View Full Version : If Disney Buys TMNT from Viacom?

What would happen? Would it be the worst or the best thing to happen to the franchise? I like to believe it would be the latter. Heck it be my dream come true if that happened. Okay maybe no that far but still a great thing. People say it would ruin the franchise but how so? Honestly to me the only people who would get ma of this purchase is the so called "hardcore" fans o TMNT. What do you think?

I would like a TMNT in the fashion of KickAss. If Disney got it, I don't see that ever, ever happening, and they tend to be a company, that once they get the rights to something, say it doesn't do well, then instead of selling it off, they just lock it up into their vault.
I'm just tired of the TMNT being groomed for just the very young audience, I wish we got someone to appeal to a more broader audience.
But sometimes, Disney does surprise.

As much as I would LOVE to see this, I have high doubts any company would ever consider limiting the TMNT audience when it's been such a big draw for kids. Maybe we could get a few straight to DVD specials like Warner have done with things like Batman Year One and TDK Returns.

Me too. TMNT used to have Mirage, now it's been kiddified to excess. I hate it when stuff for grownups gets allocated as being 'for kids,' and never removed from that ghetto (for fear of the soccer moms.) What's going to be left for the adults and older teens anymore? :x
And as for Disney buying TMNT? Let's hope that never happens.
As much as I would LOVE to see this, I have high doubts any company would ever consider limiting the TMNT audience when it's been such a big draw for kids. Maybe we could get a few straight to DVD specials like Warner have done with things like Batman Year One and TDK Returns. That's the crux of the problem right there. America practically worships it's kids, and holds them on a pedestal to the exclusion of other people. TMNT should not be an exclusive kiddy franchise, especially as it didn't start out as being meant for kids. People are so afraid of taking something back from the soccer mom brigade that it's like once a franchise gets dubbed for kiddies, it stays like that forever because no-one wants to rock the boat.
Not everything should be for kids. Making kids seem like these special little angels who should always be catered to above everyone else just breeds entitlement in the parent (and often, the child.) Restaurants have started banning little kids because of this entitled mentality in parents, and it's about time other companies did too. And these restaurants didn't lose business, it actually got better!

I wouldn't trust Disney with TMNT
Disney will ruin it and probably have a show for under 5 year olds.
For the last 20 years The Gargoyles fandom have been fighting tooth and nail with Disney to bring back Gargoyles. The cartoon ended in 96, we fought to get Gargoyles back and we did in 2006 with the comics (we also got the Bad Guys spin off comic) but it only lasted 12 issues because Disney wanted more money from SLG to renew the licence. We are still trying to fight with Disney to bring Gargoyles back. We would love a movie but it's not happening. Disney are a bunch of brain dead people who only care about money and ignore fans
I hate to see it happen to the TMNT fandom.

As I suggested in another thread...
They will bring Venus back, and they will make her a princess. Do we really want that. I mean no insult to Venus or her fans, but look... the princess crap being applied, in whatever way Disney could figure out, is inevitable.
I would far greater rather that Nick use it's ties with Universal to do awesome TMNT stuff at THAT park instead. (Including of course recreation of the lairs.)
Disney will ruin it and probably have a show for under 5 year olds.
On that note/speaking of, I think Nick also understands that there is an adult fanbase, even if not addressed too much. I'm not sure Disney would ever understand at all.

you can blame the 80's cartoon for the whole Pizza obsessed and stupid thing. At least the 2003/Nick cartoons tried to bring some darkness back to them.
Nickelodeon's coffin will be nailed shut as we get "Brand-Spankin' New TMNT!".

They didn't turn Gamora into a Princess. Watch GOTG first before jumping to conclusions.
Even if they did do a kids line, so what? I think they're beginning to realize the adult market is now where the money is. Kids aren't buying Toys like the used to, but the 30 year olds are. That's the new demo.

What exactly is the precedent for this mindset? Black Widow isn't a Disney princess. Neither is Pepper Potts or any other Marvel leading lady.
But sure, keep pretending Disney only makes media for five year olds.

