Just got back from an advance screening and had a great time!
Like most fans, I went in with pretty low expectations, since I'm not really a Michael Bay guy, and the designs and trailers had me skeptical.
That being said, finally getting an extended look at the Turtles in action, I warmed up to the designs a lot more than I thought I would.
The tone of the movie was pretty close to the first live action movie, maybe a little bit lighter, though. There were some funny bits, and the fight scenes were the best we've seen in a Turtles movie.
I don't want to get any more in depth than that for now, since I don't want to spoil anything, but I had fun and I'd definitely recommend it. And even though I'm not a Michael Bay guy, I *am* a Will Arnett guy, and will watch him in just about anything. It was fun seeing him in action, and Megan Fox and Whoopi Goldberg gave great performances, too.
And I don't know if there are any people who watch The View on the Technodrome Forums, but I heard that Megan Fox will be on the show Tuesday promoting the movie (Whoopi's one of the hosts, not coincidentally).

Putting aside all the things that we had already established were wrong with the film, it turned out to be pretty entertaining. I will see it again when it comes out.

I liked the second review. Definitely got me even more excited, seeing that it was "near perfect". I can't wait to see it.
But no matter how good the movie is, it won't stop those stupid purist "fans" from ranting about it being slightly different even years from now. People can forgive someone for being wrong, but it takes a lot more character to forgive them for being right. 8)

Yeah, You can say the same about the Nick series, There are those who don't like it, Because it stays a lot away from the original series, Yet it borrows some of its elements. With this new film, Its no different.
We live in a world right now, In which the Nick TMNT sets a new standard, The Kids of this generation will look at this, as there definitive version of TMNT.
Same for the new film, If it becomes a hit, We will see more TMNT films in that universe, for the next couple of years.

NOTHING will be as bad as The Last Airbender ok! NOTHING!
The things that movie did to the art of film in general was abysmal. At worst TMNT will just turn out to be an overly dumb blockbuster with obnoxious comedy.
Not degrading film in general or anything like Last Airbender...

Bob's got more:
*To reviewers of certain things green and nostalgic: You're going to need a bigger boat. Seriously. You have NO IDEA what's coming.
*Awful as an adaptation (EASILY the worst version of ____ ever) but even if it were an original thing, it would be horrid.
*Also: If you're review of ____ is "Well, it's for the kids?" You're just telling me you don't think much of "the kids."

And that is a pretty damning comparison he's just made.

I don't take much stock into what he is saying. Bc I believe he is comparing the new TMNT movie to the Nick Cartoon. The reason I believe this is bc he was comparing it to the Last Airbender Movie. He is basically comparing the New movie to the New Cartoon hence the word "Tie-in" Movie.

The stigma that reading reviews means you can't think for yourself is sort of narrow minded. I love reading reviews before or after experiencing entertainment. Comparing thoughts and trying to adapt to new perspectives can be enjoyable.

Oh definitely. But CC kinda has a thing for co-opting opinions on things he has no intention of ever seeing for himself, so I like to poke him a little, that's all. ;)
I love reviews as entertainment, totally. Sometimes they make me realize things I hadn't realized before, so they can definitely expand your perspective on the whole experience. To a lot of people, though, anything less than four stars is a recommendation to skip, and I hate that. I read a ton of stuff but nothing ever made me change my mind about whether I liked something or not. It's all just entertainment, to me.

I did like The Black Nerd's point of looking at this as another dimension of the TMNT world, which we got a hint of in the Nick toon. I like this theory, because I would love to see some sort of interaction with the movie Turtles vs the Nick Turtles in the future.

This film will get bad reviews. You can tell most critics were looking down at it before they even saw it. How many reviews are going to compare it to GOTG and say something like "just go see GOTG again". I'm just looking for a fun movie with some good action with the turtle personalities I grew up with. So when this is at a 40% Rotten Tomato score I won't be surprised or discouraged. It's already at a 63 on the Critics Choice site.

