View Full Version : ‘Ninja Turtles’ May Shell-Shock ‘Guardians’ at Box Office (The Wrap Article)

Interesting article...TMNT is leading Fandango for presale tickets. This could be a great thing for those who want this to succeed. I'm hoping for a Trilogy out of this.

http://www.thewrap.com/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-may-shell-shock-guardians-of-galaxy-at-box-office/

Marvel's space romp has posted summer's best Monday and Tuesday grosses and both films could top $45 million for weekend

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” is a slight favorite to knock Disney and Marvel's breakout space adventure “Guardians of the Galaxy” out of the top spot at the box office this weekend, in what could be one of summer's closest popcorn smackdowns.

The kiddie crowd will lift Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo and Michelangelo narrowly past Quill, Drax, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon of “Guardians,” say the analysts, with both films likely to top $45 million for the weekend. That would be more good news for the struggling summer box office, which reversed a seven-week slump last weekend, but it's still running about 18 percent behind last year.

There are three other wide openers: the found-footage tornado thriller “In the Storm,” the Helen Mirren foodie drama “The Hundred-Foot Journey” and dance romp “Step Up All In.” None of those are expected to threaten the leaders, however.

Word of mouth could play a major factor in determining who winds up on top, and that's the best argument for “Guardians.”

Great reviews and strong word of mouth propelled it to an August-record $94 million debut last weekend, about $20 million above pre-release projections. Most of this summer's No. 1 films have taken second-week drops in the 60 percent range, with the exception of the “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” which the critics loved. The reviews for “Guardians” have been just as strong, so a second-week drop like the 50 percent that “Apes” fell seems likely, which would put it at $47 million.

“Guardians” has been very impressive since its big opening weekend, posting the summer's biggest hauls for a Monday ($11.7 million) and Tuesday ($11.9 million).

Paramount's Michael Bay-produced “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” is reboot of the film franchise that launched in 1990, when the wise-cracking reptilians were at their peak in popularity. Sequels in 1991 and 1993 didn't come close to the $135 million domestic and $66 million from overseas that the original “Turtles” did, so this represents a gamble for Paramount.

The $130 million production budget ups the ante, and makes a strong overseas showing critical if “TMNT” is to turn a profit for Paramount, Bay's Platinum Dunes and Nickelodeon Movies.

The popular kids TV show on Nickelodeon has helped the Turtles stay relevant with the young set, and the toy sales remain significant. There has been a dearth of family movies this summer, and the degree to which the PG-13-rated “Ninja Turtles” connects with kids will have a lot to do with its fortunes. The fact that “Guardians” skewed somewhat older — more than half its first-weekend audience was over 25 — could help there, too.

“Ninja Turtles” is tracking for an opening between $45 million and $50 million, and a late blitz of TV advertising could push it higher.

It was leading “Guardians” in advance sales at Fandango on Wednesday, and pacing ahead “G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra,” which opened to $54 million in 2009. It's also surging on social media, with more than double the Facebook likes of “The LEGO Movie” and is just behind it on Twitter.

There are not a lot of reviews yet, but the ones that are posted haven't been kind. If crowds at the Thursday night previews and on Friday are similarly underwhelmed, it could cut into the “Turtles” take. Lukewarm word of mouth might not matter to kiddies, but could make a difference with adults.

“Speaking as someone who grew up on the Turtles, I get the feeling there is a lot of curiosity among 20-somethings,” said BoxOffice.com assistant editor Shawn Robbins. “Whether it's go-to-the-theater curious or wait-for-Redbox curious we'll see, and word of mouth could affect that on Saturday and Sunday.” A scenario in which “Turtles” wins Friday and “Guardians” pulls ahead over the weekend wouldn't be shocking.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” will be in more than 3,700 locations, including about 350 Premium Large Format locations. “Guardians” will retain all of the IMAX theaters that delivered an August-record $11.7 million, or roughly 12 percent of the grosses, in its first weekend.

I actually have a bet with a coworker of mine; if the Turtles knock Guardians from the no.1 spot this weekend, he owes me a copy of the movie when it comes out on bluray, if Guardians remains no.1, 2 weekends in a row, then vice versa.

Honestly, I think I have the advantage bc Guardians has been out a whole week, so everyone who was just dying to see it probably already has, and all that leaves is the crowd curious to see if Turtles lived up to its namesake, which probably includes a portion of those who already went to see Guardians.

