if he did lead people on deliberately.. Its obvious that they wanted to create mystery around the character.. get people talking about it. And it worked like a charm. And judging by some of the things being said on Facebook and Twitter.. it was a pleasant surprise. I think when you take a character out of the picture.. someone as iconic and important as Saki.. you in a way make him even bigger.. bc in the absence of something great people no longer take it for granted and it becomes bigger and more desirable.. kind of like when people die " in a way ". So by creating this type of climate where people are treating Saki like a long lost legend.. and then go to see the movie and find out he's in it? I could see how that would be exciting and surprising. But I think the main objective here was to get people talking about the movie. I don't think they went back and threw Saki in there.. Eastman has been telling people for over a year now... " Hold your opinions and don't listen to what you read about Shredder online.. Youll be pleased and your in for a pleasant surprise. He was right. Director are not going to be held hostage by social media. Bc if they listened to every complaint the movie would never get made. We are lucky they didn't go with the first draft.

True, true. As you said, though, the Turtles were smaller so Elias was both physically and characteristically perfect for the part in that version. If he wasn't almost as big as the guys this time around, there'd be no real point in even having him in it, seems like. Not sure who they'd get now. Roman Reigns?

And yeah, I'm one of the few who doesn't love Fox in general or in the role but also don't think it matters. Who were they supposed to get? He might be scrawny compared to a typical pro wrestler, like Cena, but he's not scrawny. I just think he has the attitude, and look to pull it off, and it would be a natural role for him.

Trying to think of others, not sure what age they would go for, Punk's in his mid 30's. I think if the actor is good enough their size won't matter as much. That being said Ben Foster is another person would could pull it off. I'm sure they'd just get some guy off that Teen Wolf show or something to bring in the young female audience.

Not to start taking this in a wrestling discussion, but Reigns will be a huge movie star in a few years, if they make a sequel in 2 or 3 years, he might be a big enough name that he could be the guy.

Hm. Movie sounds really good for what it is, but what it is isn't (and never going to be) something I'm particularly interested in. Sounds like a Marvel movie: fun, flashy, and relatively tasteful. But it takes a little meat to make me care enough to see it.

Nice to know I don't have to shy away, though. I'll either see this in a group or wait until it's released. I have zero problem with any of the content decisions mentioned so far (plus, yay, first faithful Karai since 2007!); just that it's not the kind of movie I get really excited about.

From what you describe with April's story, I have to say I like the sound of it.

So Raphael fights Shredder one on one? Does this take place earlier in the film? Thanks for the answers.

Was their any swearing in it?

Do the Turtles kill?

Was their any blood shown in this movie?

Yes. He fights Shredder when he goes to rescue his brothers. Maybe the mid-way point or so.

Some ass and ***** for the kids.

I'm not sure if they "KILL", but they basically kill poor Foot Soldiers.

Not much blood.

Can you tell me a little bit more about the emotional scene that made the woman cry.. or any other scenes that hit hard emotionally. And are the fight scenes martial art-ish? Like.. are they better than the old films fight scenes? more intense? And is the CGI believable during them?

So, wait a minute, April encounters four giant turtles and a rat and doesn't remember until later, when Eric Sachs is giving the cliché villain exposition monologue, that she had four pet turtles and a rat as a kid?

I have 2 questions...

1. Do they elaborate on why Sachs and Aprils dad were creating "Heroes" together? Considering he is a bad guy working with Shredder?

2. Are there any points where we see Shredder in a more acurate Shredder outfit before Sachs "upgrades" it?

Thanks

No Hamato Yoshi? No Oroku Saki? Is there any story to this at all?

Also, is Raph flexing bullets as dumb as it sounds?

Do they need one? Apparently, all they "need" is the turtles and the rat, yeah? They could be flying around on jetpacks, hunting vampires with Abe Lincoln, and it would be "just another interpretation". Or, so I'm told.

Simple. It conflicts with the IDW origin, invalidates Sacks character, and reduces April's role and emotional impact swiftly.