No one actually expects this to get good reviews do they? The last movie got like 35% on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers have never liked TMNT. The general audience who was not familiar with TMNT will rightly think the premise is ridiculous. This film is going to rely on people who loved TMNT as kids and can get behind the designs.

Honestly? Their movie history is spotty at best. I think the first movie is solidly good, but the second one is kinda plagued with moments of cartoonish idiocy (though it has its bright spots), and the third... well, we all know about the third.
I honestly feel that if the first movie were released 10-15 years later that it was, it would have had much better reviews. Comic movies with "ridiculous" premises have become much more accepted on their own merits than they were back then.

Ultimately, if you're an adult who is upset about the finer details of a movie in which turtles do kung-fu and eat pizza and ride skateboards, you may want to take a step back and ask yourself why. Nostalgia? Sure, I know there is an entire generation that stubbornly wraps itself in the things they enjoyed as kids and believe that is what defines them, but at some point, don't you feel ridiculous about watching the same ridiculous story over and over?
That is the million dollar question
I find it sort of amazing we went seven years between any bigscreen incarnation of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." I thought the animated film "TMNT" was a fairly charming take on the characters, and it managed to do the same thing right that the new film does: it nicely establishes and then plays off of the relationships between the four brothers.
As a movie, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is about as predictable as movies get these days. Once again, a film ends with a bad guy's scheme involving a glowing doodad on a rooftop and people hanging off of things one-handed, and I couldn't care any less about any of that. The film plays fast and loose with established mythology, making April O'Neil far more important to the lives of the Turtles than ever before, and the main result is it makes the world feel much smaller. Everything is related. There is nothing coincidental about April and the Turtles ending up together, and if that drives you crazy, then this may not be the "Turtles" movie for you.
In this new film, April (Megan Fox) is trying to make her bones as a crime reporter even though she's stuck doing cutesy lifestyle pieces for the Channel 6 news. The only person who seems to believe in her is Vernon Fenwick, and when she starts trying to chase down a big story about The Foot Clan, Vernon helps her.
Her efforts to crack the story bring her into contact with the Turtles, and from the moment they're introduced, the film pretty much leans heavily on the family dynamics of the Turtles and their sensei, Master Splinter. They argue, they make jokes, and at the appropriate time, Raphael declares himself finished with everyone. Throw in a pumped up version of The Shredder, and that's pretty much the entire movie. There's a bad guy hiding in plain sight, and all secrets are revealed at just the right time, and it all seems to be very easy.
The greatest thing this film brings to the table is a kinetic fighting style that makes the Turtles seem like they are actual physical threats to the bad guys. There are three big action scenes where the film kicks into a higher degree of fun that, taken together, add up to just enough of a thrill for me to recommend the film. There's one in particular that is inventive and impressive, and if the whole movie had been able to demonstrate that same level of energy, then I might be more enthusiastic about it.
Technically, the film is solid across the board. The character work on the Turtles (design quibbles aside) is actually pretty well-done, and the same is true of Splinter. My kids had a great time with it, and since it feels to me like they are the exact target audience, I'll call that a success. I can honestly say I was there at the very beginning of this long weird phenomenon, thanks to my friend Bill Rosemann. He was the comic nerd in our neighborhood, just like I was the movie nerd, and he told me the week it came out that I should buy a copy of the very first black-and-white comic featuring the characters. I remember thinking how very silly it was, and how it felt like they were making fun of comics in general, trying to be more ridiculous than anything else. This film barely resembles the story and the characters in that first comic, which is why I can't get to worked up about "continuity." This property has been through so many incarnations at this point that there is no single version. It all depends on how you experienced it the first time, and as someone who's seen all of these various incarnations, this one seems to be respectful of the source material and the Turtles, and there's not much more you can ask.
Director Jonathan Liebesman couldn't have had it easy here with the Platinum Dunes/Michael Bay combination riding herd as producers. They can be incredibly demanding and specific, and they've driven other filmmakers crazy at times. Liebesman seems to have come to this ready to play, and at its best, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles" shares something very important with last weekend's "Guardians Of The Galaxy": it is fun. That fun is something that a lot of big summer movies lack these days, and while it doesn't totally add up as a movie, I think the audiences that are excited to see it will walk away satisfied.
There's a poster quote for you, eh?
Decent review