Any way you slice it, I think I'm getting a free bluray. Unless of course, neither Guardians nor Turtles earn the no.1 spot, losing to something completely unexpected like Step Up '37'...if that happens, all hope is lost for the world. :D

As a fan that doesn't care at all for this movie I've long thought it would be financially successful anyway. Now that doesn't seem all that possible internationaly it doesn't matter to me if it tops the box office in the US, in fact there's something kinda sad about the idea that for tne first time a TMNT movie might fall short in that regard.

It would be a real accomplishment, because Guardians has word of mouth now, and it could put up another enormous weekend.

And I did a search before posting, so either you're mistaken, the seach feature doesn't work, or they posted the link after I started this thread.

I think it will, As much as I love Guardians of the Galaxy, Its still a new franchise, When you have another that's been around for 30 years, TMNT has the advantage because, you got a Fanbase that spans a few generations.

You got the ones to grew up in the 80s reading the comics and watching the animated series, Ones who grew up watching the movies, Played the Video Games, Those who watched the 2003 series and seen the 2007 CGI film, Those who read the IDW Comics, And seen the Nick series.

So I think TMNT will succeed because, you have People who grew up with the Turtles, Who are now Parents with there own Children, so they will take them to see the movie this weekend.

Someone explain how it's an accomplishment for a movie in its first week that is based on a 30 year old property with an established fanbase, current tv series and current toyline to narrowly beat out a movie in its second week that is based on a property few people heard of until the movie.

If it happens.

If you think TMNT has the advantage over a film in the Marvel Universe right now, you might be in for some disappointment.

The franchise has been around for thirty years, but theatrically the franchise is not a juggernaut by any means.

The most popular Marvel characters are still relatively unknown if you want to make that argument.

Point is, it's still a part of this Marvel Universe which has been incredibly popular, and the characters are now fairly well known in that respect.

How are Iron Man or Captain America relatively unknown compared to anyone in GOTG? They've been in 3-4 movies each now. The general movie-going public know who they are. It's not like this is a sequel where the public has already been introduced to these characters.

stop reaching....

How am I reaching? What have I said that isn't true?

People are acting like this would be a big accomplishment if TMNT were to beat GOTG at the box office this weekend. If this was also GOTG's opening weekend then it would be a huge deal.

Just look at the last two Marvel (non MCU) movies released this summer. Spider-Man 2 and X-Men:DOFP both opened to over $90 million (like GOTG) its opening weekend and were then beaten it's second weekend by Neighbors and Maleficent, respectively.

Sure, but the GotG were the D-Squad. Cap and Iron Man both had a whole bunch of cartoon shows and toys and video games and merchandise produced long before the movies existed. The GotG characters are really seeing the mainstream for the first time ever in any significant way.

If you're familiar with the Marvel Comics, they are probably B-C-Squad at this point in time. That point is valid.

The big draw here is the film is directly tied into the Marvel Universe, sharing the same storyline as other popular films as recent as this year.

I'd say they've ballooned in popularity in the comics since the movie was announced. There are currently three GotG comics running, which is a first. That wouldn't be the case without the movie drumming up interest, though.

Sure, that's a part of it. A big one. But the movie was still a much bigger risk than anything in the series yet, and especially for an August release. Great marketing, positive word of mouth and the quality of the film played a huge role.

Great marketing, positive word of mouth and the quality of the film played a huge role.Even on top of the connected universe draw, everyone knows a Marvel movie is gonna be good. They've got a spotless track record. So people may say, "Wow, this movie looks ridiculous," but the next thought that follows is not "It's probably bad." They get a free pass, even though it's scifi, and the characters are so out there.

Marvel does have the "pixar-effect". I thought GoTG looked dumb, I only went to see it because of word of mouth, and it's Marvel. And partly because it was James Gunn, but sometimes when Indie directors go mainstream it's a colossal failure.

This IS an upset if TMNT beats a Marvel movie in it's second week, because GoTG made so much money based off nearly zero tv ads, and it being an unknown series for Marvel, the word of mouth is crazy now for this movie, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it make over $50 million again. If the Turtles make more than GoTG it's a huge. You could guarantee a sequel is coming. I think as long as it makes over $35 million this weekend, a sequel is coming.

I'm going at 7pm west coast time, I'm interested to see if it's packed or not. When I saw GoTG on a Saturday afternoon, it was packed.

I think the Thor movies are fine. It's just that it's mythological stuff trying very hard not to be weird. It's a different genre, dressed up as superhero movies. Not every superhero movie fan is gonna like that stuff. I don't care for the movies at all, myself. But they aren't poorly made.

