View Full Version : Anyone ever made a TMNT character in a class..

..and actually got your classmates to like it because I did last semester.

I did a three-peat in my Ceramics class (I took it three times) so I had to audit then and whenever I decide to take that class again.

But it didn't stop me from from making a HUGE clay Krang. How huge you may ask? A little over 8 inches in height but 2 feet and 27 inches across. *He's sprawling out.* Biggest challenge I had (besides keeping his right tentacle 'arm' intact) was painting him and some of our ceramic paints don't always stay on a piece well -without creating that paint runoff effect- after it has been fired..which was what halfway happened to my Krang...until I painted him over with acrylic paints. He is on my profile picture if anyone is interested in seeing him.

And I'm also new here, so hi and how are you doing?

Oh hey..two new additions to an old thread haha. Just in case anyone is interested in seeing pictures of my ceramic Krang, they're in here.

And here is non-Krang related ceramic stuff that I've also done in the same class.

My mother is a retired grade school art teacher. Just before her retirement, there were students of hers who incorporated the Turtles into their art projects.

Neat. Did she like their projects?

Reason I'm asking is because some teachers want their students to do original work; my former Ceramics teacher didn't care what we made as long as our work wasn't offensive or didn't blow up any of our kilins.

I wrote a literary analysis on TMNT for a college class. Got a B+ as I recall...thought the Prof. thought I should have picked a more important graphic novel as my subject.

Some professors are like that. I tend to get lucky and pick classes where most teachers are usually mellow.

But at least you stuck to your interests enough to write an literary analysis TMNT themed to get a B+ for it.

She didn't indicate she was impressed one way or the other by them. Not really different from using, say, Snoopy or other copyrighted characters.

Considering how the TMNT have become a household name, and stayed that way, and since the original Mirage TMNT series was meant for an older audience rather than for tykes, I thought that judgment ridiculous.

When I went to DeVry Institute of Technology to learn being an electronic technician, I had to do a demonstration speech...and my topic was on how to change a light bulb in a lamp. I am not making this up. :D It was technically on topic, and I got an "A" grade for it.

I made a few drawings of the Turtles for art class back in 6th grade or so.

Did you post any of those pictures here?

I'm still struggling a bit learning how to redraw the chars now after a nearly twenty year hiatus due to drawing other characters. But I'm getting there.

No, I've never posted any drawings of mine on here.

I'm a terrible drawer but I can draw the turtles more or less.

A lady I used to know told me about how when her son was in kindergarten, he'd draw Ninja Turtles (and Power Rangers) a lot. She said the teacher told her that it could be a sign that he could turn out to be a violent kid. She thought it was a load of bull.

I did make an homage painting to the issue 1 cover of the Italian artists the turtles are named after.

In 6th grade we were given picture books with blank pages, the idea was to make each page a letter of the alphabet with an illustration based on that letter, & a paragraph about what you chose. Like, for S I chose "Samurai", wrote a passage about their era, & then drew Sewer Samurai Leonardo. So I used Playmates TMNT characters & toy variants for the entire thing. I don't seem to have it anymore, but it was awesome. Got a great grade on it, too. :trazz:

I might make more chars from the series; I have lots of leftover clay from last semester.
That or make whatever else comes to mind.

I remember signing my friends' yearbooks by putting my name and then drawing a Ninja Turtle head next to it. :tcool:

I remember having a Turtles backpack, notebooks and pencils with TMNT graphics and even the school books were wrapped with a protective layer which had TMNT motives printed on it.

Seems like every teacher back in elementary had modeling clay or playdough, so I'd always be sculpting TMNT stuff based on all the toys. I had the textures down, so all I needed was to mix the right colors which everyone seemed to label in braille anyway. They're probably all long gone, but I remember doing Krang, Muckman and Joe Eyeball, etc. I usually stuck with the villains, but I did Leo and Raph at some point. We'd have art projects every year, and rather than draw, they'd let me sculpt. I can remember when Power Rangers first came out and being called Finster by some girl who did a killer Rita impersonation.

My first attempt at playing with clay was *I think* in middle school. I made a cat, painted it a magenta purple-ish color and had it for a few years. My second attempt was in high school and that didn't attempt didn't go so well. *We had only three days to work with the medium.* Most fun I had was in college where I made well over 20 ceramic pieces, 6 of them are clay replicas of video game characters and that clay Krang I mentioned in this thread.

Yes, I have done a TMNT character in class. I'm doing a 2k3 Michelangelo grid drawing right now. And I've done his nunchuck on my art book.

Oh yeah, and my folder has a three-fingered hand with a pencil and ripped note paper with Mirage Donatello on it.

Everyday before Kindergarten started I would draw a Ninja Turtle on scrap paper. I really wish I kept some of the drawings. :ohwell:

Back then everyone in class was a Turtle fan already.

I used to doodle a lot in my notebooks during high school. It ranged from Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, and a bunch of other random stuff. I used to loathe notebook check because I felt as if I was being judged on my doodles too. Heh.

Heck yeah, seems like it. I can remember this artist showing up to talk to our Kindergarten class and he asked us what we'd like him to draw. I raised my hand and go,"Oo! Draw the Ninja Turtles!" Then the whole class goes nuts. The guy just starts laughing and says something like,"This happens at like every school I visit." I seem to remember him drawing two of the turtles. Wanna say Mikey and Don. I haven't talked to my teachers back in Hooks TX in ages, but I bet my Kindergarten teacher still has those drawings somewhere. She actually liked TMNT from what I remember. She never thought the show was violent and all that crap.

From what I remember, my class was more into TMNT than our teachers were. So it's cool that your teachers were big kids at heart and kudos go to your guest artist.

When I was in primary school, we were specifically forbidden to draw Ninja Turtles for art projects. I think the teachers had had enough of Turtle-mania at that point. In high school, I drew them all over my folders and stuff, but never got an opportunity to do a project on the Turtles.

Too bad your teachers were a bit harsh against you guys drawing the Turtles.

The Turtle Mania was so-so in my elementary school years and I drew a few characters from the show. The TMNT craze eventually phased out in my middle school years. I did something of a 'boomerang effect' if you will; I moved on with my life and came back to the OT interest again thanks to Youtube. ^_^

By the way, I like your avatar.

I still draw TMNT and other things in my notebook and I'm in college.

I never pay attention in class, I just get to much inspiration to draw when I'm bored :D

This thread is funny for the simple fact that I do more projects now than I ever did in school. And I went to art school! That's what art school does to you. Makes you hate art so much, that after you're done, you want to become an accountant......but then eventually stray back to art after you forget about all the beatings you got by teachers. Then you use that motivation towards your new found profession of vigilante assassin to pick off each and every one of em!

Or you just become a better art teacher that doesn't verbally destroy a student's inner confidence in their own artistic abilities and instead encourage a student to enjoy what they like.. and then help them to see their interests in a different way. I might not have ever enjoy creating the things, digital images, or projects if my teachers made me hate art by any means.

Don't go to art school because they pretty much do exactly the opposite of everything you said! Hahaha

Yeah, I'm in a community college and most of the professors are usually nicer to their students.

Smart move bro. You'll save money that way and probably get a better education! Haha. Private schools are a joke....

Thanks. I made that Krang to top my Christmas tree a few years ago. I should take some better photos and post it in the fanart or custom merch thread.