Word is, they can get more showings in a day with a shorter movie. In this day and age where the majority of the movies are so front loaded, I guess each hour in the day counts for money earned by the studios. Not to mention, there is also this thing about movies being marketed to kids that shorter is better, considering we are dealing with smaller attention spans and bladders.
Of course, this is all hypothetical with no concrete evidence.

Can I say that I loathe the argument "Who watches ________ for Oscar-caliber performances?" Is it really so terrible to expect decent acting in any movie, especially one you have a vested interest in? Besides, Heath Ledger earned his posthumous Oscar for a dopey super hero movie role....so it just seems a bit disingenuous. Then again who really takes the Oscars seriously anymore anyway?

I can't stand critics who use snarky reasons like "Whoopi Goldberg is in this for some reason". And he said William Fichtner is one of the greatest badguys of all time but not in this movie? What other movie is a bad guy in, let alone IN. I only know him from The Dark Knight as the bank manager who yells "YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS ARE DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAD". The main theme of every review, critic or regular viewer, that I've seen is that the Turtles are great in this. That's all I need to hear.

William Fichtner is known to play bad guys, so I can see why he said that. He was the villain in last year's The Lone Ranger, he was somewhat of a bad guy in Pearl Harbor, he was quite the dick in A Perfect Storm, he was really good at playing both sides in Invasion, and he was a crazy ass villain in Prison Break.

Then what are the TMNT fans who are not liking the new movie because of white Shredder, the Turtles being grown in a lab instead of being completely unknown, April having possible blood connections to Baxter, the Turtles not being short, at all of that other stuff (mind you, I'm not one of them, I'm just not a fan of the clothing, some of the faces and Raph's too big of a size, and the fart and subtle sex jokes, I wasn't OK with it in the past, and I'm still not ok with it today)

I honestly don't remember that in GOTG, but there were several jokes that me and the rest of the audience just didn't laugh to. They're not paid to hate movies, but to be analytical in most cases. They certainly have their biases with what they deem good cinema, and that should always be factored in when read in the reviews. The review is there to explain why the film did or didn't work for a particular reviewer although some use it as open Mic night at the comedy club.
From what we're hearing/reading from the people who have seen the film, it's exactly like I expected it to be which is a train wreck of a TMNT film. It sounds like there might be some entertainment value if I can shut out the issues I already have. Bc they don't look as engaging as the 90's rubber suits do? Why? Bc they are ugly. Its not funny. Why? Bc it is not sophisticated? Why? Bc it is not funny. He went to this movie looking for Bayisms. Solid review. Confirms some of my fears, but also takes care to explain and justify its criticisms. I liked this bit in particular:
In the past, the Turtles’ appeal has been their lovable outcast status: These four oddballs are as insecure as typical teenagers, but because of their mutant strangeness, they’re even more outsiders, only having each other to rely on. Additionally, as the property’s title suggests, the material wielded a goofy, crowd-pleasing tone, delivering kung-fu fun while also acknowledging the grinning absurdity of the whole endeavour.
He really seems to get and respect what makes the TMNT work, which gives his whole analysis more weight, IMO.
Also, he made sure to credit Pete Ploszek and Danny Woodburn as the primary actors in their roles, which I feel like a lot of people are going to forget or gloss over. That was nice to see.

I don't get why people go by what critics or other online reviews say. There are ton of movies that are repeatedly bashed by critics and I enjoy them very much.
Critics aren't always right lol, it's the same mistake I made with GOTG or any other over hyped film.