My mistake. It's still bad writing. You don't go into a sequel saying, "And way back before, there was this mighty powerful thing that we never set up. Just accept it, we're moving forward." And it's also cheap to say this all-powerful thing always existed, so that you don't even have to think of an origin for it. It's akin to the Transformers continuously finding ancient powerful things in and around Earth. The new TMNT backstory may be farfetched, but at least there is causality.

Definitely. I have great memories of a group of college friends getting together and watching TMNT 2007 in theaters and reliving it during a Turtles DVD night. It was great. Now we are spread all over and are doing the married/career thing, but I can tell they are excited about the movie, too. That's what makes it so awesome- yes, each movie has flaws, and there are things I wanted from each movie that sometimes I got and sometimes I really didn't get, and I'm sure this one is no different, but it's still going to be a great experience.

The reviews really don't make a difference in terms of that experience. Reviews, especially with social media, tend to be annoyingly trendy, and at least half the time, I have a completely different experience than the general review vibe seems to be sending. I don't feel defensive to the fact that this movie is probably not as solid as GOTG, but I doubt, as a genuine fan of all things TMNT, that I am going to be as offended as I should be with a so called "18% fresh" movie.

i just got home from seeing the movie...

I thought about making this a post mocking everyone claiming this movie was bad before even seeing it, but I'll just give a straight OPINION of the movie, not a review.

I loved this movie from the opening credits until the end credits. I do not need to hear Hamato Yoshi or Oroku Saki for this to be a TMNT movie. The Turtles were fantastic, funny, you are not constantly reminded they're CGI. This movie moves FAST. Unlike the 90's movie which takes place over a week or two, this takes place over a few days, with the chunk of it taking place in one day. There are of course classic villain explaining his scheme moments, and other cheesy moments, but they do NOT ruin this movie.

I was very angry when they cast Megan Fox as April. My opinion of her, is that she's the worst actress in main stream movies. In this movie, she did not miss a beat, and she was very good. She brought a new kind of April, and I have to say I enjoyed her take. Will Arnett was funny, his character actually serves a purpose, he's not just a disposable camera man.

Shredder...Shredder was AWESOME. He had plenty of dialogue, he was not given the opportunities the first movie Shredder had to establish how bad he can be, but he was a BAD MAN. I know it could be nothing, but I can't help but feel they certainly have an opening to explore Shredder and Splinter in a sequel. Their showdown was incredible and I felt immediate tension between them. The way certain things were said, they could inject the back story so many want to hear or see in further movies.

The turtles' personalities are perfect, their look in the actual movie is very good looking, the trailers and posters don't do them justice. Mikey was hilarious. Knoxville did really well as Leo, but sometimes I noticed it was Knoxville, others he blended in. The guy who played Raph was GREAT. Raph is my least favorite turtle, but this guy who played him, aside from Sean Astin, might be the best Raph.

I didn't think the plot was poorly written at all. It does move quick, but they logically move the story along. I know for sure now, the people complaining, or the reviewers who bash this, have agendas. My theater was roaring with laughter and everyone walking out was raving about it. Grown men acting like little kids talking about their favorite parts. The first movie is very special to me, and this movie is right up there. I'll answer any questions if anyone has any.

It'll be interesting to see how this goes. I don't really think it would be an accomplishment if TMNT knocks GotG from first place. Now, if it can beat GotG's opening weekend numbers, then I'll be impressed. But it's not exactly a victory for a well-known brand that has existed for over two decades to outperform a film about unknown characters that's in its second weekend. Marvel brand or no. Honestly, I've been more amazed that GotG is performing as well as it has. As much as I loved the movie, I was really worried it was going to be too weird for people and wind up a total flop.

Well Guardians did manage to take a no-name franchise, and take them to super-stardom by putting out a funny, exciting, thoughtful movie, that winked at the audience and respected them deeply but...Audiences just love their soulless entertainment as much as the quality pictures.

No doubts that TMNT will take this weekend, especially with second-week releases having their Thursdays not counted.

After TF4 I've given up on the idea that quality will dictate ticket sales.

saw TF4 as well, and I still think GOTG was better than that, there was only a few movies that came out this year that I thought "blew me away" and sadly TMNT wasn't one of them

The only films that I thought "blew me away" this summer was Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Xmen: Days of Future Past and HTTYD2. Everything else this summer sucked for me.

I prefer Loki than Thor anyway. :P

Loki, Widow, Fury, Coulson and his team are the only consistently interesting things about the MCU period.