The Marvel films are still great, it's not been Disney-fied. Disney might own it but that's it.
Kinda like when they did Roger Rabbit under Touchstone's name, but the content hasn't been kiddified, it's mature/adult oriented as hell.
So I'm not worried. If Disney wants it and Viacom hands it over? Take it.

Tell me about Gargoyles. I can't get into specifics, but let me just say I knew people who knew people who had some serious money (they are billionaires) and were fans of that cartoon, and had the money and connections to make a live action Gargoyles. This would have looked sick, and they were already drafting stuff with Weta, but in the end, Disney refused to even see the people to work out negotiations. They didn't even want to talk about it. Their plan was just to share distribution profits, the unspecified company itself would have covered all production costs, but again, Disney ceos didn't even want to meet. This is one of the reasons why I am apprehensive of Disney buying out TMNT. All of this took place around 2004, and the company's main headquarters was in Miami, Florida.

I was in good part being sarcastic, people. (The part that wasn't however doesn't doubt that they'd latch onto that character somehow in some bastardized way on purpose to market to girls.) But society has a hard time not labeling the Turtles as "for kids," and I don't see Disney being able to see beyond that too well. I honestly do NOT care who owns them - ownership for companies this large is simply a matter of acquiring properties that keep them relevant and make them the most money.
They own Marvel, and now Star Wars, and have proven, they can stay out of the way, and allow them to flourish.
If they owned the Turtles, it would just mean greater exposure through Disney's 'avenues' (theme parks, etc.)
The only reason I would be against it is for the simple fact that Disney owns so many properties, I would hate for the Turtles to not get the attention it deserves, so 'shelved' in other words.

I only said that because we're all assuming that Disney can make a great TMNT movie based on their track record with Marvel films. So going by that logic it's safe to assume that their TV counterpart wouldn't be as good because the current Marvel cartoons on Disney are pretty bad.

It might not be cancelled immediately but it definitely won't be renewed for another season. Just look at what happened to Spectacular Spider-man and Wolverine and the X-Men, both of them were great shows but they were still cancelled for whatever reason. The current Marvel cartoons on Disney are not really that good.

The Nick show would be Canceled..unless Disney and Nick came to some sort of agreement ala Marvel Islands of adventure
I think when people hear Disney they think princesses castles and Faries...but as someone said this isnt the Disney of the 90s....they are smart...Disney knows what and where to put their name
dont get me wrong i a Disnerd, but they also wouldnt let a competitor air a show to a franchise they owned without some sorta of back pay
if Disney bought TMNT it would most likely be through Marvel..and call it a day
now both WB and Disney have their flaws..Wb's track record of Hero movies isn't really well received outside nocturnal flying Mammal man and the whole watchman fiasco
Disney until recently really didnt know how to handle a Kids action show..before the whole Marvel buy out they handled power ranger very poorly
but they learned, look at movies Like Wreck it Ralph and Pirates and see where they learned how to make an Action for all ages to enjoy with the Disney name..then look how they allowed Marvel to flourish on its own
EDIT: all and all i am not against it..and it wouldnt be the first time the Disney and the turtles where together

Agreed, not to mention Disney brought Star Wars back to Marvel instead of letting Dark Horse keep the license.
And the Nick show would definitely be canceled, Nick would never continue producing a show if they had to share profits with Disney. I also doubt Disney would even want to work with Nick. They'd axed it and make their own series.

Anyway, I don't see how bad it could be if Disney suddenly bought TMNT from Viacom. Not that I care about Marvel or Star Wars to know much about either but, as far as I know, it's not like Spider-Man and Darth Vader are hanging out at Mickey's house. Besides Disney are insanely rich, so obviously we'd get even more Turtle stuff. I just have mixed feelings over this. The pros to it, they could really be hands off, and bring in film makers that are actually knowledgeable with the franchise and make a great movie/cartoon series (The new Star Wars movie and CG toons look impressive from the teasers) Or they could botch it up and just lock the franchise away into their vaults never to be seen again (I worry about monopolies when they buy out stuff, they aren't buying out stuff to get their customers, they buy out stuff to get rid of competition)
But, all in all, Disney tends to be hands off. In fact, they tend to be too much hands off. It's why The Lone Ranger's production budget ballooned out of control.