So the reviews are averaging out at around a C grade or 6/10 with the consensus being it's not as terrible as originally thought but not close to being good?
That's just great.
Didn't see this review posted yet:

The biggest problem with Jonathan Liebesman‘s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is how disposable it is. If the movie was silly and goofy, but entertaining and engaging even on the lowest level, it might be something worth talking about. But this movie is a cinematic flatline that shows rare blips of life only to crash back down again into nothing.

Misspelling a character's name doesn't invalidate everything else they write.
It should. One of the most important parts of their job is spelling. If you can't take the time to proof read something you're publishing, and don't take the time to make sure you're spelling is correct, and your thoughts are coherent, then how can you be trusted? They don't even care about how they represent themselves. This is a common theme on the internet, get your blog post out there first don't worry about spelling or making sense.
Like I said I bet these people go into a movie with a nearly completed review, and just add a little more detail as soon as they run out to their car from the theater.
Someone said they're not paid to hate movies. Ok well they're there to critique them. I'm speaking for myself here, but most of the time I want to go in with a clean slate and decide for myself, and I must say I enjoy a lot more movies now that I don't take other opinions in with me. The TMNT movie is going to be interesting, because I've gone against my normal way of movie viewing and basically read what happens in the whole movie.

Honestly, was anybody expecting this thing to get good reviews? I don't mean that in a nasty way either. I've been a fan of this thing all along, but I was never expecting great reviews.

wow so this movie lacks both the charm and heart of the franchise because bay has his fingerprints all over it...I'm done:ohwell:
I gotta ask, you're done bc one review said that?
These critics are no different than any of us, save for the fact they get paid to post their opinions.
Critics, like us, are divided about this film...I've reading glowing reviews about the charm, the action, and humor...and others who hated it for the very same reason.
What some call a straightforward, uncomplicated storyline, others refer to as shallow...it's all relative.

Since the original 1990 film had similar reviews in terms of verdict at the time, I feel that there is still some potential, but ultimately, we as fans are our biggest enemies and contributors to the franchise. If we enjoy ourselves and share our good experiences, others will be determined.

I love this part right here...I’m a huge fan of Fichtner, back to the Prison Break days, but his role in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles didn’t quite work for me at the end of the film. I thought the performance was decent, but something was lost in the final confrontation. I can’t quite put my finger on it…
And this...Shredder was severely lacking in regards to backstory and character development. He’s the main villain, but we don’t know much more than that.

Yep, it's fairly obvious they changed what they wanted to do with Sachs/Shredder during filming based on the backlash from originally having a white Shredder. Of course there will still be people that think this was all part of their plan from the beginning.

I'm not too disheartened by poor reviews - fantasy / action films tend to score quite poorly amongst critics, but can do brilliantly with audiences. However, I am getting the distinct impression that this film is going to suffer from the 2007 film effect... that it doesn't really know what it is.
That sounds crazy. Let me expand... The 2007 film seemed intent on satisfying 2 distinct and incompatible audience groups: fans that hungered for something dark and gritty with character conflict and that all-important showdown between Raphael and Leonardo (ie me) and, well, kids. As a result it was neither a dark and gritty film, nor a kids' film, it was just a chaotic mish-mash.
It seems that this film has created a look that is designed to have a darker impact than, say, the OT, with giant, hideous, bad-ass turtles which might be in keeping with a grittier tone, but mixed it with childish humour and an over simplistic plot, more in keeping with something that would entertain a younger audience.
Creators of TMNT films need to define their audience from the outset. 'Everyone' is too broad a term for property as specific as TMNT. As long as film makers are trying to cater for everyone, there is going to be missed potential.
Yep, it's fairly obvious they changed what they wanted to do with Sachs/Shredder during filming based on the backlash from originally having a white Shredder. Of course there will still be people that think this was all part of their plan from the beginning.
I don't see how anyone could successfully persuade us that it was all part of the plan. The name Eric Sachs is clearly an attempt to Westernise the name Oroku Saki. They may have been able to backtrack with on-set rewrites, re-shoots and pick-ups but the name Eric Sachs will be a lasting legacy of their original intentions. That and a weak principle villain with no depth or backstory.....