I had no desire to see Guardians, but because of James Gunn, and knowing it will eventually tie in to the Avengers, I went and saw it. Also, I put myself through 2 Thor movies, and this didn't look as bad. Anyway, I loved GoTG. It's in my opinion, the best Marvel movie to date. It is better than TMNT, but I love TMNT and I still really know nothing about GoTG. So I'm rooting for TMNT to make a ton of money, and hope they will listen to complaints about the movie, make a sequel, that gives us more time, and develops the characters a little more. As much as I don't like Secret of the Ooze, it's like ALL turtles in that movie and barely anyone else, and that's how it should be.

My top 10 for the year so far is:

10. TMNT
9. Neighbors
8. Enemy
7. Edge of Tomorrow
6. Wish I Was Here
5. 22 Jump Street
4. X-Men: Days of Future Past
3. Captain America: Winter Soldier
2. GoTG
1. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

I just went to see the matinee for Planet of the Apes with my roommates and there were a lot more people there than normal, especial considering that school just started back up. My roommates figured that the place was packed because of Guardians but when I asked the cashier she said they were seeing Ninja Turtles and that the tickets were sold out until 6. So 4 or 5 showings had no tickets left. Things are looking hopeful and I'm going to see it again tomorrow!

Great thread dude!! This film was definitely underestimated. And nothing taste better that TMNT taking number one.. knocking GOTG off of it's high horse

I also enjoyed GOTG and I agree it was the best Marvel film I've seen so far. But of course I enjoyed TMNT more. This year TMNT GOTG and POTA were my favorite films. Cant wait for next years blockbusters.

It's nice to see TMNT on top after all these years. Cant wait for that announcement!!
TMNT 2 anyone?

i just got home from seeing the movie...

I agree with every word. I also hope they pace themselves a little more in the sequel. I like Liebesman as a director.. but I kind of want Bay or maybe even Ratner to take over maybe. I kind of got the feeling that Liebesman barley pulled this off. But none the less accomplished what he set out to accomplish. After seeing this movie I am already excited about what TMNT 2 will be like.

And for those of you " TMNT fans " here claiming it is not an " accomplishment " for TMNT to take a number 1 spot in the Box Office... get over it. Your precious Marvel film has taken a back seat to TMNT. It had it's time last week. It's getting it's sequel. This is a TMNT forum.. TMNT is number one. It is something to be happy about.

You act as if TMNT beat Gaurdians to the top instead of knocking it off in it's second week. Bare in mind that if the movie had been out a week earlier it wouldn't have beat GOTG.

Doesn't matter. It still beat GOTG nonetheless!

Just like when TMNT (2007) beat 300.

The problem with that logic is... people still talk about "300", sometimes.

Other than, "Hey, remember they did that?", nobody really talks about TMNT 2007. It just kinda came, made some noise for a few minutes, then got promptly swept into the dustbin of history. Not entirely fairly, mind you, but that's what happened.

So, yeah, Big Picture. I'm a "Big Picture" kinda guy.

The potentially amazing turn of events was never that TMNT might defeat GotG's second week. The amazing thing was that GotG was doing so well that it actually had a shot at beating TMNT in its second week. Fortunately for TMNT, it did better than its tracking predicted, and so we got a completely un-amazing outcome.

I don't get it why fans of TMNT want this film to be disaster at box office. Yes, the film isn't good but if it fails at box office. Do you understand how many years we will not see TMNT at big screen again?

That's fine. The world already has too many bad movies, we don't need more just to re-establish a faded but still semi-relevant brand name.

We've had MORE than our fair share of good-to-great TMNT stuff over the years, and a relatively small amount of bad stuff. If keeping the "brand" alive means diluting the quality of it, then by all means, let it die off before it becomes a (further) parody of itself.

As I've said before, I'm a huge He-Man fan, but I've come to grips with it being a dead franchise. I genuinely don't care if it ever comes back, because if it did, it might be terrible, and I'm perfectly fine going back to what's already been done with it, because almost all of it was good. I wouldn't want them to bring it back just for the hell of it, especially if it was going to be done poorly. I can always watch the old cartoons, etc.

I'll never understand how anyone could love anything so much, that they would gladly swallow more "product" at the expense of any quality. "It's (Brand X), you HAVE to like it!" has never made any sense to me at all, and it's really dangerous thinking.

You'd think people's pride was on the line with the way people try undermine the money it's making or pump it up as a triumph.

What really gets me is people who were 'done' with the movie after the first trailer STILL talking about it and the money it will or won't make.