If Disney got the rights to TMNT I would feel like crying....but I shouldn't pass any judgment. I cringed when I heard they got a hold of Marvel and the Star Wars franchise...but also joked about Luke having a song and dance number about the "Force".
That aside, I just wouldn't want this to happen....we'll get Archie April looks-wise (which I hated because she looked like a lost Disney princess)...unless they do go back to a "Gargoyles" style of storytelling and stuff. If they ever got the rights and did a series like that, I'd be on board for it....just as long as we don't get a "Leo Chronicles" or <insert character> Chronicles story arc (for me the Goliath Chronicles were boring ^^). lol
Well that's why i love the 2K3 cartoon (besides the fact i grew up with it) i haaate what Nick did to Mikey.I hate what they did with Mikey too, but seems he's getting better as the show goes on. Somewhere on the board it was mentioned that Mikey for the Nick series was purposely being portrayed in the way that he is so that his maturity can be shown growing. Season 2 Mikey I don't mind so much. I wonder if the upcoming eps of the series if he'll really....mature and stuff having to go into survivor mode as he will be trapped in Dimension X and will obviously have to fight or kill as he's wearing a dead Kraang on his head
Also, I like the fact that for the Nick series, the turtles like pizza (only Mikey is the pizza-crack addict), but show that they do eat, and like, things besides pizza. OT series it was pizza everything.

While I do like the idea of Disney acquiring TMNT and doing a Gargoyles style series, but would they be able to do that justice these days? It worked great with Gargoyles back in the day. But would censors and stuff allow it now? Plus there's the fact that they'll lock the series up in their vault if it doesn't do well, which has already been mentioned here several times. :P

Doesn't Disney also own ESPN and ABC? I haven't seen any Disneyified versions of John Gruden or Chris Berman walking around. I think Disney buying the turtles would be great. Disney releases things because they understand when something is a cash cow. They know what makes something a success and they don't meddle with it. If they want to make a kiddie show as well who cares? They make money twice.
They bought Star Wars and look what happened, there is another movie coming! Lucas did those crappy prequel movies and then let the series sit dormant for years only releasing kiddie cartoons and glorified fan fiction. In fact with Disney owning Star Wars we might finally get the original un-molested versions of the original trilogy on blu ray.
They are not messing with the winning formula of Marvel either. The movies that come out are still pretty awesome. In fact Disney owning TMNT would probably lead to the release of the 2k3 series on home video maybe even on blu ray. When they bought the Jim Henson company they went out of their way to release stuff that fans never thought would come out. They are still releasing things that were obscure television specials on blu ray too!
I think someone mentioned their mistreatment of the Gargoyles as an example why the Turtles would fail at Disney. No one remembers the Gargoyles unless they grew up watching them. They aren't as big as TMNT. Why would Disney waste money on it for the several thousand fan boys that liked it as a children?

If Disney does ever buy the rights. I hope we get a Mirage-style film.

The Marvel films are still great, it's not been Disney-fied
You keep telling yourself that son. For my money GOTG was the most Disney-esque the cinematic universe has ever been.

And yet it was more violent, had more bad language and more imitable behaviour than any other Disney-Marvel movie.
Awe, no love for the 2007 movie? They showed Raph and Leo eating cereal, and even showed how each one at their cereal differently!:P
Yes that's true. A deleted scene also showed Mikey collecting slices of birthday cake for Splinter from all the kids parties he was entertaining for. :)

If Disney bought TMNT? Well I assume Marvel would take control of the franchise in that case seeing how it is more in their ball park than something like Mickey Mouse.
I don't think that TMNT in the MU would really work though.

Because people are stupid enough to believe Nick will sell TMNT because of a movie being poorly received by critics. Ignoring the millions they made on the show, comics and toys.

Don't mind that, just think of this thread as an exercise in hypothetical thinking.
Of course poor reception won't matter, as long as it's a financial success Viacom will stick to the franchise.