my apologies i jumped bc im tired of reading the same argument in EVERY thread:
- when the trailer released, the posters released, the promo images, the second trailer, the wave of tv spots, the bits we see on twitter, and instragram, etc. all invoked the SAME arguements OVER AND OVER again, and now with the 'pro' critics giving their two cents...all im seeing is:
stoked: see, the critics are saying this is a good time
leery: see, the critics are saying this is terrible.
if im done with anything, its this tired argument. the thread has been ongoing for pages, and there are barely any actual reviews compared to the amount of back and forth.

Off the top of my head? Basically every Marvel Studios movie over the past six years, especially Captain America 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy this year, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Gravity, the Hunger Games movies, animated films like Frozen and The LEGO Movie. Monsters University and Despicable Me 2 had overall good reviews last year and they were in the top 10 at the box office as well.
In fact, of the ten top-grossing movies this year (http://boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?yr=2014&p=.htm), only three got overall mixed-to-negative ratings.

A couple of my favorite examples of how divided the critics and the regular audience can be, look at Rotten Tomatoes vs Metascore for Drive and The American. Critics were actually blasting the regular public for placing those critical darlings so low on the ratings scale. It was actually funny to see the those elite snobs getting their panties in a bunch.

Metacritic is a good "counterpoint" for sure. I find they generally tend to average scores a bit lower/more critical if they're highly-rated elsewhere, and a bit higher if they're especially low-rated elsewhere. Different system. The inclusion of a "mixed" rating instead of just "fresh" and "rotten" can skew things toward the middle. Still pretty reliable overall, though.

RT doesn't determine the "fresh" or "rotten" ratings. When the review is submitted to RT, the submitter selects whether the review is fresh or rotten. Some reviewers consider anything above a 5 to be good, and therefore count it as fresh despite RT's tomatometer standards. Sometimes they just select the wrong rating altogether out of carelessness or by accident.

Truthfully RT is really unrealiable for films that predate the website, since it's built to give numbers with data that requires a certain amount if participation from critics. Since critics weren't submitting their reviews to RottenTomatoes back in 1990, the score isn't extremely reliable.
Not that I'm necessarily saying the score would be extremely different if that wasn't the case, but I think it does make it pointless to compare tomatometer score of current releases with those of much older films.

Ohhh, I see. The other score was out of 10, so that's why I assumed it was the same.
70% would quality as fresh, I think. So that kinda makes sense.

I'm usually one to tend to worry about Rotten Tomato scores just because I want a film that I have excitement for to do well critically. This probably could be to blame due to the fact that from early 2007 to mid 2008, I was caught in all the hype and obsession for The Dark Knight and it was a truly rewarding feeling when the film was getting all the critical praise it received.
Of course, things are a little different here with TMNT. Critics have really never been kind to any Ninja Turtle film besides maybe the first film. Hell, even the 2007 CGI movie that people around here surprisingly love has a 30 something percent. As I mentioned in a previous thread, this movie is super personal for me and if critics don't seem to enjoy it...I'm not going to get too bent out of shape as I might have before. As long as me as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan walks out of the theater satisfied, I'll be content. Sure, a 60 or above approval rating would be nice and I would to see this movie steal the number 1 spot from GOTG next week....but we'll have to see.

Eh, I think I'll just wait until at least 50 reviews are in before trying to dictate which way this movie is going to land. But honestly, I think it's going to be one of those critic proof movies. Now that GOTG over performed this weekend, I'm expecting the same with TMNT. 65 million OW.