Uh how do you know that? I'm going to use an argument that's been tossed around here...GotG isn't a known name, so if it went up against TMNT last week, how do you know TMNT wouldn't have made $60 million? That's right, you don't know. GotG was up against Lucy and Hercules which flopped. If it was up against TMNT it might have lost due to the high volume of ads by Paramount, and the general name recognition of TMNT.

This.....and lets not forget that people said it couldnt make the money its making strictly due to it coming out in august. Some people, not all, just cant accept that they were wrong about turtles losing to gaurdians and now that it hasnt you gotta go back and and call out gaurdians first week numbers not realizing gaurdians had no competition. But really that makes it all the better, so let me break it down for ya......bad critic reviews, horrible word of mouth, low rt and metta scores, up against a marvel/disney movie, and comimg out during back to school season ultimatly makes tmnt the bigger success this weekend seeing how it beat ALL odds. and here we are with the actual numbers and facts right in front of us and we still cant accept it for what it is. :trolleye: so I will go ahead and state it for what it is regardless of what people will claim.....gotg had no real competition and when it did it was drowned out, and if you take these two and put them head to head turtles would have still come out on top, even tho it would have been a really close race. Say what you will but the facts are there so quit justifying your presious marvel meltdown and accept it for what it is:lol:

edit: oh yea, and one more important thing to note....gaurdianns opened up in over 1000 more theaters than tmnt and yes this does make a slight difference

GotG made $30m more in its opening weekend than TMNT's and did rather good numbers this weekend despite the (surprisingly strong) competition. Why do you assume it would have "lost" that fight if they came out on the same week? More likely Guardians would have won by a similar percentage, but they both would have opened lower than they did with the direct competition cannibalizing each others' audiences.

I'm going to be completely honest here. You guys can choose not to believe me, and if so, whatever, **** you. But anyway, my only interest in this box office race was to see if GotG could really do that well. As someone who just looked into GotG to research this weird new movie Marvel was making, and then suddenly found himself becoming a massive fan as I started reading the comics, I've been terrified that GotG would fail at the box office. Does anyone remember League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, aka LXG? Yeah, I was picturing that, except this time with a property I actually cared about. I've even been buying up GotG merch like mad, spending $120 just to assemble that Groot figure. Why? Because part of my brain was telling me this property was going to bomb, either from being terrible or for being so weird audiences would reject it. And if that happens? There goes the last time you'll ever seen Rocket Raccoon on a lunch box. Anyway, I've been incredibly pleased to see that GotG was not only a fantastic movie, but was well received by both critics and audiences. The idea that this weird little property could not only be a success, but even beat TMNT's opening weekend was something I never even thought possible until the tracking numbers started leaning that way. It's just been incredibly relieving to see my worries that GotG will fade into obscurity melt away. But let's be honest, TMNT beating GotG's second week is as amazing as one race track runner's first lap in a foot race being faster than another runner's third lap. Heck, I'd even say it's not fully fair to compare totals from each film's opening weekend, because TMNT has GotG stealing ticket sales while GotG had no such competition. (Though it's a hell of a lot more fair than comparing GotG's second week to TMNT's opening.) To me, this was never about seeing how poorly TMNT would do, but whether GotG could actually do that well. Yeah sure, I'm not a fan of this new movie and I would have loved to see it bomb and the sequels get cancelled, but I never expected that to happen so I can't say I'm all that upset that it's doing well. I'm just incredibly pleased to see that GotG outdoing TMNT is even up for discussion, even if it's not actually going to happen.

I don't assume, I'm saying you cannot say TMNT would have lost in a straight up opening weekend battle. We don't know how it would have performed last week. You can't just say oh well GotG made $90 million therefore TMNT would have lost. For instance, last week, I went to see GotG because 1. I was bored, and 2. I had no other options really. But if you are given the option of TMNT vs GotG, I think a lot of people would have picked TMNT.

The fact that it knocked GotG from the top spot this weekend was a pretty impressive feat to me after the quite negative reaction to the turtle designs and early promotional stuff coupled with the VERY strong reactions and word of mouth from GotG's opening weekend.

Wish I could be excited that we are getting a TMNT sequel... it pains me that I can't love this film the same way I love all the stuff coming out of DC and Marvel these days. I even strongly liked Man of Steel so, I don't think I'm difficult to please.

Maybe the sequel will be an improvement... but even if it is they can't fix the way they FUBARed so many things in the first film which are inevitably going to be carrying over.