I just don't get why Sachs had to be a character in this thing in the first place, aside from maybe being a holdover from a previous draft where he was the Shredder. Seems like Baxter Stockman would have been a much better fit here, but I honestly think they backtracked late in the game and couldn't cut Sachs because they'd already filmed too much or couldn't break Fichtner's contract.

As for April... She had a solid role and emotional impact in the 1990 movie and they didn't need to pull some "Anakin Skywalker built C-3P0" plot contrivance to make that work. I dunno, maybe it fits well enough in this movie, but I don't see the point behind it. It's just a major change for the sake of making a major change.

agree agree agree, but who knows maybe they do a biological name reference or something Erik "Baxter" Sachs, or idk. but I wouldn't
mind that.

It's one of those kinda things where, you have a character who more or less has Baxter's "spot"... why not just make him Baxter? I'm sure they have their own ideas for Baxter for the sequels, but still, it's just odd. The entire scenario with Sachs has just been odd. I kind of don't believe that the role in its current form is what they intended all along for it.

I cant help but think that sachs was shredder up until the reshoots. And by that time couldnt change his name. But heck if there is a sequal and they make him mutate into a giant fly, they could call he anything.:D

Despite what others have said, your theory makes perfectly valid sense and I mostly believe that myself. I think it was the first Wolverine movie I was reading about - didn't see it yet, but anyways, I was reading an article about how movies get screwed up by studios, and apparently, with that Wolverine movie, they were already shooting, and the studio was sending over faxes demanding huge sweeping changes to plot, characters, scene sequences, etc. After shooting had already begun. And it was almost a daily thing, "Forget the script, here's what they want now, let's try and make it work with what we have on hand." Apparently, the movie didn't come out well. Go figure, huh?

So you can't tell me it's impossible that same thing happened here. I think it did. "They nerds are bitching again, we need a Japanese guy to do some wrap-arounds." I mean, remember when Bay said the Turtles "Were of an alien origin", then insisted he meant it was the *Ooze* that was of alien origin, and now, apparently, nothing like that is the case at all? Stuff was being changed VERY late in the game, here, and I think anyone who doesn't think so is kind of naive.

Yea I agree, thats never a good sign, however if there is any silver lining. It could be that it makes enough dough for a sequel and they will go in knowing the players and such. I hate that if this is the case but heres hoping for the best.

Also, is Raph flexing bullets as dumb as it sounds?

Haven't seen the movie, but I actually just saw a commercial for it with that shot in it. Raphael is yelling "RRRAAAHHH" and puffing his chest out, and bullets are firing out of his plastron like a machine gun.

Based on that shot? It might actually be the dumbest thing I've ever seen in this franchise. I'm home sick right now, and it made me laugh so hard I went into a coughing fit. This movie is officially trying to kill me. :trazz:

I pretty much went over that mostly.

There are martial arts. The old films really can't compare for obvious reasons.

No. She remembers when she overhears them use their names during their first encounter.

1. Something to do with a Japanese legend about a "hero" that saved a town from poisoning. Has more to do with the overall gamble of the film.

2. No. You just see him in robe-wear, fighting though.

There isn't much story. Giving detailed background into largely irrelevant sub-plots would have just contributed to more down time. Thankfully it was omitted.

Having the turtle's shells be bulletproof makes sense, and generated some of the larger reactions from the crowd.

Thank you, sir! Goofing around on the Internet while lying down wrapped in a blanket counts as "bed rest", right?

Is there a reason given in the movie that makes the bulletproof shells "make sense"? I ask because actual turtle's shells are definitely not bulletproof, so I'm not sure where that comes from.

Yes. They are mutated giant turtles. Turtle shells are seen as a defense mechanism for turtles. Pretty simple stuff.

Did you happen to get the name of the actor playing Saki/Shredder?

How one dimensional were the characterizations, particularly Shredder?

Okay. But to the point where they're bulletproof, and can actually fire bullets back out like a gun when they flex? That doesn't seem simple, that seems... insane.

Different strokes, I guess. Some folks are cool with superhero-level strong and powerful Turtles, some of us aren't.

the turtles CANT flex bullets back at people