I do think that this movie is pretty safe from critics. It could get a rating of 5% and I don't think it would really impact the BO performance. Though I really think GotG is going to be an insanely big hurdle to face, especially since GotG is actually a lot more kid-friendly than the marketing indicated. If there's any one thing that could take a cut out of TMNT's performance, it's that. I couldn't even try to make a prediction here. This could really go either way.

At the very least, the movie must be really fun. This opener for a "fresh" review:
"There's no angst in this new franchise, no elaborate metaphor and no ambition to speak of. And although you could argue that that is in and of itself a problem, at least it smoothes out Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' many, many flaws. "
When your opening good review mentions "many, many flaws" I get nervous.
Trying not to read the actual reviews...worried about gleaming even more than I already know.

wow so this movie lacks both the charm and heart of the franchise because bay has his fingerprints all over it...I'm done:ohwell:
Exactly  You can tell right away the one's that have already made up their minds just by the terminology that they use.
Yep... Its quite obvious to. That's the problem when you allow just any shmuck to use your website (comicbookmovie/screenrant/movieplot,etc) to post his/her opinions. This is how ignorance spreads.. like a virus online. It also lessens the integrity of the website. And I guess it's asking to much for people writing a " professional review " to read over what they wrote before pressing the send button.
Nicely put. Imo.. this film sounds like it accomplishes everything that a TMNT film should be. And when I read words like " Swiss army knife" I just stop reading at that point.
the ratings get really interesting when a Score sometimes end up at 59%
I know I'll enjoy this thing.. that's all that matters. Not going to allow others to think for me by adopting their opinions bc I am too weak minded to think for myself.
My friend that went with me took his two youngest girls. Both said Rocket was their favorite character.
I have a feeling Rocket is gonna be a big fan-favourite for a while. He was very well-realized in that movie.

Just quoting the above to point out that the "leery" side clearly aren't the only ones who've already made up their minds. It goes both ways. Which is fine - let's just not act like one side is "right" while the other's "wrong" for the exact same behaviour.

TMNT 1990 = 45%
TMNT 2 1991 = 36%
TMNT 3 1993 = 27%
TMNT 2007 = 34%
TMNT 2014 = 50% <- as it stands now.

Eh, are these even top critics? Most of the NY publications have a really snotty attitude about CBM in general, and I'm curious about Travers and Scott.
But in the end, I still prefer JeremyJahns and Black Angry Nerd more, they tend to "get" movies that I "get".

A 50% split among the professional critics is probably what I'd have guessed. The movie's tone is pretty similar to the 1990 live action movie, and that's a film critics either enjoyed or really hated, but that was embraced by TMNT fans, especially the younger audience.
If I'd been 14 when I'd seen this one, I would have loved it, although I'm sure most critics will be comparing this to the other superhero movies we've gotten in the past few years. The Marvel Studios films have raised the bar so high on those that any action movie's going to have a hard time stacking up to them, and superhero movies are now are held to a much higher standard than they were just a few years back. For what it's worth, this is way better than Daredevil, Catwoman, Elektra, Green Lantern, Man of Steel, and probably a dozen other superhero movies from the past decade that I could list, but it falls short of movies like The Winter Soldier (and probably Guardians of the Galaxy, although I haven't seen it yet).
If you go into it with an open mind and expectations of basically seeing an updated version of the 1990 live action movie, you'll probably come out of the theater feeling you got your money's worth. Some of my friends went to the screening last week expecting to really hate the movie, and they came out cheering louder than anybody. If you go in with no expectations like I did, or if you can get yourself into that same mindset you had when you first saw a live action TMNT movie, you'll probably have a fun time.

First batch of reviews coming out are mixed
http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/nailbiter111/news/?a=105159
HIT FIX: "Kids will have a good time."
"The greatest thing this film brings to the table is a kinetic fighting style that makes the Turtles seem like they are actual physical threats to the bad guys. There are three big action scenes where the film kicks into a higher degree of fun that, taken together, add up to just enough of a thrill for me to recommend the film. There's one in particular that is inventive and impressive, and if the whole movie had been able to demonstrate that same level of energy, then I might be more enthusiastic about it." - Drew McWeeny: Hit Fix
SLASH FILM: "Disposable Action That Lacks Character and Emotion"
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles succeeds in providing beautiful effects and passable action populated with characters we all know and love. But the plot around them is riddled with holes, there’s not a round character in the entire film, and the result is like watching a fireworks display. It’s an okay way to pass an hour or so, but you’ll forget about it minutes later." - Germain Lussier: SlashFilm
IGN: "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles isn’t great, nor is it a disaster."
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles isn’t great, nor is it a disaster. There have been better stories made about these characters, including the 1990 feature film, but there also have been plenty of weaker ones. Despite the strange revamp of the Turtles into huge, superpowered behemoths who seem ready to throw down with Colossus or the Thing, the film does a nice job of capturing their brotherly in-fighting, camaraderie and rapport. Much of the movie is just sort of “there” though, except for that notably entertaining snow-based action sequence – which stands out for also having fun taking the Turtles out of their usual city terrain." - Eric Goldman: IGN
VARIETY: "Any deeper viewer connection to these Turtles remains firmly at bay."
"Through it all, it's hard to avoid the sense that Bay, Liebesman and company are hitting all the iconic beats of the franchise, but not investing them with the sort of cleverness, gravitas or feeling that would allow this movie (and presumably, the two sequels in store) to coast along on something other than fan loyalty. Part of that is due to the appearance of the Turtles themselves: For all the undeniable sophistication of ILM's motion-capture system -- which required the actors to wear skin-hugging body suits and helmets equipped with tiny high-def cameras -- the push toward a more photorealist design has led to strangely off-putting and unapproachable results. They may look more hulking, more grotesque and certainly more like the products of advanced genetic mutation, but they also lack a certain engaging, intangible quality that Jim Henson's rubbery-looking '90s creations, though of an inferior technological grade, had in abundance. You might as well call it soul, and without it, any deeper viewer connection to these Turtles remains firmly at bay." - Justin Chang: Variety
HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: "Fox spends much of the movie acting bewildered as April"
"Liebesman relies on his genre-film resume to keep events moving at a brisk clip and the motion-capture process employed to facilitate live-action integration with cutting-edge VFX looks superior onscreen, sharply and smoothly rendering some thrilling action scenes and delivering impactful 3D character detail. However, the drawn-out two-hour runtime and the nonstop cartoonish violence may deter some would-be fans, or perhaps the adults who pay for their movie tickets." - Justin Lowe: Hollywood Reporter

Im looking forward to this movie, and from the little I've seen so far (tv spots, etc.) Im all but expecting to love it.
Thing is, as you said, the bar has been set high with films like the Winter Soldier, but I certainly dont think its wrong for fans to expect a movie of that caliber. Given the swing in comic book-based films (in terms of quality) over the past several years, its been proven possible that CBMs can work in a major way.
Funnily enough, the 1st Cap America film is widely panned by critics as just okay, but nearly strong enough, and the 2nd film was just amazing. Perhaps this film will follow suit. Turtles-1, getting their feet wet. Turtles-2, dive in head first, and prove its really worth caring about these guys.

This is a pretty fair response. I feel like I expect and "need" more than this movie is, and a lot of the changes/choices made really rub me the wrong way. But I know that not everybody is going to share my expectations. I feel like a lot of people are going to love and hate this movie for the exact same reasons. And I'm starting to wonder if you even can make a TMNT movie that won't be divisive to a sizeable part of the fanbase.

The castmembers portraying Splinter and the turtles achieve a persuasive level of realism that was never possible with the elaborate puppetry required for the original film series and adequately fulfill expectations for their characters.

It seems like My thoughts are a little to irresistible for you to miss out on Bry, Im not that interesting dude.. but how many times are you going to self-righteously and arrogantly tell someone that they " aren't worth it " and that you've put them on your holy ignore list until you actually do?
You 2 are always dismissing peoples opinions (your favorite word) when they don't line up with your own. Listen to screamo music? dismissed. Have something positive to say on Twitter? Dismissed. If you're Eastman or Liebesman and wanted to take liberties with this reboot that Bry doesn't agree with? You should admit you were wrong. Dismissed. Went to an advanced screening? Dismissed. An entire group of people that listen to a certain type of music or anyone that goes to an advance screening is pushed aside by you.. but one guy named Bob on Twitter starts trashing TMNT and you love it
Yeah, exactly. I saw a bunch of those early "reviews", and they were basically Warped Tour dudes saying "that was SICK/that was DOPE" over and over. And if they enjoyed it, good for them, really. But that says absolutely nothing about whether the movie's actually any good, and I honestly think I don't have much in common with their tastes or expectations anyway.
You should really try practicing what you preach and take care not to fall of that high horse you ride. Like I said before. I actually stand by this, because my point was that none of these impressions really explain why this movie's good or not. The same would apply to "that SUCKED" with nothing else offered by way of justification or explanation. All that does it say if someone happened to like something or not. They're not reviews. That's what I was trying to say.
But I really don't think it's a problem to acknowledge that others will have different tastes and expectations. I don't think that's "elitist" necessarily. I can come on strong with my opinions, but I usually make a point to say I don't expect everyone to agree. It's not "right vs. wrong", it's just... different.
But I'll leave it there. On topic and civil! :D

None of the dick jokes in GotG were "haha, dicks" though. They had to do mostly with such irreverent language being used in a deadly serious situation. The fart joke was just a fart. Barely even qualified as a joke. I don't think it's a double standard to hate one and not the other.

But it had the same exact plot as Age of Extinction and both plots were very messy imo. TMNT and GOTG are equally as ludicrous to me.. But I totally agree with you 100%. The plot can have wholes and be extremely generic when it has the Marvel tag on it. If it has a Bay tag.. forget it. Double standards are very obvious. No way around it. Shell tightening.. offensive.. Black light semen joke? No problem.
I can't help but notice an apparent double standard here with review for TMNT vs Gaurdians of the Galaxy. I haven't seen TMNT yet so what I say should be taken in stride. But with GotG it's got such a high RT score with critics embracing its ludicracy and cheesy humor. But of course with the TMNT its too ridiculous to take seriously. Sure there's a fart joke in TMNT and that's stupid, but there were numerous dick jokes in GotG and no one bats an eye.
I think a part of that might be whether or not there's anything "more" to it than that. Two movies can have similar jokes and content, but one might tap into some "deeper" meaning or emotion than the other and feel like a fuller story. Or might handle that material in a different, more compelling/interesting way. At least in the opinion of the reviewer, at least.

Official runtime of the movie is listed at 101 minutes. It's a tight, fast movie.
That's a little less than what I would like, but as long this movie does the franchise and fans justice and remain true to core elements I'm fine w that. Plus we're definitely getting a sequel and hopefully a trilogy out of this, they would be dumb not to. The release is getting so close! I can feel my shell tightening!

Here's a quote from it.
The way people have been talking about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you'd think Michael Bay directed it. After seeing it, you may wish he had. I did.

not to start nothing but thats actually not a positive review, the guy pretty much said it was crap and the only way its acceptable would be if bay himself directed it

I wonder if this has anything to do with them having to cut certain scenes with Fichtner to accommodate him no longer playing Shredder.

Well as a fan it doesn't feel like it's doing me or the franchise justice but hey I'm just one guy. Given the numbers it's predicted to make I'd say a sequel talk is a li'l optimistic.
In fact I'm not sure I'd want one unless they did a Hulk/Incredible Hulk were it's visually and tonaly different and be a case that as "well it can be a taken as a sequel or it could be taken as a reboot, it's up to you".
